What a talented young musician.. If my kids could play an instrument to that technical level and show such an understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm etc, I'd be very proud of them for having invested their time and energy into one of the creative arts. I don't get why anyone would want to knock this guy at all for being a musician who's smart enough to earn a living from it. IMO, as musicians, need to celebrate what we all do to make the world a better place.11 points

Gloworm Festival at Thoresby Hall in Notts, depping for Johnny and the Raindrops, who do original songs for kids. https://youtube.com/channel/UCfudHoUzRaZd-A7CzlzRzRA We had kids up on stage playing cardboard guitars and dressed up as carrots and peas and all sorts. Fantastic gig.8 points

Recently completed build by myself at Bass Monkey comprising of - Alder P bass body finished in Fender Gold nitro paint with laquer/paint checking visible. Lakland USA 1/4 sawn neck with Jazz width nut, rosewood neck and maple dots. It plays absolutely beautifully and has hardly been used. Hipshot tuners. CTS Pots and Lindy Fralin P pick ups. Badass II Bridge Fender Scratchplate. Comes with Fender Tweed Hard Case. Weight 3.6kg The bass is currently strung with TI Flats and plays and performs flawlessly. I’m a sucker for Fralin pick ups and they go almost exclusively in all my builds, they’re just spot on. Price includes U.K. delivery and no trades thanks.6 points

Last night was great fun! Played at Wilsons in Aberdeen to a great crowd who were really into the gig. Highlight of the evening was this old guy who was sitting at a table near us. He seemed to be digging the songs and was singing along to some of them. Then we played Enter Sandman. Well! This guy goes to a carrier bag and gets out a Guitar Hero "guitar" controller and proceeds to mime playing it in front of us. He had all the moves - playing it above his head and all sorts! The crowd thought this was amazing and it made for a memorable moment for sure. Such was the energy in the room that I threw a lot more shapes when playing than I normally do to the point where the other guys in the band were wondering if I had been substituted for someone else. I did a daft bit during Highway to Hell - because there's no bass for a long time at the start (and also the second verse), I just got a chair out and sat down, looked at the audience, shrugged a few times. It nearly went wrong though because when I stood up, my strap came off its button at the bottom. Somehow managed to get through the first chorus by pushing the bass against my thigh until I could sit down in verse 2 and sort it out. Was more careful when I stood up the second time! What a laugh all in all. We played really well and had a bloody good time as well. Got asked to play an encore. Had lots of people come up after we were done and say nice things to/about us. Landlord asked about our availability for next year (we're going back to Wilsons next month too). Can't really ask for more than that. Compact and bijou6 points

Played at Dunoon yesterday afternoon, at the Doon The Watter festival...great day, but hotter than the sun on stage... Some slight technical issues with the sound on stage, monitors died halfway through the set, but it didn't affect out front... Back home all tomato-faced after a day hunting down shade! 🙈🤣😎 VID-20220813-WA0021.mp46 points

Hi all So how often do you see a triple pickup bass for sale? Up for sale is my Godin Shifter 4 bass, made in Canada, and quite different to the PJ pickup Classic series which came after. I bought it for making it into a project bass but don't have the time. Here are some reviews of it: https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/godin-shifter-4-501652 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwTRXBh6Si4 This bass has vol/tone knobs and a 5 way pick up selector, and is wired so the switch does: Neck pickup only Neck + Middle pickups Middle pickup only Middle + Bridge pickups Bridge pickup only The original sixth option of push-pull on the tone knob to isolate the next pick up has been removed, but this current set up seems to work well. Peering into the cavity, it has been copper shielded and someone has installed a Freeway 12-way switch in there (https://www.freewayswitch.com/products/), though flicking it over to the second bank doesn't seem to result in all the options one might expect. However the first bank of options seems to work normally, as documented above. It's a fun bass with a lot of tonal options, the neck is really comfortable and fast (Jazz width nut, 1.5") and the neck has been smoothed/lightly sanded in the past. Another set of white pick ups and scratch plate included along with the black set it is equipped with. The white pickups appear to be humbuckers as opposed to single coils. But it definitely has single coils equipped currently; this is how these basses originally shipped. I make the weight to be 9.75 lbs. Canadian Laurentian basswood body, rock maple neck and maple fingerboard. Finish has some wear and swirling and scratches on the back on it, but it looks good overall. £450 shipped in the UK, happy to give quotes for shipping elsewhere too. Pete4 points

Today I have mostly been recording reggae music on a cassette 4-track, heavily influenced by Jackie Mittoo, Augustus Pablo and King Tubby. Hi-fi studio folks best look away now...3 points

I’m probably behind the curve on this one, but why are the basses named after Lionel Ritchie? And if they are, why isn’t the retail price £15? (Cockney rhyming slang - a Lionel is £15. Lionel Ritchie was in The Commodores, they had a hit with “Three Times A Lady”, a ‘Lady’ refers to Lady Godiva - a fiver, £5.00 - so a Lionel is 3x a ‘Lady’) Yes, I may have been at the French equivalent of Special Brew, but still. I’ve wondered about this for a while now. I apologize in advance...3 points

A lovely Ernie Ball Musicman 5 string bass in a beautiful transparent teal colour. According to the serial number it was built on Valentine’s Day 1995 and presumably put together with love as it is a beautifully made instrument with a great neck and tons of tone from the ceramic pickup. It has a three band EQ with the three position switch similar to my Sterling. The neck is shallow and string spacing 17.5mms, very low action and the trussrod functions as it ought to. Little fret wear as it has only been played very occasionally since new and no dings other than minor scuffing marks from play. It has a very tight and big sounding low B but is well balanced throughout its range. It comes with a none original case. The bass is a pretty good weight for a Stingray 5 at a tad under 10lbs. The strap buttons were changed before I owned it to schaller ones. There are no strap locks included unless I can find some in my parts box. I used to play 5 strings years ago but my fretting hand tendon issues mean that this instrument is being neglected. I am not looking for trades and I’d prefer pickup in person as it’s a valuable instrument but would box and post within the UK only at buyer’s cost.3 points

Well, despite 'stuff', I managed this ... Here is my contribution to the August 2022 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by one of the previous winners: Upside Downer. Well, she said 'Platform 2, eight o'clock.' It's now... Let me see... Hmm... Half-past midnight. Maybe she's not coming..? I'll give it another hour or so... Can't get much more minimalist that this, this month. A few minutes of me, loosening up on the drums. It's an e-kit (Millenium MPS850...). Recorded 'live' (that much will be obvious; no re-dubs or editing at all...), directly from the module into a USB stick, and transferred to Reaper, so the sounds are those of the e-kit itself. No treatment, other than my standard Reaper NY Glue compression on the Master tracks, as usual. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.3 points

I used to play with a guitarist who was on a search for the Holy Grail Strat sound. After an exhaustive search he was in a music shop for the umpteenth time trying all the Strats out when the owner asked if he wanted the name or the sound. He said he wanted the sound at which point he was handed a 1980s Tokai Strat. He bought it 30 minutes later. That story served me well when I fancied a Precision and I've been the owner of a lovely 1980s HardPuncher for probably 8 years now. Lovely, lovely thing.3 points

Played another Wirebirds gig in Witney last night. Same venue as four weeks ago, went well but our lights proved to be inadequate - we were playing in total darkness by the end! Good fun though, paid OK and several free beers (decent stuff, it's an independent bar with links to a local small brewery). My wife drove there and back, so no dodgy driving! Going to look at stage lights on line today!3 points

3/5 of the main band out tonight at The Old Ship Inn, Pointon. No lead guitarist, Kev The Keys filling in on drums. Erm… he’s better than the drummer! Absolutely nailed it all night. didn’t speed up during every guitar solo… No audience again. But we played really, really well. Stupidly tight - we’ve played together for 20+ years mind but even so: Kev’s never drummed in this band and we only managed a quick rehearsal earlier this week. I got to do the harmonies all on my own all night. Loved it. Got a great sound from PA and back line. Plucking fingers are a MESS and sore despite superglue. Developed a new blister on ring finger due to using it in lieu of middle finger. Few weeks off now for them to heal and harden…3 points

It was very very hot. We played a festival slot between 7-9pm and after experiencing some feedback issues for the first two songs (the singer's/guitarist's monitor AGAIN) we went down really well and had to politely turn down the requests for an encore as everything was running late. A nice evening. My goodness it was hot though 🥵3 points

Genuinely agree... while I'm sure it's technically tricky to play, there no real melody or hook or anything actually interesting to listen to. Jaco has always been a bit overrated in my eyes.3 points

Hello all, As mentioned in my introduction, a few days ago I finished making my 8th build, but this is the first bass guitar. As requested, I will post the build thread rather than just showing the finished Bass. Hopefully you will enjoy the build. I have been wanting to add a bass to my collection of guitars for a some time, so I did a bit of research and decided on doing a short scale (30") Jazz Bass. The first part of the build was some experimentation with the fretboard - Going with a dual wood, Panga Panga with oak and using some leftover dust from sanding a Ziricote fretboard as a dark fill line. Started on the fretboard by making an oak fretboard to the same thickness as the Panga Panga offcuts I had from a previous build, then cut a piece of the Panga Panga to shape, followed the cut on the oak and then glued it in place (didn't think beforehand how much of a ball-ache this would be). once it was dry I then marked out for the next piece following the same shape. Cut and glued in place (again cursing myself for such a stupid idea, clamping two 9mm boards together like this is a pain!!) I made sure to keep straight edges along both sections to allow for marking out the fret cuts. Marked out the frets and cut the slots. Next up was the neck. Went with a Through neck using mahogany and poplar (The wood is from an old piano we had, which I dismantled when doing our front room) Cut to length and thickness, then glued. After it had dried, I planed it flat on both sides, glued on some extra mahogany for the headstock width and then got on with cutting the headstock angle at 9 degrees. Then glued the offcut on to the reverse side to give the headstock enough thickness along the length. Then roughly marked out the string and machine head locations so that I could get a rough headstock shape cut. (waited until I had the machine heads to do the locations properly) And last thing was testing how it would look with a Mockingbird body (hadn't decided on body shape at this point, but this was to hand from doing the last guitar build). Still needed to work out what wood to use for the body, would depend on what I had in my stock.2 points

I'm relatively new to this forum, or at least being active on here. I joined recently to sell some gear and 48 hours from listing 2 basses I had sold them. Just a note to say that this is a great forum full of like minded and generally sound people and I will be trying to get into the stuff that goes on a little more over the coming months. it's a great place to do business and with such great people. Just to be transparent, I work for Yamaha, my role being to sell Yamaha, Ampeg and Line 6 products. Any help I can offer in that area, then I will do my best, I might even be able to run a few prototypes past you for some opinions here and there. Obviously this is not an official connection, it's my personal account and not endorsed by my employer, due to legal compliance there's only so far I can go with matters, but i will do my best. Thanks Basschat, impressed.2 points

2012 Pedulla Rapture JJ in Tobacco Sunburst. The best jazz bass i've ever played, super light and the neck is really comfortable. I imported this from Canada in 2016 however it just sits in its case not getting the love it deserves. It's in overall great condition, recently setup with DR Sunbeams with 2 very minor blemishes (see photos). Not sure I want to let this go to be honest but it really should be played more. Collection from Nottingham preferred, although I'm willing to meet half way. Unfortunately I'm not willing to ship outside the UK. No trades2 points

Fender MM Nate Mendel Precision Bass & Bag This 2018 bass is in excellent condition and comes with all the original case candy and Foo Fighters spare neck plate. It’s a lovely sounding bass and has subtle wear to it that gives it the look of a genuine early seventies instrument. It is currently strung with Daddarios but a set of old heavy gauge strings are included too. It has the Fender hi-mass bridge. It weighs just over 4kgs and is a nicely balanced instrument. I’d prefer pickup in person but can post in the UK at buyer’s cost if necessary. This is part of my ‘if it’s going to be gathering dust - sell it!’ gear cull. Sorry no trades.2 points

Looking to trade or sell my mint/new Rickenbacker 4003AC for either a 4003W or a 4003SW + some cash. Could also be interested in a 2 bass trade (with one being one of the aforementioned basses) and some cash from my end. The bass is like new, I've only had it out of the case 3-4 times, and played it for less than an hour. Absolutely no scratches, dings or nicks. Perfect condition. Same with the OHSC. Also includes all the case candy. Only 420 of these were ever made, and it is a revolutionary bass, as it was the first to implement the v2 rickenbacker bridge, and double "treble" pickups. Sounds like an absolute monster. I'm only selling it because I'm not too keen on the green, and I don't feel justified playing a 4000€ instrument with my current skills.. I'm also too afraid I'll scratch it if I ever use it for a gig. Anyway, here's some pics: I can provide more on request. Can be safely shipped worldwide, as I am an experienced packer. Will also have tracking and insurance.2 points

Lovely looking bass you have there @funkle I recently bought a Godin Shifter Classic 5 string bass and I am absolutely amazed at how good it is - build quality, finish, sound and playability. If yours is anything like that - and I know it will be - then someone's going to get a bargain here! GLWTS 😊2 points

Not last night, but last week, I just hadn't got round to saying about it! Last week was another double gig week. Did an hour at Festival on the Hill in Honiton, quite a large well done stage, with stalls, games and camping etc - it was very hot (luckily not like this week though) There was a PA outage during one song where they had to reboot their rig aparently but not much of an issue. Seemed a bit remote and although was good to do, I think it is hard for the singer to be away from the people that much! Also with the heat, a few songs sort of lacked a bit of life. The Spector sounded ok on stage though with the BC cab and the ABM600. Then a drive from there, where the drummer almost totalled himself by failing to notice a crossroads, luckily empty, to a local working mens club for a normal 2.5-3 hour set. I picked up the PA and was frankly knackered by the time I got there. I was wandering around in a bit of a daze wondering what to connect and do next. It was the first time we were using the Evox 8, so we had an unbalanced PA, but didn't really have time to sort it out. By the time we were done it was 5 to 9, almost ready to go so we went out the front, sounded good but too loud, turned it down a bit and off we went., For the first 3 or 4 songs (admittadly bluesy old ones) I was feeling like falling asleep but once the more upbeat songs started I got into it, but it was hot. about 8 songs in I realised that my amp was quite a way down and as I had used the PA at a practice, the bass was mostly going through the PA, which is not something I do. Turned it down a bit but didn't seem so good so put it back up. After the half way I got a new lease of life and finished at about ¼ to 12.2 points

Very interesting as a few Les Paul players I know bought Tokai Love Rocks as backups to their Gibsons then moved on the Gibsons keeping the Tokais as their main, and then buying an Epiphone as their backup.2 points

Whenever I think of bad bass solos, I always come back to this… I think it’s the confidence in the singer’s call of “Bass Solo!” that truly elevates this piece. The call of Bass Solo! became a bit of a thing in the community I was a part of back then, around 1999/2000. The Bass Solo! starts around 38 seconds in: Sorry, I tried several ways to post the link without posting the actual video, but could’nt work out how to do it. Hopefully the mention of lady bits doesn’t offend (though it’s not vulgar or slang, so hopefully it’s ok).2 points

Pretty pleased with my latest ramps, made for an Aria Integra and a Yamaha TRB1005. I’ve always fitted ramps to my fivers, I just find them more comfortable to play. Black plastic, 8mm for the Yamaha, it took some work sanding off a couple of mil. The Aria has a matched piece of Ash, took a while to match the colour of the stain, but we got there or thereabouts. What do you reckon?2 points
