  1. After 11 years our jazz standards quartet played our final gig (number 150) last night at a brewery where we have played many times. Not a full house but very appreciative and we played well but we were all very aware of the end of our little band. As usual our Bose PA worked perfectly, I go directly into it and we don't need monitors. The singer/keyboard player is moving to another city and since we have developed a band image and personality over the years we won't try to replace her and carry on, we will have to start from zero and maybe take another direction. The three of us are in a seven piece jazz band and that will be our main musical outlet while we decide what to do, I may look around for another band that needs a DB player maybe jazz or folk or bluegrass or ???. It's been a good run and we are all still friends, quite an accomplishment after 11 years. At 76 with about 60 years of gigging I'm hoping something comes along soon, the clock is ticking but I'm hoping to carry on for as long as possible.😊

  2. Played at a party yesterday, depping with some old friends. It was in the garden of a cottage in a small village in Holderness, and is an annual event where everyone knows each other and really enjoy themelves . A lovely do with great punters and ace food and drink too! Used my bitsa Jazz bass, with a GKMB800 into my old 'Loud Inc' 4x10 cab, which still sounds as strong as ever. Glad I didn't sell it on when I got my BF Compact, as occasionally it's great to have a change. The band play 'Dad rock' stuff which always goes down well with the gigs they get. The drummer is John 'Cambo' Cambridge, who played in David Bowie's early band 'The Hype' and then on the 'Space Oddity' era stuff. John actually introduced Bowie to Mick Ronson following playing with Mick in top local band 'The Rats'. He's a top bloke, great company and a wonderful drummer so it's always a pleasure (and an honour) to get to play with him, even though I've known him for over 40 years. ( John has recently written a book about his early days with Bowie and Ronson - for anyone interested it's called 'Bowie, Cambo and all the Hype' , is available in paperback and a fascinating read.)

  3. Played a 45 minute slot at Orwell Quay, Ipswich, as part of the Summertime Ipswich festival. Well run event, great stage and sound. We played well, went down well, picked up a few new followers. Smiled all the way home Note to self - I've had the Squier JV Precision longer than any other bass, after kissing so many frogs for so long before or since getting it - it is The Prince. Why do I still look?

  4. My first gig with my old band for 2 1/2 years, as the singer had serious health issues over the lockdown. Luckily she has made a full recovery. It went really well, I had a great time and we've got plenty more booked in the diary.

  5. This small hand router isn't used that often, but when it is it's a godsend. Perfect for this job! So this is decently thick to resist warping that you sometimes get with thin covers, especially when the finish is applied: But it's nicely curved and flush Next job is the neck pocket. Oh - and a helpful 1/8oz sanded away...2lbs 6oz with hatch

  7. Thanks for the reply. Could you hold it for me for an hour or so? It's going to be donated to S'manth (See this thread here) to replace stuff lost in a fire, but I'm just waiting to hear back from her. Cheers.

  8. Depped last night for a 5 piece (bass drums git sax and vocals). Since doing Bandeoke my approach to dep work has changed. I'm no longer bothered at having to read chord charts or improvise a whole set as I'm used to three hours of not knowing what we'll be asked to play, often with musicians who haven't met before and not knowing if anyone actually knows the song. So depping where all the people on stage know each other and know the set is a doddle. Last night was at a social club with a nice stage, friendly staff, typical social club crowd. The band had a reasonable sax player, an ok drummer and a singer with an incredibly good voice. Oh and a guitarist. I got paid, enjoyed playing and was tucked up in bed at 20 past 1 with a cuppa. Result!

  9. Just picked up a USA sterling, been after one for a lot of years, just never got round to it, couldn’t resist this one to go with my 2 band stingray. Like it just as it is but a set up to suit me will only improve it more. Ernie ball do make some great basses 😄

  11. With a heavy heart, I'm selling my most prized possession (and dream amp), my Ampeg SVT-CL. Don't think much explaining needs doing for this powerhouse. I just unfortunately don't use it enough, and rather it goes into the hands of someone who will use much more than I do. Comes with a cute little soft-case. Collection from Pontefract, West Yorkshire. Don't really trust myself to ship this one, but happy to travel for fuel. Cheers!

  12. For the hatch, I have the shape of the body recess but not yet the finished depth...but there are a few things that need doing first: - The hatch will start off quite thick - it will be eventually carved to the same shape as the back. - But the recess will also be deepened so that the bottom of the hatch just clears the pots and EQ And I find it a lot easier just to make the hatch first and do it by actual measurement than calculate it off measurements and hope for the best! Well, that's my excuse, anyway. There is a very helpful piece of offcut that is just the right size that will be used. I cut that to around 7mm as the initial thickness. First is to make a paper template of the outside edge using the highly sophisticated 'paper and fingernail' technique: Using the cut out template, I cut the blank a mm or so oversize and then work my way round, gently sanding the excess away in a long series of try, mark, sand, re-try, repeat, repeat, repeat. I usually do this with a sanding block as it is less prone to overdoing it and ending up with a gap, but for this I need square sides and so am using my little disk sander on 'dead slow': After half an hour or so, I have a hatch that is square-sided and close fitting to the shallow recess: What I will do now is, using a measuring rod through the EQ pot drill hole (the EQ pot is the deepest component), chisel the body recess deeper until the hatch has around a 2mm clearance from where the EQ circuit board end will be, once fitted. After that, with the whole hatch then sitting deeper than present... : ...I will plane and sand the hatch flush, with the curve matching the back profile. Weight sitting at 2lbs 6 1/8oz inclusive of oversize hatch Once that is done, I will shorten and shape the neck pocket and make a start on the final slimming / shaping.

  14. that was a manic weekend , interspersed with health issues and transport complications due to rail and tube strikes ! The guts of this was laid down before the weekend but the lyrics, such as they are ..... were added with the weekends experiences in mind! The drums were punched in using EZ drummer and used a couple of presets , bass and guitars using Waves gtr3 FX and a splatter of Waves Manny M Reverb to tie it up . All rolled in the glitter offered from Ozone 8 . Ed to add ........ Hark, I hear someone at the door already, I do hope he has a cheque book and pen !

  19. Social club. Punters only woke up half way through, then here was some discreet jigging going on. Our PR left my pic off the band promo poster AGAIN. Best bit was truly cracking my tone for the first time in 11 yars. Very very satisfying. And the key ingredient? Markbass 104 cab. Along with LM3 head, Bareknuckle pup on a fretless P bass clone, flats, and my signature EQ settings, which aren't intuitive. FYI: Bass 11.30; low mid 10.30; high mid 9.30; treble 8.30. VPF on 9.00.

  23. Hi all So how often do you see a triple pickup bass for sale? Up for sale is my Godin Shifter 4 bass, made in Canada, and quite different to the PJ pickup Classic series which came after. I bought it for making it into a project bass but don't have the time. Here are some reviews of it: https://www.musicradar.com/reviews/guitars/godin-shifter-4-501652 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwTRXBh6Si4 This bass has vol/tone knobs and a 5 way pick up selector, and is wired so the switch does: Neck pickup only Neck + Middle pickups Middle pickup only Middle + Bridge pickups Bridge pickup only The original sixth option of push-pull on the tone knob to isolate the next pick up has been removed, but this current set up seems to work well. Peering into the cavity, it has been copper shielded and someone has installed a Freeway 12-way switch in there (https://www.freewayswitch.com/products/), though flicking it over to the second bank doesn't seem to result in all the options one might expect. However the first bank of options seems to work normally, as documented above. It's a fun bass with a lot of tonal options, the neck is really comfortable and fast (Jazz width nut, 1.5") and the neck has been smoothed/lightly sanded in the past. Another set of white pick ups and scratch plate included along with the black set it is equipped with. The white pickups appear to be humbuckers as opposed to single coils. But it definitely has single coils equipped currently; this is how these basses originally shipped. I make the weight to be 9.75 lbs. Canadian Laurentian basswood body, rock maple neck and maple fingerboard. Finish has some wear and swirling and scratches on the back on it, but it looks good overall. £450 shipped in the UK, happy to give quotes for shipping elsewhere too. Pete

  24. Sire V3 Gen 2 with reworked pickups and rolled over fingerboard edges. Sire preamp with active/passive switch. Low action, light weight, no issues. Very little use as kept as back up to other Sire. Now £200 Edit: I have weighed the bass and it comes out at 7lbs 15oz. This feels right to me as it is feather light and way under my other basses. I have had enquires about postage and I am happy to box up the bass for courier but buyer will need to arrange their own service and level of cover.

  27. Fender Mustang Bass made in 1972 in an original and well used condition, with plenty of bumps, bruises, dings, paint checking and discolouration. The blue finish has turned to a petrol green colour but the original colour can be seen under the bridge, neck pocket and pickguard. A previous owner had used glue under the pickguard to try and prevent warping and shrinkage (not the first time I have heard of this being done!) but thankfully most of the original paint remains, albeit somewhat messy. There are two areas where the top layer of the pickguard has split around two screws but it is still secure and does not go through the other 2 plys. The ink stamps date the bass to 1972 and the pots to 6th week, also 1972. The frets are in good shape, the fingerboard has some very nice grain and the truss rod turns freely in both directions. The tuners work well but have some tarnishing as expected, likewise the bridge which still has the facility to add foam mutes if required. The tug bar has a split and only one screw but is the original reddish coloured version. I have always liked the red shadow these leave on light coloured pickguards! It has a new set of La Bella MUS flatwounds which really do suit the bass and ensure a decent low end thump! The bass weighs in at a mere 3.25kgs or 7 and a bit pounds. Sadly I have discovered that short scale basses are just not for me and will stick to long scale but no doubt in a few years when I am even more decrepit, I’ll regret letting this go! To ensure any prospective buyer is happy, I would much prefer this to be a collection only. I would also much prefer a straight sale but would be willing to consider a lower priced Precision or Jazz as a part exchange. Please feel free to ask for any further information!

  28. Played this afternoon at a pub in Crawley. Outside, full beer garden, second set went down particularly well presumably because the audience had drunk more beer by them. We had a dep drummer who did well and because my Status is away at the mothership being tended to by Rob and Dawn I played my Flea Jazz - not bad at all. Funniest moment was when we were packing down and a very drunk young lad asked why we didn’t play any Status Quo but we did play some Oasis. Vocalist replied we didn’t play any Oasis, yes you did, no we didn’t. Young lad then said yes you did, Another Brick in the Wall - that will forever now be an Oasis song in our band 😂

  30. I'm relatively new to this forum, or at least being active on here. I joined recently to sell some gear and 48 hours from listing 2 basses I had sold them. Just a note to say that this is a great forum full of like minded and generally sound people and I will be trying to get into the stuff that goes on a little more over the coming months. it's a great place to do business and with such great people. Just to be transparent, I work for Yamaha, my role being to sell Yamaha, Ampeg and Line 6 products. Any help I can offer in that area, then I will do my best, I might even be able to run a few prototypes past you for some opinions here and there. Obviously this is not an official connection, it's my personal account and not endorsed by my employer, due to legal compliance there's only so far I can go with matters, but i will do my best. Thanks Basschat, impressed.

  31. Is this tone appraisal whilst actually playing or have you heard recordings played back and find it lacking? I just find it hard to imagine you need more bass. For me and what I am aiming for - blues rock 3 piece - guitar bass drums - I set my eq for a slight bass cut, slight low mid boost, slight high mid cut, treble flat. Weeny bit of drive that fattens the sound, plus a smidgeon of compression. Then vary the tone knob depending upon the song. But maybe the tone I aim for is different to the one you are? I don't know - all so very subjective.

  34. I enjoyed the video and many of the things you brought up are correct, in terms of them being a myth. The 'P bass uber alles' thing gives me a dose of the ***ts, along with the 'Leo is God' thing. I own a ton of basses, and not one of them is a P, and I have never, ever been denied a job because I didn't have one or use one.

  35. The GK is readily fixable by an authorized technician. First step is accomplishable by any and all bassists: Insert a 1/4" lead between the fx send and fx return sockets. If I had a dollar for every time this sorts a 'dead' GK that still lights up I would have enough for an overseas holiday bar tab.

  36. Bad luck, it is horrible when that happens. Before you rush off and start spending it is worth spending an hour or two checking what actually went wrong. It could be something simple you'll spot if you work through logically and without all the pressure. I don't think you checked your speaker lead for example and I'm not clear if you tried just going straight from bass to amp. Speakons often have screw terminals that work loose over time so there are a lot of very simple things it could be. If it is indeed the amp then it could be repairable. I can't say I stay rational and organised in these situations even though I know a cool head can fix most things You'll want to take a backup at least until you are confident about your amp. I have a Warwick Gnome which sits in my bass case and I also carry a DI box to gigs. Sansamp, Zoom B1four, there are loads of options.

  37. Vintage guitars will, in my opinion continue to be sought after. Of course, there are players who insist that this or that 1965 whatever sounds and and plays better than a new one, but people simply like to own stuff that others don't or can't. You can buy a waterproof watch for £19.99 that keeps infinitely better time than any Rolex yet, if folks have the money, they will happily pay £10,000 for a 30 year old tatty GMT and risk having their arm chopped off for it on a Saturday night in town. The reason my reply has quoted this one is down to the referenced example of a 73 Strat which I found interesting as there was a time when only pre CBS was the main interest. The 70s period instruments were considered bad quality crap however, now all the pre CBS stuff is safely locked away with investment bankers or in Joe Bonamassa's bedroom, stuff like 70s Strats have become the new vintage purely, because that's what's left to buy. At some point, it'll be 80s Strats no doubt.

  38. For anyone wondering about the quality of Godin- I bought a used Godin Freeway 16 years ago, and it has been my only gigging bass for most of those years, and has just become so again. If the neck profile is the same (and it sounds like it could be), then it will feel absolutely lovely! Any time I pick up another bass, I wish it was my Godin.

  40. We've done a couple of birthday bashes, one a 70th in a local village hall, and the other an 80th in a trying-slightly-too-hard "gin bar". Both were well-attended, but the former was definitely the more successful of the two - most of the folks there were actually interested in what we were doing, and a small amount of dancing even broke out during the second set (admittedly initiated by Mr Rhythm Guitar's wife and friends, but hey-ho... ). The other was our worst gig ever (so far!), so we'll draw a veil over that one! Funnily enough, we've got another 70th bash coming up in December, which we were asked to do on the strength of the first, and is being held in the same village hall, so it'll be interesting to see how we (and the new material we've added since then) go down this time. Just for the record, we're all in our 60s, so not too disimilar in age to the audiences at each. And yes, we got paid for both and fed nicely at the first, so can't really complain. 😀

  41. I go along to a local jam session and it's always good fun. The session I go to, if there's going to be any covers then they're announced in the facebook group so those who don't know it can prepare. I always just learn the chord progression and go with the flow on the night, no one wants or expects a note for note cover. Because I'm a bit crap, I tend to end up playing when the really good guitarists play, there's so much going on that they appreciate simple bass. I always find everyone friendly and forgiving of my incompetence and encouraging. It's definitely improved my playing.

  43. Playing here tomorrow - I've spent the last week with with a bunch of like-minded muso/mentors putting 7 bands together from students of the Spidermusic Swansea School of Rock. The age range is from 6-15, none of them had played in a band before and on Sunday they'll each be performing two covers and an original on a proper stage in the fantastic Gorseinon GEC. The manager, Andy, has been brilliant and opened up the venue specially on Thursday to show the kids around.

  45. The song: For some reason, I envisioned a male escort on his way home after a late... ehhh... shift, I suppose. He's a good guy, alone in a world which just doesn't understand. The technical stuff: Yamaha drums into Thomann mics into Behringer interface, as always. I tried a little bit of damping on the snare top skin, kind of going for an old-school disco sound but I think I missed. I tried additional percussion too, for effect, That's right. Cowbell. There are four bass tracks on there. A high one with the Ashdown octaver thing on, plus a low bass during the verses. The other two was messing around with a Boss Synth Bass pedal, which was a lot of fun. Guitars were a Tokai 335 and a Bacchus strat into an Avid Eleven, as always, but there's not much guitar on there. Sometimes it's just basses stacked or just one bass synth track. I wanted to do some wah stuff, in keeping with the theme, but the pot in my wah pedal is scratchy and cleaner couldn't cure it. Instead, I tried some envelope filter stuff which didn't really come out well. Vocals are me trying desperately not to sound like myself, including 6 tracks of BVs to try to make it sound all motown, like. Yeah, that didn't really come together either. Ah well.

Previous date forgotten, next one eagerly anticipated! Basses, 2xWal through various Helix FX. Guitar, strat also through Helices. Vox all Gregorian Chantified with Raum and some pitch shifting, drums EZ Drummer, sequencer AAS. All mixed in Ableton, with some Bias FX for good measure and plenty Neutron and Ozone.

  48. Well, despite 'stuff', I managed this ... Here is my contribution to the August 2022 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by one of the previous winners: Upside Downer. Well, she said 'Platform 2, eight o'clock.' It's now... Let me see... Hmm... Half-past midnight. Maybe she's not coming..? I'll give it another hour or so... Can't get much more minimalist that this, this month. A few minutes of me, loosening up on the drums. It's an e-kit (Millenium MPS850...). Recorded 'live' (that much will be obvious; no re-dubs or editing at all...), directly from the module into a USB stick, and transferred to Reaper, so the sounds are those of the e-kit itself. No treatment, other than my standard Reaper NY Glue compression on the Master tracks, as usual. Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.
