Great thread Chris! I've always been a big fan of The Stranglers and years ago, between 1979 and 1980 my first band were signed to the Stranglers management company, who's offices were located by the old Borough Market near London Bridge... Their offices were on the first floor of the building, and on the ground floor was a big open space where all of The Stranglers gear was stored. As part of the management deal, we were allowed to rehearse there overnight at the weekends and we used JJ's bass rig as our PA (his rig was a 2 kilowatt PA). I remember their roadie telling me that JJ liked to use a PA with multiple cabs as his rig so he could point them in different directions across the stage to make sure he could always hear himself properly. I also remember being shown some of JJ's basses at the time, including an absolutely beautiful, black, through-neck Yamaha BB bass which I thought was about the most amazing bass I'd ever seen at the time! As well as getting to meet the band a few times, we supported them at The New Theatre in Oxford on their 'Raven Tour' , and also at the infamous London Rainbow gig in April 1980 when Hugh Cornwall was in prison for 6 weeks for possession of drugs. It was an amazing night as the band brought in loads of famous artists to sing different songs in their set.. We shared our dressing room with Toyah (who wore more clothes back then than she does now. 😉) Also on the bill that night were a certain 'beat combo' from Manchester called Joy Division. Those were the days... 😁11 points

My 13 year daughter has started playing bass, and has been using mine. That is either an unmarked USA P or my pre CBS pre. The chances are she will drop one at some stage and I'd hate for her to feel bad about breaking one of mine so I have got another one for her to play. Purposely not calling it hers, so that I can play it and sell it if she loses interest. I tried out a non FSR model in a shop and it was absolutely brilliant. Super light, neck felt nice, high output and interesting sound. The pink one is being delivered today, will report back.7 points

I bought this used Ken Smith under a year ago, but have only recently started playing it exclusively. The more I play it, the more it wins me over. It's just an extremely well put together instrument. I find some pre-amps can be a little overbearing sometimes, but this one is just perfect. Granted I wouldn't want to use it with the bass boost on max for any length of time as I don't think I'd have any speakers left, but it has a great sound through my gig rig. I generally prefer jazz width necks, but this one isn't far off it and isn't too deep either. The action is also stupidly low, which I like, and it even at that height, it doesn't buzz. I'm well aware that I'm a fussy b***ard at the best of times, but I really can't think of anything negative to say about this bass. I just thought I would ask if anyone here has owned it and wondered what happened to it. It's a 2015 White Tiger. If it's you and you sold it for whatever reason, know that it's in good hands and it's being appreciated.7 points

1976 Fender Jazz Natural (Maple)+ Original Hard Case Up for sale is my beloved 1976 Jazz bass - took me ages to find my birth year bass but sadly needs must! All original - pups dated 76’ pots 75’ - the neck carries the longtime Fender Neck guru stamp of Herbie Gastelum - the indisputable ‘King of Feel’! Indeed - this bass has a beautiful feel and tone. She’s not without her battle scares - has some lacquer surface cracks and a couple of deeper marks on the bout - the G tuner also has a slight bend but this doesn’t affect functionally or tuning. She’s just been set up - so ready to go. Weight is 9.5lb - so very comfortable. Comes with her original hard case - locking catches are missing but centre latch works well and keeps the bass secure.5 points

That is just the guy to play it. I don't know which makes me cringe more, that bass, or this you tube guy. I watched a few of his videos once and it gave me this strange, really just awful feeling, like the come down from doing a quarter ounce of cocaine plus how you would feel the next day after getting drunk and accidentally having sex with your sister. Sorry for that, it's just that the dude makes me cringe in a way I don't know how to explain. I can't be the only one, right? God I hope not, because then everyone is gonna think I'm the weird one for saying that. All I can say is it takes some really creepy images to describe such a weird and obnoxious dude, but I'm really sorry if I grossed anyone out, I just had to get that off my chest.4 points

Some developments today. My makerspace colleague informed me that he believes he has a piece of Sweet Chestnut suitable for Phoenix; hopefully seeing it on Wed or Thur. I had been looking for a pup, my first choic was an EMG MM5TW ... but hens teeth are easier to find! I did locate a pair of EMG 40TWXs here on BC and was invensigating getting those ... and then I discovered that Thomann had the EMG MMTW in stock! They are a 4 string pup, but on Twiggy I used an EMG MMCS (Another 4 string pup) with great results. She was setup with a 16mm string spacing at the pup and given the scale length of 30 inches this actually worked very well for me. So ... I ordered one! With paypal I can spread the cost over 3 months (Cash flow is a challenge at present). So ... Wood - Hopefully sorted. Tuners - Arriving in the next week or so. Pickup - Hopefully here also in a week or so. I need to get a truss rod and a couple of carbon fibre stiffening rods ... but I'm almost at the point where I cn start the physical work on Phoenix! Very excited! S'manth x4 points

SOLD Hi All, Looking at moving on my Guild M85. Gorgeous bass that I've really enjoyed owning and using, but has had very little use this year since purchasing a Serek. These are pretty unusual - a chambered body and wooden bridge saddles for example - and I've not seen many come up. Put together really nicely, the fret work in particular is lovely, and has brilliant Grover tuners. I purchased it new in 2018. You can check out the full specs here; https://guildguitars.com/g/m-85-bass/ Its in lovely condition, and has always been moved in its genuine hard case. No marks that I can see (pretty hard to take pics of a gloss black bass!), but a little tarnishing on the bridge/pickup surrounds. Its was setup professionally last year, and has been used since, but not much this year. Strung with a nicely bedded in set of Fender flats - it sounds and looks as retro as you'd hope! Very hard to price as I can't find any others for sale - so if you are interested, but think the price is wrong, please get in touch. Would obviously prefer collection, but willing to package up - however only if the buyer pays for and arranges the courier. I'm fairly new here (was on here years and years ago) but sold a Future Impact and an Ashdown ABM earlier in the year, both with happy buyers. Any questions please ask!4 points

Hi Folks. For sale is this bass that I acquired recently from a colleague who was in urgent need of cash, It's a lovely instrument but it is surplus to my requirements as I only play 5 string basses, I'm a working player and I really don't have space for basses or other gear lying around the house that I don't use. I’ve tried going back to gigging with 4’s but, I’ll be honest, I find it to be a bit of a struggle, I am at home with my 5er and that’s that. This bass has been given a custom 'pimping' by a boutique shop in Poland called 'Restauracja Gitar', check em out on FB, they specialise in giving instruments a complete overhaul, refinish etc. Description (from RG's FB page): Bass made of the original Fender Jazz Bass 1962 Reissue manufactured in Japan in the late 90's. Thick polyurethane paint was mechanically removed from the guitar, than we repainted the body with our hard sealer and a thin layer of purple nitro - a technique used in the 1960/70 Fenders. Additionally, the neck is covered with a thin layer of honey nitro. The instrument has an alder body and a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. The whole thing is completed by alnico pickups, bone nut and a solid and reliable Gotoh hardware. Relic edition - characteristic nitro crackles, dents, abrasions and a natural patina on the hardware. This purple paint looks phenomenal live! In addition to the visual metamorphosis, we have performed a numer of service works so that the bass not only looks unique, but also sounds professional - Jazz Bass offers a very universal and wide spectrum of sound, it will work in virtually any situation! I truly recommend! Full guitar service: - frets leveling, crowning and polishing - fingerboard cleaning and maintenance - electronics copper shielding - nut adjustment - new jack socket - new strings - professional setup. Weight is around 9lbs 5oz. This instrument currently has a brand new Hipshot BT10 Bass Extender installed, the original tuner will be supplied. The bass will be shipped in a used hardcase(not tweed case pictured).3 points

Amp bought from Nick Lowe in 1979. Works fine although could probably do with a new set of valves. In remarkable condition considering age. Included is a homemade cover for the amp and a genuine Fender cover for the cab, though this is in poor condition. Collection only. There can't be that many of these around. SOLD3 points

Precision 4 string Bass Guitar. For sale is my ‘Bitsa’ Precision bass. It features Fender on the headstock and neck plate, and although it has Fender components it is NOT a Fender, and is not being sold as one. Its plays beautifully, with a fantastic neck. It has upgraded components incl Kent Armstrong pick up, heavier bridge and good tuners, new steel control knobs and electrics. It has been repainted and has a satin gloss finish, with some ‘orange peel’ evident on the paintwork but nothing much. Weight is around 9lbs It has new roundwound strings and has just had a pro set up so its super playable Only selling as i am reducing my basses! It will be supplied in a basic Tiger gig bag. I prefer collection, but if i send it it will be wrapped in bubblewrap at buyers risk. Thanks for looking3 points

SOLD For sale (no trade offers please) is a Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Precision PJ bass from 2013 in lovely Candy Apple Red with rosewood fingerboard. Comes in Fender shaped hard case. Long scale, right handed. This is a really great bass that punches above its price point. It has a normal precision nut width of 1.625 inches, but a slim and very playable front to back thickness, measured with digital calipers as just 0.792 inches at the 1st fret and 0.918 inches at the 12th fret (neck profile near identical to the American Specials that were known for their slim necks). Bought from another Basschatter, as a kind of stopgap bass whilst waiting for something else to come up. That is now here, so I need to let this one go. Excellent used condition, a few minor marks consistent with age and normal use - mainly some small marks near the jack as shown, and a tiny lacquer chip on back of headstock. No dings or chunks missing, and no marks visible from playing position. Solid agathis body, amber-tinted lacquered maple neck, with rosewood fingerboard, lemon oiled on recent string change. Strung with GHS Boomer nickel roundwounds 45-105, loads of life left in them. Gloss headstock with 70s style decals. 3-ply BWB plate with usual scratching on it. Bass weighs an insanely light 3.2Kg (7.2lbs) on my digital luggage scales and certainly feels like it. Easily the lightest and most comfy to play P bass I've ever tried. Stock open gear tuners, Hi-Mass bridge, & Fender Designed Alnico P pickup and DiMarzio style jazz pickup. I had a KiOgon VBT (Volume - Blend - Tone) wiring loom installed, with Switchcraft thru-body side jack. I put a set of black plastic jazz knobs on, just really to give a point of reference for the blend pot, even though it has a centre indent anyway. I will also include the stock push-on domed knobs. There are some great tones to be had when sweeping the blend knob. The wiring loom has solderless screw terminals, so if you like to tinker, it would be easy enough to change pickups. One thing I have to mention is the gorgeous Candy Apple Red finish. It's really hard to capture this on photos, but in person it looks killer, and has a lovely copper / burnt orange tint to it that you can only really appreciate in person. The case is a quality, well padded Fender shaped hard case. It is a little beat up but still rock solid. The latches all work and there is an under neck tab pull pocket. The keys are present but I just tried and it seems the lock doesn't work as it's just spinning round. Could be fixable, I don't know, I've never tried to lock it in all the years I've had it anyway. It's a great case anyway and lighter than the newer style Fender ones. Price includes postage to mainland UK address. Collection possible from Southport, or meet-up in North West within reason. I will knock 30 quid off the price if anyone collects. Otherwise, postage is for Parcelforce 24 hour next day, fully protected, trackable delivery (live tracking possible on the day). I should be able to ship within 1 working day of payment being received. Feel free to check my Basschat feedback and please PM if interested, or wanting more photos. It really is a great bass for the money, you'd be hard pushed to find a lighter, more comfy P bass without paying silly money for something custom! NO TRADE OFFERS WHATSOEVER PLEASE. I don't need any more basses, just some money and space back.3 points

After chatting to someone here about ACGs in general via an ad I listed then pulled, I have decided to do a very hard thing and start letting go of my basses. As some of you know I have left the UK permanently to live and work in California. Basses are not easy to travel with so Ive had to leave some behind. Crated in prep for cargo shipping to me but I thinks its safe to say it won't be any time soon. The bass itself is on ACG’s website model number 0257. https://acguitars.co.uk/project/0257-salace-e-type-headless-5/ Not getting the playing time that it deserves. An excellent lightweight chambered 8lb (just shy of 3.65kg) bass that’s super comfortable to play with its 30.5” scale length, suits E-C but I have it set up with heavy gauge hex core boomers and played lovely in B-G as well, The preamp is amazing, so versatile and great as a studio tool to get loads of tones, passive bypass gives a great natural tone as well. Preamp is the ACG DFM 5k/AP which is the full dual filter modular with push pull mid boost for both pickups, passive/active switch with tone roll off pot as well. Here are the specs. Body wood is Alder Top wood is Eucalyptus burl which is stunning Neck is Wenge and Ash Fingerboard is ACG’s signature acrylic impregnated Wenge for superior stability with luminescent inlays which glow on a dark stage and UV blacklight. Weight is 8.01lbs Bridge pickup is the AGC SB single coil and the neck is the ACG FB humbucker. Hipshot hardware. 17.5mm spacing (from memory it might be 17 -- check with Alan) There is 1 very small blemish on the back behind the lower horn I’ll include a close up picture. Comes with the original semi hard shell case. I ship locally and internationally tracked and signed in one of my custom made wooden crates. Here we go again: (Black 6 Stringer is my Keeper) Luminol dots activated with UV light. Shipping is extra dependent on location.2 points

The problem with the 3D cover was that it was colourful and sunny whereas the 2D one was dark with a sense of foreboding; far more in keeping with the mood of the album. Needless to say I only have the 2D one. 😉2 points

I have just joined this list of Starstream owners. I bought direct from Vox a Starstream Artist 1H, and think I might have got the last. Mine is black. I just arrived today - pretty quickly since I stopped dithering and order it over the weekend. Just had a quick play, once inserted the 2x 9V batteries, and feels good, sounds great. Very first impressions. I am going to see if I can swap out the strap buttons for Loxx buttons. But that will be later.2 points

Hi all, Having a clear out of some things I don't use that often, so up next is a Moon/Warmoth jazz bass. I picked up the fully-loaded body and tuners last year, and decided to go with a birdseye maple/ebony neck from Warmoth. It also has 'Arizona Blue' dot markers, which look great. Tele-bass headstock, as opposed to the usual J/P headstock. The body is late-70's I think and has original Tom Anderson/Schecter high-output single coils. The neck pickup needed a rewind which was completed by Armstrong pickups last year. They don't have a pickup cover, as was their style at the time. Body wood is Walnut and looks darker in real life than it does on the pictures. Due to its age, it's not in perfect condition, with a couple of smaller dings. It's very comfortable to play and balances nicely. Weight on the scales is 4.46kg or 9.8lbs. Controls are VVT. The tone put is push/pull which brings the bridge pickup out of phase. Not hugely different tones, and I think it could be wired for series/parallel if so desired. The switch is a 3-way pickup selector - neck, both or bridge. The neck is in perfect condition and looks and feels amazing. Warmoth quality is right up there with the best. Truss rod turns with no problems, as you would expect from a brand new neck. Comes with a brass nut. I had this put together for me by Jack's Instrument Services in Manchester back in the summer, but I need to thin the amount of basses I have, so it's up for sale. Price is £750. I'm not looking for any trades thanks. I am happy to ship, but will need to charge extra and can get a price for you based on where you are. Alternatively, collection from just outside Leek in North Staffs is preferable, or can meet somewhere reasonable for some petrol money. Thanks all, happy to answer any questions, or take additional photos.2 points
