Played the Three Tuns in Chepstow yesterday. Fantastic place, plenty of room to set up virtually no seats, so packed with people standing. Really great reception, despite me and drummer Paul both being covid vaxxed the day before and feeling decidedly subpar luckily the adrenaline switched in. Got some great feedback, especially Alex our prodigy guitarist. Definitely A buzz from going down well at a venue where lots of great bands have played.10 points

I'm old school, I'd expect to be given a set list... preferably the one that the band do! I say that because I once did a dep and was given a list of 25 songs by the guitarist. Got to the gig to find they were also using a dep drummer, who'd been given 25 songs by the vocalist... they weren't the same 25! I still cross paths with that drummer on gigs and it is always our first reminisce.8 points

Not long back from my second gig of the day - another village beer festival, this time in the village I live in. My wife drove me there and collected me afterwards, so I was able to have a couple of beers without worrying about getting nicked. This one was a Wirebirds gig, now a three piece blues rock band. We got a good reception from the audience and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Our new drummer is getting used to us and fitting in quite well now. I think I'll sleep well tonight after those two gigs, though!8 points

More like last weekend than last night, but anyway... a reunion of sorts. One of the bands wot I'm in used to be fronted by three brothers, but they haven't performed together for seven years. They got back together for a one-off. The venue is a 250-seater, and I'm happy to say it sold out in a few days. Drummer is used a percussion kit thing to keep the stage volume down, but it sounded great. I used my '71P, flats, HandBox R-400 and TKS 2x12 with a mic on it. Hopefully we'll do it again sometime. Here's a song from it.. bear in mind these front three are all knocking around 70. They've still got it.7 points

We had an outing today for the 5-piece variant of the band, so no keys or pedal steel and the drummer played a cajon with a foot stomp. It was a private party for a local cafè, celebrating 20 years in business and done mainly as a favour to them. We threw in 4 new covers (we're an originals band in the main and usually only include 1 cover, just to give the audience some respite). It was an interesting trial, as we'd not rehearsed them and I'd never even played them before we got to the gig (some frantic googling and youtube videos helped a great deal!) Still, it was nice to get out again and it gave me a good reason to avoid "strictly".6 points

Come again? It may not be one individual's fault (several people may be conspiring to make it bad), but it doesn't just happen. Not learning how eq, gain, etc works is definitely the fault of those who don't/won't do so. One of the biggest obstacles to a good band sound is each player insisting on using "their tone". The sound(s) they like might be pleasing in isolation, but combine them at any volume, especially if you fail to take account of room acoustics and the result can be a mess. It's part of the job of being a musician to understand these things and know how to compensate for them. At a dep' gig, the singer/guitar player was struggling with the mixer at soundcheck and it sounded appalling. I looked over his shoulder and the gains were all over the place. I suggested he set them properly and he said "What do you mean?". I set them correctly, adjusted the eq and all was fine. To his credit, he said "Oh. You do know what you're talking about" and asked me what I'd done, so I showed him.5 points

A bittersweet Soul Destroyers one last night. A party gig for lots of enthusiastic people, we played well (although I had some dyslexic foot trouble with my MS60B 🙄 ) but it was our tenor saxist's last gig after 24 years(!) with the band on and off. Gonna miss big Ben. That tenor looks small on him because he's 6'6"4 points

Played a couple of gigs this week with the ELO Experience. First was on Thursday at The Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone, which we’ve done many times. Great venue with helpful staff and a great view from the outside balcony at the rear of the stage. France looked so close, and a great sunset over Dungeness too! We had a couple of problems with the IEM’s but an enthusiastic near capacity audience were on good form, plenty of dancing which is always good. Then after the long drive north from Kent we were at Skegness Embassy Theatre last night. One of our favourite venues, with a good stage and again nice staff. It’s always a fine sounding room, and was a really enjoyable gig. Funny moment during the first set though - it was blowing a gale outside, lashing down with rain. During the song ‘Showdown’, the lyrics include ‘and it’s raining, all over the world...’ at which point I got a massive drop of water on my head whilst I was singing. Apparently the roof vents do leak sometimes, directly above me! Moved my gear and monitor during the interval, and the staff put down what we called a stage nappy to absorb the rain and prevent splashing me. Several of the capacity audience noticed my predicament and were very amused, (as were the rest of the band of course). Just got home from an afternoon gig with Franklin's Tower. It was at a beer festival in a village hall, which had a surprisingly good stage, very solid, about 9 metres by three and around 2 feet above the rest of the flooring. Surprising choice to ask a Grateful Dead band to play at a small village beer festival - but we seemed to go down well, even spotted one or two wearing GD T shirts. Even more surprisingly, we were passed a hand written note by a member of the audience requesting 'Althea', which wasn't on our set list but we played anyway. Back home now to eat and then off to my second beer festival of the day, in my home village where I am playing with the Wirebirds at the local cricket club.4 points

After last week’s ‘quiet’ affair I didn’t have any great expectations for last night’s outing. This was a town centre pub with a fairly young crowd and the 3 bouncers on the door told volumes. Not the sort of crowd that I’d expect would appreciate 70s Glam....this was an Agent job so they aren’t renowned for good product placement so to speak. Anyhow, I was genuinely surprised, we had a great night with lots of singing and dancing from the first number to the end of the second encore. Praised by the pub management and more bookings on the horizon, happy days.4 points

Kawia Aquarius AQB401 P Bass MIJ 1980's Trade for Trace Elliot Elf or Trace amp head Japanese P bass 42 mm nut width 8lbs 3.6kg Maple neck and Ash body. Great playing bass, I don't know the make of pickups but they can hold their own with any of the basses I own, This has been my backup bass, I have played a few gigs with it over the years and the tone always brings a smile, I now have too many basses and 90% of the time I now play my Thunderbird so the time is right to move this one on. Good condition , I think this has probably been refinished as I don't think this model came in this colour, there's a few marks and dings but nothing horrible the neck is good and straight frets are fine and the truss rod works easily and smoothly, low action and recent Dunlop Strings. Collection from Nr Plymouth Devon preferred but I can wrap it well and courier it if needed3 points -

Here's a lovely, very distinctive Ibanez SR1400, in Mojito Lime Green. I purchased it brand new from Andertons in 2019. It's in very good condition, it has been gigged a few times but always well looked after. Some minor player wear on the pickup covers, no chips, dents or dings that I could find anywhere on the guitar. It comes with a fitted Ibanez semi-hard case. Its really nice to look at and sounds and plays great (neck in particular is great), but I have no need for it currently. That's cool if it's a band where everyone gets an equal shout but (unfortunately) it doesn't always work like that. If you are working as a sideman or a sub, you might have to play a different instrument than you want. I got offered a ton of decent gigs with a busy band (some of the gigs are with members of a pretty legendary band), and the condition was that they wanted me to play a black Precision. So guess what? I leave the F Bass at home and take out my black Precision.3 points

Did a live video shoot for my new function band, in a barn on a farm. It’s a wedding venue, so not quite as rustic as one may think 😅 Was pretty good; we had a stand-in drummer though because our normal tub thumper was in the hospital with his wife who was giving birth to baby no 2 - we couldn’t really ask him to put us first 😅 First time I’ve used in ears (to avoid too much noise onstage for the audio recording) and I have to say I enjoyed it quite a lot. Still an old school Luddite who likes a rig making noise behind me but the IEMs worked a treat. Not sure I’ll be shelling out big money for any just yet, wait for the gigs to pile up a bit more first…3 points

Steve Hackett at the Apollo in Manchester. A sit-down, chin-stroking kinda gig, but the level of musicianship on the stage was unbelievable. 96% blokes in the audience, there we a few ladies looking dutiful but bored...first half was his solo stuff, then the whole of Foxtrot, with an encore of Firth of Fifth and Los Endos, all executed perfectly. One thing, tho; there was a drum solo near the end, which went on a bit, and in The Quiet Bit, where said drummer tinkles about with stuff quietly, a voice soared from the the audience; 'Get onnn with it!' The place roared with laughter, but the drummer's face set like a handful of mince, and when they were doing the 'all bow in a line' at the very end, I clearly saw him say to the bassist 'Bunch of f**king tw**s'... If drum solos are getting short shrift even at Prog concerts, I think it's safe to say they've very much had their day...3 points

Well I'm not sure how one defines 'serious' but they/we put a lot of effort into the look and I'm the only non-mod in real life in the group. There's a big backdrop with a Vespa and a few union jacks on the stage. I don't have the sideburns or the t shirt with the bullseye on it so I do try and make the effort. For reference the other guitars are a Paisley telecaster and a 335, both into vintage appropriate fender and vox amps. A bongo into a helix DID stand out a bit.2 points

Mrs Wrinkley is on the road to recovery and I’ve organised a sitter, so I will be there for at least part of the day, certainly until early afternoon, hopefully that leaves enough time for the Scrumpets to ensure adequate stocks of crumble are on hand. I may not have enough time to pick up a cab beforehand, mine is over at a friends, so if anyone has a spare I could use on the day , I would be grateful, I’m also on the lookout for a compact 1x10, should anyone have something for sale, can’t afford “Barefaced” prices tho’, needs to be cheap and cheerful. I drove out to Heathfield today (It's about midway between Royal Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne) to visit https://luthierssupplies.co.uk/, it is an aladdin's cave of beautiful wood (and other luthier related stuff) run by David Dyke, the atmosphere is full of the most lovely aromas full of promise of things to come. I'd visited once before, on the 8th of August to collect materials that were intended to be the basis of Flo, my second bass build. Pictured below is Twiggy (My first bass build) and the block of maple for Flo as well as the truss rod, carbon fibre support rods and wood to form the skunk stripes. Just 24h later it looked like this. Today, in an act of amazing kindness and generosity, I was given (at no cost) replacements for many of the bass build bits I lost in the fire. A lovely block of Idigbo (West African Hardwood), truss rod, two carbon fibre shafts and some strips of wood for the skunk stripes.
