@Old Horse Murphykindly tipped me off that BassBros had a really nice American 70s reissue Jazz just in, so I contacted Will before it even went up on the site and snaffled it. Super nice with flamed neck but - get this - weighs 8.0 pounds! The lightest Jazz I have ever played, fantastic! Only changes I made were to swap the stock white for a black scratchplate and to pop some Fender flats on. Pics or it didn't happen:14 points

Unfortunately, some unexpected bills are making me list this beautiful bass. I got it second hand earlier in the year, when it genuinely looked liked it hadn't been played. It really is a very special bass that plays and sounds unlike anything I've been fortunate enough to play before. It is in amazing/unmarked condition - the only thing I can see are some little marks on the front of the headstock that I can't get to show in a picture (the specs in the pic, are dust!).. It features the twin Serek Single pickups and series / parallel selector for incredible tonal flexibility; gives you sounds from p-bass, jazz bass, stingray or single pick-up Gibsons. It is both incredibly light, and extremely resonant - and beautifully put together. Here’s the specs; Orientation: Righty Scale Length: 34" Body Wood: African Mahogany Frets: Fretted Fingerboard Wood: Indian rosewood Pickup: Serek Singles (Side-by-Side with series/parallel rotary switch) Body Finish: Solid Colour Satin Plum Pickguard: Black (B-W-B ply) Tuning Keys: Clover Along with all the other amazing standard spec - Hipshot bridge and tuners etc. The pics aren't amazing, but happy to get anything more specific if required - it really is beautiful. I've played it at every gig with one of our bands over the year (high-end weddings and corporate functions)... its always been transported in a Mono Case or its own Serek Gig-Bag (which is included). Its wearing a fairly new set of D'addario nickel round wound strings. This spec currently comes out at $3325 (inc international shipping) on the Serek website, which at current rates comes out at £2995. Obviously, thats not including import duties (which a quick calculation put at £750?!)... and the waiting period (which was 12 months when I last checked?). I currently can't see any other Sereks for sale in the UK. Straight sale preferred. Given the scarcity in the UK, its pretty hard to value - so if you are really interested, talk to me! The only trade I would consider is a P-Bass with at least £1500 coming my way. I would much prefer not to ship a bass of this value, however, will package it up assuming that the buyer arranges and pays for insured shipping. Happy for you to come to me to buy, or would drive for a meet if necessary (happy to go up as far as Bristol, or any of Devon/Cornwall/Somerset to meet). If you are interested or want more info, please get in touch.7 points

Well, that's gone surprisingly pleasingly well! And even more surprising pleasing, is that it's flat! : So tomorrow, when the glue is fully cured, I'll get it on the bass and see what I need to do to get the action where it should be Bridge earth is also done so pretty soon I can see if I can get it wired up and making a sound or two.6 points

Hello Everyone, Just thought I would give you all a heads up about the £10 IKEA chopping board that has made a most excellent pedalboard to sit on top of my amp, it won’t suit everything but it’s nice to have the controls to hand since I’m always playing around with settings. Apologies for the rubbish pictures, I’m too excited to wait until the sun rises again around May in Scotland. The space underneath is perfect for a wee power supply and gives the room a nice glow (and reminds me if I’ve left the power on again).5 points

I’m hardly likely to play a gig this year, if the band does have a gig this year the requirements are fairly small in terms of volume, small venues. I used 1 x 208 and the Mini last night in a rehearsal, it was plenty loud. This is it, the final countdown, “The Last Mall” . Tower of power in a flyweight GR RIG. All as new. GR 350 Watt MINI and 2 x GR AERO GRAPHITE 208’s. All bought this year. I bought Hot covers for the Cabs @ £47.00 each. I’m asking a Paltry £1,450.00 for the complete Rig! Weighing in at 17.3 Kg’s, cabs are 8Kg each Head 1.3Kg. Just in case your looking at only a cab or just the head and one cab here’s a break down: Reduction: 1 x GR 208 Cab £575.00 with cover and original packaging Reduction: 2 x GR 208 Cabs £1,100.00 with covers and original packaging Reduction: GR350 Watt MINI £275.00 boxed Retail on the “Flyweight” would be £1,850.00 With covers £1,930.00. Yours for only £1,375.00 AND THATS POSTED UK MAINLAND Here’s the Gubbins from the horses mouth: https://www.grbass.com GR MINI https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/GR_Bass_Mini.html 208 Cab https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/GR_Bass_Cabinets.html Save yersell’ a shedload of money I will be going down the combo route. I have kept the cab packaging and the Mini, so courier is a goer UK Mainland only. I am being realistic about gig prospects and this rig is overkill in aesthetics and Volume. Thanks for looking, enquiries and offers via PM.4 points

New update :- Replacement amp arrived today and is working perfectly. Didn't take as long as first one. Clarity of tone and an amazing depth. With the amp running flat is thunderous even at lower volumes. I had to dial the bass EQ back to around 9-10 o clock on the amp to get a home tone i liked without rattling pics on the wall. I can now get that overdriven valve tone. Downside is that the original amp i returned was sent back to me from customs in UK stating it was too DENSE and they could not verify what was in the box with their scanning equipment and therefore they could not ship by plane. I've been offered a full refund on postage. Leszek is having a think about what to do next as he's confused too. Dave4 points

I’ve found the cleanest way to remove tape residue can sometimes just be to use more tape. Put some new tape that isn’t going to fall apart over the residue, then peel it off and it often takes the old stuff with it. Repeat as necessary with a fresh section.4 points

Probably the best bass I've ever owned. However as it's sitting under the stairs unplayed since I've rekindled my love of all things Musicman, it's up for grabs. It's a Fender Custom Shop Custom Classic Jazz Bass in Mercedes Blue made in 2010. Easily the best neck I've ever owned. Quarter sawn maple with a rosewood fingerboard and pearl inlays. It has the smoothest finish with lovely rolled edges to the fingerboard. The original pre amp and pickups were not to my taste (too brittle sounding and an unreliable jack socket) so I pulled them out and replaced them with EMG JV pickups with a BTS control system. (Separate bass and treble controls and a pickup pan) I also fitted the correct Hipshot extender. (original E tuner is in the case) All the paperwork is there including the birth certificate signed by those lovely Fender people. There are a few blemishes to the paint work on the body. I've tried to show them in the pictures. The neck is unblemished apart from the tiniest dent on the far end of the headstock. Currently it has flats on. Fender G&G case with outrageous red flock interior. I'll let the pictures tell you more. I can't post this one but would entertain the idea of a meet up somewhere as I travel about a fair bit with my work.3 points

*** SOLD***HX Stomp XL £450 ***SOLD*** See Line 6 product page here. Purchased this from Coda Music in Stevenage on 9th September this year which makes it 27 days old. Got it home, updated it to the latest software version and then put it back in its box where it's been ever since. I play straight into a QSC and I'm going back to using the much simpler Fishman Platinum Pro. No idea why I bought it really, it's my third Stomp now, the first two went unused too, I suppose I thought I'd use it but was wrong... thrice. It is as new, still has it's screen cover on, complete with USB, mains and original packaging and updated to the latest firmware Helix/HX 3.15 (released February 8, 2022). You can pick up from Southend or meet between our locations or I'm happy to deliver to you (within reason, try me) or add a tenner to the price (£460) and I'll post next day delivery. Happy to answer any questions.3 points

OK, but I keep hearing people saying its all the fault of the baby boomers, they had it easy, cheap housing, full employment blah blah. That was then, things have changed, not better or worse, just different. Yes, I got my first mortgage in 1977, but it swallowed both of our salaries and we had no carpets, curtains or furniture. Couldn't afford a foreign holiday till 1988 and could not afford to have children. You make life choices and what to spend your money on. Whining about the past is futile, and mostly sepia tinted.3 points

That’s fantastic! It turns out my avatar name is a character in Fururama, although my use of it predates the show’s use of it. I’m a big fan:3 points

I must admit, I am adding some wax to the tru-oil finish and it really does give it a final sheen and evenness to the finish. I couldn't get the Birchwood Casey one but I got a CCL fine wax and it goes on lovely... it's a gun stock wax and really finishes it off!3 points

You enabler …. You’re encouraging this poor man to buy more in uncertain economic times and the chain reaction of GAS fuelled purchases will likely see him turfed out of his hovel for failure to pay rent because he’ll have spent that money on “di pedals” and other “must-haves”. He and his family will then likely end up sleeping under railway arches being harassed by someone relentlessly playing the zither. And it will probably be snowing too. I hope you’re pleased with your days work spent “stimulating the economy” @stewblack what next ? Shooting pigeons with a bow and arrow to keep the streets cleaner of bird poo?3 points

Part of the problem is that politicians are too stupid to be able to tell the difference between the actual charger (the plug bit that plugs into the mains socket) and the cable which has a load of other uses as well as that of suppling power to the device for the purposes of charging the battery. Some personal observations. 1. All my chargers (the plug bits) are already standardised with USB A sockets. In fact it's been a very long time (more than 10 years) since I bought any consumer device which, if it did come with a charger, came with a different connector. Even the last two desk lamps I bought from Ikea are powered from a plug with a USB A socket on it. 2. As I said in my previous post I'm already standardised for my cables, they are all USB A to Lightning (apart from the laptop which requires a chunkier PSU and cable anyway). 3. The lifespan of the cable used to connect these devices to the charger as well as other devices DOES NOT EQUAL the lifespan of the device. I'm very careful with my cables, but at best they still only last a couple of years. Most people I know have to replace their cables at least every 6 months either because they get lost or damaged. 4. I need a cable (and PSU) for every device that needs charging because usually they all need charging at the the same time. 5. It will be a long time before I need to replace every chargeable device I currently own that doesn't have a USB C cable for charging (or data transfer), and I suspect that by that time USB C will already be obsolete and have replaced by something else, so I doubt I will ever see the "benefits" of this policy.3 points

G&L L-2500 ..been my back up for a few months but another purchase forces sale ..had very little use ..no fret wear in good condition though was purchased with damage as shown in last picture..doesn’t effect playability at all and is a great looking bass with a huge array of sound options .. weight is 4.3kg and includes good quality gig bag ..price includes uk postage but would prefer collection from Wymondham Norfolk or I will personally deliver within 80 miles..as it’s cheaper and safer than a courier with insurance ..that doesn’t cover musical instruments anyway 😜 Tech Specs Number of Strings:5 Left-/Right-handed:Right-handed Body Shape:Tribute L-2500 Body Material:Poplar Body Finish:Satin Polyurethane Color:Black Frost Neck Material:Hard Maple Neck Shape:Medium C Neck Joint:6-way Bolt-on Radius:12" Fingerboard Material:Hard Maple Fingerboard Inlay:Black Blocks Number of Frets:21, Medium Jumbo Nickel Scale Length:34" Nut Width:1.75" Nut Material:Bone Bridge/Tailpiece:Leo Fender-designed G&L Saddle Lock Tuners:Traditional Open Gear with Clover buttons Neck Pickup:G&L MFD Bass Humbucker Bridge Pickup:G&L MFD Bass Humbucker Controls:1 x master volume, 2-band Active EQ Switching:1 x series/parallel switch, 3-way preamp mode switch, 3-way toggle pickup switch2 points

Absolutely! The thread would be pretty boring if someone posted the worst ever cover, and we all just replied “yep, that’s the one”! 😀 These kind of threads are great for dividing opinion.2 points

Forgive me father for I have sinned. I favoured the J pickup, and it sounded good. I've just been noodling along to Numans I Assassin album on the new 1100s fretless, and although I'm strictly a P guy, I found myself really liking just the J pickup, lovely a burbly. I don't know what Pino used on that album but I'm assuming his Stingray, and the bridge J is remarkably close to his tone. This is a fantastic bass. And yes, I did go full Partridge,2 points

Just to offer a balancing point or two to the "my career teacher tried to kill my dreams" posts. Firstly, the comments from successful Musicians, footballers, astronauts who were told they couldn't do it etc suffer from selection bias. Those people are maybe more likely to comment. Second, I think it is OK for a careers advisor, along with helping you to find the route to your desired career, to also give you information about success rates and so on. All part of making an informed choice. Personally, I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do, but eventually drifted into what suited me.2 points

BASH NEWS BULLETIN! Got a very interesting PM from 'our' Stevie, as follows: "Here's a heads-up on some of the cabs I'll be bringing with me on Sunday: https://www.lfsys.co.uk . I've not announced this development on Basschat yet but will be doing so during the course of this week (now done, see Affiliates section - Mike). I guess this means that the officlal world premier of LFSys bass cabs will be at the SW Bash😊." Needless to say, I dived straight onto Stevie's website - and I really liked what I saw! Basically, what he's done is to small-batch-productionise two version of the 12" home-build cab project that's known to many on this forum and features regularly at our S-W Bashes. The rationale is pretty obvious: lots of people have been telling Stevie how impressed they are with the self-build cab but don't have the time or skill to take it on. Most of them go on to say that they'd buy into it if someone would build it for them. Well, now Stevie is that someone in the guise of LFSys. Won't spoil it by telling you any more, but suffice to say that they look the business from what I've seen on the website. Can't wait to see and hear them on Sunday! A NEW-PRODUCT WORLD PREMIER AT THE S-W BASS BASH? I need to go and have a lie-down! Hang on a minute, there's chienmortbb's range of cables too! This calls for an extra-large portion of Mrs. Scrumpy's crumble! (Don't worry guys, there'll be plenty left for you 🙂 )2 points

Funnily enough, I get a 50/50 split of hate/love for my Shuker fretless. Some people seem to think it's the most incredibly beautiful bass they have ever seen, and yet others say it's truly hideous and an affront to their senses. Certainly seems some think it's ugly but others not at all...2 points

True story: At school I told my careers advisor in front of my whole class I wanted to ve a session musician. She replied, “That’s all well and good Daniel, but what will you do for a real job?” In your face lady! My bass has been solely paying all of my bills for many, many years now and has been my obsession for over 35 years (as those who have seen my reviews know!)2 points
