And - the action is perfect! That is a genuine surprise. And it's useful too because it means that @Happy Jack will still have a fully-interchangeable-with-no-adjustment-needed fretless neck when he gets bored with the whiteness of his Mike Lull and decides he wants that repainted in pink too! There is very little to do with the neck other than sand any glue wipes away and re-slurry and buff it. Same with the fretboard. It's starting to look like a bass: If I get some time this afternoon or tomorrow morning, I'll have a bash at fitting the electrics.6 points

Unfortunately, some unexpected bills are making me list this beautiful bass. I got it second hand earlier in the year, when it genuinely looked liked it hadn't been played. It really is a very special bass that plays and sounds unlike anything I've been fortunate enough to play before. It is in amazing/unmarked condition - the only thing I can see are some little marks on the front of the headstock that I can't get to show in a picture (the specs in the pic, are dust!).. It features the twin Serek Single pickups and series / parallel selector for incredible tonal flexibility; gives you sounds from p-bass, jazz bass, stingray or single pick-up Gibsons. It is both incredibly light, and extremely resonant - and beautifully put together. Here’s the specs; Orientation: Righty Scale Length: 34" Body Wood: African Mahogany Frets: Fretted Fingerboard Wood: Indian rosewood Pickup: Serek Singles (Side-by-Side with series/parallel rotary switch) Body Finish: Solid Colour Satin Plum Pickguard: Black (B-W-B ply) Tuning Keys: Clover Along with all the other amazing standard spec - Hipshot bridge and tuners etc. The pics aren't amazing, but happy to get anything more specific if required - it really is beautiful. I've played it at every gig with one of our bands over the year (high-end weddings and corporate functions)... its always been transported in a Mono Case or its own Serek Gig-Bag (which is included). Its wearing a fairly new set of D'addario nickel round wound strings. This spec currently comes out at $3325 (inc international shipping) on the Serek website, which at current rates comes out at £2995. Obviously, thats not including import duties (which a quick calculation put at £750?!)... and the waiting period (which was 12 months when I last checked?). I currently can't see any other Sereks for sale in the UK. Straight sale preferred. Given the scarcity in the UK, its pretty hard to value - so if you are really interested, talk to me! The only trade I would consider is a P-Bass with at least £1500 coming my way. I would much prefer not to ship a bass of this value, however, will package it up assuming that the buyer arranges and pays for insured shipping. Happy for you to come to me to buy, or would drive for a meet if necessary (happy to go up as far as Bristol, or any of Devon/Cornwall/Somerset to meet). If you are interested or want more info, please get in touch.5 points

A guy who worked with a company I worked with for a while found out I was a bass player. He was on the lookout as he had apparently mislaid his bass player. He then proceeded to tell me in no uncertain terms that if I wanted the pleasure of playing for him I would need a P bass, Sansamp and use a pick. As I didn`t have a P bass, a Sansamp and can`t play with a pick to save myself, I told him where to go. This turned out to be the right thing to do as it turns out he was a right fu*kwit!4 points

Frank is an Angel! I was drooling over an HX Stomp XL he was selling, but I could not afford (A recent fire in my flat wiped out most of my possessions and I am slowly needing to replace them). I'd had a HX Stomp previously, but sold it (pre-fire) as it did not have enough footswitches for my gigging (Giggling!?) style. But the Stomp XL is perfect! In a totally unsolicited way, Frank reached out to me and we have reached an arrangement that works for us both. A true gent! Thank you @Frank Blank S'manth xxx4 points

Way to ruin a happy (for a change) thread. Well done, Debbie downer. 'Talentless'? Tell me you've never actually seen her gig without saying you've never actually seen her gig.4 points

Buy a P if you want a P, however the basses you already have are perfectly adequate, the BB will do anything a P will do and both are far more versatile. If you want one for the 'image', be aware it's a boring, nondescript bass that no-one in an audience will notice, either visually or sonically. Each to their own, though.3 points

So... last post from me with updates - it's finished! Re-assembled today and it's a banger! I'm never confident when it comes to electrics but all re-soldered and working and playing lovely. Thanks again to all who commented and especially to @Andyjr1515 with all his advice and countless replies to my messages. It's been an interesting experience and not something I want to repeat any time soon! However, anyone reading this, don't be put off by something of this ilk. I was worried given the fact it wasn't a budget bass that I could pink torpedo it up but a careful and softly softly approach with the wood paid dividends! I think it looks great and I am sure that this one will be sticking around for a while! Anyway.... a few more final pics: Control cavity fully shielded Battery box and control cover added - I hated the stock black plastic battery cover Xotic out in so I added the Gotah double battery box - much better! I am really pleased with the control cover as well - I may have mentioned that! Pups are in, bridge in place and all electronics soldered in and finalised. I added some extra earthing just to be sure! Scratchplate and knobs added: And a few of the final assembly! That's it for this one. I wonder what's next? A 'from scratch' build maybe? Possibly... I am intrigued...3 points

Sold 2002 USA Stingray bass. Red translucent finish. Maple fingerboard. 3EQ preamp. Mirror scratchplate. A well used, but well loved bass, having done hundreds, maybe thousands of gigs in the last 12 years or more than I've owned it. Bought by me in the States. Frets have slight wear, but still fine. The laquer has some cracking starting mostly from the scratchplate screws, and a few bits chipped off here and there. (it is a 20 year old gigging bass!) It has new set of 45-105 strings fitted, set up by The Gallery a while ago, and sounds and plays great like a decent US Stingray should. Only selling as I have an older 2eq Stingray (just prefer the sound), a early G&L, and an old Jazz I use more now, and shame to let it sit unused as it plays well. Could be up for a swap for an early G&L L1000, or another classic 4 string, or some PA gear. Collection from Bushey, Herts. Will be supplied in a useable but old gig bag, but I have a genuine MM hardcase available for an extra £50.3 points

USA MusicMan Sterling 5 available. Amazing bass that I've owned from new, and purchased about 10 years ago. The neck has to be played to be believed, and the range of sounds is amazing (always gets positive comments in the studio). The HS pickup combo gives so many options, and being a 5 string is pretty unusual. The gold finish has mellowed over the years and looks mega cool, and the pickguard has also yellowed a little... It looks great! Standard brilliant MusicMan hardware all-round, and is completely standard. Serial Number Check brings up this info; Manufactured December 15th, 2008 Build Code 196-69-10-09-CS-CR Model Sterling 5 HS Color True Gold Neck Maple Neck Maple Fretboard Hardware Chrome Hardware It's in amazing condition, has only ever been transported in its original hard case, or a Mono bag. There are some nibbles on the headstock, and a ding on the rear of the top edge of the body (see pics). There don't seem to be many for sale (especially 5s), so the value is hard... Let me know if you're really keen but have an offer. Original hard case is included (but is missing a handle). I don't really want to ship - would prefer you to be able to have a look and check you are happy with the instrument. Happy for you to come to me to buy, or would drive for a meet if necessary (happy to go up as far as Bristol, or any of Devon/Cornwall/Somerset to meet). If you are interested or want more info, please get in touch.2 points

Your 424 already is a P, better than most out there and with a number of notable improvements over the original design. Get a ‘real’ P for the look but you’ll have to spend an awful lot to get a Fender/whatever that sounds better than your 424. ‘Indistinct’ compared to your jazz? Well, jazzes have a more articulate sound in general. You might need to EQ them differently. You might want to try different strings. Want something more civilised? Try a 1024.2 points

So I just need to bring 1 big foam rubber glove, is that for kitchen duties? I'll wash if you dry.2 points

The Yamaha 424 is an excellent Precision Bass variant. If you're after a different tone, a 'real' Precision Bass isn't going to be far off what you already have. Maybe throw on a set of flatwounds, if you haven't already.2 points

Surely the dream bass multi-effect is just the next one that you buy, and then shortly thereafter sell on the marketplace here? I'm looking at you @stewblack! But yes - open source, build your own is a very nice idea. For me, decent preamp, compressor, tuner, some modulation, and then ideally some spare digital processing for future proofing/loading other processing. It's beginning to sound like the MOD Dwarf (or whatever that project was called). Phil2 points

Can you afford it? If yes, will you use it? If yes, do you care about brand names? If no, get a Squier (the more expensive models are amazing) If yes, get a fender player series or search out a Japanese Fender. (If rich, buy a vintage one you never play)2 points

The Yamaha should be fine for what you’re doing but until you’ve played/got a Precision you’ll never really know and it will forever be lurking in your mind. As such get Precision hunting.2 points

The hive mind thinks that you WILL end up with a Precision… you won’t be able to help yourself. Just get one asap and save yourself further pain.2 points

Only been 6 months or so, but finally got round to putting the new scratchplate on this. Went with the Mike Mills look in the end, I think it looks rather well. Very pleased with how this bass feels, sounds, and now looks. 😁 Thanks for the suggestions.2 points

My EXL190's are £24 the XT's are £33 at the moment in Strings Direct. If the XT's last 6 mths or more they will be far better value for money for me. Dave2 points

The expression “house poor” comes to mind. The bank’s interest rates were higher , and there were times one had to juggle at the end of the month. But at this point the mortgage has been paid and I am truly the lord of my little manor. Your mind set changes when you become a property owner , if anything breaks it’s up to you to fix it. We have a small house , but a big yard , and Herself is a gardener. And I’m thankful we did it. It was not always easy. For much of it I was self employed and paying business rent and a mortgage. I was the last one to get paid.2 points

Well, that's gone surprisingly pleasingly well! And even more surprising pleasing, is that it's flat! : So tomorrow, when the glue is fully cured, I'll get it on the bass and see what I need to do to get the action where it should be Bridge earth is also done so pretty soon I can see if I can get it wired up and making a sound or two.2 points

I must admit, I am adding some wax to the tru-oil finish and it really does give it a final sheen and evenness to the finish. I couldn't get the Birchwood Casey one but I got a CCL fine wax and it goes on lovely... it's a gun stock wax and really finishes it off!2 points
