  1. I was at the South West Bass Bash yesterday, albeit very briefly, but thankfully long enough to pick up the superb fretless built for me by the supremely talented @Jabba_the_gut. I am pretty much gobsmacked by it, I don't know how a bass can look this good and sound even better than it looks. If you hold a note steady and then begin to add a bit of vibrato I swear the note gets louder, there's some sort of freaky juju going on with the fingerboard. Anyway, short scale, stainless steel nut and fret markers, semi-hollow, piezo, I'm not really a technical man when it comes to instruments but Jabba builds the most beautiful basses and they fit in exactly with the type of music I play so, it's perfect. I am a very lucky man, I get to play (another) work of art. Cheers Jabba, its a f***ing masterpiece.

  2. The Rigger in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Saturday. We'd capped it at 200 and it sold out. The sound check took a full hour due to never ending broken cables and channels. I think the venue need to spend some money on the gear! Then when it was time for us to go on, the two DIs had been moved so the guitarist didn't know which guitar to plug into which DI. It's always frustrating sitting there behind the kit, raring to go, and having to wait for other people to get their sh*t together! The supports were both ace and well received, but the crowd went crazy for the whole of our 1.5 hr set. Middle aged moshing never looked so dangerous and there were a couple of moments I wondered whether I should stop playing, but apparently no-one was injured The band's called Headsticks and we're going around Europe with Crass starting this week

  3. I took this in as a PX trade. A Maruszczyk Elwood 5a. Wasn't even sure if I was going to keep it but I was interested in the pickup config as I sort of missed my Ray but also tended to use a Jazz on the neck PU 90% of the time. I know nothing about these basses other than what I see mentioned on here. If I'm honest, I'm mighty impressed. Can't fault the craftmanship and finish. Neck is a little chunkier than I like but I'll get used to it. So yesterday, I gave it a bit of an outing with a couple of muso mates as I'd only tinkled around with "at home" volumes. Don't know why I didn't try these before now. It has the tone I've been looking for for ages now. I'm sure I've owned other basses that would have achieved it too but I had no idea how to find it. This was sort of "plug & play" if you like. I'm hooked. It's a keeper. Seems to deliver everything I need from a bass.

  4. Just took delivery of this rather splendid USA Lakland 44-64. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my Fender AVRI precisions.

  5. Two theatre gigs over the weekend, at Wellingborough and then Cannock. Both well attended, and so far the economic situation doesn't seem to be affecting ticket sales although the high energy bills haven't really kicked in yet. We had a new PA guy with us for October and he's doing a great job - managed to help resolve a mysterious booming on one of the gigs - why do bands always assume it's the bass player though? Of course it wasn't, and it got sorted just fine. Managed to remember to bring the right bass this time too. 😅

  6. Forth gig since lockdown, on Saturday night. Had fun playing this song. I even got a solo - blink and you'll miss it. 10000000_8108811425827229_1745709608052968495_n.mp4

  7. To make such a great day like today there's a number of success factors. Firstly great organisation and infrastructure( Mike and his entourage), secondly great attendees (some who drove 100's of miles each way) and thirdly some fantastic basses and cabs. Tick, tick, tick. We should all feel great pride in the joint achievement and look forward to the next one.

  8. I've said how much I enjoyed the cab shoot-out and the LFSys cabs - but very remiss of me not to have thanked the people who made it happen: so thanks to Phil and Stevie. For me, the VERY BEST thing of all is that I didn't need to lift a finger to make it happen 😊

  9. This should have come first but massive thanks to the following, Firstly @scrumpymike and the Scrumpettes, how they stand the cachoohomy for 6 plus hours… they must love you Mike. @Andyjr1515who kindly fettled my nut slots ( ooh er missus) and made my Marcus Miller M2 really playable. To, @Phil Starrand @steviefor their help and support both at the bash and through the year. A lot of work and planning goes into those DIY designs and the best of luck with LFSys @stevie I only put the tablet holder into the raffle at the last minute but the pleasure it gave @Smanthwas heartwarming. To everyone else, thanks for making it a great day and forgive me for forgetting your names.

  10. I'm in the process of moving flat in a hurry due to the landlord selling the property so unfortunately I need to raise some money quickly - this is a reluctant sale. As a result of a Fender factory mess up, this bass (serial number: US15099634) is a USA Geddy with a neck with black fretboard inlays (meant for the limited run red version), rather than the standard pearloid inlays. This is a unique one of a kind USA Geddy. More details on how this came about, and some correspondence with Fender to verify this, can be found on this thread from the bass's previous owner: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/302288-withdrawn-fender-usa-geddy-lee-signature-jazz-bass/ Plays and sounds as good as you've heard these basses do, the pickups are absolutely huge and beastly sounding and the tone control is the most effective and wide ranging I've ever experienced on any passive bass. The neck has a unique and super comfortable oiled back of the neck finish in addition to the period-specific finish and binding on the rest of the neck. Comes with Fender hard case with all the case accessories. Condition is overall very good with a dent on the bottom edge of the body, a bit of light finish scratching due to buckle rash and a couple of very small knocks on the headstock (please see photos). Due to the fact I have to move home, this is collection only from Preston Park area of Brighton. The price is firm, and reflects the need for a quick sale whilst also hopefully making it more appealing as a cash on collection only sale. Here is my feedback from previous Basschat sales for assurance of an honest transaction: https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/306417-feedback-for-edlib-3/ If you have any questions or want additional pictures, message me. Thanks.

  14. Someone asked if I was going to add a fingernail scoop for the control hatch. I solve the hatch access in a number of different ways and sometimes do carve a scoop in the body. However, I'm no skilled nitro painter and couldn't be sure that it wasn't going to look a bit naff, so used an alternative that has worked pretty well on a number of builds. It's simply to shave half a mm or so off at one end of the rebate, so that a firm push in the right place lifts the whole thing that can then be just lifted off: I've had a decent day at it today: - fretboard re-dressed - neck re-slurry-and-buffed - still have to tidy up the wiring with some ties, but we have sound! So far I've just tried the 'tap test' - but the sound difference from the three different voices of the Fluence bodes very well indeed Tomorrow I'll get the neck and strings back on and see what we've got. Then that leaves just a tidy up around the now-fitted Dunlop flush strap locks and I reckon it's done. And the plan is to meet @Happy Jack at the forthcoming SE Bassbash, in a couple of weeks' time, and hand it across.

  15. I have the original Forte with the compressor , not the new drive version. And use Bergantino HDN cabs. This is only 700 watts at 4 ohms , but I’ve never come remotely close to maxing it out , tons of headrooom. It’s a simple , clean , fairly transparent amp , with some serious slam. It was easy to dial in , and sounds gorgeous. I think my stage sound is the best it’s ever been. I’ve become a complete fan.

  18. Hey Everyone, With gigs going well this Summer I decided to go and grab a new rig which was a huge deal given I've always been a one-bass kind of guy. It's been 12 years since my last purchase and I've never bought a brand new bass in my life! Here's a snappy video of demo-ing the bass in the shop, setting it up at home and my new backline rig arriving. (Alternative FB Video Link) Following the tricky job of trying to find a bricks & mortar store that had more than one Fender P in stock for me to play (everyone's backlogged), I went to Andertons in Guildford and after a bit of playing I knew I'd found the one for me which is an American Original 50s Precision with maple neck in two tone sunburst. They also had a second hand Aguilar DB115 cab that I specifically was hunting for so I had that delivered the following day! In the meantime, I had a larger EU company ship me the only Aguilar AG700 I could find in stock which was been kicking major derrière, especially at open air events. I knew I was after a classic-looking precision and definitely found something timeless. I had no doubts I'd love the Aguilar stuff seeing as I've previously owned (and loved) the DB751, AG500, the Tonehammer DI and done some recording with the DB659 in the past; didn't even demo the cab in the store! I can't speak highly enough of the folks at Andertons. They heard me out about the stock issue, absolutely zero snake oil tactics and they were really helpful with the logistics of my order which through its course involved deposits on three separate items, one being cancelled and then needing to merge two orders so I didn't exactly make it easy for them. Dead friendly in the shop as well!

  20. That was mine. It was all wrong, designed to be same size as my After Eighty (the modified Ashdown After Eight). It is far from ideal dimensions and neither Phil or I expected great things from it. Suffice to say we were pleasantly surprised. We will put the dimensions On the first some point. It was made with 18mm ply and could easily go down to 15or maybe 12mm?

  25. USA MusicMan Sterling 5 available. Amazing bass that I've owned from new, and purchased about 10 years ago. The neck has to be played to be believed, and the range of sounds is amazing (always gets positive comments in the studio). The HS pickup combo gives so many options, and being a 5 string is pretty unusual. The gold finish has mellowed over the years and looks mega cool, and the pickguard has also yellowed a little... It looks great! Standard brilliant MusicMan hardware all-round, and is completely standard. Serial Number Check brings up this info; Manufactured December 15th, 2008 Build Code 196-69-10-09-CS-CR Model Sterling 5 HS Color True Gold Neck Maple Neck Maple Fretboard Hardware Chrome Hardware It's in amazing condition, has only ever been transported in its original hard case, or a Mono bag. There are some nibbles on the headstock, and a ding on the rear of the top edge of the body (see pics). There don't seem to be many for sale (especially 5s), so the value is hard... Let me know if you're really keen but have an offer. Original hard case is included (but is missing a handle). I don't really want to ship - would prefer you to be able to have a look and check you are happy with the instrument. Happy for you to come to me to buy, or would drive for a meet if necessary (happy to go up as far as Bristol, or any of Devon/Cornwall/Somerset to meet). If you are interested or want more info, please get in touch.

  26. Hi folks, Yes the battery combo is mine, and it was a feedback howl that took out a fuse. I sized the original fuse for the size of wires I used, so it did its job, but I need to rethink the internal wiring - anyone know a source of cheap welding cable... Mrs Mottlefeeder and I made a weekend of our visit, and only got home a couple of hours ago, so somewhat belatedly, may I now add my thanks to the organisers and helpers. David

  27. Limited edition Source Audio Ultrawave for sale - this is 20/100 of the pre release special order batch with bespoke graphics and a powder coat finish, probably only one or two of these in the country. Able to load both the bass and guitar presets as all are (the only difference between the standard 'bass' and 'guitar' versions is the colour of the font!) These things are insane - it's a multiband processor that allows you to split your signal into 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, or 10 frequency bands, and then apply any of the band splitting options to a load of overdrive types, including Tube, Diode, Foldback Octave Up, Negative Flip Diode, and more. It's basically a dirt/fuzz/synth pedal on steroids and with the Neuro app and all of the community presets you can do as much or as little knob tweaking and pc editing as you like. If the idea of programming your own patches fills you with dread there'll undoubtedly be a community preset to simply download that will do just what you want, but if you love having minute control over every aspect of your sound, boy are you in for a treat. Oh and it also has a studio quality dual-channel compressor/expander built in with virtually unlimited options for tweaking via the Neuro app. There are tons of videos on it, but there's a great Nate Navarro one here Never gigged so in immaculate condition with the box and all the goodies. £190 delivered within the UK.

  33. Another great SW Bass Bash! Wonderful way to spend a sunday. Highlights for me were @fiatcoupe432's fretless Pedulla (what a bass) & the silver grey thing with the piccolo strings (mad), @sprocketflup's NS upright & his SEI fretless, @stewblack's short scale Reverend Dubking(?), @stevie's new LFSys cabs (look utterly superb, top professional build quality & a sound to match), @yorks5stringer's Nordstrand Acinonyx (what an array of sounds from the one bass), @Woodinblack's Shuker (thing of beauty), @Phil Starr's 6" cab build (ridiculously amazing sound from the tiniest of boxes), @Jabba_the_gut's super micro builds (very short 5er with side leds was ace), the always scrumptious scran & catching up with all you guys & gals again. Well done to Scrumpy Mike, Mrs Scrumpy & the Scrumpalettes catering team, Graham on the door & raffle, for organising it all & thanks to all the basschatters who came from near & far (getting further every year). Brilliant.

I'm hoping to attend but due to circumstances won't be able to bring anything significant but will have my Rafferty HPF for others to try if they'd like. I'll also bring my solid body Kala Sub UBass for those who may like to try one.

  41. Just back home after doing over 650km in the last 36h ... why!?!? To attend the Big Fat South West Bass Bash. It was my very first bass bash, in fact it was (As far as I am aware) the first time I'd been in close proximity to more than a couple of musicians who play bass ever! And every millimetre of the drive was more than worth it! Are you tired S'manth: Totally Exhausted! Was it worth the epic journey: Without a shadow of a doubt! It was delightful to meet so many folks I've only "known" here on BC and in person they are just as lovely (Maybe even 117% more lovely)! Such a a vast array of instruments, cabs, amps, and other goodies ... the GAS was strong but I was able to resist (Well mostly lol). I cannot rain down adequate superlatives on all that went on (Post drive brain drain) but ... if you can go next time S'manth xxx

  42. I got "Richer" because I was always careful with the little money I earned. Never owned a new car, very few foreign holidays. At one point out mortgage interest rate hit 16%. Paid off the mortgage 7 years ago, and since then interest on my hard earned savings is laughable. Don't tell me we had it easy, or are now reaping the rewards. Swings and roundabouts.

  44. Having been gigging with a Markbass CMD 12H combo for a while and really enjoying it;s super light weight and big sound, I decided to drag out from under the stairs the old Ampeg SVT-CL and 410 HLF that had been sulking away since before covid. To be honest I wasn't actually expecting that much of a difference as I DI into the PA as well. I nervously fired it up (I'll not lie, I'm a little terrified of it) and apart from a bit of crackle on the master pot (made me stinky poo myself), all was good. Took it to the venue (made sure it was an easy load in) and set it up. WOW WOW WOW Unbelievable tone, huge Hef...(I'll not utter that word on here) and big creamy fat that I had forgotten all about. Zeps Heartbreaker sounded the best I've ever heard me play it. Even the guitarist and singer commented on how fab it sounded. I'd love to use it on all the gigs but it's just too heavy, so maybe it'll get an airing 2 or 3 times a year but by God what a sound, absolute beast. maybe there is some truth in the difference with valves? Don't want to necessarily spark that old debate but if you ever get the chance to gig with something like this, really, give it a go.

  45. Dep holiday-park gig with function band last night in Bournemouth. Made a weekend of it and stayed over with my nephew who lives here. I was sent the set list a while ago (1 x 60mins) and wrote out some notes, & lyric cribs for my lead vocal songs. Got to the venue, set up, sound checked, and then found out that the venue were expecting 2 x 45s... booking agent còck-up somewhere along the line. Cue a frantic scramble through their repertoire, trying to find another half hour of tunes I and the other dep knew or could busk... Anyway, it worked out ok in the end. The punters loved it, the management were well pleased, and our busked half hour was decent enough that no-one noticed. I've played with them before but never with this particular guitarist, he was getting a lovely sound from his battered old Strat and tiny valve combo... turns out he was Muddy Manninen from Wishbone Ash.
