  1. Not so much a gig, but my first formal audition ever! I've been playing for 30+years but always in bands that I've either formed or joined as a mate of someone already in there - a kind of "yeah, he's ok" free pass. When I've depped, it's been through word of mouth. Last year I had an informal audition for a band I now play with but that was very much a friendly chat and a once through of a couple of songs. Last night I tried out for an established band getting back together after lockdown having lost their rhythm section to Covid. I was one of two bassists and two drummers, each pair with an hour to prove themselves. I've posted elsewhere that playing live doesn't make me particularly nervous, but last night the nerves made themselves known. Add to that not being able to find the rehearsal room (it was hidden inside a large warehouse) and having to ring one of the band for directions. But as with most things, it was fine once I'd set up and played the first song. The opposition and the other drummer didn't turn up so we had a two hour jam session (I'd learnt most of their set rather than just the five they said they try with me) and it felt good. And this morning, I got the nod that I'd made the grade. 😃

  2. If this were a Fender of the same era and condition it would be five times the asking. It isn’t of course but arguably the quality is better and the weight certainly healthier at 4kgs. It’s a Japanese built Yamaha Super Bass available only on the domestic market at the time and made between 1976 - 1982 (I think though there is conflicting information out there). It is near immaculate and comes with original case. All hardware is original although I suspect the screws of the scratchplate may have been replaced. The bass has had a pro set up and is currently strung with Roto flats. It plays very well and you can get both P and Jazz tones from the pickups. The finish is slightly redder than the mocha or walnut Fender finishes but it’s very nice and you can see the body grain. Construction is superb. I doubt you will find a cleaner example. It is a recent purchase however I have finally had my house purchase completed and need to pay off my solicitor so selling a lot of things before I bond with them. No trades. UK only pickup preferred but I can post at buyer's cost.

  3. Alte Hackerei in Karlsruhe last night. Another small and sweaty one. Excellent catering, they cooked burgers or wurst to order for both bands and all the crew. Free beer all night. Awesome sound and I played the best I have so far

  4. Can't we have one thread, just ONE fvcking thread, that doesn't get bogged with snide remarks? Life is sht enough as it is without coming here and having to read aren't-I-clever comments from alleged adults. Pack it up. If you've nothing nice to say, stfu.

  5. Spector Rebop 4 String - £675 Shipped Mainland UK. In an attractive colour which I believe is plum. Good overall condition given the age - minor mark on the body of the bass, minor dent around the top of the 5th fret, also extra screw holes for tuners on the back of the headstock where I think someone has had the tuners oreientated in a slanted Warwick position (eek!!) This is an early model, fretboard dots not crowns and an aguilar OBP preamp (rather than a tonepump) mated to the EMG pickups. Currently wearing flats but happy to swap to a set of rounds should a buyer prefer.

  10. This bass is a beast! The GZR pickups really bring it to life. Has a nice slim neck that I find really comfortable to play (42mm nut, but fairly thin). Weighs 4.3kg (9.47lbs) but balances really well and doesn't feel heavy at all. Collection from High Wycombe preferred, and I'm happy to drive within reason to meet up. But I can also post at buyer's cost. Here's what ESP say about the LTD Surveyor '87: While ESP first got started in 1975 as a small repair shop in Tokyo, it was really toward the mid ‘80s when our guitars and basses grabbed the attention of players around the world. The LTD ’87 Series are faithful recreations of this set of instruments from ESP’s 1987 catalog. With the LTD Surveryor ’87, the coveted ESP Surveyor shape is making a well-deserved return to the spotlight. A classic bolt-on design at 34” scale, the Surveyor ’87 has an alder body with maple neck and Macassar ebony fingerboard. It also features top-tier components including a Gotoh 201-B4 bridge and a Seymour Duncan Vintage P/ Vintage Jazz pickup set. 12. Here's mine. Had some issues with equipment but I'm off on holiday tomorrow so this is it. A devilishly diabolical ditty with angular guitar, stuttering yet throbbing bass, minimalist insistent drums and a vocal style somewhere between a Fisher Price Elvis Presley and a poor man's Johnny Cash. Low tech gear check - unbranded 5 string guitar in open G tuning for rhythm, Epiphone Gibson Special for jerky guitar sounds and solo, el cheapo Spider bass, Hydrogen open source drum machine, Roland cube amp, Apogee mic+ and recorded with Wavepad and Audacity.

  13. Not sure how many of you would be into a Acoustic guitar like this, but seeing as funds will be going towards a Bass, I though I'd try. Got this in a trade after being after one for years.... Long and short of it, I've decided to keep my other acoustic and I don't need or want more than one These are fantastic little instruments. 12 fret join, small size and shorter scale, lovely warm midrange to it. Feels like an old guitar, but with none of the vintage worries. There's a load of small marks from use all over the guitar. I've pictured everything as best I can. But there's nothing of any concern and no cracks or major dings. If you want a new one, look away, but to be honest, everything feels right and can see it ageing really nicely already. Hard case included. Will chuck a couple of sets of strings in that I was going to try. It had a professionally fitted pickup - so the end block has been reamed for a jack. I have a No Jack end pin to fit this coming at the weekend, or the pickup (DiMarzio The Black Angel Soundhole) could be included for an additional cost. I dont like pickups in acoustics so removed it as it added weight to a super light little guitar. Only trades would be a custom shop (or other brands in that price area) P Bass - Music Man Stingray Special (ideally natural with rosewood). With me adding to the deal where needed. I do have packaging to get this ready for collection for you. I could possibly post via UPS at cost as well... need any more pics, please look at the link below - I can take any extra images no problem. 14. Brilliant basses, supremely made, great customer services Just know what you want. Active vs passive If active - which pre-amp, standard 2 band or 3 band or a different one (Darkglass) Passive - which pick ups they off, Delano, sandberg, sandberg black label, Haüssel’s Which neck - for example the MarloweDK is a different neck profile once you got it sorted - bass for life

  18. The allure of the Quad Cortex is that you can make profiles of your own amps and dirt pedals, much like the Kemper Profiling Amp. These also have a broad community that shares the captures of their amps/dirt pedals, which adds to the appeal. This is all-for-naught if these digital profiles don't sound authentic...but evidently they sound very good when profiles are captured properly. Tens if thousands of dollars worth of your valuable gear stays at home while a single device allows you to virtually bring them to your gig at a fraction of the cost, size, weight, etc. If you haven't done so yet, I'd suggest you spend some time looking at the Fractal Audio AxeFxIII (rack) and FM9 (pedal) to see what they currently offer. Throw in the Line 6 Helix as well. These represent the state of the art for effects, amp and cab modeling. These are expensive products, but very widely used these days. I like the idea of an dream multi-fx rig that can run plug-ins, and dabbled with this many years ago with a laptop running Guitar Rig 3 with its companion control pedal audio I/O. Unfortunately, I couldn't get latency down to a manageable number, so I scrapped the idea. I'm sure this is less of an issue due to modern cpu processing speeds, but in the end, overall round-trip latency has to be +/-4msec in order for it to compete with hardware multi-fx.

  19. Wednesday night, depping in to co-host a jam night at a bar...I've played there before, both with the full band and I've turned up to the jam night to play a few, but this was the first time co-hosting and getting paid for it for a loooong time (the price of being in a busy steady band for more than a decade) - I'd forgotten how much fun busking can be, luckily the main drummer was great (a couple of others not as good, but we muddled through), so playing songs I've never played before (probably eight or ten), or even heard before (three of them) was a good workout...

  21. Wakefield's hardly the big city and I walked across it with a bass on my back in the early hours for 25 years. The last few of those with increasingly less confidence , and if you saw what Wakefield's become , you would too. That's why I moved to the sticks. Anyway - point is I think everywhere urban is getting increasingly less safe so I'd be very wary , possibly because age has made me less able to deck scrotes. One bit of fun. I had to go to Wakefield's CCTV offices once for work. Bloke sat there and looked me up and down then said ' Saturday nights , get out of a silver 4x4 on Peterson road , walk through the underpass with a guitar on your back , finish a bottle of brown ale at the top of the steps and drop the bottle in the bin end of George street ' Spot on. Even the brand of beer !

  25. After a bit of a change of heart - I've decided to keep this precision body and just swap out the neck. Ignore price above - I'm looking for around £1650 including tuners I'd consider trades for jazz bass necks - preferably rosewood with blocks and binding but open to other options. Must be 7.25" radius and preferably 70s U shape type. Open to offers and would also consider a sale with or without the tuners. Detailed photos at the bottom of this post. - This is a rarer ‘B Profile’ neck stamped October 1968. - In good condition for its age. - Truss rod is a little stiff but works. Beautiful nitro checking on the headstock. Lovely dark rosewood fretboard, there are a couple of dents in the top side (see pic) but none effect playability. - The tuners are original ‘Fender’ stamped. - Non-original brass nut. - Hootenanny button on back of headstock. If I’ve missed anything give me a shout. I want the buyer to be happy so would much prefer you to inspect in person (in Chessington, Surrey or central London) before buying but also happy to ship. Thanks Dan

  26. Great condition with cover. Price doesn't include delivery but happy to meet-up with buyer anywhere within an hour's drive from Taunton (I'm 10 min's away from J25 M5). Used as one of a pair with an HPF-equipped 800W amp running clean, so never driven too hard. Nice and fresh-looking. Pic's to follow but there's really nothing to show except what you'd want to see 🙂

  30. Ideal project for someone to get into, bought from Alan Knight. this needs some work ie rewire and a good set up. It has an old serial numbered neck plate on it relating to the 60’s purely for authenticity. partial road worn white sparkle body and rosewood board. Fendet decal fitted prior to my purchase some years back. Collection ideally. any question pm me. Based around DA17 area.

  36. Hey gang....! Let it be known that I'm in the market for Limelights, irremediably back to what I know and like after a long hiatus of no gear. So sorry to hijack the thread, but if any is interested in letting go of their Limelight (jazz, precision or even better, P with Jazz neck) please let me know. Apologies again! Ander.

  37. My main rig is 2 x Barefaced SCs with Mesa Subway D 800 or Fender Rumble HD 800. (So pretty much a BF Fanboi) The sample music used for the shoot out was not pure bass guitar tones. IMHO, to my 70 year old , tinnitus inflicted ears both the LFSys cabs appeared to sound fuller, richer and clearer than the Barefaced. I did prefer the bigger bottom end from the lower powered (350w? 12Pr 320?) LFSys cab, it just seemed to suit my particular tone needs.

  38. I'm not defending them. Mighty Mite necks carry the same advisory, as do AllParts , WD Music and Hosco; it's a standard industry clause. In all honesty the chances of you having to do a fret level are pretty slim, machines work to pretty tight tolerances.

  40. Rustins grain filler (needed as the Korina wood has a lot of big open pores), then sanding: Filler/primer (Jenolite), a whole can done in a few layers. It seems a downside of light wood like Korina is that it can be a bit of a sponge for paint. Matte Black base coat, a whole can (and some glitter creeping on) Clear coat with glitter sprinked onto it while it is wet (purple, and a bit of blue and silver) It is much more sparkly looking than the photo shows - all that purple and blue colour is from glitter. It'll now need lots of layers of clear coat to fully encase the glitter to then be sanded and polished to a smooth surface. Unfortunately, the clear coat I have seems to dull the effect of the glitter (it says it is transparent gloss, but it is uv resistant - possibly that's not a good thing if you want as much light as possible going through to the glitter and bouncing back out?). Any recommendations for clear coat that is very transparent and glossy to let the glitter shine? some laquer sprays have a selling point of giving a vintage aged/tarnished look, I need the opposite of that. Edit: With clear coat and sanding it has lost the 3D and sparkly impact. From a distance under normal room lighting looks like a blotchy dark purple/blue bruise! I'm thinking I might eventually go back to the original plan of a shoddy/roadworn white, I'm not looking forward to removing the glitter though!

  42. No, it's for good reason ; covers their derrières. Fender necks, like everyone else's, are primarily a machine product. Shaped/sanded, slots cut, frets stamped in etc. All geared to work within Fender's set up guidelines and tolerances. If there's a slightly high fret then likely it'll pass this stage unnoticed. With 350 units going out in a 10 hr shift time is of the essence. It's a controlled environment with FMIC setting the controls 😀 They have no control outside the factory. While most folk stick roughly with the guidelines, many don't and uneven/high frets come to light. Instead of entering into a RIC-style "you didn't follow the rules/your warranty is void", FMIC just add 'fret work' to the list of advisories.
