  1. Really cool gig at Lutteral Hall in West Bridgeford, Nottingham, with the Elton John tribute. Place was sold out as far as I could see, and people were up dancing from pretty early on, which is always a good sign. Given me a warm glow for the weekend.

  2. With my decision to move away from bass and get back to guitar, I got myself one of these. I adore the look of a Gretsch but don’t get on with the larger bodies, so this was my compromise. Historic Series G3140

  3. Light weight and very resonant 2006 model, weighs 8.75lb / 3.97kg. Also comes with a WD matt black pickguard (plastic. simulated black anodized) in addition to the original gold anodized. Sounds and plays great, punches well above its price point - not surprised as there’s much love for those out there. But my one in one out policy dictated by cash flow leads me to sell this. Frets are in great shape, neck is spot on, and all working and set up well. (Please note the rounds were put on for the photos and I had not yet spaced them on the vintage saddles yet, so the spacing may look odd!). Has a paint chip in the body, under the side where your right arm might go (pictured). Also has a couple of little knocks on the neck behind the 1st fret - it’s not where my thumb goes when playing up there so I’ve never felt it, does anyones thumb go that high up?! (also pictured). The neck is naturally nice and smooth for a gloss one (tons of use over the years), it’s balanced great and feels lovely and lively to play. Wearing a brand new set of nickel rounds - sounded amazing with the flats I had on when I was using it. Collection only from Harrow HA1 please.

  4. Tonight sees the end of our annual residency at Tulley’s Shocktoberfest. 25 shows in 35 days, 3 sets per night so something like 56 hours total playing time. Despite the tiredness I have lost half a stone and feel much fitter so it’s all good stuff. It’s been a pleasure and honour to share the stage with my core band friends from The Audacity plus the rotating cast of very talented backing vocalists and brass players we’ve had joining us each night. Will miss the gigs and the backstage giggles a lot but looking forward to getting my evenings back for a while.

  6. I bought this from BassBros a couple of months ago and upgraded the white pickguard to a black one for added coolness. The lightest Jazz I have ever played at 8 pounds, yes you read that correctly. Unfortunately I am not getting on with the neck profile (I previously had a super-thin necked Geddy Jazz and this is quite deep front to back, almost like a chunky P bass neck but with narrower nut width). It hasn't left the house since I got it and is in super 9.5/10 condition (a few tiny, barely visible scratches around the drilled bridge cover holes). Comes with Fender case, covers, white guard etc. Collect from SW13 London or post at cost within UK. NO TRADES unless a 2010s Spector Ian Hill P/J in black (the one with the slimmed down neck profile). Last pic was taken today, to show black guard, the rest were sent to me by Will from BassBros (it didn't actually go on their website as I heard about it before Will had put together the advert).

  7. The old cold store in Nottingham last night. So nice to be playing my own drums again after a 10 date tour using small sizes on a shared kit We played 1.5 hours which is very tiring, but an enthusiastic crowd provided the adrenaline to get me through

  10. Earlier today I took delivery of this beauty! It's the second P bass I've owned. The first I never got along with and sold, but from a few hours playing this afternoon I'm really enjoying this. I took a risk ordering online without trying in a shop but I was keen to give P basses another shot. It's a comfortable weight (can't tell you exactly how much), balances well on the knee and strap, and the neck dimensions feel nice in the hand. The neck finish is glossy, which is quite different of course to the satin finish I've been playing, but feels nice to get around and not sticky at all. I've only played unplugged and through headphones so far, so a rehearsal next week will be the real test. So far so good though, it sounds good and the tone knob offers a decent range. It came pretty much set up and ready straight out of the box which was nice. Just a minor truss rod tweak needed, but otherwise the intonation is spot on and the saddle heights work for me. Pictures of course! There's some rather nice grain on the fretboard, and I'm a big fan of the black and gold with blocks look. Edd

  11. Well, last night and the last few weeks combined. I've just done 7 dates with the Mighty Wah - something of a thrill as Pete Wylie has long been one of my favourite songwriters. The mini tour was not without its challenges (even as the baby of the band, 6am arrivals back at home are too much for me now) but it was a fantastic experience and it looks like we're already plotting some futher gigs. Last night was a my own band Dead Tenant playing to an unexpectedly large crowd in the fab little theatre just down the road from where we all live. We were a tiny bit rusty but I'm listening back to the recording as I type and it's all sounding much better than it felt in the moment. Apologies for multiple photos but you don't get to play with your heroes every day 🙂 B&W ones are from last night.

  12. Hi Sandberg lovers, I've been using Sandberg 5 strings for many years. I ended up ordering a custom bass from them. It's a TT5 passive base with a paulownia body. There are some details like the luminiscent sidedots or the ramp. I received it 6 months ago and I only play it now. I kept my VM2-5 25th Anniversary as a spare wich seemed light to me at the time but wich weighs as a truck today compared to the 2,7kg of my custom one ! I'm definitevely a Sandberg addict !!

I have for sale my 1972 fender precision in 3 tone sunburst The bass when I got it was resprayed in red and the pickups, scratchplate were changed out The tone pot was replaced at some point but the the rest of the loom looks all original with period stamped vol pot and works quite well Neck is date stamped April 72 Nut width is 40mm Weight 4.1 Kgs I had the body striped back to natural and resprayed back to 3 tone burst The bass was in good shape when i got it with no serious dents andf it in great sahope now its been sprayed Neck has a few minor dings to the back in some places but as I say they are minor tuners are pit free I managed to acquire a set of 1974 Precision pickups from the US along with a period repro scratchplate which has been yellowed on the edges to give it a 70's antique look and looks the part I had the tug bar and ahve misplaced it somewhere but i will try and find it before the week is out Currently strung with flats, I will also source a decent case for it Nice comfortable neck to play with the slim nut, frest are in pretty good condition with some wear at the top frets Any question please fire away and price is firm as that is what it owes me, the parts were not cheap as most of you will know

  14. That's very nice... However I never look at it as a move away or towards one instrument or another. I've played guitar, bass and synths in various bands at various times. In fact every time I ended up playing guitar or synth in a band it's because I originally joined or auditioned as a bass player. In the end it's all music.

  15. More pics in current livery (taken a few weeks ago when it was wearing flats, now has D'Addario 45-100 nickels on) and one of the digital scales. Also I forgot to say that I like low action and a flat neck relief (if that's the correct description). I have put a sliver of paper under the E string where it passes over the nut to avoid slight buzz around the 8th fret. This wouldn't be an issue if you liked medium action, flats or a different relief profile (it didn't buzz, for example, when it came to me from BassBros, its just the vagaries of my setup)

  16. I love the look of it. If I had the spare cash I'd buy it exactly as it is. I like that you can see the age and see its worked hard and most importantly, it's real wear and age rather than a new one attacked with sandpaper.

  17. **£580** My aging hands and wrists are favouring Jazz Bass necks so it is time to move this absolute beauty on. The best Precision I have ever played without a doubt, and I say this after owning many MIM and MIA Precisions in recent years. Super solid and reasonably light (7.9 lbs) with the classic Precision Bass tone and vintage specs. Made in Mexico but head and shoulders above the ‘Player’ type MIM basses. Has a serial number beginning MX16 with the Fender site coming back with March 2017 as the year of production. · Alder body with a late 50's "C' shape 1-Piece Maple neck. Gloss Urethane neck finish. · 1.75" (synthetic bone) nut width, 20 frets and black dots. · 7.25" fretboard radius · 4-Saddle American Vintage Bass bridge · American Vintage Reverse Open-Gear Bass reverse tuners · Vintage-Style Split Single-Coil pickup. · 1-Ply Gold Anodized Aluminium pickguard · Weight – 7.9lbs These Classic Series basses are what are nowadays called Vintera range I believe. The pickguard is scratched near the truss rod access and there are a couple of small dents in the body. Nothing serious enough to see the wood! I have tried to photograph these, one near the jack output and one on the edge of the body near the tone knob. £675 - although ideally I would like a trade for one of the Vintera or Classic series MIM Jazz basses.   18. 1973/4 second version US made Fender Telecaster Bass. The version with the single humbucker, bullet trussrod and three bolt micro-tilt neck. This bass is definitely not a case Queen! It’s been modified and refinished in black by the previous owner. The neck, tuners, body, neck plate, strap buttons are all original. The slab body has been routed for an extra P bass pickup. The Mudbucker is a Fender reissue as the originals are very hard to source. The Seymour Duncan quarter pounder sounds really punchy and is hot enough to match the big humbucker and the bass sustains forever. The scratchplate is none original and none standard it has had a repair as it is quite brittle plastic and looks quite old. I had it wired to the Seymour Duncan Pickup only whilst I sourced a replacement Humbucker and will include a black scratchplate as pictured so you can choose if you want to use it without the humbucker. You can see where the original through body stringing holes would have been on the rear of the bass however it has been filled and fitted with a 70’s Fender BBOT bridge with one odd saddle fitted by myself as the bridge supplied was in pieces and a saddle missing. The original rout for the side jack cup has also been filled before the refinish. It could be possible to convert back to the original if wanted I would think. As I wanted a project I took a risk and bought this as a partly rebuilt Tele bass body and neck with some parts - the owner had inherited it and knew that it was good quality instrument but in a bad state. The body had already been refinished and the neck definitely needed a refret which I got my luthier to do (not cheap) having found that the neck was straight and the bullet trussrod worked perfectly. The original frets were literally hanging out and it looked like a butcher had been at the board when I bought it. It weighs a very reasonable 4.7kgs for a big slab of wood (ash?) and plays and sounds great. Without the humbucker it weighs 4.3kgs! I have two Tele basses and as I need to release some funds one has to go. It’s a rare bass and I’m sure the mods could be reversed if required The humbucker has a lot more variation than you would expect and you can get some very beefy and varied sounds. As expected the SD has that great P bass grunt we all know and love. Two pots and the capacitor appear to be original or at least contemporary. I added a volume pot and replaced some of the wiring. The jack socket is also an old replacement and works okay but will benefit from an upgrade at some point (I didn’t have any spares). No trades unless you have a Musicman Sterling bass with a maple board to p ex. Nothing else sorry. UK only. No case I’m afraid. Pickup preferred but could look into posting at buyer’s cost. Any questions please ask. Price reflects the modifications and none original parts. I’ve added pictures supplied by the original seller showing the body routs, neck pocket and neck. You can also see where the original string ferrules were on the back of the body so drilling them out should be a pretty straightforward job.

  21. I agree with the other comments. Keep it in one piece and clean it up. It would be a shame to break it up. Is it still in a playable condition? It does appear to have a couple of issues though, like the missing 20th fret, not that would matter to most people from a playing perspective. Is the gaffer tape there because the pickup cover mounting lug is damaged or is it just a missing screw? The biggest question is what is the truss rod like, is it still functional? If not, then that would be an issue whether it was parted out or not.

  22. I am not, by any means, a Fender enthusiast. However, this seems to me like an instrument rather than a collection of parts and it would be a shame to split it up. I hope it finishes up with someone who will just clean it up, get rid of the gaffa tape (and do anything that needs to be done in order to do so) and play it like it is. The body is nice, an early one before Fender started just routing out a channel to the pickup and relying on the pickguard to cover it all up.

  24. Your brother is very generous. A, Possibly far more generous than he knows? Or B, Generous and so wealthy that he doesn't mind giving away multi thousand pound basses? Or perhaps C, generous and didn't consider the possibility of you selling it even though he has no further use for it himself. You should probably get clear on all that before flogging it off.

  25. I'd say sadly no there's no magic formula. Bunch of SE lads got together a few years back and for a bit of fun did a double blind P-bass shoot-out, results saw an Encore and a Gear 4 Music model preferred over both a 57 and a 66 Fender. Pickups are simple things, most reports of cheap crap pickups are from folk who never bothered to adjust the heights 😃 Going with a brand is often an exercise in name dropping, you'll see plenty of "I swapped the pickups for 'X' and it sounds great" ; rarely will you hear what was wrong with the stock pickups or what steps were taken to try and improve performance before chucking them. I'm afraid finding the right bass is really just down to playing them. A wee tip you might find helpful, try and recreate a familiar situation. I would often play through a portable headphone amp, I'd also use the headphone amp when trying basses in shops.

  26. Update of the neck And I decided to matte out th ebass. The see through finish showed too much of the black grounding in my opinion. And to be honest the "frosted" matte look, looks classier and less as a gimmick. Hope you all like the progress.

  28. I experience something similar. I learn a song, and eventually reach peak incompetence - no matter how much more I play, I don't get any better. I then come back to it the next day and I can play it better. Perhaps my brain is processing the learning overnight, and when I next play it, has worked it out.

  31. The big blue one. I’ve been considering a few other of their pedals too. I’m interested in the Subversive Propaganda and a couple of their drive pedals. Both units are well made and sound great. They take up a lot of real estate and have side jacks but I mainly use them on a desk too so cramming them into a pedal board matters less to me.

  32. I picked up the FTelettronica PLL and Envelope Follower a couple of weeks ago and have been impressed by both. I was fiddling around with the Envelope Follower yesterday evening and it’s very flexible and very wet (as opposed to croaky) sounding. I’ve not played a Meatball though so can’t say how close they are. I’m planning to spend more time on it over the next couple of days and maybe try it with a different bass; I tried it with a passive bass and had to keep sensitivity at max and dig in to get it to trigger as much as I wanted but when it was dialled in it sounded great. FTelettronica were great to order through and the pedal arrived in less than a week.

  35. @Baloney Balderdash that's quite a reply, isn't it? let's recap and see what I (have not?) understood I never expressed an interest in going "amp-less" (with amp here I mean the amplifier circuit), so I was clarifying that. what is "this" that I'd need to work? and why would I need anything that simulates amp and cab. actually since my initial post I'm saying that I'm after a "neutral" amp (amplifier circuit), so I shouldn't have to simulate anything there at all. I do have a studio, so professional mixer, headphones, studio monitors, etc. this is not the problem, and that's why I believe my initial post might have been misunderstood and hence why I replied to you before trying to clarify what I meant. then, about your last kind reply: again, what is "that"? I don't think I ever mentioned a "regular" amp anywhere. but also, could you define what "regular" means? I never said I want, this whole post is started with me expressing an interest in not doing that. honestly, I'd invite you to be a bit more polite and less "hostile". I did read what you wrote, and am also sure I understood what you wrote. but even if I didn't, please just be polite. no need to be rude or aggressive, seriously. the beautiful thing about this forum is that people can freely talk and share experiences and knowledge. so, if there is something I don't know or understand, help me understanding it, teach me, but don't write things like this, because it's just counterproductive. couple of things about the cabinet. that has never been at the centre of the conversation, I mentioned it because I do wanna use one, and yes a full range (just for the records). but I wasn't thinking I want to mic that up, atm at least. anyway, the cab thing is one for another time.

  38. When I put cloverleaf tuners on my Variax I used a cheapy Lidl step cutter bit to take the hole up to 18mm on both sides, then ran an 18mm bit through the centre part. The 2 or 3mm deep 18mm hole on either side from the step cutter acts as a guide going in and prevents break out coming out.

  39. If you possibly can, buy from the Basschat marketplace. I wouldn't buy from anywhere else, it's a bunch of experts buying and selling second hand gear from other experts, so things that might be overpriced don't move or are commented on. My buying and selling experience on here has been 100% positive as has dealing with excellent people who know their stuff.

  41. I see that there hasn't been a lot of activity on this thread lately so I thought I'd post a NBD here. I opened up another thread a few weeks ago about trying a Precision as I thought my BB424 could have been a little smoother, particularly when using the neck pickup. Then, at a rehearsal on Monday night, I was getting some really odd booming sounds when using the E string which I need to investigate further. So, as the Bass Gallery isn't too far from where I work, I dropped in to have a look at a BB1024 that they had advertised. Long story short, I came home with it. I already have a BB1025x but find that a little heavy for long rehearsal. So I had an idea of what this might sound like but I was really impressed nonetheless. The sound from this thing has weight and authority but also effortless smoothness. I do like my 424, honestly, but even after a half hour noodle at home, I'm already in love with the 1024. It just plays and sounds on another level. I did try the 2024 they had in, which was lovely, but the 1024 seems like the sweet spot for me. The shop set it up for me with Thomastik flats, and an incredibly low string height, but it still plays and sounds beautifully. Anyway, here's a quick picture.

  44. Just for lols, I timed putting the fretless neck on this evening. 12:02 minutes from playing fretted in tune to playing a tuned fretless out of tune.
