  1. Nice little gig in The Maldives. They flew us out here from the UK, put us up on full board in a swanky water villa for 3 days and then decided that they only wanted us to play for 1hr. Highlight was looking out across the dancefloor and seeing Peter Crouch and Jack Whitehall dancing together. Nice big sound system too. 20221231_150612.mp4 VID-20230101-WA0012.mp4

  2. So today I was asked to join a punk covers band on the skinny stringed instrument, lead guitar no less. I of course said yes, I’ve known the guys in the band for years, they only do something like 10 or 12 gigs a year and all local so nice & easy. Just gotta learn how to play lead guitar I suppose….

  3. We picked up a gig last minute as the pub had been let down by another band due to sickness, a bit of a slow start but eventually the punters were suitably lubricated enough to take to the dance floor, so all turned out well in the end. The pub rebooked us, we had an enquiry about a private party also and we were fed and watered, so all was good, although not quite The Maldives….I think mrtcat won the Internet with that gig😊🤘👍🏻

  4. Nice NYE gig in Minehead (England's answer to the Maldives 😎). The crowd were up for it and so were we. What could possibly go wrong? Well, we had to find a dep drummer at the last minute, but all went so well that we played til 1am and the venue paid us more than agreed. Not a bad start to the NY!

  6. Had a gig with the ABBA tribute last night and boy, that little Sadowsky is one of the cheapest basses I own but it's very quickly growing to be one of my favourites. What an amazing instrument.

  7. NYE pub gig. All good. Friendly drunk crowd, three sets including a couple of new songs, got paid, everyone happy. Used a biamped rig because, well why not? Bugera beast handled bottom and low mids via the TE cabs and the TC Electronic handled mids and tops. Split the effects from the Ampero. Sounded massive.

  8. Dep for me. Near home, and finished by 11:30. Now I just need to be paid as the pub uses one of the online payment systems ☹️ No rehearsal and some less well known songs from the 60’s onwards, so working with a selection of chord charts and iReal bits I’d found on my iPad on a stand with a Bluetooth page turner I’d had for a while but never used in anger. That plus keeping an ear out for what the guitarist was up to, as he went off piste at times and reading the nods for endings, but got through relatively unscathed. First night out with the Darkglass Microtubes 500 I won in an auction recently (with my trusty Streamliner in case there were any problems). Sounded good and no problems, which was nice. Now I just need to understand how the Intelligent footswitch works

  9. Proper punk rock night for us at the Star and Garter in Manchester, with Vomit and Ed Banger. Great crowd, we played well and at least 20bpm faster than normal. And someone actually recognised my Parker bass! However, city centre a bit of a nightmare due to huge club just over the way which caused the road to be completely covered in barely clad teenagers - bit of a contrast to the punters at the Star!

  10. Hi everyone. I have decided to sell this beautiful modern jazz bass , hand made in Japan , Aguilar pickups , Ash body , Maple neck and Ebony fretboard. Light weight (just under 4kg) and superb playability. I have 4 other basses so I am going to let this one go in a trade , actually try me with anything like pedals , basses , amps etc. I want to try something new.

  11. Squier Jazz Bass. 1990/91 Made in Japan. Aged white body with a rosewood board and tort guard. Pickups have been replaced with Toneriders and it's a nice, punchy sounding bass. I had it setup by BJ in Leeds when I bought it and the action is more or less to fender spec, maybe a touch lower. Overall condition is good but there is some damage to the lower edge of the body and a couple of small nicks in the back of the neck up near the 12 fret (so you'll be going to nowhere near them, obviously)

  12. Great night last night on our band's home turf. Sold out night and people dancing right up to the stage. Fewer ropey moments than usual (mental note: after practising for weeks solely on a J-style bass, a warm-up is advisable before launching straight into using a P-bass for a gig...) and we went down a storm. Home by 11 for pizza pockets and ranch dip with Mrs Greg! Had to use my Barefaced Two10S vertically for space reasons and I think it sounded slightly better to my ears, as well as being jeans-flappingly loud!

  16. New Years Eve at the Dog House bar, Alfreton. A heavy-drinking but affable crowd ready to party. We piled on the cheese and there was plenty of dancing and singing along to Sweet Caroline, Hi Ho Silver Lining etc. We arrived at 7 for setup and asked for a side door near the stage area to be opened. The landlady was already so drunk she could barely find the right key on her key ring. Amazingly, she was still upright at New Year to count out the cash correctly. After two goes 😜. Dropped the gear off at home, and walked around to the local at 1.30 for a couple of relaxers. 🍻 Happy New Year everyone.

  17. Here is a super-cool 2018 Fender Meteora guitar. This is one of the originals from 2018, and only 700 were made. You can tell the difference as this one has the body through stringing. It’s in excellent condition, and all works. Recently restrung. The humbuckers are loud and brash, but it can also be a delicate guitar with some lovely jangly sounds. It has some marks which you’d expect on a gigging guitar. The looks will split opinions, but I love it! Selling to fund a new Jaguar. Can post if you need me to, I'll just need a few days to secure a box for it. It doesn't come with a case. Looking for £550

  18. Those who frequent the Build Diaries section will be familiar with the builds and mods I've done for fellow band members, fellow Basschat members and, as with this one, for myself. Yes, it's a self-built - but bass-wise, I have been pleased to have been awarded the 'No Treble' Bass of the Week five times over the past few years. Some of the instruments I have built over the years can be seen on my website www.ajrguitarmods.co.uk And those who have been to some of the more recent Bassbashes may well have seen this very bass, the: "SWAPAAWTBBWADS" bass (Same Woods And Proportions As A Warwick Thumb Bass But, Wisely, A Different Shape). Spec is: 34" Scale through-neck 4-string Solid Bubinga body Mahogany/Wenge 3-part neck Black ebony fretboard Luminlay side markers (1/3/5/etc., at fret positions) Seymour Duncan SJB-2 pickups (passive) Seymour Duncan STC-2 2-band EQ Warwick bridge, stop-tail, tuners and Just-a-nut Mk3 Fitted with D'Addario Chromes Schaller strap buttons (others can be fitted on request) 8lbs 7oz playing weight Background is that I built a tribute Jack Bruce Thumb-ish for our band's bassist (which he still plays) but l ended up playing it myself that often that he suggested I build one of my own. Not wanting to head down a plagiarism route, I made one with the same key dimensions and timbers as the Thumb (although lighter than most I have played) but a different body and headstock shape. There is a build thread on the forum - it's missing some emojis from the various forum format changes but has pretty much all of my original build photos on it if anyone is interested: Why am I selling it? Well, the hand arthritis has got me to the stage where my bass and guitaring days are basically over. The bass sits in a gig bag in a cupboard which is not what basses are made for... Here are a few shots of it. Those with a black background are from when it was first made, those with standard room backgrounds were taken this morning. It is in 'as built' condition: ***Someone asked me to add a close up photo of the body now rather than when it was built. It's here: I'm open to offers - my main priority is getting this to someone who's going to play it. I won't use couriers but more than happy to meet halfway up to 100 mile radius from Derby.

  22. Tonewood discussions in my experience tend to be fruitless. Everyone has their own opinion, and now, I will add mine... I've now had a good while to play with both the Wal and the Wal-ish side by side. In my opinion, we are just about there, sonically. The neck has added a huge amount to the sound, more than I had initially appreciated. There are some preamp settings now where the two instruments are indistinguishable to my ear. However, it's not perfect. I'm going to say I think changing the body wood to mahogany will add the last 5-10% to the sound. It will also be the single biggest expense of the project, most likely. Typical 80/20 or 90/10 Pareto principle type stuff.... I think for others who wanted to build a Wal-ish, they could stop right here and call it good, as it would be 90% of the sound without the extra cost. I'm not going to do that, obviously, lol. Whilst I try and figure out the best way to record direct video comparisons, here's what open G looks like from the Wal-ish bass through Reaper into SPAN - all filters open and pickups even: And here's what open G looks like from the Wal bass through Reaper into SPAN - all filters open and pickups even: There is a bit more complexity going on with the Wal, still. But it is very close indeed on rough scope and listening.

Good condition with one small chip near the neck pocket and one by the jack. Spec sheet is shown in the picture but anything else just let me know. Includes the amazing fitted case and I have boxes so can box up for postage at buyers risk/cost or a collection/meet up preferred. Will consider any part ex if it helps a deal. Thanks

  27. Selling my 2013 PB MIA - as I have finally found the bass for my needs, a Guild Starfire- so I can’t justify having such a great bass as a back up - it’s just a superb PB and needs a home where it’s number 1. Possibly with get the Deacy power bass from Bass Centre as back up. This bass sings unplugged - it resonates and so easy to play- plugged in it growls! new GHS flats just out on very wide tone options for a P as they switched up the pups from 2013 - the neck has the super satin finish - rolled edge with rosewood board which has been oiled - trust rod at bottom but access through the black three ply scratch plate and is 42mm at bone nut Bridge has the adjustable slots with a 19.5 mm string spacing with string through or top load option tuners the lightweight fender ones - holds well. weight is approx 8lbs it’s a lightweight one it has a couple of fine scratches and a tiny chip on thr back of the horn pictured apart from that some very light buckle rash - it’s a beautiful 3 burst - looks like a bottle of bourbon. comes with Fender hard case UK shipping £45 insured or pickup/meet upto hour drive from Clitheroe Lancs

  28. Fender Precision Bass, Made in the USA, in 1978,two owners from new, I bought this 2 years ago the original owner only sold the guitar as he had arthritis and could no longer play. The body really shows it's history, the top coat has worn through with use over the years revealing the white undercoat which looks cool. The date on the neck reveals it’s manufactured in week 11 , 78 year day 3 and on the underside of the pick up it’s got a date of 20th August 1978. Weight is 9lbs 5.5 ozs, pick up cover is included, I removed it when I purchased the bass, fully working, plays really niceIMG_2261.HEIC and sounds awesome. Lots of dings but showing a beautiful patina, buy a genuine Road-worn guitar, not one of the false aged relic worn pretenders selling in music stores for 4 grand plus. New Fender hard case included.Genuine reason for sale, I’ll be very sad to see it go, any inspection welcome, try before you buy, can deliver locally. 29. Bought a pearl scratchplate from our very own @Alfie Noakes last Thu. Posted Fri and arrived Sat morning. Just fitted and i'm fair pleased with it. Had to make a few little adjustments to its fitting and one hole is half a hole out and not really worth filling in, drilling to make a new screw hole. Been wanting one of these for a while and it just popped up in For Sale. What do you think, before and after pics. Before After Close up

  30. Oh my ... the lengths required to achieve the length desired I've been chasing my tail recently to try to get a short scale 5 string ... something someone posted the other day got me thinking and I've done some playing and I am now strumming on a prototype 28 inch scale length 5 string fretless. How? I took A Harley Benton 5 string fretless (A gorgeous instrument donated to me to help recover from my post fire lack of groove) with flatwounds on it. A capo and a small length of wire (the wire is playing the role of a zero fret) Some masking tape, a ruler and a sharpie. And did this ... The fingerboard is unlined and the sidedots are now hidden by the masking tape markers so it is not confusing to locate positions. It is tuned BEADG and the low B (0.135) sounds pretty good, tho it does grumble a bit if I pluck it hard ... I think I need a slightly thicker wire and some adjustment to the saddle height ... but all in all it is pretty good and a very comfortable finger stretch for me. I'm now trying to figure out how to get a headless neck setup in this configuration. S'manth x

  31. Well chaps, seeing as I may be more than a bit of a black/black/maple Fender guy I’ve bought myself a Fender Tele Deluxe (twin humbuckers) in the afore mentioned colour scheme for this gig. Whilst I slightly prefer the sound of my Epi SG I’m well aware that I play Fender guitars better so makes sense, plus fits my preferred colouring too.

  33. The only bass I've bought new up to now was my Michael Kelly acoustic fretless 5 which was half price (£400 from memory) because it had been in the shop for a while and they wanted to get rid of it - and I wanted it. All the others have been second-hand £90 - £950. Apart from the 1966 Gibson EB2 ($2k) and the 1962 EB3 (not telling!) which are so much more than bass guitars, playing them is like an electric shock of plugging directly into history. The custom build 6-string fan-fret I've commissioned from Jim Fleeting (https://www.jimfleetingguitars.com/) he has capped at £5k, of which £2k is part-ex for two which did not cost me that much. I'm starting to feel a bit guilty about this, as the spec keeps going up (2,000 year old bog oak fretboard, my little dragon tattoo inlaid in mother-of-pearl on the back of the neck, ...) and his costs must be going up. It's going to be everything I could dream of in a bass, and I'll be closely involved in every detail of the design, materials, electronics, every stage of the build - so I'll be getting all that experience, that journey, and then the bass itself. Priceless for me, and I'm supporting a local independent craftsman of international standard. Btw this is paid for out of a small occupational pension, a less than full state pension, and an extremely frugal lifestyle wrt anything other than music.

  34. I bought this. My first ever brand new bass. I do like a FSO. But another FSO has made my head snap sideways. I am so tragically bass-fickle, but there are worse weaknesses. This is a US built L1000 with that all important, most important extra string. Just so that we are clear, I care nothing for you opinions that 4 are enough. It weighs 8lbs 8oz and just feels really nice. It does the single pickup FSO thing exceptinally well. It is Leo's last pickup design I do believe. He knew about pickups. If you are looking carefully you will see the red switch of craziness. I am not entirely sure technically what goes on when you hit this, but it is intense and brings joy. In an enhanced LF/Grunt stylee. I have not had it long enough to damage it so it is in virtually perfect nick. Absolute perfection? Nothing ever is. But I cannot find any blems and I am SUPER careful with my kit. Unless it is a relic and then I just do not care. There is a joy in that. But I have cared for this a lot. It also comes with a G&L hard case. I have not used a hard case in any meaningful way since 1989 so it is shiny. It is passive so is, you know, like, real. And yet, the red switch of craziness sends the front end of my preamp into hyperdrive. That with flats sends people into raptures of delight. The body is meant to be scaled up to get the 19mm (or .750" if you are that way inclined) spacing looking fabulous. The body is smaller that my Fender J5. And it is "sling it over you shoulder and play for 3 hours without worrying" light. 8lbs 8oz light. Did I mention that? The older I get, the more interesting those kind of figures look. I could be wrong (my family has suggested that sometimes I am) but I suspect there are very few, if any, others in the UK. I imported it from the US with all the Tax and "strach" (Welsh for hassle) (roll the "r" and gutteral the "ch") that entails. Let my fickleness bring you joy. Given our present government's expertise with leveraging exchange rates and everything else, bringing one of these in would be a cool 2K+. To continue discussing the present government, they are very keen to let the market decide. I bet they are not so keen now but I do not want my thread to be locked before I get anywhere so will not follow that line of thought. I bet they wish they had not either. Anyway, if the market decides I should keep this then I am entirely cool about that as it is proper lush, but I am trying to be rational about how many basses I own. I do not want to get sucked into that particular aesthetic discussion, but this is my favourite version of any of the G&L headstocks. I was going to try and get an off white/cream pickup cover 3D printed. 2002 Owen would be horrified. But hey ho, what did he know? It would look absolutley banging, but that ship has sailed. I am not looking for any trades, but thanks for thinking about it. Having written all that and considered the bass again, I do not really want to sell it. But basses are not Pokemon and I do not gotta catch them all. Ed makes all the sounds and notes happen here. I have embedded it to start when he starts playing. A decent pair of cans or speakers will let you hear what is going on.

  37. I pop on occasionally, but don't often have much to say . Nice to see you're still hanging around here 👍 A sheet of thin mdf works for me. Thick enough to run a guide bearing on, but thin enough to not spend weeks sanding it into shape. If you're going to freehand I'd avoid power tools, except maybe a jigsaw to rough it out. It's far too easy to remove too much material and/or fingers! Then use files, rasps and sanding sticks - and take your time

  39. I’ve had short scale basses before but I wanted to try a medium scale so I picked up this early Ibanez roadstar in a hideous torquise blue, stripped it best I could, finished with Tru Oil and added some gold hipshot ultralights to match the brass bridge. It’s really comfortable to play, the 32” scale is better then expected beautifully balanced & light, lovely compromise between 30”/34”. Just need to tidy up the wiring.

  43. Great minds @Andyjr1515….I have in my hands two types of Hipshot A bridges, one in aluminium, and one in brass. I planned for this experiment as well. Sonically, the ‘Wal-ish’ sounds like it has plenty of treble, more than the Wal, as the filter range extends higher. The scope doesn’t lie though, there is more complexity for the Wal in the low treble range.

  45. @scrumpymike That little Stingray is gorgeous! Is the pickup connected in parallel humbucker mode? I fitted the same preamp to my Mensinger Cazpar (with big MM like humbucker) but swapped the volume control out for one with a push-pull switch. This lets you switch between single coil or humbucker mode by routing the pickup wiring through the switch. It’s a cheap way of giving it a much wider range of tones, just a thought. The single coil gives a nice vintage tone compared to the more aggressive humbucker tone. I didn’t bother with series mode as it’s just a louder version of single coil and you get a massive volume change between modes. Here’s a pic of the wiring and controls.

  47. As a live sound guy and a bassist, I'd absolutely prefer that to be two lines. As others have said, both sources will have a different sonic character and need treating differently in the mix. As for DI boxes, my go-to recommendation is always Orchid Electronics. Small UK based company, hand assembled kit for a very, very good price. Old school website, you have to actually email to place an order, but you're dealing directly with the guy who's building the kit! http://orchid-electronics.co.uk

  48. No disrespect to @Andyjr1515's photography skills but photos do not do this bass justice. It is the bass that inspired me to commission both the Silk bass and the Psilos bass. I'd like to think that they, in turn, inspired others to have Andy build them instruments. Andy's abilities have become a thing of legend for good reason - we, his clients, have set him some serious challenges, he's exceeded my expectations on all four of the projects I've set him. Needless to say, whoever buys this will be more than happy with it. If not, I'm sure that Andy can make whatever mods they desire. GLWTS.

  50. You have made a great start. You are right about the difficulty of building this way, @stevie did produce a 'flatpack' kit for the first 10 or 20 people to build theirs and that's what all the pics show. All the parts were CNC routed. All the other BC designs have cabs I've deliberately designed to be 'easy build' in that they need no clamping or specialist tools other than a Jig saw. I always use a reinforced butt joint screwed and glued inside the cab, which is stronger and needs no clamping so is easier for people without woodworking skills. It was my intention to build a Mk3 using this technique and to publish the simpler cab but that never happened. If anyone wanted to there is no reason not to build this cab using any method they want so long as they keep the internal dimensions the same. Now he tells me
