The covers band, Night Shift, played one of our home venues, The Holly Bush at Marehay. It was a charity night to raise money for a community defibrillator. By donating our fee and running a raffle we raised just under £600. When added to the £700 raised by the cricket club across the road we’re nearly there. A good crowd, with deep pockets. We had some muso friends there so had a few guest vocal performances. I’m planning a quiet day today as we’ve got another one in Heanor tonight.13 points

We played at The Angel Inn in Andover last night, had a few of our regulars make the journey from Salisbury to see our first outing of the year, smallish crowd to start with and then the place soon filled up, lots of singing and even some dancing on the bar, so a great night was had by all. First gig with the Marshall VBA400 - I’d been hankering for a valve amp since joining this band as we do classic rock covers, and wanted that sound - wow! It certainly does that in spades, even had my jeans flapping a few times, reminded me of my younger days! Very happy😊👍🏻9 points

I was playing my BB1100S fretless earlier and thought I'd lower the action a smidge. Had a look down the neck and decided it could do with taking some relief out rather than lowering the saddles. I remembered the previous owner saying there was an adaptor on the trussrod that he'd left on to make adjustments easier, but had thought no more about it. When I had a proper look to adjust it, it turns someone has taken an 8mm 1/4 drive socket and drilled four holes through it to allow you to put a small screwdriver or allen key through and turn it if you don't have the proper 8mm trussrod wrench. What a genius idea. It stays snuggly in place held by the wood of the neck but turns easily. With a flatter board and some overdrive it absolutely growls now, mwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah for days. Socket left in place, The trussrod nut, The 8mm socket,8 points

Just got back from playing a gig at "The Pub" Lancaster. Small stage but a great venue. Was really busy sold some merch. Good night. 3 hour drive there and 2.5 back. It's almost 4 in the morning. Absolutely knackered and ready for bed. But it was worth it. Rock n roll.7 points

Bit of a weird one. Recently posted about putting this together… Then, in a fit of “oooh look” I bought an MIJ Precision body and all associated bits. It’s black. This blocks and bound neck, with a white guard would be like a Geddy Lee precision…and that strikes me as verrrryy cool. And the p/JJ setup is beautiful on this, but I’ve already got similar sounds with the Yamaha BB… Do I flog the blacktop body and make a Geddy Pee? I’m not playing with a band currently so I’m not losing out. Might do a mock up tomorrow. or tonight…see if the gin flows.6 points

Hi folks! Because I am thinning the herd, I decided to sell my Ken Smith BSR 5 Burner. This bass is one of the recent Burner basses built by japanese top notch bass luthier "Sleek Elite" und was bought at bassdirect. In my opinion these new Burner basses have the same building quality as the US basses and also fantastic woods. Although the older Burner bass are also fine instruments this one plays in another world. These are the specs: Neck: Bolt-on 3-piece laminated aged hardrock maple with graphite inlaid bars Fingerboard: Bubinga with Mother of Pearl side dots and facing dots Body: 2-piece Walnut Facings: 4A Flame Maple String Spacing: 18 mm Hardware: Black Smith Hardware Smith QSR Bridge Electronis: Smith 3-Band 18-Volt EQ (Bass, Mid, Treble), PU blend, Master Volume active/passive Mono Gigbag 4,3-4,4 Kg Nearly mint condition, no dents, no bigger scratches, no dings or dongs. Shipping is possible at buyers costs and risk. The export price to germany without taxes was 3333 GBP. You can still find this instrument in the "sold" area at bassdirect.co.uk. I am open to reasonable price offers. Don't hesitate to ask! Feel free to ask for more information. Although I would prefer a straight sale, maybe you can aourse my interests with a trade. Here are some YT-Clips with this bass:6 points

Doing another gig for Blue Angels tonight. Its the only gig where we've been offered a hand loading in and out by our audience. Plus they let you eat from their buffet and what a buffet they put on. First gig of 2023 so here's hoping no mistakes. Dave6 points

Ive my eye on something else so this needs to make way - urgently. £800 Ono I’ve had an itch to scratch on one of these for ages and its out of my system now. Beautiful instrument with a lush wooden finish which offers up a very appealing stingray tone when you want it. 30” scale means this is a breeze to play and it’s really light. No issues or drama with it, just needs a new home as I’ve bills to cover. About trades …...nothing really on my radar as I need the cash but try me, as the worst I can say is no thanks. Can post within UK.5 points

I turn 50 in March and my friend from my musical duo is also 50 this year. Around Xmas he mentioned the idea of a 50th birthday present to himself - an amp - and it doesn't take much for the average Basschat member to justify new gear. I have the big Orange rig that weighs a tonne but 35yrs in the Paul Simonon / Peter Hook school of low slung bass means my shoulder and neck are feeling their age. So I decided to return to the oxymoron that is "lightweight bass amps" Currently I am doing a lot of 80s alternative stuff and liking a bit of distortion and chorus in my sound. I've mostly played Orange or Ampeg over the years but during my poor days I had an old Peavey combo that I was delighted to see the back of. I like the look / sound of the Darkglass stuff but I like my kidneys too much to sell one to fund it. I then stumbled across Blackstar. Built in effects that sound alright (goodbye pedal board) and as silly as it sounds, I like the fact it looks like the last David Bowie album. I won't publicly name the shop with the (normally) excellent reputation that I bought it from but this is where my two week delay in posting begins. I could save a few quid on an ex-demo version so I did. It arrived the next day, immaculate with all the card and stickers in place still. However, no foot pedal and incredibly, no mains cable. I have a few cables but the pedal wasn't cool because it is a main part of the bass. I phoned them up and they were fairly disinterested but emailed back to say they'd found the mains cable and would mail it out. They tried to quibble the pedal stating it wasn't listed. 20 years ago I would have been fobbed off but I wasn't having it. All the blurb that came with it stated there was a pedal. The brand new ones also didn't mention a pedal on their site but I can'yt imagine they would have lost it as the thing was immaculate. I pushed back and the next day they emailed to say the pedal was located and would be sent out. I had to chase it a week later when they still hadn't sent it but it did finally come. I would have sent it back to be petty as they were being so silly about it but I really liked the amp. It sounds great, does a lot of tones, is much lighter and is very aesthetically pleasing. In the meantime I wanted the longer pedal that gives you tuning options. It was listed at £100 but I found one for £69 from a different shop. Great saving. Stupidly I kept googling and found one secondhand for £35 - too late, I'd bought it. The £69 arrived the next day, I plugged it in and NOTHING! Did all the idiot checks but I had a dud. Phoned the shop up, I had to wait in for a collection and they did a refund. Went back to the secondhand listing at £35 and it was still available. It arrived today, it is immaculate and more importantly, it works! My setup is here! I'd like to say it was easy. I can't wait to use it in anger.5 points

I sale this beautiful Yamaha 6 strings. I prefer to sell it because i only play 4 strings basses and it's a shame to let it sleep in its case. I had the same before (but 5 strings version) and even if it was a incredible bass, this one sounds 'deeper', B string is awesome, it's a monster tone, a pure bass sound (see comments on google you will find easily informations about what i write here). Specs : - 3bands eq + piezzo + volume + PU balance (no passive mode) - Yamaha double coil Alnico PU - Ash body with bubinga table top - Neck-trough construction (maple with mahogany) - Ebony fretboard - 24 frets / 35" scale - Original Yamaha hardcase - 5.3kg (very well balanced) - 18mm strings spacing Strings are still original ones, i don't change them for the sale because they still sound bright... This basse was barely played 2 or 3 hours (maybe less) since the buy in 2008 and produced in October 2007 (# 57). I cleaned it yesterday and i saw no scratches on it (see pictures they speak for themselves), quite incredible for an over 15 years instrument. I let plastics covers so they can be remove by the next owner 🙂 . Full set up done - low action 1.3mm (B string) / 1.5mm (C string) Price : 1700 euros shipment not include ! I can trade it, just ask me. I just don't play fretless and i have preference for 4 strings basses (5 strings ok too).5 points

Last night's gig was at "The Shed" in Charlbury; two sets, with a reading from a local author's book in between. Not bad at all, though due to an unfortunate accident I was using an EUB. I've not tried this particular instrument for gigs before and in the end it produced a reasonable tone, even with the bow.5 points

Hi folks Here's a really great through-neck fretless, I believe made in Japan. (see thread here) Very playable 2 octave neck, really great mwah and punch - the output from the pickups and 2-band active preamp is louder than any of my other basses, and it's fat and punchy! No idea what the woods are. Finish is matt/satin. Body is a sandwich of 3 woods, looks like some kind of mahogany in the middle with facings of slightly flamed/birdseye something. The neck is straight and the truss rod works fine. Currently strung with Ken Smith half-rounds. I bought this to have a tinker during lockdown and never got around to it, and it's time to thin the herd and give someone else the opportunity to have fun on it. Happy to ship in a well padded box at buyer's expense or can arrange meet up somewhere between Cambridge and London, other locations possible if I move around the country! Now the pictures!4 points

Never gigged, in fantastic condition. Plays and sounds great! Pau ferro fret board Gold high gloss. White dot inlays. Plecked. with original Sandberg Gig bag. DR Black Beauty 40 - 120 Strings Would prefer buyer collects or can meet if distance is agreeable. I could ship but would need to discuss expense as I would need to buy a box.4 points

Doing a major clear out at the moment, and this is first up on the block. I got this a number of years ago as a stage acoustic for loud band situations where feedback and cutting through might be difficult... but I now have Godins and this is definitely surplus to requirements. This is the Epiphone version of the Chet Atkins signature model that Gibson once made. Chambered, piezo pickup, active preamp. Fretboard goes up to 24 frets on the top strings, and the cutaway makes it easy to get up there. Gold-plated Grover tuners, gloss black finish, Schaller straplock buttons. Good condition, the usual playing and polish marks, but plays beautifully, is very comfortable with the slim body, and is extremely feedback resistant. £200 collected or may be able to deliver or meet up somewhere along the SE London / Croydon / Guildford (Surrey) area. Would prefer not to post, but if you want to arrange courier then we can discuss. I will have a few bits and bobs on the block in the next few weeks / months, so let me know if you are interested and I’ll keep you posted.4 points

Pretty happy yesterday when after a show with an SVT450 (which I really didn't like) the second show of the night was at a venue that had a Vanderkley rig. Epic amp. Lovely combination with the De Gier Soulmate. I have an Eich endorsement which I really enjoy but if I didn't...ooohhh boy.4 points

He may, he may not. When I do my initial sound check in a smaller room without major PA support I do it from out on the dance floor, adjusting my volume and tone for the best result there. Whatever that ends up sounding like on stage I live with.4 points

Far better of with a Yamaha is true of bikes and basses but it would be a boring World if Yamaha were the only option 👍4 points

It's with a heavy heart that I'm listing this. I ordered this bass January 20th 2015, and took delivery 4th November 2016. The spec is: Maple bird's-eye facing Mahogany core Vintage satin stain finish Side dots (between lines) Fretless ebony board with lined pear The band I was playing bass in folded just before I took delivery of this from Paul at Wal, and I have been back playing guitar in my main band since, and I'm looking to finance a Gibson Murphy Lab or Historic Makeover Les Paul. This bass has probably had less than 20 hours of home based play. In August 2017 the neck was sent to H.G. Thor (Woodwiz, New York) to undergo a full epoxy treatment which has now made this a top pro level instrument. Please note, H.G's wait list was already 4 years at the time this work was carried out, and I went on his list long before the Wal was ordered. I don't know if he still carries out this type of work, but is considered the best in the business for epoxy work. The bass is listed on the Wal Registry so buy with confidence It plays incredibly either with rounds or flats (I'll put the thomastiks back on before sale). Happy for potential buyers to come and try it out (Birmingham, B29). Preference is on collection due to value, but might entertain shipping/overseas etc. Also listed on Reverb and the bay (100% positive feedback on both). No trades. Thanks Matt (07554519171)3 points

Now Sold! As I slowly edge my way towards owning just a few instruments, this stunning Sadowsky is the next one up for sale. As an ex-Sadowsky dealer, I had first look at everything that came into the store. This particular one came from a customer in Canada, who had it custom made for him in NYC, and as soon as it arrived I knew it was 'the one' for me. It's quite simply the best J-style bass I've ever owned (and I've owned a LOT!). However, I pretty much only play my, shorter scale, Ritters these days and it seems a shame for this to be sitting on the wall & only taken down once a month or so. Sadowsky basses really are designed to be pro-level 'gig-machines'. It's hard to explain but they just sit perfectly in a live band mix & that onboard tone control offers so much subtle tweaking across songs - perfect in a covers band environment when you need to go from a clear precise tone to something with more grind & then back right off in pure passive tone control mode. It's been gigged maybe 10 times in its life and always kept under direct supervision. As a few people here know, I always keep every one of my instruments in excellent condition & this is no exception. It has some swirl marks on the pickguard, a few on the rear and some very tiny marks near the lower strap pin where I'm assuming it was rested on the ground at some point by the previous owner. Fretboard is a, pricey upgrade, Amazon rosewood and all frets, the board itself and the maple neck are in superb condition. The thin nitro finish on the back of the neck shows no signs of wear at all. Official specs are: Dark Cherry Burst Quilted Maple Top - one of those that Roger does so well with amazing depth of colour Chambered Swamp Ash Body - weighs just 8.2lbs / 3.7Kg Amazon Rosewood Fingerboard Mother of Pearl Face Dots (note that this is what the spec says but they look quite plain to me) Maple Neck with thin Nitro Finish 1.5" nut 21 Frets 20mm Bridge Spacing - EDIT, checked with Roger (and a tape!) and this would have the regular Sadowsky 20mm spacing not 19mm Sadowsky Humcancelling J pickups Sadowsky Preamp - Master Volume, Pickup Blend, Vintage Tone Control (with pull for passive mode), Treble & Bass Boost Current price for a new one of these with these specs is exactly $7,000 / £5,650 - that's excluding any delivery charges, VAT or Import duties. It is now possible to specify a Masterbuilt bass from Warwick in Germany but I don't think it would be any cheaper & the wait list is long - besides, it won't have had Roger's hands on it either, which, for me, was always something quite important as part of the 'brand experience' 😂 I've, therefore, priced it at around 25% off the base price for a new one. It will come in a Hiscox hard case & with a nearly new Sadowsy neoprene strap (super comfortable and, at just 8.2lbs, great for long sets!). I can potentially ship almost anywhere. EDIT: Checked direct with Sadowsky, and Gov sources, and this instrument would not require a CITES certificate for international shipping.3 points

For sale, my Spector NS2000/4, in superb condition - light finish swirling but that's about it. I sold this to a friend a few years ago and after much pleading he finally sold it back to me. I thought I'd keep it forever it's just not getting played. I've always thought of these as Spector's hidden gem, much faster players than the Euro due to the slimmer neck. Made in Korea, neck-through, EMG HZ pickups. Weight is 9.5lb by the bathroom scale technique. Collection from Dartford preferred, but I can post at buyer's expense and arrangement. I'm not really after trades but you never know!3 points

V. small bit of progress, I did a basic trim of the post execution headstump my idea always being to trim it right up to the metal block, so a bit of filing and sanding ( dead flat bit of wood with abrasive cloth glued to it) took it to the basic rough shape. I will be wanting to radius the corners a bit so it doesn't look so abrupt, I need to be careful not to take too much off as this lump has the mounting screws for the block going in a fair way, I don't wish to suddenly come up against a screw, and need to leave sufficient meat to provide a solid platform for the block. I may just leave it like this temporarily and do a cosmetic shaping later.3 points

So we have a new convert to the IEM world. My newest band venture features a female lead vocal. She’s struggled to pitch in ‘live’ rehearsals and even a 300w monitor wasn’t doing it for her. Last night, she tried my cheap LD Systems ME100 transmitter with a pair of KZ10’s and it was night and day and the best shes sang since we moved from acoustic to full band rehearsals. She will be using them again at tomorrows debut gig, and its been a massive confidence boost for her just at the right time. Now if I could just convert the other three…….😎3 points

Never was a fan of the pointy/droopy headstock on an otherwise conventional-looking bass, just looks like a mismatched bitsa. However - proper out-there 80s pointiness: hook it into my veins! My first 'serious' bass was one of these: Washburn B20 Stage. Sold it to buy something you could slap on, a somewhat less pointy Aria RSB Deluxe II. Always had GAS for an Iceman or a Westone Dynasty. Maybe a Raider in one of the 2-tone glitter finishes. Or an Aria ZZB in blood splatter...3 points

To be considered a pointy bass, i feel it needs a pointy body, not just a pointy headstock3 points

My very first bass was a Westone Raider I. One of my biggest regrets is having to sell it and, should I ever find one, I will buy another. My current number one bass is a BC Rich Warlock. I also now own a Thunderbird, but that’s fairly rounded. And a headless Flying V (not a bass, though I did once narrowly miss out on getting its bass twin). Seeing the other posts in this thread reminds me of a guitar (not a bass, sadly) that we had in the guitar shop I worked in when I was a kid. It was a BC Rich Ironbird in black with pink crackle. It was glorious! *Neither of these photos are of my own basses.3 points

Well these Player series basses are excellent. A few months back I got a 2021 Polar White P from here, and last weekend picked up in person from eBay, this lovely 2021 Black P. Mint condition other than the usual little scratches on the back. Just done a partial setup (truss rud, action/string height, intonation) but don’t feel I can properly judge it until I replace the dead strings (got some GHS Boomers on the way. I love that they put the Fender 75th anniversary badge on the 2021 models. A nice touch Here it is alongside the white one. Black is a touch heavier at a still reasonable 3.9Kg / 8.6lbs, white is an even lighter 3.7Kg / 8.2lbs. I’m a one bass guy, so will move one on when I’ve decided which to keep. White has CS62 pickups & a KiOgon loom installed and sounds fantastic, which I can easily swap over if I keep the black, which I probably will. I think these are outstanding value for money. I paid £575 with hard case for the white, and £480 without case for the black, both were mint. I was watching the black one at £550 on eBay, then one day it dropped to £480 and I was in there like a rat up a drainpipe. I’m not convinced that the recent USA models are worth the price jump (Mexican Player: around £700 new, £450-500 used. American Professional 2: around £1,700 new, £1100-1200 used). The Players are really excellent basses for a monkey3 points

And i always wanted one of these back in the day. It's an Aria ZZB which they also did in a blue sunburst or 50/50 black white graphic. I wasn't brave enough though and ended up with a safe looking Aria RSB Deluxe 2 instead...3 points

Same here, I used to lug a mahoosive trace stack around, sometimes two of them!…and a 2x10 combo as a bass monitor!! (Such a fool!) At least they were taken in a truck and handled entirely by roadies on some tours, which helped. Then I went through a pile of class d lightweight rigs, markbass, genz, bergantino etc, before switching to a pair of headrush frfr 112s when the gigs started to get a lot more frequent and I got older!! That quickly switched to one 112, and now my rig has vanished and my pedalboard has shrunk and I’m on IEMs, which is amazing!.. Same sound every gig, at whatever volume I choose, load in is quick and easy, as is a quick line check, and packing up is just putting my bass in it’s bag and zipping up my pedalboard. it’s ace. I don’t miss an amp other than for looks factor. I truly regret not doing it years earlier.3 points

As I said in another thread, they are both lovely, but quite different. The BB1200 is a good old fashioned P bass, but done fantastically well. The neck is gorgeous on it and it sounds like a good P bass should. The BBP34 is more refined - still vintage sounding at heart, but with a bigger variety of sounds available. Build quality is great on the BB1200, but absolutely outstanding on the BBP34. Really does feel like Custom Shop territory, which I suppose it is. Being absolutely honest, I prefer the BB1200, but they’re both fantastic instruments.3 points

… funnily enough this popped up the other day. I subscribe to the guy’s channel (pdbass) - his breakdown/appreciation of various players and tracks is always interesting (though some of the titles can be a bit clickbait-y!). This appraisal of Nick Beggs/Too Shy is well worth a watch.3 points

My Raider was my Christmas present for 1987, too. Nothing wrong with naff 80s Hair Metal! With any luck, I have an upcoming project that involves that very genre. A drummer has found me that wants to bring back Hair Metal. I don’t know why that, when he saw a photo of me, he thought Nikki Sixx… I look more like Nikki Sixx ate Vince Neill! Mind you, I’ve bought a Thunderbird now, so I suppose I am committed (or should be…).2 points

Make sure you document the condition closely before sending it back so as not to find the seller suggesting some of the damage was caused in the returns process...2 points

You’re only as good as your drummer. Maybe a tired old phrase but true. I’ve been very fortunate and somewhat spoiled (mostly) and have had the privilege of playing with some excellent drummers and a couple world class players. I’m not a snob about who I play with but I’ve never lasted long in a band with an average drummer. Not that I’m good but a good drummer makes you up your game (as you said). It’s healthy. I find myself becoming really complacent if the drummer isn’t much good. A so so drummer and a complacent bass player doesn’t sound like a good combination 😂 Fella who we’re with now played a 4min track recently without a click. Dragged the recording into Logic, played some keys, cut and pasted them throughout the song and they only went very slightly out of sync at the last 30 seconds! He’s a metronome!2 points

Benevolent dictatorship. Someone listens to everyone's ideas and makes decisions and leads. I want to be in a band with a leader who has vision and direction.
