I went out and saw the band I’m presently auditioning for last night in a local pub. Had a great night, and they were keen to chat with me in the break. Also introducing me to their little gaggle of friends and family…sounds positive, I think?15 points

2016 American Vintage '63 Reissue Precision Bass in faded sonic blue with rosewood fingerboard. In excellent condition. There's some minor checking in the finish (it's very thin nitro) and a tiny chip in the lacquer on the lower side of the neck pocket. The colour is faded and has slowly greened giving it a very vintage vibe and it's a nice weight. The guard currently fitted is an official Fender AV tort guard, but the original mint guard is supplied. Strung with La Bella 760FL flats. Original case, covers and all case candy are present. The side dot markers on all of these are quite dark, so I have fitted Rosette Small Ivory Dots available here: https://www.rosetteguitarproducts.com/new-page-2 These don't involve any modification or glue, and the finish remains intact. They can simply be rubbed off if you don't like them, but I'll give the new owner the option to keep them or remove them. Alder body Maple C shaped neck (some nice figuring on the neck) Round-laminated rosewood fingerboard, 7.25" radius 1.74" nut width Bone nut American Vintage '63 Precision Bass Split Single-Coil 20 vintage style frets Vintage reverse tuners 3-ply mint green pickguard Chrome pickup and bridge covers, lower finger rest, clay-coloured dot inlays, auxiliary strap button on headstock American Vintage Bass bridge with Threaded Steel "Barrel" Saddles Vintage blonde case with red interior Case candy Weight: 4.04 kg / 8.9 lbs I'd prefer collection, or meet up to start with. Noisy good fun. Pub rock covers but a generally more modern take on it, none of the usual suspects until the last few songs. A lot of stuff people wouldn’t necessarily know beforehand. One lovely little faux pas turned out quite well… We forgot to switch the main PA on for the second set, so the vocals were only coming out of the monitors. Happily they were so f-ing loud it actually worked fine, and balanced better because we weren’t overloading the PA with the guitars and drums as well. Actually sounded better apparently 🤣🤣12 points

Went to see my brother's band yesterday so played the role of clueless roadie. Was a big night as his first full gig since having the trapezium bone taken out of his plucking hand. He was a bit nervous due to a bizzare accident the day before that had made his wrist very sore. Place was rammed, crowd loved it and he had a great time although at a few points he was in a fair bit of discomfort. I also got to drool over the bassist's CAR Bongo.10 points

went ok, didn't play particularly well. Had to go through PA, no backline as amp left at singers and I forgot! Laney Digbeth preamp pedal to the rescue so no problem there. New strings took a while to bed in and kept going out of tune for the first few numbers. Not good, note to self, never put brand new strings on before a gig! Not sure if I like them either, blue steels, very aggressive tone, probably need to adjust eq from the elixirs I'm used to. Crowd really enjoyed it, dancing and cheering so thats all that really matters at the end of the day. Landlord over the moon, cash on the nail etc.. back by 1am for cheese on toast and a glass of dry white vino, can't complain...9 points

Ours went well. Our singist is recovering from flu and his voice isn't quite there yet so I got to sing Common People. I quite enjoyed it. Playing was tight, no major clangers, and we got paid on our way out the door, so it went as smooth as they come. Singist, bassist, guitarist, guitarist, drumist.9 points

The drive was a bit hairy - having to wind the windows down to see at junctions etc - but the gig was great and surprisingly well attended given it's January and the weather was so poor.. Someone took this pic of me. I looked in my files and found one from 25 years ago for comparison purposes. Other than a minor follicular pigmentational degradation issue nothing seems to have changed much !7 points

Last minute gig at a new venue for us last night ( The Cave in Paisley ). We had a booking for the same venue for next month and we hadn’t rehearsed this year. I know a few of you on here have played it, but what is that load in all about. 🙄 Loved the gig, crowd loved us and we already had another booking, but the load in and load out and wracked my already old and decrepit body. 🤣7 points

Really reluctant sale of this bass, but I currently have four 5-string Jazz styles basses and I have my eye on a Musicman 5 so trying to raise some funds! This has one of the nicest 2 piece Swamp Ash bodies I have seen on a Sire - almost impossible to see the join unless you look at the end grain. Really excellent condition as can be seen on the pics. If there's any marks/dents I certainly can't find them! Only real sign of use is that the pick up cover was fitted at some point and has left some holes in the pick guard, but unfortunately I don't have the cover to fit back on. When I got the bass the preamp had some issues so I purchased a new one from Andertons and put that in. While I was at it I also fitted a decent Switchcraft socket as the Sire ones are a weak link I think. The bass also had a clear perspex ramp fitted between the pickups which is a nice Mod but easily removed if needed. Strings could probably do with a change but have some life left. Medium-low action at the moment. Ideally Pick up from Chelmsford, Essex, but I do have a box and will post at Buyers cost/risk. £3756 points

Swapped out the neck on two of my Sabres. Sledge is wearing a new pickguards.com black abalone guard as well as the maple neck. The natural is now the same as the Sabre I owned for a while and then stupidly sold a long, long time ago. Probably keep them like this for a while...6 points

Blue Angels gig went well. They were celebrating Burns Night and we had to stop half way thru 1st set to allow the piper to bring in the Haggis. Fair old size of haggis too, must have been a farm fed one Also had an issue with lights cutting out in the venue which delayed our start quite a bit till they sorted it. Usual road closures on way home meant a 1 hr drive was 2 hrs using single track back roads to get round the closure. Dave6 points

Punk Birthday gig in Hemel last night. Suprisingly well attened considering the Acton lot also had a birthday Bash, The wingmen were in London and Dropkick Murphys were at Wembley. The guys running it are putting a huge eeffortto turn this pub into a venue. Stage sound was really hardwork, stage monitors were either feeding back humming or feeding back making it very hard tohear the other members, but we went down well with the crowd. Sound man is new and he is re-doing everything next week and it will be easier next time. Bands were fed with a mountain of pizza and loads of free drink. Never been looked after so well. Looking forward to play there again in April when we'll be support XSLF5 points

Almost a week with my VM5 now. I can’t get over the quality of this instrument. The balance of the bass is incredible and at 3.6kg, really light for a 5 string. The sounds that it gives is lovely, a nice growl but in with perfect control. I am now definitely a Sandberg convert.5 points

Since this came up on the TB forum also, let me provide the answer that I provided there. On the Pre-DI, there's a LOT more going on internally so the left to right signal flow matching the left to right feature architecture which makes more sense, otherwise every signal would have to cross over at least once and in some cases twice. This applies to both the jacks and the controls working together with the signal path rather than against it. As the gain increases (there's over 40dB of available gain), and as the number of amplification stages increases, the opportunities for noise and cross talk multiply exponentially. This is why ALL consoles and channel strips follow this format... the jacks in the same order as the controls and the controls in the same order as the signal flow for performance. This is a very quiet pedal compared with the average pedal. In another life, I designed pro audio consoles, and Genz Benz (Jeff's earlier company) started out as a pro audio company, and the designer of this product (Scott) is also a pro audio guy as well as an accomplished bass player. I was only responsible for most of the mechanical and PCB layout on this pedal. Since these are top mount jacks, it doesn't really matter from a wiring perspective as it does with side mount jacks (which I do not care for, especially) when there are more than 2 jacks).5 points

Now Sold! As I slowly edge my way towards owning just a few instruments, this stunning Sadowsky is the next one up for sale. As an ex-Sadowsky dealer, I had first look at everything that came into the store. This particular one came from a customer in Canada, who had it custom made for him in NYC, and as soon as it arrived I knew it was 'the one' for me. It's quite simply the best J-style bass I've ever owned (and I've owned a LOT!). However, I pretty much only play my, shorter scale, Ritters these days and it seems a shame for this to be sitting on the wall & only taken down once a month or so. Sadowsky basses really are designed to be pro-level 'gig-machines'. It's hard to explain but they just sit perfectly in a live band mix & that onboard tone control offers so much subtle tweaking across songs - perfect in a covers band environment when you need to go from a clear precise tone to something with more grind & then back right off in pure passive tone control mode. It's been gigged maybe 10 times in its life and always kept under direct supervision. As a few people here know, I always keep every one of my instruments in excellent condition & this is no exception. It has some swirl marks on the pickguard, a few on the rear and some very tiny marks near the lower strap pin where I'm assuming it was rested on the ground at some point by the previous owner. Fretboard is a, pricey upgrade, Amazon rosewood and all frets, the board itself and the maple neck are in superb condition. The thin nitro finish on the back of the neck shows no signs of wear at all. Official specs are: Dark Cherry Burst Quilted Maple Top - one of those that Roger does so well with amazing depth of colour Chambered Swamp Ash Body - weighs just 8.2lbs / 3.7Kg Amazon Rosewood Fingerboard Mother of Pearl Face Dots (note that this is what the spec says but they look quite plain to me) Maple Neck with thin Nitro Finish 1.5" nut 21 Frets 20mm Bridge Spacing - EDIT, checked with Roger (and a tape!) and this would have the regular Sadowsky 20mm spacing not 19mm Sadowsky Humcancelling J pickups Sadowsky Preamp - Master Volume, Pickup Blend, Vintage Tone Control (with pull for passive mode), Treble & Bass Boost Current price for a new one of these with these specs is exactly $7,000 / £5,650 - that's excluding any delivery charges, VAT or Import duties. It is now possible to specify a Masterbuilt bass from Warwick in Germany but I don't think it would be any cheaper & the wait list is long - besides, it won't have had Roger's hands on it either, which, for me, was always something quite important as part of the 'brand experience' 😂 I've, therefore, priced it at around 25% off the base price for a new one. It will come in a Hiscox hard case & with a nearly new Sadowsy neoprene strap (super comfortable and, at just 8.2lbs, great for long sets!). I can potentially ship almost anywhere. EDIT: Checked direct with Sadowsky, and Gov sources, and this instrument would not require a CITES certificate for international shipping.4 points

Hi all, The band I am in, The Tim Shez Band, today has released our debut EP, 'Everything We Thought We Knew'. It contains 5 tracks and I play fretless on all 5 tracks. The style is acoustic singer songwriter with Tim playing acoustic, singing and some keys, Ben of drums and percussion but only using brushes, hotrods and beaters and myself on fretless. It's very chilled, emotional and intimate It's available on all the major sites to download and stream so if anyone fancies a listen then the links are below. So, it arrived, here he is getting to know his new big brother I have to admit that I'm ever so slightly in love with this mongrel of a bass. The tone is WAY better than I expected, quite mellow yet articulate albeit with a rather baked-in low level reverb, courtesy I'd guess of the aircraft hanger-like construction. The first thing I discovered is that if it gets cold it rattles, and when there are around 150 screws into the metal it can be quite an ask to find which of them is causing the problem. The big test of course is how it responds in a room with a drummer and a mic, I'll be reporting back. One very happy owner, as the seller said, I now have custody, it's a responsibility I intend to take seriously 👍4 points

And I still cant quite believe I still own this little crocstar.. having lost basses and amps and tons of other shite over the 43 years i have been playing.. played my mates 73 jazz through it last night, 1st time I lit it up since at least 2002, and before that I think the last person to use it was guitar legend Link Wray when we were recording his “Shadow Man” album. Life is weird, no doubt.4 points

Hi folks Here's a really great through-neck fretless, I believe made in Japan. (see thread here) Very playable 2 octave neck, really great mwah and punch - the output from the pickups and 2-band active preamp is louder than any of my other basses, and it's fat and punchy! No idea what the woods are. Finish is matt/satin. Body is a sandwich of 3 woods, looks like some kind of mahogany in the middle with facings of slightly flamed/birdseye something. The neck is straight and the truss rod works fine. Currently strung with Ken Smith half-rounds. I bought this to have a tinker during lockdown and never got around to it, and it's time to thin the herd and give someone else the opportunity to have fun on it. Happy to ship in a well padded box at buyer's expense or can arrange meet up somewhere between Cambridge and London, other locations possible if I move around the country! Now the pictures!3 points

I love the worn pebbled body and neck of the Ibby SR's but... just want a plain passive P. So after years of going on about it, I decided to do something about. Ebay ad by Gear4Music for a SR300 with faulty electrics, Spares or Repair. Body/Neck/Bridge/Tuners Sorted... Pots Ordered and some Adagio Flats. Scratches on the body, with a few cracks. I was hoping this was just on the finish, but after a few hours of heat gun stripping (more to come tommorow...) shows some surface cracks. Hopefully all will be OK. Neck is OK, Sanded and Furniture Waxed the back, Polished the Frets and Cleaned and Lemon Oiled the fretboard. Got to sand off the headstock finish. Wish i weighed the Body before stripping! sealer or filler is real thick in places, and really taken hold of the mahogany, so a few digs, and some possibly already there and filled. Plan is get the pickup cavities filled, and re routed for the Single P with the extra EQ holes 'doweled' - Calling Basschaters! Finish is going to be plain wax, maybe a light coat of thinned Danish Oil if this will help with the surface cracks.3 points

I turn 50 in March and my friend from my musical duo is also 50 this year. Around Xmas he mentioned the idea of a 50th birthday present to himself - an amp - and it doesn't take much for the average Basschat member to justify new gear. I have the big Orange rig that weighs a tonne but 35yrs in the Paul Simonon / Peter Hook school of low slung bass means my shoulder and neck are feeling their age. So I decided to return to the oxymoron that is "lightweight bass amps" Currently I am doing a lot of 80s alternative stuff and liking a bit of distortion and chorus in my sound. I've mostly played Orange or Ampeg over the years but during my poor days I had an old Peavey combo that I was delighted to see the back of. I like the look / sound of the Darkglass stuff but I like my kidneys too much to sell one to fund it. I then stumbled across Blackstar. Built in effects that sound alright (goodbye pedal board) and as silly as it sounds, I like the fact it looks like the last David Bowie album. I won't publicly name the shop with the (normally) excellent reputation that I bought it from but this is where my two week delay in posting begins. I could save a few quid on an ex-demo version so I did. It arrived the next day, immaculate with all the card and stickers in place still. However, no foot pedal and incredibly, no mains cable. I have a few cables but the pedal wasn't cool because it is a main part of the bass. I phoned them up and they were fairly disinterested but emailed back to say they'd found the mains cable and would mail it out. They tried to quibble the pedal stating it wasn't listed. 20 years ago I would have been fobbed off but I wasn't having it. All the blurb that came with it stated there was a pedal. The brand new ones also didn't mention a pedal on their site but I can'yt imagine they would have lost it as the thing was immaculate. I pushed back and the next day they emailed to say the pedal was located and would be sent out. I had to chase it a week later when they still hadn't sent it but it did finally come. I would have sent it back to be petty as they were being so silly about it but I really liked the amp. It sounds great, does a lot of tones, is much lighter and is very aesthetically pleasing. In the meantime I wanted the longer pedal that gives you tuning options. It was listed at £100 but I found one for £69 from a different shop. Great saving. Stupidly I kept googling and found one secondhand for £35 - too late, I'd bought it. The £69 arrived the next day, I plugged it in and NOTHING! Did all the idiot checks but I had a dud. Phoned the shop up, I had to wait in for a collection and they did a refund. Went back to the secondhand listing at £35 and it was still available. It arrived today, it is immaculate and more importantly, it works! My setup is here! I'd like to say it was easy. I can't wait to use it in anger.3 points

I’ve always loved the Rickenbacker vibe and was fortunate enough to be able to scratch the itch and buy one back in 2021. I’ve joined the odd Ricky Facebook group and whatnot, noodled about with Rufus (I called it Rufus. Please don’t think less of me) and have come to realise that this bass is basically a Harley Davidson. It looks iconic and sounds iconic, owners absolutely love it but in the cold light of day the build quality is actually pretty rough and you’d probably be better off with a Yamaha.3 points

Hey all. For sale (or possible trade with a Roadworn or Nitro finished Jazz of some kind) I purchased this new a couple of years ago well because it was charging green mainly…..and I love a good stingray. These Stingray specials are just brilliant IMO. I’ve had a lot of different stingrays in the past and I have always loved them but the new improvements really are actual improvements. They feel way more ergonomic in every way. The roasted neck is just perfect, kind of less baseball bat esq than the old ones. The price of a new one in these crazy days is utterly mental: circa 1000 english pounds more than this and also not in charging green. Condition is as new. All the case candy is still present. I actually cannot find a mark on it. It has been to numerous band practices and a few gigs but seems to have escaped unscathed and all it’s charging green loveliness is intact. Weight is 9lb or 4kg Courier to your door in its proper, nuclear detonation proof musicman case, included if you reside in the Uk. Happy to ship elsewhere but will need to be organised by yourself did I ever mention… this bass comes in charging green…. etc TK x3 points

Quest Atak 1b Bass made at the the legendary Matsumoku factory Japan in 1985, very rare to find in the UK. Good condition, punchy pickups and comfortable to play with a slim smooth neck with nice low action. Neck and frets are in excellent condition, a few love bites to the back of the body giving a slightly roadworn mojo, electrics all working good, comes with a padded gig bag, trades considered, can post for an additional £20.3 points

I’ve been using 1-2-4 fingering on a 34 inch scale for about a week, just simple exercises a few minutes each day to try and get my muscle memory sorted. So far: I’m finding my pinkie gets tired quite quickly, but the pain/cramping in the back of my fretting hand has not revisited. For simple ascending, descending semitone runs and simple riffs, I’m starting to find the new fingering is bedding in, for scales I’m nowhere near as fast or fluid (which was not very fast or fluid to start with!) as with OFPF … partly as my ring finger keeps wanting to get involved and partly the increased position shifts required. Overall I feel it is an approach that will work for me and that in the not too distant future, these issues will reduce and allow me to comfortably play the two long scale basses I have. I’ve not yet tried switching to OFPF when I play higher frets as it is likely to confuse my wee brain just now! In other news I’ve managed to locate one of the GSRM25 sub short scale 5 stringers I’ve been looking for, hopefully it will arrive Thursday … it will be interesting to see how I get on with it being ultra light and with a 28.6 inch scale length. Hi all, I'm pretty new here, and new basses do not come around too often for me, so I'm excited to share this - a new Made in Japan Hard Puncher TPB97. But first - what a lovely, respectful community you have here; I've thoroughly enjoyed stumbling upon this website, and the couple of dealings I've had with people on the marketplace have been first class. I love Ps, and have only gigged on two basses prior to this - a second-hand Godin PJ that lasted me 15 years before age-induced niggles made it worth upgrading, and an American Fender pro ii precision, which I owned for a year, but never really gelled with (and a number of little quality control issues were enough to put me off - although that's a story for another day). Since summer, I've been getting around the country, visiting shops, and generally playing as many Ps as I could get my hands on. It's been great fun, making a day of it with friends on a number of occasions. This Tokai was one of the first I played, and for me, none of the subsequent Ps I played felt or sounded as right to me. It also has a feel of sturdiness and quality to it, that many of the basses I played did not. The fit and finish are genuinely first class, and it has a hand-wound pickup apparently, which has a really resonant, piano-like vibe. It cost just north of a grand, so not exactly cheap, but it is lovely. Apparently, Tokai do a factory setup, and then export models get a second set-up at the closest distribution centre to the shop, so it has a nice action out of the case. It was very hard to find anything at all about newer Tokai basses online, or on English speaking forums, so hopefully this will be useful to someone who is curious about their quality. I also played some of the cheaper new Made in China Tokais, which were not nearly as nice. I've had it for a week, and I'm not gigging until NYE now, but can't wait! All in all, just a very well made P Bass, but for those who like some specs: U-shaped neck, but it measures 22mm at the first fret, so not too chunky. It suits me just right. 42mm nut. Rosewood fretboard. It comes with Gotoh hardware, GHS boomers on it, and has a compound radius (7.25 - 10). The only downside so far is that the tweed case it comes with looks lovely, but there is a bit of play in the sides, and I wonder how sturdy it will be long term.3 points

Had a passive VS4, lovely bass, wasn’t quite there for that ‘Fender’ sound, but then again if I had popped a pick up of choice, something like the 58p from Creamery, then it prolly would be. Again it’s your preference of sound, but the framework you get it in is immense with a Sandy3 points

The covers band, Night Shift, played one of our home venues, The Holly Bush at Marehay. It was a charity night to raise money for a community defibrillator. By donating our fee and running a raffle we raised just under £600. When added to the £700 raised by the cricket club across the road we’re nearly there. A good crowd, with deep pockets. We had some muso friends there so had a few guest vocal performances. I’m planning a quiet day today as we’ve got another one in Heanor tonight.3 points
