  1. Well, I’m happy to report that Muziker have done me right. After reporting the damage, they offered me £100 refund, which I have accepted (I’d paid £238 + Duty Paid Shipping). Apart from the cosmetic damage around the bottom strap pin, I am really happy with ‘Ibby’. The neck is a nice profile with a smooth finish and nicely cleaned fret edges. The pups sound pretty good and seem noise free. She is light (for sure under 3kg) with on,y a small amount of neck dive. The tuners are OKish, tho the E unit is a bit stiff … I’ll probably swap in some new, black, lighter ones at some point (and probably black knobs and bridge). First she needs a setup to lower the action and sort intonation and then I’ll use some superglue to reattach the surface bits that have come away … I’ll probably also need to get something to fill in any little gaps and then polish up the area. Thanks all for your ideas and support. S’manth x

  2. This popped up on eBay the other day - I was too weak to resist and, despite having a few strong words with myself, I bought it. For a good price, too, especially considering this is one of the better early copies, a Matsumoku, I think. It arrived today and I am pleased to see the pics on eBay showed it to be on worse condition than it is in the flesh. Pretty light at 3.5kg on the nose. I've not done anything much to it other than remove the bridge cover, lower the action a touch and have a quick noodle but already it has some interesting tones with the dead roundwounds that are on it. Not sure when I will get around to taking it to bits for a clean/proper set up and check under the hood to see what the pickups are but to my ears it has a different tone to an Antoria EB-3 shorty I had a year or so ago. Bridge pup in particular is a lot stronger. Don't think the mudbucker is a sidewinder, doesn't sound bassy enough, but it is a nice tone, especially when both are selected. early days but I am inclined to leave this one unmolested, maybe get one of those 'treble/bass' surrounds for the toggle switch. Intonation on the 2 point bridge seems OK as is, strangely. Good enough, anyway. So that's saved me £150 on a new bridge already! Holding picture from the eBay listing until I take some more tomorrow but as this is officially the NBD I thought I'd start the nthread

  4. In thirty five years of playing I have been fortunate enough to gig with a few people I grew up listening to. I've also gotten to meet a fair few away from my own playing. Just a cool story for you all; growing up in the 80s we all got into the bands of the time. The Cure were massive for our group of friends. Over lockdown I started listening to all that Goth / 80s alternative stuff again and reminding myself why we all thought bass was the coolest instrument originally. I've spent the last couple of years playing in a little Goth duo. At a recent open mic I discovered one of my fellow musician friends was friends with Simon Gallup. I felt a bit cheeky but asked him if he'd get me Simon's autograph. He was happy to do so and equally Simon also said he was happy to sign it. I had a framed picture as I have a lot of music pictures in my house so I popped it over to my mate Phil. I then waited for them to catch up. Fast forward to today and I picked it up. I was pleased he personalised it as it isn't one to sell. I went into my mate's music room and was admiring his kit. Funnily enough when I picked up his acoustic bass it turns out it is the one used one The Cure's acoustic hits album. I bust out a few of my Cure bass lines on it which was pretty cool, and manged to upstage playing my friend's Ric 4001, which happened to be my YOB bass. Any cool stories from you?

  5. Nope, not Ian Paisley's famous blurts, but a proper Rally Basso 504 FM. Why they called a 4 string the 504 and not a 404 is a mystery, but what the hey. Probably the last brand new Rally in the UK, as the designers of the Rally range of bass /guitars / banjos etc., Dae Won Instruments of Korea, went bust a while ago. I havent seen another Rally Basso, any model not just mine, for sale anywhere. We're now talkings hens' lips rarity. There's probably a few ( or less ) used ones in private hands. I know this because i sold my last Rally ( exactly the same model as this ) 6 years ago. Oh why oh why do we get rid of them then have regrets ?? It's such a great bass, i decided to hunt down another. I found just 1. No second hand jobs for sale, just this new old stock bass on its own This was in a shop for , so the owner told me, 2.5/3 years. Perhaps he shouldnt have told me, because i smelt a deal. Surely they want shot of it after all this time. To cut the haggling story short, i got around £65 off the advertised price. It has a 2 piece mahogany body with a ( no thin veneers here, low lifers ) 15mm thick flame maple cap, hence the model name FM i presume. Maple neck with rosewood stringers and rosewood FB. So nicely put together. No sharp ends anywhere. Shallow neck , which is my thang Leccies are 9v - 1 Vol, 2 Tone, 1 Blend. Their own humbuckers too. I can only describe the tone as pokey with sparkle, but can be EQ'd for that low mid shove that i like. Balances on the strap a treat, and weighs in at 8.8 Lbs which is ok for me The horrid camera flash doesnt do it justice

  6. Put the below together for some heavier sounds, although will also work as a more generic ‘fly-board’ thanks to the versatility of the HX Stomp. The DIY pedal on the left is a JMK Big Bass Drive I built a while ago, aside from an LED I need to fix, it actually sounds pretty awesome. I have something else planned for that first drive space though, just waiting for it to arrive back with me (tis out on loan). As always, CIOK doing the heavy lifting here! Si

  7. Very pleased to report that I’ve managed to acquire an Ibanez GSRM25 … a five string 28.6 inch scale bass. ‘Ibby’ arrived with some damage to the finish around the end strap pin, but Muziker refunded me £100 (apx 40%) in compensation. I’m very happy with her in all other respects (tho have some minor mods planned) and am delighted to be able to finally own one of these, I find the very short scale works great for me (preventing fretting hand cramping) and she is so light! Came with roundwounds, which I’d like to change to flats … any suggestions from other owners (I know Newtone can probably help but not sure if they do flats) S’manth x

  8. Just got back from a gig with my band Sour Tusk. We played a place called The cask bah! In Loughborough. Bit apprehensive when I first arrived it's a really tiny micro pub. Really tiny stage. Nowhere to store guitar cases etc. Good job we're only a 3 piece. But it was sold out so it was packed. We seemed to go down really well. Would like to play there again. Though I'm still think it's more suited for acoustic gigs. Also got back home a rather more civilized times than the 4am after the last gig. 😅

  9. Hi guys just wanted to share something I’ve been working over the last 10 months This is my first custom built bass, started from zero, by drawing the bass in 3D (after tutorials on YouTube😂), then decided scale length, woods, hardware and electronics I have my own foderas so I based my draft on a similar shape of the Emperor, the result is a Hybrid monarch/emperor, with right shape to be easily played when sitting on a chair, headless with tuning bridge details 30,75 scale 5 strings B-G zero radius fretboard with SS Evo Gold frets ebony board mahogany back neck through hard Italian flamed maple graphite bars in the neck Flamed maple top nordstrand big singles + Mike pope preamp painted by hand with oil, 10+ layers here’s how it started And here’s the result

  11. Don’t actually have too much of a problem with the “all original apart from…” language - I’ve probably used it myself at times! Other than it being a bit mangled on the grammar front it does seem a fairly straightforward way of referencing what’s what on an instrument. Nothing really winds me up language-wise musically other than people referring to an instrument as “she”.

  12. Everything is ready to go, @tubbybloke68. I'm just waiting for the woodwork. I'll post pics as soon as I have a production model finished, but it's basically a scaled-down version of the Monaco. So the appearance and cosmetics are the same - it's just smaller.

  13. FENDER AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL PRECISION BASS GUITAR 2017 Antique Olive with original hard case and candy, In excellent condition never gigged and I’m struggling to find anything significant in the way of wear to be honest, can ship at buyer’s cost and risk, Here’s the blurb about this bass from Fender: Overview The Fender American Professional Series Precision Bass continues the legacy of one of the world's most iconic electric basses with a full complement of new electronics and hardware appointments. The Professional Precision is centered around a newly-designed Pro-V Split-Coil pickup developed in tandem with low-end guru Michael Bump, providing a vintage-voiced response with plenty of growl and zip. Matching this sonic masterpiece is a smooth-action '63 "Golden" P Bass profile neck in a satin finish supported by a pair of Posiflex graphite rods to prevent warping and keep your sound on point for years to come.

  14. Some people play the same bass all of their life which is cool. Others ...like me.. are restless souls. After 42 years 'on the strings' i was musing over a cup of coffee, how many manufacturers had i owned example(s) of. So.. 15. New ABM owner here. EVO II 500 2 x 10 combo, dated 2006. Rescued this in a poorly state from Facebook Market place for a mere £60. One phone call to Dave at Ashdown, and one postal delivery later, now potentiometers all round installed (two of the EQ pots had broken off at the shaft!), and a coat of car vinyl restorer product, and its as good as new! Absolutely amazing customer service from Ashdown, who posted out ath their expense and refused to charge - so I'll make a charity donation in lieu.

  16. I put some Elixir Nanoweb Nickel Roundwounds on the SG, this morning. So it's gone from La Bella Deep Talking Bass flats (39 to 96) to Elixir Nanoweb Rounds (45 to 105). They've been on just over 4 hours and been played for about 45 minutes. I'm impressed that the action has stayed put and the intonation is still very well set. It's very much a matter of taste but I think the new strings have brought the bass more to life. It's still a vintage tone but with these more contemporary pickups and roundwound strings, there seems to be more tones, that are very useable. Yeah, I think this newbie will be seeing some action, very soon. Here's my present trio:

  17. Can't seem to see many photos of Calibas's on here so here's mine which I played for a number of years and sold in 2004. It was my first foray into boutique basses and was for me an "Ah, that's what a great bass is like" moment. It was a few years old when I bought it and had some wear and tear so I stripped it, had John refurb the electrics, body and neck resprayed and buffed by a local shop and I cleaned / lacquered all the brass bits to keep the bling alive 😁 Quality bass with lots of nice features but weighed about 11lbs+

  20. Recounted previously in the Forum, but, since you asked... Over a decade ago now, Our Youngest expressed a desire to play bass; more particularly a five-string bass. At the time, the Cort GB75 was the least expensive new active fiver I could find. Despite this , it has turned out to be an excellent player (although slightly heavy for my old shoulders; I'm more used to my Verithin..!). The 'stock' p/ups are excellent, the pre-amp does the job well; no complaints whatsoever. Why this preamble..? Maceo Parker was billed to play at the local festival in which I was involved (3 Elephants; look it up...). We got a call the day before from their manager, asking if we could provide an active five-string. He explained that their bassist (Rodney 'Skeet' Curtis...) had had his Lakland fail on him in Scandinavia, and had no spare. I offered our humble Cort when they arrived; he strung it up with his own strings and used it for the show that evening. By coincidence, the same configuration (1 x MM, 1 x J p/ups...) as his Lakland. No-one noticed any drop in quality during their show, through the Ampeg backline rig, which only goes to prove that it really is 'all in the fingers'. He was complimentary about the bass, and gracious enough to sign the back afterwards, but that's worn off since. Happy daze..!

  22. We once arrived at a pub called the Smawthorne Arms as a last minute replacement band where , it turned out , the last thing anybody wanted was a power trio. We had a chat and did three things. Reduced the volume , reduced the tempo and reduced the energy. We actually enjoyed it and so did the williams. Though we never went back (our choice - they did ask us to) we did purposely find another two or three gigs that became regulars where we applied the same thinking and that type of gig became known as a ' Smawthorne job'.

  23. We played a couple of gigs this week - in Peterborough and then at one of my favourite venues, Sheffield City Hall. For anyone who doesn't know it, this magnificent building was designed in the early 1920's but not opened until 1932. The Oval Hall holds around 2,200 people seated, and we had about 1,600 people in on Friday night. It's the first time we've ever brought in a 'flown' PA system, and it really made a difference. We've just acquired a new desk too (an Allen&Heath Avantis if anyone's interested) and it needed a fair old soundcheck in order to get everything right. Despite our singer fighting off a cold, we all played well and the audience were amazing - definitely one of the best gigs I've done with the band* over the last 13 years. *The ELO Experience

  25. Very rare UK built Shergold Marathon 8 string bass in cherry red. Probably made in 1980/81 as the shield logo is the later embossed version. There were very few of these made and this is all original but missing the small trussrod cover. The pickup sounds great and the bass plays well on the lower frets but past the 12th some of the notes choke out. So it could do with a set up and work on the higher frets to sort this out. The bass is strung with a GHS custom set. The bass is light weight and other than the usual Shergold lacquer cracking and some dings and marks is in fairly good condition for a forty plus year old bass. The bass has two outputs for stereo but I’ve not used this facility. The neck is nice and slim and as it’s an 8 string with lots of tension on the neck the neck has a slight forward bow. I have also played this as a four string bass and it is typical Shergold very playable and punchy sounding. Truss rod works as it ought to. A piece of history. No case or bag but I can post at cost. Only selling as I am moving house and need to move on some of my collection. UK only. No trades. Thanks!

  26. I have decided to put my JMJ Signature Mustang for sale or trade. This bass has sentimental value to me, as it was the first bass I bought when I decided to get back into playing a few years ago. I suppose most people on the forum know about the specs on this one: Fender teamed up with Justin Meldal-Johnsen to recreate a version of his ’66 Fender Mustang. All the marketing aside, I think this is an excellent bass if you are looking for something slightly different than a traditional P or J bass. The combination of a shorter scale and a smaller pickup gives it a distinct tone that has a lot of punch but doesn’t step on other instruments – perfect for a denser mix. Regarding the looks, I think all the paint checking and nicks/scratches are fantastically done on these models. I also own a Nate Mendel signature, and I feel that this is a better ‘road-worn’ bass; it looks much closer to a Custom Shop aged finish than my NM bass. I like the colour as well! I haven’t gigged with it, used it at home for recording and some rehearsals. It’s 100% stock, currently strung with D’addario Medium Chromes. I have also tried it with rounds and liked the sound a lot. If you fancy a change, I can include D’addario Medium rounds with the bass. The bass will come with the original Fender standard gig bag and all the tags (if you need them). I am mainly selling due to my interest shifting towards recording and mixing these days. Regarding trades, I am interested in studio monitors, a Mac Mini (M1 or M2 chip), cash both ways. I would be happy to meet in London for you to see the bass, can potentially travel outside of London as well. I can post or arrange a courier; I have the Fender double-box lying around. Thanks for looking!

  38. Thanks guys and Clarky, it certainly was a great score. 3below, it's spooky how our SG/Gibson experiences have been so similar. I took this rather fuzzy mirror shot, to show how the bass stays put, hands free. I'm using a a Lekato memory foam strap with it, at the moment, that has a matching leather stripe on it. Cool. Yeah, that mirror really needs straightening.

  43. Just finished a community panto, playing bass. What a blast, had a great time. Played three performances with my Acoustic Image Coda [AI], and three with the BC110T, for science. The BC112mk3 still isn't ready sadly. I think that from the audience's point of view the BC110T sounded better. There's definitely more welly in the lower bass frequencies what with it being a ported design, and there was no boom to tame with a HPF. There's one scene where I bow a low A pedal note, and through the BC110T came this wonderful powerful growl that I have never ever been able to achieve before. However, the praise isn't all one way traffic: the AI, because of its clever down-firing woofer and mid range speaker was much, much clearer to me, which is important when you need to hear yourself to tune. This is a community panto and in the "pit" there was enough room for me, the cabinet/amp and a cup of tea. Thus, the speakers were around 2 feet behind me at ground level and served as both monitors and the only bass amplification for the room (seating capacity around 80). I'm sure I was vibrating teeth out in the front row, but I couldn't always hear myself. The AI is much smaller, although in this instance it has points deducted for that as I couldn't place my mug of tea on top of it. Next year if I'm asked back, I'll hopefully have the mk3 so I can bikeshed with even more cabinets

Just finished another 3-show week. Every show has been packed and crowd always stays till we finish. Then we have a rough time loading out because everyone feels they need to talk to us. Anyhoo. Off today. Rehearsal tomorrow. Off Tuesday. Then gang busters again with gigs Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I've forgotten how to sleep.
