  2. For sale an AVRI '62 jazz bass from 1992. I bought the bass from another player because I love this colour combination and this particular bass has some wonderful mojo. Not the artificial kind - the real, played a lot, lived a lot kind. There's an indent above the rear pickup where someone's thumbnail has dug in for gig after gig. There's a belt rash patch on the rear and a fine selection of dings on the bottom edge. The bass itself feels and plays brilliantly. The pups are loud and expressive and the lovely, dark fingerboard feels effortless. The bass is wearing Thomastik Infeld flats with plenty of life in them. The hardcase is not a Fender case, but is sturdy and in reasonable shape. This was the bass - to use the cliche - I thought I'd never sell, but I've discovered DB and don't want to play anything else (until I do and will have to buy another electric. Sigh). Serial number is V059014. The bass is in South Somerset, but I do come up to London fairly frequently so I could bring it to central London. Obviously I'd prefer the buyer to try it before they collect it, but if that's impossible I'm open to the idea of getting a bass box and letting them organise a courier collection. This really is a lovely bass, hope someone gives her a good home. NB: is it all orginal? I believe so, but haven't owned it from new. There's nothing that looks like a replacement part to my eyes. Weight? circa 3.9kg on the kitchen scales. Frets? Great condition. No trades thanks.

  3. Up for sale is this Sandberg VM5, bought in 2017. These cost £1,500 - £1,700 new. This is in as good condition as you could reasonably expect for a 2nd hand bass, and going for £1000.00 + postage. It's spent most of it's life hanging on my wall, no gigging or dings, just the usual minor scuffs on the scratchplate. It's active with a passive mode by pulling up on the volume knob. It has a blend knob along plus treble/bass contour knobs with a central default notch. Comes with a gig bag and if posted will be packed in the original packing box. I'm based in Newcastle upon Tyne but will be going down to the midlands soon in case a meetup is preferred. It'll be sent in it's gig bag plus the original packing container it arrived in.

  5. I’ve met a few heroes over the years and been lucky that they were all pleasant and easy to get on with. For example, I’ve been presented with guitars that I won in competitions by bot Steve Howe and Gordon Giltrap - two of my three favourite guitar players (never met Gary Moore). Got to know Gordon over the years; such a lovely guy. But my most treasured hero moment was meeting Phil Lynott after a gig at the Cornwall Coliseum on their farewell tour in 1983. After the 83, as usual, I was hanging around in the empty hall waiting for my dad to pick me up (it was a 25 minute drive from home) and watching the crew breaking down the gear. Phil wandered out on stage (a little wobbly) carrying a huge, half finished vodka bottle. He spotted me standing in the middle of the empty auditorium and shouted over, asking if everything was OK. I said “Sure, just waiting for my dad, and watching the crew break down. It’s alright, he’ll be here in about a quarter of an hour.” So he said, “Well come up here and we’ll wait.” I climbed over the barrier and he and a roadie helped me up onto the stage. So we spent the next 15 or 20 minutes sitting on Brian’s drum riser just chatting until my dad turned up. Of course I asked him if he was really splitting up the band and if he had plans for what he’d do next. The answer to the first was, of course, “Yes.” And the second just got a wink, a tap of the finger on the side of the nose and “I’ve got a few ideas!” Then we sat here just shooting the breeze with our legs dangling off the riser. At one point he accidentally kicked my leg as he was swinging his legs and spent a couple of minutes apologising profusely in the way only happily tipsy people can do. At one point Scott poked his head out, spotted us and quickly retreated backstage. Eventually dad showed up at the other end of the hall and I jumped down to get my lift home. We exchanged a little wave as I went out the rear doors and he wandered back stage. What a lovely guy he was!

  8. Hi, Up for sale here is my absolutely outstanding Peavey TL6 6 string bass. This was made in the USA in 1992, it is in close to mint condition, hardly any marks on it anywhere except a teeny little scuff on the very tip of the headstock and a little tarnishing to the hardware, other than that it is in remarkable condition for its age. I'm only listing this as I have a powerful case of GAS for a bass being sold here! If that bass sells, then this is being withdrawn. It sounds unbelievably good - the action is nice and low and the strings are only a month or so old. It's 34" scale. The tone can be anything from super articulate HiFi to thunderous bass. The bridge is adjustable in all directions, it can be set at 15.5mm spacing up to just a hair under 18mm spacing (which is where it is now). The trans-red colour looks quite stunning with the gold hardware and light flame maple. It has a thick ebony fretboard and mother of pearl inlays. All in this bass is an absolute tone machine, in exceptionally good condition and with its original hard case. You genuinely will not find a better condition example of one of these basses (and yes I've read many a description that claims that, but in this case it is true - if you want to come view it to verify, you are welcome!) I'm based in Wickford, Essex and can post if really needed but I would prefer if it was collected or if we meet somewhere within say 50 miles of Wickford. Any questions, let me know.

  9. **SOLD STP** Up for sale is my stunning Warwick Corvette Std. Special Edition. Built in 2009 this bass is number 06 form a very limited production run of only 64pcs! The bass has a very thick gorgeous Bubinga Pomelle top on a swamp ash body and is finished with Warwick's natural oil finish. Like all German-made Warwicks, this Corvette is a tone monster with outstanding build quality and it is a joy to play. Combine a lighter weight body with a super fast neck and a powerful Seymour Duncan Basslines pickups boosted by an MEC 2 band active EQ, and you have a killer bass that cuts through the mix like butter and can hold its own in any music genre. This bass is finished in a natural oil finish that really highlights the beautiful grain of the Bubinga Pomelle. This bass is very clean, but there are a few very small scratches and dings that I have tried to show prominently in the the last 2 photos of the bass - this is not due to neglect - just because the ash body wood is rather soft. The bass functions perfectly – this includes the truss rod, hardware and electronics. The bass is all original except for the wiring from the pickups to the balance potentiometer. This wiring has been upgraded to high quality silver plated 6N OFC copper to provide even more clarity and definition - as you will see from the final photo, it has been very well executed and the wiring is neat and tidy. This Special Edition Warwick Corvette Std. comes with a brand new, non-orginal, ABS hard case to keep it safe during shipping! Serial number: d149944-09 Article number: 0244SX0000CZABUOWW produced: 02.04.2009 Description: CO Corvette Std, 4-string Natural Oil finish Swamp Ash/ Bubinga top body Ovangkol neck Chrome hardware Made in Germany WEIGHT:4,5Kg/9.92lbs The bass is located in 56281, Emmelshausen, Germany. 10. My 2023 board update. Went from Metro 16 to Mono lite. Replaced my Tone Hammer, Guma Antique Drive and MXR Vintage Bass Octave to a B7K ultra, OC-2 and a Proton V2. No regrets! Also explored putting my compressor before the DI which is last in my chain and the octaver and filtered signal is more responsive to my style of playing. I usually put the compressor right after the tuner then octaver and filter. Love what this thing sounds!

  11. New bass day! I thought I'd revive this thread rather than start a new one, since this it where it belongs! I've had 3 Spectors before, a Legend 4, a Q4 Pro and a Legend Custom. All fine basses, but nothing special and I've ended up moving them on. I've always wanted to try a Euro but couldn't justify the price or they didn't suit my bands at the time. I saw PMT had this Spector EuroBolt 4 in Inferno Red in their sale, £700 cheaper than it's original price. I couldn't resist! It's got a very wide neck compared to what I'm used to, but a comfortable profile and it's nice and light (my bathroom scales show 7.4lbs), so I'm sure I'll be able to get used to it. A couple of issues - there's a mark which appears to be under the finish on the top horn, and two cracks in the finish at the neck join - perhaps screwed in too tightly? Other than that it all looks good. But why couldn't they make the electronics cover flush with the body, they are on the Korean made ones. Looking forward to plugging it in this evening and seeing how the Aguilar pickups and preamp compare to the EMG HZs I've had in the others.

  12. Welcome @Wellsyboy, I'd recommend that you simply listen to the music you like and pay attention to the bass parts. The likes of Jaco, genius though he was, are not a great starting point for a study of bass, there's are some amazing bass parts hidden in some otherwise quite ordinary songs. Good luck 👍

  13. My small pedalboard. The Cioks doesn't fit under the pedalboard and I am trying to find a solution. My MXR Poly Blue is waiting its room in the FX loop. My Ashdown OriginAL and Markbass Vintage Pre are used sporadically when I have to use a lot of synth effects.

  16. Our "Almost Acoustic" set in Stoke on Saturday. A tiny venue and totally sold out. I have a bass drum, snare, hats and a cymbal. I'm not sure the reason for it but it's good fun. Our bassist switches to his acoustic bass which is 5 string, and it's so nice to have the extra low notes. I sometimes wish he'd go back to his 5 string Bass Collections but he loves his Fender P. We played 1.5 hours but it was so chilled out I barely broke a sweat. Apologies for the terrible photo, I only took it to show off my cymbal to a mate. Rock City on the main stage as part of the Beat The Streets festival. We've done other stages at this festival a few times and it's always good, but to be back on at my favourite venue was a real treat. Awesome sound as always. A full on 30 minutes set. I had no time to warm up, broke two sticks, and had to fight through cramp, but it was a bit more exciting than the "acoustic" set. I was drenched!

Basically I write the set list slightly wrong , ask everyone else for comments , ignore those comments but rewrite the set list as I wanted it in the first place - tell everyone it's now much better for their input and accept their grateful thanks.

  19. G&L Tribute Series Kiloton 4 string bass guitar, in Olympic White. Has been gigged but not extensively, so is in good condition, with only some very minor marks which obviously do not detract from its playability. Could do with some new strings too. Some blurb from G&L: The Kiloton bass boasts a lean and comfortable body that's paired with a fast, satin-finished Maple neck — providing superb playability. Driven by a beefy MFD ('Magnetic Field Design') humbucker wired in G&L's USA factory, the Kiloton pumps out big and bold tones. However, the pickup is placed in a tonal "sweet spot" near the bridge, which gives it a more pronounced upper mid-range peak that's perfect for penetrating through a busy band mix. The Magnetic Field Design humbucker uses a ceramic bar magnet, with soft iron pickup poles, and have been designed to give you a quieter pickup than what you'd normally get with Alnico magnets, but at the same time they give you a greater overall output. Tonally, MFD pickups are slightly warmer than their alnico counterparts, whilst offering a much broader frequency response. In addition to this you get a 3-way toggle switch that allows you to alter the humbucker's circuitry between Series, Split, and Parallel modes, putting a nice array of tone-changing options at your disposal. The Saddle-Lock Bridge helps transfer your string's energy directly through the body, giving you an incredible amount of natural body resonance, resulting in a clear and balanced tone. I have also added a thumb rest for better hand positioning. I am based on the Isle Of Wight so am willing to meet at one of our four ferry ports (Portsmouth/Southampton/Southsea/Lymington), but I'm reluctant to post via courier as they all seem to be unreliable at the moment. These currently sell for upwards of £400 so I'm asking for £320 £300, cash on collection or PayPal. Thanks for looking. ***EDIT: I'M NOW CONSIDERING SHIPPING*** I'll have to source a suitable box and a $h1t load of bubble wrap, plus I'll remove the neck to reduce possible damage. Royal Mail 24 or 48 hour tracked for an extra £10 (UK ONLY).

  20. Hi everyone, I feel it's about time to introduce myself - I signed up 10 years ago to buy at the marketplace what is my main axe ever since (an absolutely stunning custom shop Gibson Thunderbird) from user @lamp(Hi Nick! Great you're still around here! 🙂 maybe you remember your ex-Gibbo...?! 😉 ) I am born an live in Munich and play bass for something like 20 years or so (without having it learned yet tough 😉 ) in a Munich based Skaband. I have a soft point for Thunderbirds, so I 'had to' buy @krispns D-Bird a couple of weeks ago.😁 GAS never sleeps, as ya all know.... This is what it looks like when we play a local Irish Pub: Here are my basses (the Spector ist sold, stupid me): Left to right: Status Empathy, LTD Viper 414, Gibson Thunderbird, Italia Maranello, self-built 'Ray'nBird', Epiphone T-Bird-body with Status Stingray neck, Hohner B2B and Specor LX5 (sold☹️) Cheers! 21. I'm dipping my toe in the water here. I saw this back in October and was pretty much taken straight away. Went and bought it. It's an amazing bass to play, fantastic range of sounds from the Delano pickups and two band eq with passive option. You'll either love or hate the aesthetics of it. The body is a greatest hits of four of Sandberg's finest finishes. My personal highlight being the heavily distressed Sherwood Green (?) section. The attention to detail is fantastic with the bell plate changing from chrome to gold as appropriate. So in terms of electronics, it's fitted with a pair of Delano pickups, the bridge pickup having a single/dual coil switch. Pull the volume pot out and the preamp is bypassed with the treble control changing to a passive treble roll off. Comes with the original Sandberg gig bag and a comfort strap with Dunlop strap-locks. I love this bass but I think it's just a bit flamboyant for me. I'm used to a Stingray for 5 string jobs and at a gig the other night I took both and the Stingray won out. So I'm testing the water here, not desperate to sell but I'm thinking some one else will suit this better. If anyone wants to trade for a Stingray 5, we might be able to thrash something out. Meet up or collection only I'm afraid, as it has no hard case.

  22. I recently joined here as a rookie bass player. I have played guitar for 50 years and have recently discovered the wonders of bass. Only gigging I ever did were pubs and small functions, weddings etc. I am serious about getting good! I love Blues, Rock blues, classic rock, R & B (of all kinds but mostly Stax Motown etc.)some new wave and punk stuff. I also like some jazz but more so the melodic stuff rather than the avant grade "intellectual" stuff - if it gets too busy it loses me. My question for all you fabulous people is - who should I listen to? I dipped my toe into a bit of Jaco on you tube but quickly pulled my toe out again (of course I haven't given him a fair shake so might need more specific direction with him please). Pino I enjoyed very much and of course I am totally familiar with Duck Dunn and Tommy Shannon. Sting I like very much. Never cared for the Who but might give them another try to listen to Entwistle. I caught a Bubby Lewis clinic on you tube and he was interesting but not sure. The problem with bassists (as a guitar player listening to music) is that you're never very interested in who the bass player is (until now). I will of course go back over my extensive record collection and have a relisten to the bass players - that's a given - but I would appreciate some pointers to help me along the way. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Steve

  24. Hey, all. I wanted a 2 channel distortion whereby i could use one for some overdrive and one for heavy distortion. I really like moose's work and he works about 500m from me, so i asked him if he could combine two of his pedals into one enclosure. This is his sundrive and his sledgehammer. I literally just picked it up. Gonna give it a workout tonight, but of course i had to post it online first.

  29. I started off learning and practising bass to the songs from bands I like - alas, as a confirmed prog-head I found a lot of it intimidating and difficult to master and, more importantly, hard to use in the cover songs the band I was in were playing, which was not a prog band. For a new band project I recently started listening to songs I'd originally dismissed for various reasons (Abba and disco in general, funk and modern dance). While they aren't my favourite genres, they certainly have great bass lines that are interesting and satisfying to play and also taught me a number of bassic (yes) techniques, licks and runs that have improved my playing and make it into the songs we're doing. In other words, regardless of your preferred style, listen to any and all of the suggestions above and (no doubt) below to get a good grounding in bass technique.

  31. You'll get a bazillion different answers... but as far as what I did to get the ball rolling... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beatles-Complete-Scores-Transcribed-Score/dp/0793518326/ref=asc_df_0793518326/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=310081590442&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3500387670720029362&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007151&hvtargid=pla-525453688488&psc=1&th=1&psc=1 And played a long. Did a number of things, got me into reading the notes (although tab is included if it's not your thing). Got me understanding melody in bass - Paul McC is a master on this front. I don't play anything like Paul McC now - and got very much into techniques and expanding my trickbag I guess... but that was a super solid starting point. Nowadays, I think the players that I more gravitate towards are the likes of James Jamerson, Nate Watts, and say, folk like Bernard Edwards... but that melodic approach can still be traced backed to those early days battling through Paul's basslines. And then there's the stuff that I have focused on which pushes the technique... but is ultimately quite useless in most band situations. Of course, getting into transcribing your fave stuff and how you want to play really helps develop you.

  42. Not seen these before. I'm very put off by the string having to wind around a cam inside the bridge (replicating the behaviour of a conventional tuner) which is giving me flashbacks to this illogical, ill-conceived and overengineered thing on a cheapo bass I picked up a while back. Have a read; The second listing has head-end string clamps which would make it marginally more practical, but the fact it comes with a tiny string-cranky handle (that you'd definitely never lose!) doesn't exactly telegraph ease-of-use!

  43. I did try. It is incredible how thumpy they are despite the low gauge and I find roundcore strings very expressive. But the G was not really working for me. I have not written them off completely. It seems sometimes Labella roundcore have issues and you get a slight "sitar" effect. Maybe there was an element of that in my set. Maybe not. But before trying a new set of LTF, I have another plan. I do not remember that well how TI flats sounded in my hands. I moved on to other strings as I did not find them thumpy enough (plus other stuff). I do not remember having issues with the G though. After watching this video I concluded that old TIs can thump! I asked the guy and he had his strings on for at least 12 years😁 I have a Squier P with Tonerider and no strings on, waiting for a fret dressing and then I'll put some TIs on, hoping I like the G. Hopefully I won't have to wait 12 years for some thump! I read somewhere that a year could do

  44. I have to say, the band I joined just over a year ago had been going for ten years with the singer and drummer. Lead guitarist joined at some point way before me. It was made clear to me that they have a solid set of songs they play for an upcoming gig but that they always look to add and change. They don't do anything from before the year 2000 unless requested for a wedding or private party. You have to come to rehearsals familiar with a song that's been set to learn, it's not a 'start from scratch'. I quite liked having these rules, everyone knows where they are. I also said on joining "you guys have been going ten years and have a great reputation locally, I'll just slot in, I'm not here to take over or force you to play Pearl Jam B sides" and we get on perfectly. I suggest songs regularly but I'm never in a huff if we don't do them. I have a go at playing songs I don't like, tonight I've got to do a One Direction song. It will have some industrial sounding fuzz and octave in the bassline, because I want to and I'll do it in a way that keeps me amused but doesn't ruin the song. That's the way I find works, compromise all over, don't get emotional about your choices. It is annoying when you get one person who won't even have a go at something they don't like even though it fits your set, they're usually the ones who want the band to play their own personal "mix tape" of favourite songs, they don't think about the audience, just themselves.

  46. Imagine if you built a body from one of the planks. Nobody would ever care.

  47. Put the below together for some heavier sounds, although will also work as a more generic ‘fly-board’ thanks to the versatility of the HX Stomp. The DIY pedal on the left is a JMK Big Bass Drive I built a while ago, aside from an LED I need to fix, it actually sounds pretty awesome. I have something else planned for that first drive space though, just waiting for it to arrive back with me (tis out on loan). As always, CIOK doing the heavy lifting here! Si

  48. Nick Beggs also toured with Steve Hackett. Playing anything from an SSD and Ric to a Chapman stick. Sounded pretty excellent to me.
