I remember we had albums by folk like Max Bygraves and Val Doonican and my Dad was a huge fan of the Black and White Minstrels - in fact it was probably seeing the Black and White Minstrels on telly that sparked me into wanting to be an entertainer of some sort. I remember thinking how brilliant it must be to be on a stage making people happy like they did. There was another thing though. The Sound of Music. My Mum loved it - saw the movie several times including dragging me off to see it when I was about 6. Played the album over and over. I hated it with a passion I can't properly describe and it was forever banished to the far corners of my mind ! A few years back it was on telly at Christmas. From the second it started to the final credits I sat there knowing every line from every song fighting back tears and thinking of my Mum. Clearly all those tunes have remained in my brain all these years and as a result what influence must they have had on me as a musician ? Where the sentimentality sprang from I don't know but - as the saying goes - sentimentality if for those who want the luxury of real emotion but cant afford it.6 points

I very recently acquired a fantastic 20th anniversary series ABM 600. Using it mainly for my heavy rock covers band. What a great head, especially when twined with my Super Twin cab. I also not long ago picked up an Ashdown Studio 12 combo (for my jam nights). A few days later I saw on eBay that someone was selling a studio 12 combo (minus the amp) so I took a punt on it. Yesterday I finally I got around to fixing it. Added a dual speakon jack socket, moved the feet and grill badge as I need it turned 90 degrees for the combo to sit squarely on top. So now have a modular combo rig too. It stands even taller than the 600/super twin set up.4 points

Serial number says it was built April 1994. Is like it's time warped forward twenty five years, barely a blemish on it. Band practice cancelled this evening so time to play with new toys instead!4 points

That's my old bass. A bit of backstory. I bought it in Lewisham 1980/81...£375.00, so about a month's salary. It had a bit of an issue with the fingerboard and the wood was lifting a bit between the nut and the third/fourth fret on the E-string side. I took it to a luthier in Kingston who built baroque instruments and had formulated a method of adhering wood to metal, but there seemed to be an issue with the aluminium not being machined 100% (there was a shallow dip...a fraction of a millimetre) so the wood was never going to adhere properly, if that makes sense. He put a fretless ebony board on it. I didn't like the bridge at all so he installed a Badass and glued in two small strips of ebony to fill in the gap in the body (these are visible in the photo below). New brass nut. I used it as a fretless for a while and then took it to (the late) Richard Knight in Addlestone and had it refretted. I kept it for a few more years...it didn't get much use and traded it in at ABC music in Addlestone for something else (I'm too ashamed to say what). I often wondered what came of it and saw that it appeared on the Travis Bean database a few years back. I seem to recall that the owner posted up somewhere seeking a replacement original bridge. The bass appeared on eBay in 2015/16 so I assume your dad bought it. I know it was in Oxford at one point; I was playing the Bullingdon in Oxford one night and I had a few email exchanges with the owner who offered to bring it along to the gig so I could use it for our 30 minute set. Didn't show up, sadly. Anyhow, here's two photos. You can make out the figuring on the body, but it looks a lot redder in your photo. The other shot is of me and my best mate when we were doing early live sessions for Virgin at The Townhouse in Shepherds Bush. I forget who we were playing with...it was a signed duo of guitarists, a white guy and a black guy who had inked a deal with Virgin, Hugh Padgham was supposed to have been producing. No idea what happened! [Edit]. I mentioned to Gabriel by PM that I have photos the luthier took when the original fretboard was off. I'll try and find them and get them scanned in.4 points

Been on hold for a while as I noticed a bit of an odd crackle (not much but annoying). All sorted now though. Turns out there was nothing wrong with it 😂 After reorganising my home studio equipment, the noise has gone. It never happened at rehearsals either, only in my home studio. Fabulous and famous Trace Elliot bone crushing silly loud 280w head. Hybrid valve - solid state. All in great shape in a carpeted sleeve. This can be removed and the amp can be racked (you'd need the rack ears though. I had it racked using a rack shelf) All works as it should. Only up for sale as I need a lightweight spare. This is far too good to be kept as a spare too. Px or trade for a light weight bass head. MB, Elf, Gnome etc. Try me with anything music related. You never know. Collection much preferred from BB22SH or a courier can be arranged by the buyer at their own cost and risk. It will be well packaged though.3 points

For sale *NOW £190** Not sure of the actual model or build region but it is an RSB shape. In very nice candy apple red with matching headstock. Single p pickup with a single volume and an active 3 band eq gives a pretty heafty output and a full range of tones. Bridge is an upgrade on the original and is a modern badass variant. 3 piece maple neck and nice dark rosewood board with 24 frets. Nut is 38mm width and spacing is 19mm at the bridge. The body has a very sculpted heel making the dusty end easily accessible. Finished off with through body stringing making a very classy bass. There are some dings on the body which I have shown in the pictures but otherwise condition is very good. Any questions I'll try to answer best poss. Postage Included to UK 🇬🇧.3 points

This is a top quality bass, both in build quality and tone, it sounds phenomenal. Excellent condition apart from a tiny ding at the back of the strap button at the bottom of the bass. Can barely be seen up close. I have upgraded the bass with the following - Norstrand NP4a pickups/CTS pots/Switchcraft jack/WD Black 3 ply scratch plate/tug bar. Set up by the man himself...Mr Jon Shuker and is very easy to play all up the fretboard. Ernie Ball Super Slinky 45/60/80/100 strings fitted. Sorry I don't have the original parts as I really didn't intend selling this bass. Comes with the original fender gig bag in great condition. Absolutely any trial welcome. Sorry no trades thanks. New central heating boiler has forced the unfortunate sale. I really don't want to courier this bass due to no packaging/bad experience, so pick up preferred but would drive to meet up with petrol cost. Thanks for looking.3 points

Beautiful Ovation Magnum IV Bass from the late Seventies, Mahogany Body, very comfortable and straight as an arrow neck, selected ebony fretboard, the frets were serviced and the bass plays great all across the board, active electronics with plenty of sound options with a great looking 3Band EQ, great playability with very low action, one extra hole for a second strap button was drilled by the original owner and there is surface crackle on the pick guard around the input jack - other than that there are only playing marks that are normal for a vintage instrument, Magnum Basses are unique and high quality instruments, I am letting this one go because I have switched to playing upright bass, The beautiful Ovation Case is included as well, This is a private sale with no warranty or returns accepted, Instrument is located in Vienna, Austria, Please feel free to contact me for additional pics or info. I expect this uses the same hardware as the Harley Benton jaco-alike fretless, within a week of getting one I both rehearsed and gigged it. Meaning I used this for a whole gig, under lights and hammering away at the strings with my fingers and pick, drop D tuning it a few times... There's nothing wrong with the tuners. It needs new strings, but the tuners are fine. There are lighter tuners, more expensive tuners, ones that feel nicer. But be under no illusion, these work: you can use them to tune the strings and they stay in tune as good as most.3 points

All the information you could possibly need is here: https://www.waynejonesaudio.com/products-specs/wjbp-stereo-bass-pre-amp/ There’s a gushing but accurate review from Scott here too - well worth a listen on decent cans if you have the time: The basic details (from WJ's website) are: Input 1/4” phono stereo/mono jack Input Gain For both Passive & Active basses -10 Db pad Input Gain clip Indicator LEDS (top left corner) Tone controls are critically set by Wayne & are extremely accurate in the attack points of each string. You can set them by one for each string on your bass All +15Db -20 Db Incredible separation between the tone controls There is also a 30 Hz boost for those that may like it ( not really needed at all as the Bass control gives such a great bottom end with ultimate attack). In/out button for selection Compressor: Optical, automatically senses & is very effective even with a very small amount engaged. In/out button for selection Balance: This is a balance control for stereo operation e.g. 2 WJ 2x10 or Stereo WJ 1x10 Powered cabs. Master volume Controls output Pre-Amp Output Indicator LEDS (top right corner) tell you if you are overloading the WJBP output Mute - Puts the WJBP in standby mode. LED Indicates when in use. The Mute mode should also be used for power up of the WJ Powered cabs, otherwise a very loud 1000watts will sound when WJ Powered cab (or separate power amp) is turned on. It also operates the built in Tuner. For standard tuning for 4, 5 & 6 string basses Foot switch mutes all output for silent tuning. I have all original packaging with the rack-mounting kit and power supply. I don't have the footswitch The pre is in as new condition, apart from a very small (really tiny - maybe 1-2mm) mark on top on the unit. This was caused by one of the rack ears falling from the packaging as I opened the box! I've re-touched it with a tiny smear of matte acrylic and the re-touch isn't really visible unless one inspects very closely. I'll tape the ears into the packaging. There are reviews all over for these and the latter are uniformly positive. A really high-end and beautifully thought-through pre. I'm only selling as it sounds almost identical to my Hellborg pre and the latter is already sat in my rig. The WJ is extremely precise, though warm and musical. The one-knob compressor is an absolute joy, though I hardly ever use any compression. Weight is 2.41kg. Price is firm - this is a lovely and very expensive unit in perfect functional condition, and almost (really!) cosmetic condition. I checked this morning and purchase price of a new pre directly from WJ is £1107 (including shipping, VAT and duty). Collection from Manchester is good, though I can ship at cost at the buyer's expense and risk (I can include insurance if required). Any questions, please just ask.3 points

I think I did a NBD thread last year sometime, but since this thread has been revived, I thought I would post an update. In a strange twist of fate, I was told that one of these Chick Rainey PJ’s was up for sale. After speaking with the seller and asking for the obligatory ‘more photos please’, it turned out the bass that he was selling was not only the same spec as above, but it was actually the same bass that he had bought from Bass Direct which I where I lifted this photo from. The seller said he had hardly played it and when I received it, it was indeed in pristine condition. I could find no evidence of it actually being played at all. What a lovely bass it is too. Far too good not to be played. Strange how these things turn out.3 points

A hole is a port. A hole with a tube or extension behind it is a ducted port. Over the decades the 'ducted' part of the name has been dropped from common usage. A hole is still technically a ducted port, with the duct length being the thickness of the panel it goes through. The longer the duct the smaller the port will be and the smaller the cab may be for a given tuning frequency. The smaller the port the higher the velocity of the air vibrating within it. With sufficient velocity you can hear that air mass vibrating, so there is a point where it can be too small. Your cab may be fine, it may not, which can be determined with the exact cab dimensions and the driver specs.3 points

Original build was with TDA8932 . Mk2 was built with TPA3118 which is 60W at 24v into 4ohm . I think it was 35w at 18v into 8ohm . On recommendation from contributors , mk2 was built with fused power supply . Output is bridge tied load so needs to be an insulated jack . I used my PJB HA1 as a preamp and later the Hotone nano bass . Now I use it straight from the bass as it appears not to need a preamp . Here are a few photos .3 points

Outside of the home, my parents’ friends had a son, who was a fair bit older than me. He had long hair and played guitar and I thought he was the coolest person ever, the fact that their neighbour was Larry Wallace of, at the time, UFO and later Motörhead and The Pink Fairies did nothing to lessen this impression, even though I didn’t know who UFO were (they used to practise next door too, you could hear them through the walls). It wasn’t UFO that I remember, however, it was the records in the aforementioned sons’ collection, notably Four Way Street by CSN&Y and Hot August Night by Neil Diamond. It was these records and their owner that inspired me to pick up the guitar; I’ll still often bash out Teach Your Children for posterity’s sake (it was the first song I ever learnt, albeit incorrectly).3 points

Yes - a well presented sequence and should, on most basses, get you down to a 'normal decent' action height. However, @roger has thrown the gauntlet not only onto the floor, but down the spiral staircase of the castle's turret He's asking about 'the lowest possible action'. And for that, the fretwork has to be as near perfect as possible. So - it all depends on the bass, the strings and, more importantly, the playing style but - my definition of a very low action on a 4 string bass (measured with a capo on the 1st fret to eliminate the nut and measured from fret top to bottom of string at the 12th fret) is around 0.75mm on the G and around 1mm for the other three. Much lower and the amplitude of the actual string vibration in places is likely to greater than the gap between the string and the fret and the bass will sound more like a sitar. To achieve that, then, as @Bigguy2017 says, the frets have to be 'rocker level flat' at all 164 positions and there needs to be no 'ski jump' at the upper frets whatsoever. In fact, for very low actions, the final 6-7 frets should ideally be levelled to give a moderate fall-away. The reason for this is that under string tension, the neck bends upwards...but the length from the beginning of the neck pocket can't bend - and so it becomes more like a rising ramp (hence the ski-jump term). Because the actions on basses tend to be higher than on guitars, most basses won't suffer this - but for low actions, they might well do so.3 points

As if you needed more persuasion.... For a long time my only bass was a five string fretless. And I played classic rock, Black Sabbath etc with it and though I couldn't clank the strings I didn't have to mwah it all over the place, it was just "bass". We played one or two Pearl Jam songs though and the reverb and chorus were on and it was mwah all over! It was a fretless Kramer which is now over twenty years old, I don't think you'll find one easily and if you did you might not like the styling, it's an acquired taste! I now have five basses. My most recent acquisition is the Harley Benton jaco-alike fretless jazz. For £150 brand new it is excellent. I have had two Sire basses (still got one of them, V9 fretted 5) and my Thomann wishlist has the V5 fretless in it... Just do it. What do you lose? You buy a bass you can resell, you spend some time scratching an itch. What do you gain? A new bass that does something your existing basses can't, a new technique, a new way to express yourself. I always find new, different, basses encourage me to make different note choices, you will discover something guaranteed. Even if that discovery is "I like fretless, just when other people play it".3 points

Dean B Squared / B2 - no longer active with a piezo bridge. Standard bridge and now passive V V T T, with different knobs. Pickup selector. Chrome knob does nothing as it's where the Piezo vol was. Obviously can be re-activated with a normal preamp if desired, as the battery box is intact Couple of small marks. Original brass nut Plays very well, truss is fine, frets are all level, no string buzz. No hard case, collection only, or if anyone fancies arranging postage themselves, i can pack it well. I have found a specialist guitar / instrument courier, and no need for a hard case for insurance. They're the only ones i know that do this but they're not cheap £55 for a bass. So i have no probs posting this and i will share the cost 50/50 so the bass will only be £227.50 posted2 points

I think that there are many of us in similar situations - lots of gear, no band, reduced motivation. Personally I'm keeping my gear for as long as I can afford to - my nest egg as most of my pensions are rubbish. Chances of me selling the gear at a profit is more likely than any of the pensions yielding something worth talking about. Also I get to play instruments that I enjoy..2 points

I've had a brief message exchange with kiwi and ped about (perhaps) setting up a sub-forum here to ease the inevitable questions when you're playing a new venue. I'm playing a few new venues in the next two or three months; there's just no information about where to park, loading in etc. My suggestion would be simply to have an area with subdivisions (England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland/Isle of Man/Channel Islands) and within this Counties (Avon/Bedfordshire etc.) and then towns therein. I know we're never going to be able to hit every venue in every town, but there's certainly going to be venues where several of us will have played previously. The idea being to provide a definitive listing of venues, primary contacts, ease of load-in, local parking, venue type (club/theatre/toilet), capacity, music style etc. In my head, it should heavily moderated...this wouldn't be a place for long discussions about your gigging experience or slagging off the venue, just the fundamentals. It might help getting you gigs at these places too. Any interest? Paul2 points

I was stuck between basses recently and needed to do some recording and all I had was my Jaco Jazz so I used that and that was the beginning of using it a lot more. I learnt Sledgehammer the other day just because it was fretless it was a quick 5 minutes I grabbed before cooking dinner and thought I really must play more fretless, warning, you will end up liking it more than fretted.2 points
