  1. A few years back I importedt an old '64 P bass in bits and in quite a sorry state. The previous owner had been able to afford a neck refinish from John Kallas (owner of JohnK Vintage Guitars who's built or restored some crazy amount of instruments over the years!). However, he ran out of money and offered it as a parts bass to get it finished. When he first bought it, the entire neck & body had been stripped back & finished some sort of horrible, slightly sticky to the touch, lacquer: Here's how it arrived to me in it's original, but totally knackered, case: I contacted a few people about refinishing the body but quotes were either really high or they didn't want to take it on given how nasty the existing finish was. Then, one day, I was chatting to my good friend, and local luthier, Julian Mullen. I mentioned that I wasn't sure what to do with this albatross and he took a look at it. He had actually closed the refinishing part of his business because it was too time consuming and a pain in the donkey to try and run a paint shop. He had a good look and confirmed that everything definitely appeared to be original and that the first colour would have been Olympic White as you can see the overspray in the pickup and wiring cutouts. He then said he had just one pack of genuine US nitro paint kicking around in his workshop and it just happened to be Olympic White - it then became a bit of a challenge for him and he decided to take it on. One of the first things he discovered, having stripped away the lacquer, was that the body was a little thinner than it should be for a '64 but that he could rebuild it up using a few more layers of paint than usual. This was no easy job as it required several coats of primer and nitro with full sanding down between each one. ules is something of a perfectionist and carried this out over a long period, making sure it was completely dry and ready between every coat. He then fitted all the parts that came with it, pickguard & pickups not show in the pic above. After all this work, this is how it looks now, I couldn't be happier: All pics taken on my phone so apologies for the quality. I've tried to show the true colour of the paint and this has darkened the board and guard a little. The guard is a lovely deep red tort and the board has some really nice dark grain running through it that almost looks like ebony (it will be brazilian rosewood). Hopefully you can see that the nitro is already checking nicely and the neck has begun to do this as well (the neck was refinned back in 2011 so it's had a good 10 years to 'catch up' with the body finish). It should now continue to age gracefully

  2. For sale or trade. A great P Bass, made by The Bass Centre, created in collaboration with Attractions bassist Bruce Thomas. You can read the story of its creation here . It seems to be very well regarded by many people on this forum. I bought this from this site in May 2021 as I was getting back into playing. Including myself it’s had at least three careful owners. It’s a great playing and sounding P Bass, but I’ve hardly played it with since I got a Mustang for Christmas 2021. So I am looking to switch this out for something different. It still has the the flats it arrived with. There are screw holes for an “ash tray” bridge cover, which I took off but still have and will include with the sale. Happy with sale or trade. For trade, I’d consider anything short or medium scale, with cash going in either direction. Top of my wish list would be SS Sterling Sting Ray, G&L Tribute Fallout or Pawn Shop Mustang. Collection or meet-up only (unless it doesn’t sell for a few months). Happy to meet up in South Wales, along the M4. I also have occasional work trips to Bristol, central London and Milton Keynes. I’ve weighed it on bathroom scales and I make it 4.5 kg Price reduced to £295 for collection/meetup. (Although I am now thinking I might keep it after a few goodbye noodles).

  3. SOLD Selling my Ampeg combo. I believe this is a late 80's / early 90's model, but happy to be corrected. It's a USA made 100 watt / 1x15 design, obviously based on the legendary valve model from a couple of decades earlier. 4 band EQ with push/pull, FX loop, balanced XLR DI with vol control, headphone socket, limit function etc etc. Speaker is 150 watt 4 ohm, so 100 good watts output as it is. Can be used as just a head into another cab too. It's in good condition for it's age, sounds fine with all controls working. Has the screw in pole which enables it to be tilted back too! Good for smaller gigs , rehearsal room or home use. Overall a usable funky thing that may even be collectable now or in the near future, as quite rare. Think the price is good, but let me know if you think otherwise!! Only selling as I need to free up some space. Got more pics if you need them - just PM me. Full spec here -https://ampeg.com/support/files/Discontinued User Manuals/B-15T/B15T_OM.pdf

  4. Part ex also considered towards sale, especially medium or short scale, try me ! Stunning Heavy Relic California VS4 in mint condition Spec: BODY Body wood Alder Color Marley Blue Hardcore Aged NECK Neck Maple Fingerboard Rosewood Frets 22 Fretsize 2.7 mm Strings 4 Headstock Matching Nut 39.5 mm Tuning Standard Position Inlays Mop block markers ELECTRONICS Pre amp Sandberg 2-band, active / passive, passive tone control Pickups Sandbergs Split Coil Hardware Chrome Bridge Spacing 19 to 20.5mm Here’s the Bass Buddha’s thoughts: “The VS4 is a P-bass on steroids! In Active Mode it’s a bass that’s more open and powerful than a normal P-bass, but when you play it in Passive Mode the sound turns into unmistakably classic P-bass with a beautiful sound that takes you back to the golden age of the 60s and 70s. The body construction is made of alder and the fingerboard is rosewood which makes it light and gives a very balanced tone throughout the whole frequency range. The neck is more narrow than a normal P bass, which makes it very comfortable and the tone just pops out at you with ease. The bass’ single pickup is a split-coil from Sandberg, which brings the bass alive no matter if you play active or passive. The preamp is Sandberg’s own 2-band EQ Active/Passive, which plays a pivotal part in that classic Sandberg sound. In the Active Mode, the preamp is Volume, Treble, Bass, while in Passive Mode it’s just Volume and Tone while the third is deactivated.”

  6. Got this today - I’ve been bass-curious about these since launch but was bit meh about colours. Anyways - I just noticed they’ve gone and put out my fave p combination- rosewood board, natural body with that neck. So instant trigger pull after an hour watching reviews. Now I see what the fuss is about. All necks should feel like this outta the box. Sweet and chunky but not baseball bat, smooth no sticky gloss pickups growl and seem pretty hot - need to check spec - body contour is sexy and bridge seems solid as are the heavy control knobs. Tuners are ok but probably wouldn’t swap them I wouldn’t say it’s a Fender killer - the Am Std I just sold was better but this reminds me if the 2018ish MIM FSR PB70 Reussue I had but with no sticky neck, better pups and half the price when you add £55 for la bellas to the £419 outlay If you’re looking for a P back up - I’d recommend this. Not had out loud yet but it’s a great deal - it feels much more premium than it’s price

  7. One in, one out. You know the score. Had this for a year, it's a fantastic bass but my '93 Sterling does all of this and more so it's up for grabs. It was made on the 5th of August 2010. All original, all working fine. A few battle scars to the body near the jack/control plate and a bit of buckle rash in the usual place. There is a little damage to the finish on the end of the headstock too, just cosmetic. It came with a couple of spare scratch plates in torty and grey pearloid. Musicman hard case too.

  8. Well it's kind of together again.. I couldn't find the black plastic card / sheet stuff to make a black scratchplate (I definitely have some, somewhere) so for now I just re used the original, after a bit of filing to modify a funny lumpy bit. Tbh the black would look cool, but the contrasting white keeps the classic Rick look going . Easy enough to make a black one, or indeed any other colour later if I fancy it I've put the orig PUs back in too just to get it back up and running, after the delays & messing with the bridge units etc I was keen to get it going again... I have a MM stingray PU stashed that I may put in place of the bridge jazz PU, obviously requiring a big hole carving in the top! .. the bassy ultra cheap n' nasty neck PU actually sounds OK for what it is so not to fussed about that. Getting a decent action will require more work tho it's playable ( I'm not one of those ultra fussy types either luckily!) I'm really not a fan of set necks, give me a bolt on any day. I reckon I'll be filing down some of the higher frets for sure. The wood used in the original bass is pretty poor I'd have to say, but hardly surprising considering the low price they were when new. Anyway its been a fun project so far and will no doubt evolve further as and when..

  11. A small festival in the middle of nowhere on Saturday night. A full on set 11-12. It was very warm and sweaty. This crowd are so supportive of the band, we could play absolutely terribly and still go down well. I can understand how that might undermine the motivation of some, but for me it just takes all the pressure off. I had a great time, and I managed to get home by 1:30 which was a lot earlier than I expected. 3 weeks off now

  12. Head £350 Cab £325 Rig £650 Finally looking to shift this monster rig after a few withdrawn ads in the past! Both in fully working order and VGC as shown on pics. I'm strictly 210 combo these days so too much power for me, not so much weight as this is a ridiculously light set up even with head + cab. The ShuttleMax comes in original packaging with footswitch and manual. The Neox is tolex rather than fuzzy covering. Happy to ship the amp in UK at buyer's arrangement/expense. Cab picked up localy ideally but will travel to meet reasonable distance from Cardiff. Either one may be used for input from the bass amp. Use these two inputs when 'daisy-chaining' 2 cabinets together. •Full Range Speakon® Input - We recommend using this input with the appropriate cable when connecting to a high powered bass amp - 400 watts or more. • Tweeter Level Control - This controls the amount of signal to the tweeter. We recommend starting with the control at 50%. Then balance the tweeter output to the cabinet's speaker output in combination with your instrument's pick-up tone and amplifier clarity. These popular cabinets also feature a unique “nubby” vinyl covering along with a new metal speaker grille. This creates a more contemporary look and more importantly, it adds increased durability. All models feature a compact compression tweeter with Ferro-fluid cooling for enhanced highs and a high power capacity crossover with a 100 watt tweeter level control. 13. €1100 EUR: Fender Precision Bass PB70-85, 1993, Japan, type B neck. NO TRADES! NON NEGOTIABLE PRICE ! Asking price including shipping fully insured with tracking number to your place in these European countries (ask for other countries) : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding French overseas departments and territories), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden : €1100 Euros (£975 GBP is an approximation and I will only accept payment in Euros) !!! Shipping to United Kingdom is, of course, possible, but with an extra customs fee (VAT + other taxes + courier fee), because U.K. is now outside EEC. In perfect working condition and in good condition with all the nicks of 30 years old bass (see photos for real condition). This is the best P-Bass I've ever owned in 40 years, but, hélas, I'm not a P-Bass guy... Here are the specifications : Body: light ash (probably swamp) Neck: bolt-on in 1 piece of very lightly flamed maple Fingerboard: beautiful rosewood Frets: 20 positions with absolutely no marks Headstock: 4 in line Pickups: 1 brand new Hepcat (best French vintage pickups maker) Precision Bass '62 (see invoice) Controls: volume (selected CTS), tone (selected CTS) with a Russian PIO capacitor and a PureTone output jack (see invoice) Tuners: original Fender Japan Bridge: original Fender Japan (70's) Strings spacing at bridge: 19 mm Nut: bone Strings spacing at nut: 11 mm (nut width is a B type, so 41.275 mm) Knobs: Fender flat dome (brand new) Scale: 34 inches Hardware colour: chrome Truss rod: one, single action, 100% functional Finish: Dark British Green over Vintage White Country of origin: Japan Serial number: N079873 Year: 1993 Weight: 4.120 kg (naked) Action : from 1.5 mm under the G string to 2 mm under the E string at 12th position (can even go lower, but was perfect for me) Will be delivered in a Fender shotgun type (see photos). Non-smoking environment as usual. The cavities have been fully shielded with conductive paint (and some copper too), the scratchplate (or pickguard for some) has been fully shielded with aluminium and the bass has been set up professionally, which means it's super easy to play and dead silent. It is fitted with a set of broken in La Bella 760FS Deep Talking Stainless Steel Flat Wound (45 - 65 - 85 - 105), which really serve this bass. It comes with the thumb rest and the two ashtrays. The bridge cover has the foam inside cut to fit à la Nordymute, so not pushing on the strings, but going "around" them: true Motown sound guaranteed. What you see is what you get ! Look carefully at the photos taken from different angles and lights to see the real condition, which is good with all the nicks of 30 years old bass. Due to severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 4 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using as well as some stuff I don't use. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. Don't hesitate to ask for more.

  14. if it makes you feel any better, a few months ago I was sat at home of an evening listening to river of bass by underworld. I started to twitch slightly as once in a while there seemed to be an odd resonance colouring random bass notes. I put the track on repeat and wandered the room trying to track down anything that might be vibrating in sympathy. Sometime around the 6th repeat of the track and with no resonant culprit found I realised that the sound was the intermittent snoring of my somewhat belurgied cat. doh

  19. ONE CAB SOLD ALREADY! ONLY ONE NOW ON OFFER! ... Gone ONE GONE, ONE TO GO! I suspect that these need no introduction for most of you, but in case you have any doubts: yes, these really are as astonishing as the hype says they are. How on earth can something so small and light sound so warm, loud and fat? And when you put two of them together ... 500 watts at 4 ohms! Lordy! I bought them during lockdown and have used them pretty much every day as my home practice/rehearsal setup. I really do love them, but I'm now GASsing for Eventide H90, and my Charvel JJV isn't shifting, so these are next up. (And to be honest, I also prefer the more hifi sound of my pair of Big Baby IIs to the warmer vintage tones that these offer, so that makes parting a little easier. But only a little!) Immaculate condition - not even the slightest suggestion of this 'tolex peel' thing that I have read so much about on this forum. Full specs here: https://barefacedbass.com/product-range/one10.htm New, these would cost you £549 each with covers, so at £450 apiece you're getting a decent saving for good-as-new gear - even more so if you buy them both as a pair. (Go on, you know it makes sense!) I don't have any suitable packaging at the moment and would much prefer home collection in South Birmingham or meetup within reasonable driving distance from Brum, but I am willing to post to England, Scotland or Wales only (thanks for nothing, Brexs*it) for an extra £25. No trade offers please, unless you have an immaculate Eventide H90 to offer me! Thanks!

  22. Seems like Glam bands in the main are a nice social lot. I joined my band as a dep in late 2016 to help them out as the replacement bass player (the original bassist had had a heart attack) needed an hernia op. My 80s band wasn’t doing much so I filled in for the a couple of months. Like you, knew the songs but most were re-keyed. Ended up not leaving.... When the big C struck in 2021 I offered my resignation but the lads wouldn’t hear of it and we carry on at a flexible reduced rate of about 40 gigs a year. I aim to keep rocking until I’m in the ground!

  28. Made by Fujigen Gakki, model number 2387, the set-neck P/J version is referred to as 'Custom' in the only catalogue I can find it in - Fujigen model number conventions suggest it's likely the proper designation's 2387B/DX. http://s93105080.onlinehome.us/Ibanez-Catalogs/file.php_n=1974-2&p=&y=1974.html Looks like there's no serial number which means it's pre 1976, and a quick look in the catalogues suggest this version appeared around 1974. There may be dateable codes on the pickups or possibly stamped on the back of the scratchplate but '74/5 seems likely. Interestingly these pre-date actual Gibson Flying V basses by 9 or 10 years. I think these are pretty rare - I suspect a lot of people on the Ibanez Vintage Guitars FB group would like to see it, and might well want to buy it off you.

  31. I can heartily recommend and endorse the Tredders Bass Method (TM). It involves doing the minimum of practice, and then buying progressively more expensive basses, on the premise that "they'll make me play better". It hasn't worked yet, but I can feel a breakthrough coming on any day now. I obviously just need to buy a couple more expensive basses...

  32. Played a social club down on the south coast last night. These places can be like God's waiting room but last night's venue proved to be a lovely place . Helpful staff, simple load in, stage, lighting, full house all into it and dancing all night. Picked up a wedding enquiry and gave out cards afterwards. Nice payment and a bunch of happy punters. Played the Bugera T through my Elf 10s, used the Bruce Thomas Profile and Ampero Stomp and created a righteous din.

  33. Another great gig at a club in Huddersfield last night with the glam band. Wasn’t expecting miracles because Covid had hit this club pretty hard when we played it last year with a lot of the punters still AWOL. This seems to have reversed this year and the club was packed and we had a great night. Another booking to sort but this will be 2024 as we are now booked solid for 23. Going on 7 years with this band now and it’s still loads of fun!

  34. Imagine the scenario, you've been playing with the order of your pedals during the week & at Fridays gig you feel like the GOAT (ask the kids) cuz you know your new sound is gonna blow everyone away! But you plug everything in, you look as cool as the proverbial cucumber then you go to sound check & theres no signal getting to your amp! You check over everything convinced that you've set up the signal chain just like you did when playing at home, you scratch your head, you begin to feel heat building up in your face & you know your cheeks are going red! Then, the drummer looks over your shoulder & says "you've got there input & output backwards on your tuner mate"! THE DRUMMER!

  35. Ah, this is such a familiar problem, I open up a kitchen cabinet and a SVT falls out, the washing machine turns out to be a B15 portaflex, the fridge freezer is really a long lost 8x10, and my wardrobe in reality is an old Acoustic 360. I must stop storing classic amps around the house, it's so careless of me, and slightly confusing.

  41. Even happened to me once with the covers band (minus the unpaid bit). Booked to play at the social club of a football team out in the sticks. Due to a toxic combination of other stuff going on in the town and a lack of promotion (maybe they thought they didn't have to), absolutely no-one turned up. Not a sausage. Played the first set to 2 bar staff. At half time they told us we could just stop, but paid us anyway. We're booked there again so hopefully the football club will actually have some supporters this time. The date? April 1st... made me chuckle and ask several times if it's a genuine booking

  42. I'm sure there's a "worst gig" thread somewhere, but just to chip in... Try playing in original metal bands. Then you get to do "unpaid practise". Sometimes the other bands might watch, but we played one once where the support band left and after we started our set, the soundman left too, meaning we literally played to no-one for 25 minutes and then went home unpaid.

  44. This puts the cat amongst the tonewood pigeons: - “NITROCELLULOSE LACQUER FINISHES These vintage finishes not only let the body breathe with its true tonal character, they also age in a distinctly personal way.” All those poly finishes must be suffocating the tonal character of your instrument so those arguments about which wood is better are pointless if you don’t have a nitro finish. 😮 Who knew?
