  1. Here is my current lineup of basses and after a run of cancelled gigs (there's nothing in the diary now until early April), I have no inclination to either add to or subtract from these any time soon. I did recently take delivery of one of the new Epiphone Newport short scales but it really wasn't for me so I returned it. Anyway, from left to right is my Sandberg II VT4 in an aged gold finish, 72 Jazz Bass, 75 P Bass and my old American Standard P Bass that I've had for years and is still the benchmark for any bass I play. All of them weigh under 9.5lbs (Sandberg 8lb 2oz, Jazz 9lb 3oz, 75 P 9lbs and P Bass 9lbs 3oz) and all do something slightly different to each other for me to justify keeping them as part of my much reduced arsenal. The Sandberg has been a revelation and having owned a few in the past I've rediscovered my fondness for them.

  3. Putting up for sale my Harley Benton MB-5 SBK Deluxe Series - what I call my StingFake5 Fretless Bass. Currently strung with Rotosound Flats. I wanted to have a 5 string fretless in my arsenal and I wanted a project. I had just finished reviving my Xotic which I really enjoyed and I wondered... what's next? So, I decided I wanted a fretless 5 string. I love fretless and can now play it quite well so am going to treat myself to something a bit lighter to use on gigs and something a bit more 'special'! Anyway... it is a standard Harley Benton MB-5 SBK - the stealth black one. However, as you can see, I have made a few modifications. I really enjoy playing it and originally, it was just for my studio but I want to gig with a fretless and this is just a bit too heavy for my poor back! So... the mods... Firstly, the defret. I'm quite an able person and quite meticulous with work I do on basses. I love to tinker. Go to the builds thread and find my Xotic renovation and although not a luthier by any means, I can do a decent job. So, i removed the frets with a soldering iron to heat the fretwire and managed to remove the frets with minimal tear out. Not a professional job by any means, but not bad. I filled the fret lines with a black 2 pack filler (not the cheap wood filler putty stuff) as my intention was to create a 'almost' unlined look (you can still see the lines but they aren't that stand out'y'), sanded until lovely and smooth and the used a spray poly finish on the fingerboard. I was going to epoxy it buy I had this poly laquer laying around so i thought, why not! It was a vintage poly so the dot have taken a yellow-ish hue but I kind of liked the look! Wet and dry sanded, a good buff and it come up with a nice sheen. It's not glossy, that wasn't what I was after but it has a nice look. I have some very minor grain which could have done with being rubbed down again and re-done, but there you go. It isn't perfect, but it has a nice mwah and plays nicely just as a fretless should! Secondly, I added some better tuners. These came from a Sire V7 bass I upgraded a while and were a big improvement on the HB ones. I also prefer a bit of chrome against the black. Hence the knobs as well. Finally, I added a Warman MM5 pickup - much nicer than the stock and as I was after a original stingray EQ, and I added the Artec SE-2 active EQ. Routed a battery box in the back and it sounds a darn sight more versatile than it did when it was a passive VVT set up. For reference it does have a main volume, blend and stacked 2 band eq. The blend selects the two coils of the pup. I left it in the middle and it was always my intention to add the retrovibe stinger pre with a series / parallel switch. I just never got round to it. You will notice the headstock and scratchplate is white - i love a black / white look and this is only a vinyl wrap which can easily be removed if you so wish. I can throw in the original pup and tuners with the same (if someone wants them). I added a cheeky Stingray5 logo for s***s and gigs. It isn't a Shuker or even a Sire, what it is a cheap and honest bass which if you fancy a five string fretless without spending too much cash, could be worth a look. Hell, you could probably strip it for spares if you fancied! It's just the bass and doesn't come with a gig bag - I will get some more pics when I get a chance as it's busy busy at the moment. Collection welcome in Lowestoft - I'm Bury St Edmunds way next Saturday if that helps anyone and Saxmundham way this Saturday. I could post neck off for a cheaper postage option but I doubt anyone will want to splash £30 on postage for this... Happy to answer any questions and take pics of anything specific. Could be tempted by trades in something interesting... If you have an 5 string fretless of a higher value, I could add some dosh possibly if that appeals.

  5. 1974 Jazz Bass in alder great weight 8.75 lbs with original hardshell case. A previous owner made a rout in the back for a battery. This was filled before my ownership. Both pickups have original windings, and sound as they should. Comes with brand new CTS pots and an original .05 ceramic disk cap. 6. This bass has been through a few BCers, I've owned it since 2017 and have only played it a handful of times, hence the need for it to go to a new home where someone gives it plenty of attention. It's had quite a bit done to it, most notably the Spinal Tap finish has been stripped by a previous owner; the natural wood finish has picked up a few small dings along the way and there's one fairly large knot on the upper horn (pictured). The fingerboard has some light wear that attempted to photograph. Since it's been with me I've had Andrew at Richmond Guitar Workshop do the following: • new nut • nordstrand Big Blade pickup • aguilar OBP-2 preamp (stacked bass/treble boost/cut) I'm looking for £450 plus whatever delivery/collection options are required, I have a few gig bags that the bass can be shipped with depending on buyer's preference.

  9. I didn’t, but I did buy a Tim Commerford long scale passive which, I suppose is similar in some respects (although has a tone, volume, parallel/single coil/series, and boost/cut facilities so vastly more controls than the Joe Dart). The two areas where the Joe Dart differs a lot (and I love the tone on the MSG Vulfpeck concert to the extent I’ve watched it over and over, as per @fretmeister) is……. it’s Joe Dart playing it and it’s through the Vulf compressor - otherwise he’s using the same amp as me as well. I’m about to invest in a compressor (to get closer to his tone and also Bernard Edwards’s as well as some other things looking at) and have worked on trying to play as hard as Joe Dart appears to on some of his stuff. I came very close to ordering a natural Joe Dart but then the Commerford came along and I absolutely had to have that - so the Dart fell by the wayside. I don’t like the Jazz version. Gratuitous pics……

  12. Warwick Streamer NT1 Rockbass to give its full title. A thru neck, gloss black, curved bodied active PJ bad boy similar in style to a spector. As i say every time i sell a bass on here - i need to learn im a standard P bass man! I swapped out the chrome hardware to a Warwick gold bridge and Wilkinson open back tuners (see numerous online reports of Warwick tuners failing). The tuners are drop in replacements with no extra holes/reeming. Come wearing thunderous Fender pure nickel strings and is immaculate! Collection would be from Bolton or can meet up within reasonable distance. Trade wise i would consider a black Fender cabronita P bass Better pics to follow once im back from the rehearsal space

  15. I realise these might be old news / not news / not even interesting 😁 to folks here but I hadn't seen any mention of the new Squier Sonic series Bronco basses? Standard BBOT bridge and upgraded tuners (might still be like cheese though) and a non-maple neck option for the black bass fans among us. Obligatory pic: I almost bought a s/h Bronco last year and have a Mustang bass now otherwise I'd be looking at these with a keener eye. Probably the same Strat pickup in there, though...

  16. I had to go down to the Royal Mail depot for a parcel anyway so even though I didn't get the ticket through the door this morning I asked them if I could just get the parcel and pay the tax there and then. To my surprise, I could! They look even better in person than the photos. Looks like I'll be a busy boy over the next couple of evenings...

  17. Yes, te Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius was similarly a rip off, I lifted it out of its case with the reverence that it undoubtedly deserved, plugged i in to my B-15 and started playing, and it sounded like some fecking idiot from Kent was playing it

  23. Most 60s music seemed horribly old fashioned to me, that has changed dramatically. The main change though has been that I can enjoy whatever I'm asked to play. I used to be so precious about what I could or couldn't be seen to play. Now, if you pay me I'll play it, and probably enjoy doing so.

  29. I happened to stumble across this video a while ago and found it equally bizarre. Clearly, he is not a fretless player and probably should have asked for the interview to be kept brief with a spec sheet in front of him. The short clip where he is playing is pretty hokey. That said, I found this particular bass a really odd place to start with fretless, if you're not a fretless player. The Thumb is idiosyncratic enough without having two more strings than you'd normally have on a Thumb. I play both lined and unlined fretless and I do prefer a lined board when the going gets tough. Whenever I see these heavily figured boards on an unlined fretless I always wonder if the figuring there wouldn't just distract you from getting your fingers in the right place. Obviously the guy has spent thousands and thousands on this bass without the chops to get to grips with it, but that's nothing new. Everyone will have seen players who have walls of Alembics yet nothing more exciting than three chord blues. I hope he is getting on better with it now but I expect that it's probably being used as an ornament.

  31. Here's my Ric story. I'd never ever tried one but always fancied them. The sound, more than the looks, but not the clank - that mellow hollow tone you get half way up the neck. Machine Head. My problem was they are too expensive to buy on whim and I'd been put off making that kind of financial committment by all the tales of 'you've got to try a hundred before you find the one that fits'. Then a couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get a quality, early 70s MIJ Faker which was close enough to get a proper impression and I totally and utterly loved it. I loved the look, complete;ly blown away by the tone. It say comfortably in many genre, more versatile than I had been led to believe by the detractors. But heavy. Getting on for 11 lbs. I wore it for a couple of hours one rehearsal and my back hurt for the next week. Plus it has a bound slab body, something I struggle with, so I had to move it on, which was a desperate shame. I've found out that some Rics are lighter, coming in at around 9lbs, some are unbound with a forearm shamfer, but that still isn't light enough so I resigned myself to never having one. Then Davie @kodiakblair came to my rescue and sold me a Retrovibe Renegade that needed a bit of conversion work, which got done. So what I have now is a Retrovibe Renegade with generic Ric style pickups, unbound body, forearm shamfer, weighs under 8lbs. Does it look like a Ric? Kinda. Enough, anyway. Does it sound like a Ric? Kinda. Enough, anyway. It is light enough for me to wear all night, cost around £350 all in and has scratched my Ric itch.

  32. Standard Euro Lx body and neck, but with nord pickups, darkglass preamp, and ebony fingerboard, spec wise really more like a LT than a LX (but got stack knobs for low mid so you dont have to tweak it at the back like the LT) I do like the not so consistent maple figure, kinda reminds me of those evening dress with those silky shoulder parts Recently had been pairing it with a bassman-style pedal, shin’s music bassmaster preamp (essentially an amp-in-box) in the loop of my ag700, which kinda works really well as the spector is strong enough to push the pedal to have that breakup sound while dont suffer too much from the natural compression the pedal would have that I found to be too much when using other more vintage-output bass, you can say it “smooth out the sound” or “compressed the stinky poo out of the sound” (depends on your taste), essentially when I turn off bassmaster and back to the ag700, the sound literally gets bigger (or less coherent depends on your preference), I would say the ag700 is just bigger. The preamp channel compresses, and with drive on there’s even more. But the spector really is so strong that it reaches that seeeter point of both worlds (which makes me wonder how would these high output modern preamp basses go with some vintage bassman or svts) I do still like the bassmaster on sometimes as a comp in the loop with some colouring, I honestly dont like the sound, but it’s definitely usable or even quite handy in many situations I know, I know, I just like it flexible, sorry for those who cant bear these old photos of the Lt I held for like two days. I do like the ebony+black headstock aesthetic Never really a spector player (mostly got some traditional-body stuff; maybe with hotter pickups and such) before so had been surprised at how different the high end is on these things. Is it the darkglass thing? or regular lx is also like this?

  35. (Will take some better photos later!) Hi all, I have powerful GAS... therefore in order to sate this GAS I am begrudgingly putting up for sale my GR Bass AT410+ cab. This is the 1200w version and weights in at a rather ridiculous 14.8kg! It comes with the official GR Bass padded cover too. (Useful to house one's guitarist too!) I'd potentially trade this for a bass of equal value... From Bass Direct this will cost you a little over £1300. I've used this at home mainly, it's not been gigged or in anyway abused in its year or so with me. It sounds absolutely epic, articulate and quite transparent. With it being able to handle 1200w it'll pretty much take anything you want to throw at it. These don't really ever come up for sale on the second hand market, with good reason, and may very well change my mind! But for now, the cab and cover are yours for £950 which I feel represents a great saving from new with no lead time for a cab that is hugely powerful and incredibly light. Collection from Wickford, Essex or we can discuss meeting.

  41. I just bought my little RM rig home. RM EVO II 500w and 2x10. Sold it a year ago and the need for an amp and cab has just resurrected itself. Funnily enough, the person who bought it listed it a few days ago, used once in the year, along with my old Roqsolid cab cover, Ashdown amp bag and cables, £400. Bit his hand off to get it back and have been pleasantly reminded of what a fantastic setup this is.

  47. Bought a used 70's 4001 in 1984 and initially loved it until I grew to hate it for it's idiosyncrasies. I sold it. Two years later I decided I really missed it so bought a used 4003. Loved it at first until I grew to despise it for it's idiosyncrasies. Sold it. Crap pickups, dreadful bridge, soft fretwire, bonkers twin truss rod system and questionable build quality did my nut in. To this day I'm really glad I sold them ...yet somehow really miss them and have come close to purchasing another a couple of times: I know if I had I'd have loved it before growing to hate it then sold it. That's Ricks for you. It's like a form of madness.
