  1. I’ve noted a few discussions lately on the Squier Classic Vibe 50’s P-bass, so I thought I’d post my mods to one that I did a while back - at least a couple of years ago. I’ve always had a fascination about Chris Squire’s modded Telecaster bass - since seeing that picture on the little booklet that came with the Fragile album. When the Squier CV’s first came out I thought to myself - hmmm, you could do a nice “Squire” modded version to one of those. So, the first thing I was going to do was to add another pickup at the bridge position - then things went a little bit crazy. Seeing as it is an “inspired by” rather than a clone I thought - what about a humbucker in the neck position ? A mudbucker would take up too much space, what about something alternative - how about a Ricky, given the Squire connection. After a bit of rummaging around the internet I came across Creamery pickups in Manchester. As it turned out, as well as a toaster, I ended getting a set of 52-Pbass pickups too - Alnico 2 for the middle and an alnico 5 for the bridge. A three hole telecaster control plate was bought which needed a little bit more routing of the existing cavity so that the concentric pots fitted. A Jazz Bass pickup cover was used to cover the bridge pickup. In a final bout of madness I got the luthier who did the work to add the “Squire” decal. How does it sound ? Well, the middle pickup has a lot of that early 50’s sound - great attack and definition. Maybe not as much weight as a 57-Pbass but has some nicely judged mids. The bridge, having alnico 5’s is quite aggressive but not thin and nasty. I think if you like Jean Jacques Burnel’s sound you’d like this bass. The toaster has less mids than the P-bass pickups but has a bigger bottom. With all three turned on it sounds almost active ! So, all in all very pleased with the way it turned out. Going forward I might be tempted to sand down the back of the neck for a more satin feel and get a bone nut installed. I really do like the smaller body shape on these basses - very comfortable. Sorry for my ramblings - hope you enjoy !

  2. F Bass BN5 Deluxe in near mint condition. I'm reluctantly selling this incredible instrument, custom made for me and delivered this year. Reason for sale is that I'm a bit of a vintage bass kinda guy and I can't quite get the sound in my head from this instrument. If you watch my demo video you will see that it looks spectacular and is built to the very highest standard. The range of tones is frankly amazing and i really enjoy the modern and focused neck position tones. There is a 3 band EQ plus a passive tone control which is super useful for taming the highs in a very natural way. Additionally, each pickup can be configured to single-coil, series or parallel with the flick of a switch giving 9 variations of tone. Finally there is a volume control for each pickup. The pickups feature exposed pole pieces and ebony veneer. Very small blemish below the 'mids' pot as illustrated... 3. I got this tone monster in Philadelphia 2004 and started using it as my main bass up until the end of 2006. I used it for recording Morrissey - Ringleader of the tormentors (singles and b-sides) in Rome where Tony Visconti (who produced the album) kindly signed it. Also used for the live at Earls Court album and many videos and tv appearances. It plays and sounds fantastic! All original except the thumb rest which I added and is from an early 60’s p-bass, tone knob is missing. Plenty of life left in the original frets, straight neck and truss rod turns and original solder on the wiring. Lots of lacquer checking, chips and dings but no cracks, breaks or repairs. I don’t have an original case but can supply a later fender hard case. Possibly interested in trades for vintage or fender custom shop bass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Crwp3zfiCI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NA2hnOIkQ0ghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3gridIpTa8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foR3piWykzs

  5. Lovely lovely Jazz, just need the space and the cash... bought from Bassdirect and some of the pics (the better ones) are theirs. Has had replacement Nordstrand pickups and previously had another pickup fitted near the neck which has been professionally filled and is under the scratchplate so can't be seen. Finish is all original and all other parts are original as well, to my knowledge, except the scratchplate. Has a basic hardcase. Pickup greatly preferred but could also meet within reasonable distance. Postage in the UK is also an option, I have proper shipping cartons. 4.6kg. 8. Just played 2 nights with tribute band Dire Streets, at Tavistock Wharf and Tetbury Goods Shed. I was already booked to play a bass gig with them in May and a couple on rhythm guitar in August/September. Their regular bass player had a family emergency and fortunately I had already transcribed all the bass parts and had them in ForScore on my iPad. I wouldn’t normally take dots out on a gig like that but this was at 36 hours’ notice! It was also my first time going amp-less, but more on that in another thread. The band were pleased with my work and so was I, in the sense that all the preparation paid off. Both nights were packed and the appreciation coming back from audience was phenomenal. Now looking forward to my other gigs with the band, where I will get a rehearsal!

  9. Just got in from a gig with the punk covers band that I play guitar for. Was good tho sparsely populated, but those in the pub enjoyed it. Had the inevitable continual request for something we don’t do, Arctic Monkeys this time, which then changed to Irish music. Ah yes we can help there, and proceeded to play Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers. Said requester not happy, you just can’t please some people!

  10. A nice local gig in Rotherham last night, which was a pleasure after last week’s 3am bedtime. It was definitely compact and bijou but everyone was friendly and enjoying the show. The club was full before we’d got set up which compromised the sound check but we managed. One number we hadn’t done for a couple of years (far far away) was a challenge as me and the guitarist thought we’d agreed on a key with the singer and erm...y’know. Fortunately we cured it quickly on the fly and no one was any the wiser. Off to the seaside next week - Withernsea, oh we do like to be beside the seaside.

  14. Sold elsewhere I bought this from @Beedster and it is a beautiful thing but sadly it’s not getting enough love here, short scale doesn’t fit my hands or ability😂. Build and relic work by @d_g and it’s truly sublime ( he has since refinished my Lakland bass). It started life as a Squier Classic Vibe Mustang. Since then it's had the following modifications: - Nordsrand NM4 Pickup - Hipshot Lollipop tuners - Neck and body fully stripped - Luminlay side dots installed - Body refinished in seafoam green over two colour sunburst - all in nitro and done a few months ago so it will continue to wear as it's played - Heavy relic finish with lots of checking - Neck refinished in tinted nitro with matching seafoam headstock - Back of neck nitro worn back down, tinted and left with a super smooth satin finish - Gold Fender decal applied - Fender Rosewood Thumb rest added - All hardware reliced - New parchment pickguard with subtle relic - Squier neckplate replaced with plain relic one original thread here with more info and pics Happy to ship in a Hardcase within the U.K. with DPD etc for £20 or my man with a van at £65. No trades thanks

  16. Seeing as my other precision isn't selling, I'll see if there is any interest in this! Status Graphite Jazz bass neck on an alder body, finished in nitro with light relicing. This is actually ocean turquoise metallic but made to look like an aged lake placid blue. I wanted it to look like a bass Matt Osman played in the 90s, I believe he was pictured with it in an advert for Elites and it looked amazing. This is a pretty close replica. Body was made and finished by a company called red dot customs, don't know if they're still going. Has modern Fender 62 P-bass pickup, and all the other hardware is Fender apart from the tuners which are Schaller. I only used this in the studio so never got round to fitting strap buttons. Jack socket is a tight fit but means that your cable won't get loose! I think the relative tightness can be adjusted but never bothered me. Neck is lovely, and frets are in very good condition. Pickup greatly preferred but could also meet within reasonable distance. 20. Sub-optimal, but ended up OK. The gig started OK, but midway through our cover of Regret I noticed a nasty smell and suddenly couldn't hear myself any more. Turns out the ABM had gone poof during the worst possible song. Fortunately the pub has a reasonably clued-up sound guy which meant I could DI from my Behringer BDI21 so we were able to complete the gig, but because of the position of the PA speakers I could barely hear myself. I'm told I did OK though, so yay for muscle memory. Now begins the serious quest for a new amp though.

  22. So recently I bought this '78 jazz and an '83 at the same time to try and see which I preferred after some long term testing rather than an hour in a shop. The '83 needed a ton of work, which I spent the time doing and subsequently I've just bonded with that one a bit more so selling this killer 1978 jazz. Now if you're wanting a factory pure 1978, this isn't the one for you, but if you want a vintage jazz you can take out on stage or to the studio rather than living under the bed, this is probably what you've been looking for! The pros: Ash body, RW bound board with blocks and a lovely straight neck with fully functioning truss rod, low action and great sound. Not a razor thin neck, more of a mid-70s U shape front to back. When it was refinished, it was given a matching headstock with gold 70s period correct font logo. Looks awesome and it's always the first thing people comment on. Tuners are original. Lovely, rich neck pickup tone (very p bass esque) and excellent, bright late 70s bridge tone as to be expected from the pickup placement. A really versatile vintage workhorse (one of the reasons I wanted it). The 'cons' It was refinished a long time ago but the good news is the finish is aging nicely as has sunken into the grain, much like an original finish would have so looks good and means you can get it cheaper! The previous owner had the neck and pickguard on another bass whilst the body was getting refinished, and they trimmed down the original guard. I still have it and it retains the serial number but looks stupid because they've trimmed it 🙄 Now it has a replacement tort guard, which fits perfectly and looks killer. Original guard obviously included. It's got a badass ii bridge on it, which obviously isn't original to the bass but plays well and obviously adds some mass to the bridge. The pots have been changed out for some high quality replacements, pickups seem original to me but no guarantee on that. I'm not really looking for trades ATM but if you have something trade value around £2k you can always send me an offer and see what I say. I am willing to post, but would want the buyer to be sure this is the bass they want first and understand it's none-original. Comes in a gator hardcase just for shipping/storage, wouldn't use it day-to-day as the handle is broken but the case does its job.

  23. I bought myself a cheapy wireless system off AliExpress (Lekato WS-90). It was almost half the price of it on Amazon. I picked it up from the sorting office today after a failed delivery, got to reading the manual and, well, I don't think my bowl of moules mariniere nor my blowtorch have any jack sockets 😅 Still looking forward to trying it out at practice tonight though!

  28. SOLD The clear out continues! I listed these a couple of years ago and got cold feet, but having had them sit there since unused they need to go! Here are a matched pair of the remarkable Barefaced ONE10 speakers bought from this forum a few years ago. These were a special order from Barefaced using a *edit for clarity* - special hard wearing paint designed for high end PA cabs instead of the usual tolex. This was to avoid the tolex peeling off which the standard version of these cabs are so susceptible to. - I've tried to capture it in the pics. These also have the funky retro silver grill cloth. These are virtually mint as they have seen about 5 gigs in the few years I've owned them. They come supplied with the Barefaced soft covers too also in as new condition. Not looking to split at this stage - Priced to sell at £650 a huge saving on the current price - £549 each w/ covers. Here is a review from the Barefaced website, that amusingly I wrote! banging on about how good these things are. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0088/3094/3290/files/BGM-One10-Two10-June2016.pdf?17982888344997180786 I'd rather not post at this stage and would like to demo for the prospective buyer, so its collection only from London N21 please. I may be up for a nearby meet up? please PM me.

  30. I'm in two minds about this but my wonderful Eastman guitar just isn't getting the use it deserves. Exceptionally well built, and plays great. The Lollar P90s sound amazing and are really responsive. It's the Antique Classic finish which looks lovely. It hasn't been gigged and has been well looked after. Comes with a top quality case too. £1,050. Collection from Beccles, Suffolk much preferred, but I can possibly post if required.

  33. Added the 410 today. I need do a test load in my car but I'm pretty sure it all fits for those times when you just want a little bit of edge in a venue. It provides me with a lot of flexibility in set up. Pretty excited to find a venue I can put it all at now....but I'll definitely be practicing with it all over the next few weeks. ✌️🧙‍♂️

  34. I bought a mint 1982/3 Stingray in 1989 for £340. The chap even brought it round to my house for me. The Bass Centre at Wapping had a selection of used Stingrays for £495 a pop for a typical example. You could buy a new Wal for about £800. I had girls who fancied me and a bright future to look forward to. If anyone invents a time machine, please let me know.

  37. So I woke up early and thought why don’t I make a 400 mile round trip up to Glasgow to go see the Reverend bass collection at Merchant City Music - I may have a problem - I’m selling most of my basses but keep seeing the buzz and Reverend - and had day free so hey. Anyway tried the Decision P which was ok - neck was alright but i can’t get over the extra offsetness of the bodies. Next I tried the Triad and it had 2 really really nice pickup options out of the 5 - the bridge pick up was thin but the neck and middle together was great. But the aesthetics are not for me. Whilst I was there, the staff were attentive but also let you get in with it. So I tried some more options- JMJ Mustang - yep good 👍 Nate Mendel P - awful set up and just wasn’t feeling it - FGN Jazz - didn’t note model about about £600 - very great playing neck - sounds good but not for me - then the Gold Foil Fender Jazz - WTF is going on with MIM Fender? The neck felt awful- £1300 to feel fret edges under binding - it just felt not worth it. Then at more than 6 times cheaper the SX P £200 - great neck - the pups had less output - but some good pickups and maybe bridge upgrade/ tuners could be a really useful back up. I stupidly didn’t have a go of the anniversary 4005 Ric- can’t afford it anyway. Had quick drive round the city then drive home £60 petrol and no bass bought but tempted to get an SX and upgrade it

  40. Sounds reasonable if it's in good nick. I played one in the old Bass Centre in 1996 actually. It was amazing. I've often thought about it. They cost about a grand back then, back when a grand was worth a lot more than it is now. Man, that was nearly 30 years ago...

  42. Buckie, NE Scotland. A wee place in the grand scheme of things, and yet the venue in question somehow manages to be near absolutely nothing. We stood outside at 11.30pm and you could hear nothing except for the faint sound of sporadic cars on the A98 in the distance. Eerie.

  43. Warwick prices in particular have gone crazy. I swear a couple of years ago you could buy a Bubinga GPS Corvette for £900, they’re now around £1800 - literally doubled. Surely they (and others) are at risk of pricing themselves out of the market. Or maybe the economics of selling fewer basses for more money is slightly better for them. Having said that I thought the whole point of the investment in that large factory of theirs was to increase output. All very confusing.

  44. Love playing SLF songs with the punk band. Some great basslines. We currently do At The Edge and Alternative Ulster and looking to add Gotta Getaway and Nobody's Hero. All songs i'd never heard before joining the punk covers band. I was never into punk back in its hey day but recognise most of the songs we do. Amazing how good some of the songs are and how much i really enjoy playing them. Some of those basslines thrown together one after the other can be quite a challenge for a fingerstyle player like myself but all good fun. Dave

  46. To be fair , Warwick are a special case. For a long time now they have been trying make their basses more valuable by increasing the prices. Their reasoning is that if they charge the same as Fodera or Wal ect then that will confer equal status on the instruments they produce.
