  1. We played at The Regent Theatre in Stoke on Trent last night. Another big grand old place, and we drew around 1200 punters in - this was a rescheduled gig from earlier in the year when the band was suffering from bouts of Covid and flu. Audience were well up for it and the band played well, despite still being a cellist down. Bit of a long drive home, but in bed by 2am.

  2. Great night with the 70's Glam Rock covers band BLOCKBUSTARZ in Camelon Social Club near Falkirk. Sold out tickets but they were still taking pay at the door. They were actually taking tables and chairs from other rooms to get more people in. Reckon about 150 folks in. Stage was tiny with only enough space for drumkit and an amp each side. I had nowhere to move about tho. Both singers stood on the dance floor. Dancing most songs from the word go after people got over the shock and awe of the band costumes. Had some issues with noise levels because one of the other committee members decided it was a good idea to book another private function in the lounge next door. After some heated debate between committee members it was agreed by most that people were actually paying £12 a ticket to see the band. Highlight of the night was when we had the lead singer from Hot Chocolate Kennie Simon sing You Sexy Thing with us in the 2nd set. Dance floor was absolutely choc a block for that one with women wanting their pic taken with him while he was singing. Our guitarist knows him and it turns out our drummer lived in same street as him and members of Sweet back in the day He gave us some great comments that the band was excellent and very tight. Great musicians. I was fair chuffed with that. All in all a good night and well paid too. Got paid at half time break and they wanted us back in November too and all arranged at the break between sets.

  3. Pice from last nights show at The Bend Theatre. Not my best night. The Theatre was packed, around 350 people. Nice dressing rooms comped with high end pizza and drinks. The real take away for me was, doing these hour and 20 minute theatre shows I find were positioned where were have to put more energy into the show than you would put into a 4 hour bar gig. I was wore out at the end of the show. Blue

  4. Played a party, depping for @Graham again as he… was a guest at the party 😀 No pressure then…. 😆 I had fun even if the acoustics were a bit crappy, it was either boom or toppy clank and nothing I did seemed to make much difference. Hopefully it sounded better out front! Gave my new Zoot Funkmeister P5/32 an airing, man it’s such a comfortable instrument to play - thanks @Cosmicrain 😊

  5. Beautiful English luthier made bass. Built by Mike Walsh, Iceni bass in Essex. Seymour Duncan Basslines Jazz neck and Musicman bridge pickups with 2 band EQ. Neck is 42mm at the nut and 22mm deep so quite a flat neck profile, beautiful to play. Unfortunately just not my thing tone wise as the band I’m in is more classic rock so my G&L SB-1 is always first choice. In the middle of a big house renovation at the moment so trying to clear out anything that I’m not using much. Mike currently has closed his order book due to demand so hard to get a bass made by him right now. For some inexplicable reason Zoot basses don’t seem to hold high values secondhand so I’ve priced it accordingly. Collection/meet up preferred but can post if a fair arrangement can be made regarding a hard case (I have a nice G&G case).

  7. Absolutely brilliant gig with Clutching at Straws Saturday eve. In 20 years, that’s a top 5 gig. We played really well, it grooved, it rocked and the harmonies were on point. Crowd up and dancing. Fed and watered and paid and 20 minutes down the road. Shoulder sore after slinging Betsy two nights in a row but who cares?! Everyone should have a mate with his own pub in his garden!!

  8. Thanks to everyone who made the event happen, great venue, excellent cross section of basses that no shop could ever assemble. It was a privilege to try so many fine instruments and many of my bass prejudices are now in shreds. Eyes opened to the D-Roc shape and the Mustang Bass and amazingly the Teisco, oh and an upright bass and… 😃

  9. Second night of the weekend. Twin BB2’s and the Aggie Tonehammer 350. Worked well and sounded great. Cut down night as one guitarist was away, but Max and I have played together as three piece so no great problem. Good crowd. Time for a rest now

  10. I have a little story to tell, if you'll let me. When this was first posted for sale here, like all the comments, I just thought it was a gorgeous bass, but never attainable. Fast forward to the Bristol Guitar Show and Robin did indeed bring this along (with other beautiful guitars he'd made) to his stand. He was generous enough to let people have a play. And sure enough it was just lovely. However, at the time I didn't realise it was the same bass, and misread the thinking it was £2000. Now, normally this wouldn't even be a consideration for purchase, but my mother has just passed away and there was a small amount of money left. And so, thinking it was £2000 and there was just enough justification to buy it, headed back to Robins stand to show my brother, card in hand ready to retry and purchase. Only to reread the ticket at the correct price. Oh bugger. That was too much and the dream was cut short. So close. Fade to black. I thought, I'd just compare the one here for sale to the one at the guitar show, and low and behold, it was the same one! I hadn't realised. I forwarded a link to my brother (who understands these things) just to say I'd already coveted this bass. Fade up to a few hours ago. We have few things to sort out regards my mums passing, so a trip over to my brothers was arranged. Little did i know that this was a cover story, and as i walked into the lounge, there on the table was the bass. Also standing there was Robin who had personality driven down (and also to see the look on my face no doubt!). My brother had contacted him and arranged for him to bring it over. He'd also made up the difference from what I was prepared to pay from his share of mums money. Can't tell you how stunned I was. It's as sexy as it looks in the photos. Robin has done a great setup on it and it plays and sounds fantastic. Sorry for the long post, but I had to share the story. I'm still a little stunned tbh. And thank you again Robin. It was a pleasure to meet you and thank you so much for driving it over. I'm bloody chuffed!

  14. I see Norman mentioned quite often on bass-related sites. Just a heads up, especially if you’re Birmingham based. They’re playing at the college I teach at in a few weeks time. It’s a lovely venue with a great sound system. https://www.theblockheads.com/live-gigs/

  15. Another really enjoyable, busy gig at the Railway Hotel in Royton (near Oldham). The whole band is squeezing every ounce of fun out of our last year together. Excellent LL who looked after us (and paid us extra as he was so happy with the performance). My setup is very settled now. Ibanez SMS 1005, Ashdown RM 500 and TKS 212. Got some folk to get video on my new phone and I'm really happy with my tone and the overall mix. Even a stress fracture in my leg that curtailed my dancing couldn't take the shine off. https://youtu.be/njBUH1kJeCM https://youtu.be/rzJweF9AxM4

  21. So my Frank Bello pimp job is done. A fun project, just because. I stripped out everything basically. There was nothing wrong with it stock, but I decided to just have fun with it. The only original parts now, are the wooden ones. I didn’t want to throw silly money at it, so I was sensible on the spending, basically thinking that everything should be black. I think it looks better than the stock chrome hardware. Wilkinson tuners, black bridge, strap locks, knobs….. @KiOgon loom …. Alan Entwhistle (?!?) pickups, which seem well made and pretty high output. What do you think?

  22. A marvellous Bash in a lovely central venue, loads of room, loads of beautiful basses, lots of gorgeous Basschatters. I finally got to try a Warwick Thumb, I've always wanted to try one since they came out, now I know I want one badly. I shall have to consult Warwick specialists about which years were the best for a four string thumb. I also played a Kramer, finally, thanks to @floFC, I thought it would be heavier than a tungsten Jupiter but it wasn't quite that heavy, really lovely bass. Other than that I sat in a very comfy chair quietly guffing and playing my bass whilst occasionally plotting with @Owen around how to send @Jabba_the_gut home with less basses than he arrived with. I ate eight mini pork pies which, I think, was a whole packet plus two more and I also managed not to shout fiddle! every time a raffle winner's name was called. I may have eaten my own weight in Jaffa Cakes. For a confirmed misanthrope events like this are often difficult, I would argue this isn't my fault and it's more of a genuine and appropriate response to the vast amount of people who are, invariably, horrible. Bass Bashes are a refreshing corrective to this because bass players, it turns out, are, on the whole, splendid. As @Andyjr1515 was checking the setup of chatter's basses I thought it might be an interesting act of destabilisation to get Andy to check the setup of two of my @Jabba_the_gut basses hoping he'd find it wanting whereupon I would inform @Jabba_the_gut and we could have had them settle the issue in the car park in a gladiatorial scrap to the death. Unfortunately the setup was spot on and I was unable to deliver the Caliguaesque thumbs down from my chaise longue whilst being fed grapes by a minion. So, great Bash, thanks to the organisers and the participants. Next time can we make togas compulsory?

  23. But they do . Re-contextualising old tunes is what music is all about - especially jazz. Sinatra reharmonised Yesterday. Is that woke? Wokeness is about not being bigoted, racist, or wilfully offensive. It’s also about being a better person. if you find that offensive, it says more about you..:

  24. The Swan in Crawley last night. Smaller than usual crowd as another pub was hosting a charity do in memory of a local muso who passed away last year. But an enthusiastic bunch and at midnight when we all just wanted to clear up and go home they still wanted a couple more numbers. Home after one, back at my church for a pre service rehearsal at 9 this morning - not at my best to be honest. Used my new to me Rafferty HPF last night, it’s all very subtle to my clumsy ears but a definite tightening up of the low end.

  25. Much better last night than the previous one (we were part of a 5 band line up then and it was awful). Our third gig and everyone seems to stepped their game up, which is encouraging. I decided to use my shorty Stingray and during soundcheck, it seemed to cut through nicely FOH, but was lacking oomph to my ears. On stage it was often difficult to hear it. For the second set I changed to the JMJ Mustang and there was that low end power, I only hope that it sounded as good out front. Only downer was that I dinged the ‘Ray on the drummer’s floor tom, such is the life of a gigging bass I guess.

  27. Ken Smith Burner bass guitar, built in the 90s 4 strings Gloss black with matching (large) headstock Active 2 band eq 2 Ken Smith J-style single coil pickups Original Ken Smith branded leather strap and teardrop hard case included Plays like butter and sings like a bird - I can understand why these are much sought after by gospel players. Narrow and slim neck with a gloss finish - feels very fast. Despite its size, the bass is surprisingly light, and the large headstock doesn't cause any neck dive. Any 'marks' visible in the photographs are reflections - gloss black is very difficult to photograph cleanly! Please note that this is one of the original Ken Smith Burners from the 90s, as played by Hadrien Feraud, NOT one of the more recent Ken Smith Design Burner reissues. (Also, if you are in the UK and buy this bass before 29th April, although I am located in Ireland, in the EU, I can send the bass from Northern Ireland for cheaper shipping and to avoid customs charges into the UK). Shipping charges to the UK if purchased before 29th April will be about £60. After 29th April, around EUR120.

  28. Gig number 2 on Saturday was at The Barrington Arms. Lovely landlord, nice boozer and a willing crowd got us over the finish line. Singer had a nasty cough and was losing her voice so we skipped a few of the more trying tunes and stretched others out to fill the time. All good.

  31. We had fun reliving our youth and songs from 40+ years ago. Confused the hell out of some of the crowd with a set of spikey new wave songs in our stylie from back then - so sort of new wave but belying the eclectic roots of the band that listened to pre-punk and came out of a WMC club band that played country & hits from the 50's & 60's. Just three covers: "Another Girl, Another Planet" "Faithhealer" and "I Fought The Law", within a set of our 'classics': DeadTown, 9To5 (not Dolly P ), Melody Maker, Skateboard Love, Disco Generation, The Static, Bognor Boy, and many others none of you will ever have heard or be likely to you lucky things. Thankfully a crowd that included current bands and a bit of a school reunion for the other three helped. Supported by the old drummer from my main band's new band and got a chance to listen to my Darkglass + 2xBB2 rig that their bass player used (and it sounded rather nice ) Got through reasonably unscathed with the rhythm section holding things together with a nod of years together, and regular cries of "DON'T START IT TOO FAST!!!". Felt fast all the same but not as fast as when we were 18

  33. Played a great gig on Friday! Had some weird issues with one of our DIs dying for some reason - but we got it sorted! Got an insane amount of of compliments on the band and even my bass sound and playing. I have to learn how to take those compliments! 😂 Sadly the live stream didn’t go on but oh well. Next gig in a battle of the bands for £2k. So if anyone is free in aberdeen and wants to see a band that sounds like faith no more covering the prodigy (apparently!), you’re welcome to come party! LED shoes not required 😂

  34. I like a date stamp on the neck, even if it’s feint, I always think of it as part of the puzzle, I was expecting to see a big clean one on the 66 above, a bit surprised it doesn’t have one,it would kinda put me off if I was buying it

  37. A wee warm up show at the Glasgow HMV, ahead of a big show case we're doing next week. Definitely had the vibes of a gig you'd expect to be doing in your teens, plus it was done at quite a significant financial loss, but hey ho. Zero monitoring either, sounded OK out front though. 38. Bought a gold Epiphone Jack Casady 6 weeks ago from a local Basschatter. Needed a few things doing to it to make it suitable for me, and now it's ready to gig. First job was to turn the (asymmetrical) pickup the right way round. Next job was a full setup, but the standard bridge wasn't adjustable enough for saddle height. Luckily the classifieds here provided a new unopened Babicz bridge for it, at a considerable amount less than the new price. Fitted that, all good. A tiny bit of weight saving too. Changed the gold knobs for some black ones off an Epiphone Thunderbird to match the bridge and tuners. Removed the unnecessary pick guard (looks nicer I think). Main problem was the neck dive and balance - it matters a lot to me as I'm old and have a wrecked shoulder, so I fitted a set of black Gotoh Resolites. It's made all the difference, the standard tuners weigh in at 92g each, the Gotohs are 32g each, so a total saving of 240g on the headstock. A fresh set of Labella LTFs, and it's good to go. Lovely bass, nice neck, sounds wonderful, and records very well.

  39. We've had a spate of closures in town recently, the "major" music venue has been closed down and is going to be knocked down to make way for another hotel, the other venue, has been closed to make way for a hostel type hotel, which leaves 1 small venue to host bands that don't play Scottish "Trad" style music. Anyway, we played there last night, not having played there in a while. Played with 3 other bands, two of whom pulled in a decent crowd, and it was the opening bands first gig. We seemed to go down well, and had plenty of people complimenting the band after we'd played. Big grins all round.

  40. Thanks for the interest, @tubbybloke68. @Phil Starr's right - I'm fitting out the first couple of production models as we speak. The design is a more compact version of the Monaco, using the same CD horn/neo compression driver combo and the 10" equivalent of the bass driver. Genuine 600W AES (max. 1200W) thermal power handling. Like the Monaco, the low end has been tailored to go deep while preventing boom even at high SPLs. Full two-way crossover at 2kHz with HF protection. Weighs just under 11kg and kicks like a mule. I'll announce availability on here as soon as I have sorted the photography. Any questions, please ask.

I’ll be putting some oil on it soon… Yea, there‘s that near fatal error in the control area…the mortised control plate covers it completely.
