Two great gigs for us this week. First at Billingham Forum which is always a great place to play with the audience well up for having a good time. Then down to Burnley Mechanics, which despite the tricky load in is another one of those venues that is guaranteed to be a good night. Capacity audiences again defying current financial woes. Nice to have both of our cellists back with us, really does make a difference. We're having some time off in May, then back in June and July with a vengeance - our usual dates supplemented by some rescheduled ones due to recent band health issues, so looks like a very busy summer.12 points

****Relisted 16th June due to a payment issue from an overseas buyer. £1750 - no trades please. Gutted to sell this, but the slab body exacerbates nerve issues I have. I’ve been holding onto it for ages regardless as the tone is stunning, but it now feels like the right time to look into selling. Unique StingRay, 10 pole pickup (not usual 8) and special Old Smoothie epoxy coated preamp work so well with the alder body, literally a smoother Ray tone yet still punchy. The video below tells the story of this 1976 prototype made for Sterling Ball and named by Leo Fender. It’s a 40th Anniversary Ltd Ed. I’ve always had flats on it, but it will be sold with rounds on. The back of the neck was glossy, I’ve rubbed off the top gloss which in my opinion now makes it much smoother and comfier to play. The case has some marks and a small crack, all pictured for full disclosure7 points

Another month, another working men's club. This was very Phoenix Nights. We all made some heinous mistakes during the first set, bit we were on it for the second and encores, so it ended up being a good night. I got some great compliments on my playing and tone, and I'm loving this setup with the ABM Evo IV, Two10S and V7. One (admittedly quite inebriated) chap even declared me to be the best bass player he's ever heard with the exception of John Entwistle, which I'll take! 🤣 And the most attractive woman there by several hundred miles made a point of saying thank you to me for us putting on a great show, so that was just the cherry on the icing on the cake. The only downside was not getting home until 12.30am, not getting to sleep until 2, but then having to be up at 6.30 to hand off @Merton's broken amp to his sister. Fortunately Mrs Greg let me have a lie in until 10.30, so a good start to my long weekend.7 points

Last night's gig was in a tiny venue - the Three Horseshoes in Charlbury. The scroll of my bass was a couple of inches under the ceiling and it had to stay in place, held upright, during the interval as there was nowhere to put it down. The rooms were very cramped as well. Good gig, though - the audience appeared very pleased with the music. I was also incredibly lucky and found a large parking space right outside the front door of the pub. Though the band advertises as jazz the BL wants material that is easier on the general public's ear and so it tends to involve quite a few long grooves with obvious blues or reggae influence.7 points

Good gig last night in the Butchers Arms in Inverurie. Three quarters of the band had been absolutely full of the cold in the run up to last night, it was very much a case of kill or cure. I only started feeling more like myself the day before. Poor singer - he was really feeling it, high notes were an issue despite warming up and Vocalzone lozenges so we skipped a few he felt he wouldn't be able to do and juggled the set around a bit. It was a really cool audience though - they could see that he was struggling but powering through and not only appreciated the effort but really stepped in with the singing along on quite a few songs. Made it to the end, and I even got a couple of compliments on my playing - always nice to hear. Singer sounded like a frog afterwards, poor guy. Thankfully we've got a month off from gigs now so plenty recovery time. Weapon of choice last night: Reverend Triad. Even remembered to flex those series muscles a couple of times from the Freeway switch I wired in.6 points

Yamaha JB600R Pretty rare Yamaha Jazz Bass, made in 1984. It's a good build quality instrument, with a great jazz bass sound and equally good playability. As you can see it's finish is a lot of Candy Apple Red. The bass is in very good condition considering it's age, with just the usual small dents, scuffs, and minor damages to the lacquer. Nothing extraordinary. Overall the bass looks pretty clean. As I actually don't play this bass much, I decided to sell her in order to gain cash for something Music Man. €735 I am based in the Netherlands. The bass can be picked up or I can ship at buyers risk and expense. Payment in cash, through PayPal friends or banktransfer. As for trades I am mainly interested in a Music Man Stingray 4/5 with lacquered neck (like early '90s). Further a 70s/80s sabre with rosewood fretboard or Fender Flea active.. I've got 4 basses and other stuff up for sale, so could offer a combination of items for trade.5 points

Yamaha TRB 1005 for sale as having a bit of a change around (as you do?) Bit of controversy to start, however I can honestly say this is better than the more revered Japanese TRB5 I had a few years back....in every department! Proper jack of all trades, so many tones you can tease out and the action is wonderful! Apart from a few tiny depressions on the rear of the body this is near mint! Definitely prefer outright cash sale, but could be tempted be another 5'ver, maybe I'd scratch that 6 string itch again?: cash my way or I may add some for the right Bass? Some specs for those unfamiliar: Scale Length: 35" (889mm) 24 fret 18/19mm string spacing at bridge Fingerboard: Rosewood Body: Quilted Maple top/Alder body Neck: Maple three piece Pickups: Alnico-V Hum-Canceled Preamp: 3 band Gaucho5 points

***I'm not sure where exactly to host this post, I will endeavour to part out each of the videos in to the reviews section, but with over 150 here alone out of the 400+ I've recorded, it's going to be time consuming! *** For many, many years I have recorded what I believe to be high quality, detailed video demonstrations of great bass gear out in the wilds today. Unfortunately, many of those magazine videos went live without being shared or advertised. (Thankfully that has changed since I moved to Bass Player and Bass Gear Magazines) So, in order to get these videos under the noses of those who (hopefully) want and maybe even need to see them, I am thinking of ways to compile them for ease of access. Here are just 150 (on YouTube) of the 400+ I have shot over the years, which includes my latest videos for @BassGearMag - a brilliant online magazine. These links below don't include the full magazine write-ups and columns, but these should be available in the video descriptions. I bought the StingRay fretless with a view to seeing if it could oust my passive G&L JB-2 fretless. (I only want to keep the one fretless) I've owned a couple of Musicman fretless basses in the past and they are wonderful, it was just hard justifying keeping it when it cost me almost twice what the USA made G&L did. One thing about the MM is that I really loved the mid control on the fretless. I've tended to prefer 2EQ on fretted StingRays but the 3EQ was great on a fretless. Nothing that couldn't be adjusted for on your amp but with a fretless, better having it on the bass making it feel that bit more intuitive imo4 points

Apart from there being absolutely no reason to, you'd be at it forever. You have the pencil and template, mark outline on the back of the peghead. Take a pullsaw or hacksaw and cut away the meaty bits, don't try and cut curves; just a series of straight cuts getting closer to the outline. Clean away the peaks with a flat file then sandpaper smooth. Whole task takes about 15 minutes.4 points

Thought I would add my late thought on this topic.. I have had three NT4 thumb basses over the years..I now have a January 1990 NT4. Very comfortable and slim neck, weight of a small country 4.8 Kg (lol) Wenge/Bubinga. Transitional stage..old school back plate and dots on the wenge fretboard, but not scalloped on back of the headstock for the Schaller tuners..EMG replacement pickups for the original EMG's like for like. MEC preamp. One for sale at Bassbros at the moment. I have owned this Thumb for 5 years now, and have had not had to adjust the neck once! The most stable trusrod neck I have ever owned. I find the wonderful contoured body on the bass now works quite well with my 57 year old contoured belly (lol) The 89 I owned I deeply regret selling! This 1990 equally comparable.. 1997 version..just nowhere as good, neck profile broader, the Warwick fundamental thump no longer there.. If in the lucky position to own an NT4 Thumb, I personally recommend buying an older version..That said I don't know what the new ones are like, bar very expensive. ps If played through an old school Trace Elliot the bass sings!!4 points

We took our Bandeoke show to the Blue Lagoon in Bristol last night. First time there, and sadly a very quiet night. However those who were there couldn't have been more enthusiastic, one young woman even came up and gave us a 20 quid tip! The dearth of punters meant we basically played a two hour request show. I used my new HB 25th anniversary bass, Bugera Veyron into Barefaced Compact and jolly good it all was too. Just after we had finished the pack down a rugby team walked in. If only they'd been an hour earlier....4 points

Avant Guard 13 hole Precision genuine Celluloid Nitrate Tortoise Shell Pick Guard in excellent condition & never Gigged. Avant Guard are a French company that in my humble opinion make some of the the most beautiful & original looking Nitrate Pick Guards on the Planet & the Opalescent pattern just can not be replicated by plastic pick guards. These are very rare and Avant Guard are currently out of stock. They can be custom ordered, but are very expensive and can take literally months to arrive. This was a perfect fit for my USA American Vintage Re Issue, but should fit other Fender Precision Basses also. I can post to the U.K. Mainland via next day Special Delivery. P Bass not included in the sale. Took this out of the ‘pick guard box’ this morning to package it up and it was like this🙈🙈 - not the first clue how this has happened, it was in a packet, inside a box and the other guards are OK? Not been near a heat source either😢3 points

21. 2 years after I first started learning. The Magnificent Flying Sorcerers - original band playing Welsh flamenco cocktail jazz with a reggae twist. Dressed as little grey aliens in boiler suits. Except we were all tall and painted blue. With halved ping pong ball eyes held on with elastic that slowly tried to suck out our eyeballs as the set progressed. I still can't fathom why we didn't make it.3 points

A small update. After playing it quite a bit at home, in rehearsal and live, as much as the ability to blend in some bridge pickup is nice, I'm not sure that anyone would really notice it in the mix and that neck pickup is so nice on its own and way more pokey than the bridge, that the blend is somehow less. To this end, today, I disconnected the bridge pickup completely and have left the blend pot in as a volume control (it's a better quality pot than the original I think and the same value). It is instantly less noisy when you're not earthing it with your hands and I can just enjoy playing the neck pickup, which, unsurprisingly, roars like any P bass, but in a smaller, more quirky package.3 points

Thursday 29th May 2008 in Kilburn with a scratch band put together by the Weekend Warriors program. I was 51, having picked up a bass for the first time on my 49th birthday. In the 15 years since then, I've played just short of 500 gigs. Why do you think I'm Happy Jack?3 points

Just to push this over the line, £300, or £325 delivered to mainland UK or I will keep it, because it is a lovely thing to have around! (Looks on Amazon for another wall hanger!) I got this recently in a trade, and it is spectacular, if you want the James Jamerson thing, this is it. The neck is superb. The colour sublime. My problem is, is that it doesn't fit in with the music I am currently playing live. It is in excellent condition, wearing Detroit flats (I have also got a brand new set of Detroit flats I will throw in). It comes with it's original gig bag in good condition, also has it's original strap, which has some wear, but very little. https://www.basscentre.com/bass-collection-detroit-bass/bass-collection-detroit-bass-purple-haze.html#:~:text="Lightweight%2C resonant and extremely versatile,super-affordable price point." I was surprised by how nice these are, the fit and finish is really good, the playability is fantastic.3 points

One thing I don't get about the flat vs round debate is the thing about flats lasting longer. I mean when rounds get old they sound like flats to me. So, with that in mind, what's the difference between an old round set and an old flat set other than feel and cost of purchase?3 points

Just snagged a Warwick LE so this must go to help pay for it! Only had it 3 months from new - wonderful passive P/J style bass. Pro series hand built in Japan. Plays beautifully - immaculate as new condition. Will deliver over reasonable distance or happy to meet up. Buyer welcome to arrange courier.3 points

So I just put together a bass for a guy (really good player) who has owned a lot of Wals, including one of the first double-necks. He confirmed that my treble filter is too low, so I made up a prototype for him that just stays above the filter peaks. I thought it sounded thin until he played it (he exclaimed "there it is..!"). It really adds something without being in your face. So I'm going to update the filter I think. So it confirms that the 6k-ish HPF is the way to go for a Wal sound.3 points

Withdrawn from sale SWR bass combo 350w or 450 with ext cab Valve pre amp Hand Made in the USA and its LOUD and tighter than a gnats chuff, this is tight funk or disco at its best for an amp this size. ! and clear as a bell. well, i was going to keep this but its just sitting in the room, so decided to sell it, its all working great and has a massive sound, its like a redhead only bigger sounding. i think swr only made this upgraded version for 1 year, and its super rare in the UK and it will be a while before you see another one as good.. Here is my Spector RST5 bass - possibly the lightest bass I have ever played, and when we measured all the basses at the south west show it was the lightest bass there. Browny red colour, very soft wood so there are a few knocks (shown). Roasted maple neck, quite a deep neck compared to the Euro, normal 17mm ish spector spacing. Very easy bass to play and carry about, comes with a spector soft case. Sounds different to the other spectors with the EMGs, it has Aguilar pickups and preamp with volume / balance / bass / treble - good range on it. The jack socket was replaced with a switchcraft one as it was crackly. Happy to meet up within a 50ish mile radius of here, so bristol / exeter / salisbury way, also happy to find out about shipping costs. Anyway, got it last year but although it is a fine bass and no effort to play or stand with for 3 hours, I like it and often play it at home but just not tending to take it out that much (for no specific reason). As I am not gigging it that much and I have the Spector Euro, so thought I would sell it and maybe get something else - also happy to consider trades. Would be interested in doing trades with Spector Dimensions, ACG / Shuker / Alpher 5s (where the string spacing is a maximum of 17.5mm and not weighing a ton) or anything similar, also Rickenbacker 4003s/5, or just general 4003. All welcome to come down and try etc * I hadn't updated this in a while, as I was on holiday, but I am back now, so here is a discount and bump of it being still available!2 points

Holger Stonjek is a man that lives and breathes bass guitars and has been building basses since 1986. He has done it with such massive success that Sandberg is now one of the biggest brands in the bass community. The focus from Sandberg has always been to produce high-quality instruments at an accessible price point. Hence you get a great and well-balanced bass for the money every single time when you choose Sandberg. The VS4 is a P-bass on steroids! In Active Mode it’s a bass that’s more open and powerful than a normal P-bass, but when you play it in Passive Mode the sound turns into unmistakably classic P-bass with a beautiful sound that takes you back to the golden age of the 60s and 70s. The body construction is made of alder and the fingerboard is maple, which makes it light and gives a very balanced tone throughout the whole frequency range. The neck is more narrow than a normal P bass, which makes it very comfortable and the tone just pops out at you with ease. The bass’ single pickup is a split-coil from Sandberg, which brings the bass alive no matter if you play active or passive. The preamp is Sandberg’s own 2-band EQ Active/Passive, which plays a pivotal part in that classic Sandberg sound. In the Active Mode, the preamp is Volume, Treble, Bass, while in Passive Mode it’s just Volume and Tone while the third is deactivated. what I’m trying to say is that this bass is nice and is for sale price includes postage in the UK2 points

I'm 18 in 1978 @ Prince Consort night club Isle of Wight, ...in a very dark basement full of older teen "females" who looked on us with utter contemp. Its that awful moment when the Disco stops and you start and sound awful and everyone walks away....haha, dont think I have ever experienced fear like it since and I think Deni Deni was the first tune we played.2 points

Forgive me father, for I have sinned... No, after serious consideration, I didn't get one of those, tempting as they are. But in the process something else caught my attention and this happened: (runs away and closes door)2 points

Presumably the "short scale bass" would be one with a 35" scale.2 points

I have to remind myself at times that my Fender Rascal really is short scale.2 points

Maybe try just changing the saddle screws first before changing the whole bridge, they might just be a bit loose2 points

It looks genuine. I have one currently. The two I had previously I gave to the CEO at strings'n'things who are the UK importers of MM in recognition of their generous donations to the Herts Bash.2 points

Having been to The London Bass Guitar Show I’m surprised there are any angels left the amount of that that goes on there!2 points

Basslab doubleneck 5-string headless fretted + fretless. To see what the necks were like - if they were nice, I'd like one with parallel necks and the fretless on top. I'd also like to try a Ritter Roya 5-string.2 points

My pedal board for tomorrow night's gig. I'm going into their backline (a Trace Elliot combo). The Cali76 is always on, I use the Lucy Dreamer for most of our set, a few songs will be with no dirt and there is one song that needs a bit of distortion, which the Rattler is used for and with this I also turn on the Spectradrive as a bass and low mid boost because, even with 50% blend, the Rattler takes out a bit too much bottom end for my liking.2 points

The latest iteration of my basic bi-amp board. Some pedals seem to have found a 'permanent' home, others keep changing still but I'm definitely getting closer. The Ampero has three switchable effects and a tuner on the extension switch and is doing a lot of preamp, signal splitting, compression, noise gate type stuff in the background.2 points

Yeah! Got mine today! Really cool... lighter than my Harley Benton MV-4MSB & a tiny bit heavier than the CV60s JB that i have now on sale locally... Pretty noisy so i will have to shield at some point, but other than that, i like it. It does neck dive a little but i can live with it... I went for the white one with mint PG but would like to get a dark red/brownish tort PG in the future. If anyone here wants to swap.. i live in Spain, but i have a friend who flies back pretty often.2 points
