  1. Beautiful weather, we played under one of those " pop up" coverings to protect us from the sun . Nice crowd and the organizers a slipped us an extra $200.0 on top of our fee. 👍 No band pics, however here's a nice 1957 Ford Thunderbird from the show. Blue

  2. Nick and I donned our crazy summer outfits for some fun in the sun as we played an hour of gothic classics in the sun. The crowd was initially fairly small but picked up throughout the set. Some of the audience really got it, and a fair few recognised us from before. I didn't need to buy a pint which is always a bonus. I had my cheapie acoustic bass that I can never replace as it's screamingly good for the (roughly from memory) £100 I spent on it, plus played some mandolin, mandocello, backing vocals and drum. That's us done on the live scene for a month and we have other stuff to focus on (video / recording). Unless we get itchy feet...

  3. The birthday party gig was a great wee night altho i just couldn't get my normal sound. I still dont know why. So hot inside the function room. Great to see some friends there from our other gigs that also know the owner and birthday boy. Lot of great comments afterwards so that was good. Not keen on doing party functions with either band as not everyone likes punk or glam but we had dancers and cheers almost every song. BBQ was great too. Going back today to pick up the PA and bass cabs as didn't fancy lifting thru lots of sweaty folks to get to car plus car park was full when i arrived and had to use the overspill area (owners builders yard ) Seemed to quite loud last night. Think the guitarist tweaked his volume a bit too much once we started. Dave

  4. This afternoon the covers band, Night Shift played at the Cromford Meadows Classic Car & Bike Show, Derbyshire. We were slightly nervous about playing outside with no cover given the forecast of thunderstorms. But, we managed to get our three half-hour sets done and packed away before the rain started. The sound on-stage was a bit odd because of the glass panels at the edge of the terrace bouncing back sound. However, we got good feedback from the audience, so all was good.

  5. Really enjoyed last night's gig. I took my Black JMJ mustang with the orange classic vibe mustang as backup. The orange one has a vintera pickup and upgraded loom. I have also lined the cavities with slug tape and perfected setup. I have been enjoying playing this bass at home all week, so I was wondering how much difference there would be between the two at volume - so I played the first set with the squier and then swapped to the JMJ. Although the squier sounded good, the JMJ sat in the mix so much better. I don't know what's so special about the seymour duncan pickup in the JMJ, but if its ever made available as a spare part I'd like to get my hands on a few for my non-JMJ mustangs. It was also the first outing of my Monte Allum modded Boss ODB-3 overdrive. Having owned a stock one previously I really noticed the improvement in having the modded version - it makes it a lot more flexible and easier to get a decent tone - less fizz more grind.

  6. An early set for a friends birthday. We arrive and alarm bells immediately ring, we are to set up on grass in front of a PA rigged for DJs, outside in the baking hot sun... No flat surface for the drums, and as soon as we chuck a mic up its feedback city. Luckily the guy providing the sound is a smart and resourceful fella, he grabs the DJ monitors on stands and sets them up in front of us (a nice pair of QSCs which were more than adequate) then manages to cobble together a makeshift drum riser out of rack lids. We were on far too early, hardly anyone there but played really well - sounded good and a good test for playing in adverse conditions! The PA rig was particularly impressive - solar powered with a bunch of Tesla batteries, able to run for over 12 hours on battery power alone. In the bright sunshine was fully charged and easily still running 4k of bass. Off Grid Sound Systems if anyone is interested 👍

  7. Last nights gig was at the Quakerhouse, a fantastic real ale pub and live music venue in Darlington. Played my Lakland passive P bass through my little Ashdown ABM 1x15 Neo combo. Place was full from the start through to the end, happy punters = happy band 😎

  8. Sorry, I made a mistake on the price and I can't edit it. It's £1400.00. 3EQ Straplocks Stealth hardware Rosewood board This bass was made as a special order in 2018. As soon as it was delivered I joined a band that needed a 5-string so it never really got played. As a result, it's still in as-new mint condition, not a mark on it. It has a Hipshot D-tuner fitted and comes with a Music Man hard case. For those not in the know, the SLO special has a narrower nut, similar to a Jazz Bass or Sterling, and they are reasonably rare. Only selling because I can't play at the moment due to a damaged wrist joint from a motorcycle accident, and it might be a year or two until I can get a joint replacement. I have feedback on here, please feel free to check it out. Obviously, no trades, and I would prefer to sit you in front of an amp with a nice cup of tea if you'd like to collect it, but meetups are available and we can discuss couriers at extra cost.

  9. We played a private 60th birthday party last night in Gillingham (Dorset) social club. Pre-gig requests included 'Wipeout', (not on our current list but no problem for me although our drummer worked up a good sweat!) lots of rock n roll, and One Step Beyond plus our other sax numbers (me doubling) - all very varied but appreciated. Went very well, enthusiastic dancing, free food and drink and we've now got our new computerised Bose PA working well. Downside? Left home at 18:00, got back at 01:15... definitely cream-crackered today...

  10. After lockdown I joined a new band. Rock/pop covers. Was told before I got the gig that it may be loud and I should make sure i had a big enough amp!! (singers...what are they like!) Great band and do well on the circuit plus the guys are brand new....but at gigs..mega loud...at practise..mega loud! No amount of talking about it or moaning about it made any difference! The mixer was a sea of red lights!! I spoke to the guitarist in private about it and he went off on one saying that he had two expensive Les Pauls and a Marshall stack so he could be heard! I tried playing louder than the band which I could manage but that made it worse and my ears almost bleed! After a while though they seen sense and let me go as it''wasn't working out'' I believe it never ''Worked out'' with the last bass player either! Still friends with the guys as life is too short.......speak up!....I SAID LIFE IS TOO SHORT!!!....WHAT???????/

  11. I did that once few years ago but it was because the rest of the band kept turning up their amps and had no idea about overall balance. I couldn't hear myself and decided i'd just not play to see if they actually noticed. Have to say they didn't. I left that band shortly after. Dave

  13. I bought this fairly recently, but as I've just bought a new bike (I know, NOT a bass!) I need to recoup some funds. It's a Chinese made faux 'Gretsch' White Falcon, its been properly set up, it plays really well, it has a 'kill switch' on the upper bout, the action is really nice and low, no dings or dents, all in a great playing bass. Looking for £200 for it, I can post if need be as I have a few boxes (but no case!). Call it £220 shipped or £200 collected from Wickford, Essex.

  14. Sunday afternoon gig at a very hot, humid, steamy Donkey in Leicester with the Andy Wales Blues Band. Outside was about a zillion degrees and we were roasting to death in our tight black jeans and Chelsea boots. But the decision to play inside paid off when a massive downpour and thunder arrived a few songs in. The whole vibe suited our swampy blues and soul music thing tho. The only downside of all that humidity is that I now have exactly the same hairstyle as Gene Wilder.

  15. We had a rehearsal today which our guitarist couldn't make... So we went ahead anyway. And bizarrely, it sounded great with 2 basses, drums and vox! All was tighter, no widdling between songs and spending ages getting "The Sound". Any other bands with just 2 basses and no guitar? Hmmm...

  17. To the back hatch. You will note that there is always a bit of madness in my method when it comes to guitar and bass builds. Does that rebate rout above cut into the ebony strip? And doesn't that mean that the black line will be broken with an alder hatch when it's fitted?? Well...yes...and no. Yes it would if I didn't add a matching strip to the hatch I made my normal paper template with some A4 and a fingernail: Cut out with a scalpel, I then had a template for the wood that I could double check fitted properly into the rebate, and also a reverse template so I could choose a 'sympathetic' grain pattern from my various alder offcuts. This would probably work: So next job was to cut out the hatch - a teeny bit oversize - and add a matching ebony strip: To fit the hatch, I usually start at one of the curves and sand/check the radius repeatedly until it fits the rebate exactly, and then progressively sand the overhang from there at one side or the other to progressively create the close fit all the way round. It takes a while because you don't want to over-sand anywhere! But eventually, it's done: And the ebony strip lines up! Next step is stringing it up for Alex to be able to play it while I fettle the shape of the neck profile, and then I can start the final sanding and start on the finish

  19. This bass is in as new condition having been mostly kept in its case in a smoke free studio room environment, and has only been used a few times. I'm selling as its simply surplus to my requirements, it's a great bass, very playable, lightweight with a nice feeling neck and capable of a wide variety of sounds, but I have too many instruments so it has to go - for this reason, I am also not interested in trades. Bolt on Neck 4 string with Bartolini Pick-Ups Case Included. Collection preferred, (Watford area) - Shipping - I'll have to work out a price based on location

  20. An incredible bass for the money. Been my main gigging and practice bass for the last couple of years but fancied a change. Upgrades include - Seymour Duncan Quarter pound pick ups installed - Genuine Fender Hi Mass Bridge - Upgraded solderless wiring by blue tone custom - fully copper tape insulation. I'll also throw in an official fender strap too. Any questions please don't hesitate to message. Collection preferred from Stockport Greater Manchester - local delivery an option and so is courier (at the buyers risk). Cheers 👍

  21. Here we have a great example of a rare Ashdown bass head. This is a UK built 400 watts model from 2002 and is in superb condition as you can see. The previous owner was DGBass on here and reckons it is the best example of this amp he has seen and the man knows his stuff. Here is a quote from the man himself from when I posted it on the Show your rig topic last year. "Yes these amps used the same ABM power stage as the ABM's of the time used. I know this amp well and it's history. It was purchased new in 2002 by a dude called Nick from Wales and he used it in his band, Welsh rockers "Clipper" for nearly eighteen years without a single issue. It travelled all over the UK and mainland Europe in its gigging life. It ended up coming north a few years ago and was fully rebuilt/serviced and is quite possibly the best example of a MAG400 head in the UK currently. I used it as a rehearsal amp and gigged it briefly (between ABM's.) It's a cracking amp!" Always nice to know the history of these things. I`m looking for £150 collected from Paisley or local meet up. If you want it posted, I have a suitable box but you can arrange the collection and any insurance.

  22. 😄 I was in Baghdad while you were still in your dad's bag. I played in my first band in 1965. Some of the guys in my circle of musician friends back then were Steven Tallarico, Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton. Maybe you've heard of them? They wanted me to join them in 1970, but I was in college and didn't want to go full time as a touring musician at that point. After I got my degree I did.

So I just picked this (tired and dirty) Korean PEB65…. just before starting the work on it, I’ve discovered it’s what appears to be Medium scale… 32.5 nut to saddles? Odd measurement? Anyway, beautiful arched top, flame maple I think, trans blue with binding. Nicely carved and ergonomic, and a nice weight. Active too…. Which I wasn’t expecting. Watch this space

  26. Meh. After the last one with 4 Play (I know, I know) last night’s (Greyhound pub, Sutton Bridge) was so so. Singer man still not sure on arrangements and introduced his acoustic. Too many variables. Also: we play for like 45 mins and take a break… wha? No no no, just keep playing! Plus sides: I mixed the guitar and associated BVs at a sensible level rather than the +245dB usually favoured by said stringed instrument wielder. Sounds, erm, better that way! Three weekends in a row coming up with Clutching at Straws, the big boy cover band. Stocked full of musicians and able to make ANY room dance… two gigs next Saturday, following weekend Sunday afternoon at Rock on the Rec Stamford (45 min beer festival sets are what we were born to do. Start with Mamma Mia* and turn the wick up from there. Lights, PA, plug in and play. Few will emerge unscathed) and a wedding the following Saturday at our mate Malcolm’s personal pub. Excellent. Can’t freaking wait. As usual this weekend Fender Dimension > GK > Barefaced for the win. Betty needs new strings for her busy month ahead. * worth noting that Timbo and I Agnetha and Frida in the original key. We’re male, and in our 50s and late 40s respectively. I give myself an attaboy every time we play it.

  27. German built. Bit of a rarity this, as most $$ Warwicks are the cheaper Corvettes. Body: Ash Neck: Maple Fretboard: Wenge String spacing 16.5 mm This bass is in very good general condition. A tiny bit of wear, e.g. to the MEC logos on the pickups which have rubbed off a bit. There is a scuff on the underside of the bass as shown. This isn't a dent, more like a scuff in the finish, and it would probably buff out if it bothered you. Great variety of tones on this bass, you can get a very funky sound, not unlike a vintage jazz bass but with added Warwick growl, or you can go full on rock and metal. The narrow string spacing makes it very fast to play. Semi-hard case and strap with straplocks included. Only selling because I can't play at the moment due to a damaged wrist joint from a motorcycle accident, and it might be a year or two until I can get a joint replacement. I have feedback on here, please feel free to check it out. 29. The air itself could be responsible for tone changes, as it is through this medium hat the sound travels, and air density affects this, compounded by humidity changes. I doubt that the electronics of the amp would be affected (we use full-fat valve amps, and have done for decades with no such issues...). Just my tuppence-worth. Douglas

  31. Hello everyone ! I am selling some basses to finance a new purchase. Here is a sumptuous Jerzy Drozd Obsession 6-string named The White Walker (slight reference to GoT I imagine). It is in excellent, if not new, condition. The white color is just beautiful and the playing comfort of the neck is extra. The varnish is super soft to the touch and it's a real pleasure to play this bass. On the sound side, we're on something that looks a lot like a big modern Jazz Bass with monstrous lows and a superb growl, a kind of mix between Fbass and MTD. The resonance of the body and in the neck is also a real pleasure. The bass is well balanced and the body shape is really comfortable. Entirely handmade in Spain, these instruments are flawless in finish (those who know know what I'm talking about). You can still go down, and I set the neck almost perfectly straight to get a nice growl. Comes with the original Jerzy Drozd soft case in excellent shape, and papers. 33. Try as I might, my poor old brain can’t cope with 5 strings so I am moving this excellent bass on. I believe it is around 20 - 25 years old and for its age, is in very nice overall condition. There are of course some light scratches, dings and swirl marks but nothing that affects the playability. The colour is green or blue depending on the light but in my opinion more green than blue - despite the photos! The frets are in great shape, there is little tarnish of the gold hardware and the pickups still have Yamaha clearly showing. It has plenty of punch from the 2 band active eq. There is a new but fairly basic padded gig bag. Please feel free to ask for additional pictures or information. Shipping can be arranged, I have a strong guitar box.

  34. I really don't understand people who categorically refuse to own a signature bass. If it has the sound, feel and looks you look for, who cares? Maybe you dislike that specific player's way of playing, but you're not them, right? I have a JMJ Mustang which I bought because I wanted a very very good Mustang, and this is one. I saw a fellow Dutch bass player doing a regular pop music gig with her Troy Sanders signature PJ. I have no clue if she's a big Mastodon fan, but my guess is she just likes a silverburst Fender PJ. So basically my point is: a signature model isn't different from any other model. There's just a signature on the headstock.

  36. Me too - the guitarist at the time was going through a phase of having too much bass dialled in on his guitar amp. He would also refuse to do soundchecks (usually because 'we don't have time' or 'it looks unprofessional(!)'. I asked him to cut back several times. In one gig, I actually got at his amp and turned the bass right down which confirmed my suspicion and made the sound good. But for the next few gigs it was back to booming distorted rhythm guitar. So I would randomly stop playing, and I'd make sure he could see me not playing. He never admitted he was wrong, but he sorted his amp out.

  37. Picked this up the other day. A 12 string mandolin which I believe is called a mandriola. The frets are a little wonky in places and the whole thing looks a little skewiff but it's very nice. Looks home made, especially as the bowl of it is an old frying pan! Plays well, stays in tune, very loud and it's non-stick

  39. I gig the Torzal yesterday 2.5hr gig. The sound eng was happy with the powerful tone (no twisted notes..ha) I sing so have to rely on knowing position...forgot it was different...any errors would have been made with any bass As mentioned before going from 30" to this 34" scale..felt identical End of gig no wrist ace...and surprisingly no splits in plucking fingers. Thingking about this afterwards...I think the way it makes you flatten your hand, makes you stroke or pluck softly The only issue - the action was to low !

  40. Well family stuff and domestic 'projects' largely clear and so I'm back to the build I'm not quite at the final furlong stage, but certainly getting closer to it. Next jobs were to finish the rough carving on the back and getting ready to sort the control chamber hatch. For the carve at the back, because it's curved, I am mainly using the larger of the two round-bottomed Ibex thumb planes and also the gooseneck card scraper: Don't let anyone tell you the Ibex planes are toys - they really are precision planes: Those curly shavings are rock maple and ebony! I used a bottom bearing rebate router bit to follow the chamber and mark the outer edge of the rebate - but the curve of the back makes it difficult to get an even depth of cut and so the rebate was cut to final depth using carpenters mallet and some sharp chisels. Done, ready to create the paper template and cut the hatch:

  45. My main bass is a signature model, the Warwick Lee Sklar. I bought it because I loved the look of it. You'd be hard pushed to tell it was a signature model if you didn't already know it, as the marking is tiny, just the plate civering the truss rod. I think this is the same for a lot of signature basses, certainly P bass signature models seem to look pretty much the same (to me at least)

  46. Altho not strictly a gig last night with punk band Emergency Exit we played to a small intimate audience of family and friends while setting up the gear for a gig tonight in a friends very large house in Wanlockhead. He was having a birthday party for his brother on Sat night and said we could all come down on Fri afternoon and set up the gear, have a BBQ and a few beers and if we want to play a few songs even better so we did. I was driving as i live 25mins away so no beer for me. Back there tonight for the actual gig which is a freebie hence the BBQ thrown in last night for us. We occasionally rehearse in his function room if its not leased out that week. Cracking big house too currently building a pool on the end. Driving again tonight so no beers for me but the rest of the band are staying over and drummer lives in same village within staggering distance We can leave the gear there and pick up on Sunday too so no carrying lots of gear thru lots of sweaty bodies at end of the night. Last time we did this kind of party it went on until 4am. Way past my bed time especially when sober. Should be a great wee night and i'll update tomorrow on how it went. Dave

  47. Ok, so all cleaned up, fretboard oiled and a new set of medium gauge strings. Very nice indeed. Very comfortable to play, nice action (you could drive a car under it before, it’s no wonder people dislike guitars and sell them, because they can’t set them up!). OOF!! Crazy output, I wasn’t expecting that, almost Stingray levels of top end. No idea what the controls are, I’ve found Volume and tone I think, I guess another is pickup blend? No idea what the fourth one does, Treb/Bass cut/boost? Anyway it’s a fabulous thing, very pretty and very punchy…. so there’s some more investigation to do.
