Not really, but I recently put an order in with Thomann and added some Harley Benton flatwounds in to get over the free delivery threshold. When the parcel arrived I forgot I’d added strings to the order but I put them on my Jazz bass today and they’re surprisingly decent. Certainly an upgrade on the Fender cables they replaced. Didn’t expect them to be as good as they are. Not as smooth as La Bellas or Chromes, and certainly not as pricey, but sonically they’ve got a good old thump to them. No idea how long they’ll last, but as I’m not gigging, probably a fair while. For the price of a couple of pints of Guinness in today’s money these are definitely worth a go. 👍8 points

I wasn't planning on buying another bass any time soon, just got a CS Jazz with which I'm very satisfied but when this showed up... I've always wanted a late 60's/early 70's Jazz, with the TV logo, block inlay but with 60's bridge pickup spacing. I drove 3 hours, picked it up, took it apart (and put it back together) and took it home. It's a 1970 Jazz with replacement pots, bridge and case. It's also a refret and refin. But it's a lovely refin, the frets are good, the sound is thunderous and the neck is to die for. So, the 50th bass I've ever owned (yes, I keep a list) is my third vintage Fender. The colour is very hard to catch. It looks Lake Placid Blue, but it's more aged Ocean Turquoise. 1966 vs 1970: 1966 vs 1971 vs 1970:7 points

I’m a pretty experienced bass player. In a band and also the house bass player for a couple of local jams. However, I attended another local jam just as a player and got asked to play for this ‘interesting’ guitarist/singer. He wasn’t even going to tell me what he wanted to play until pressed, at which point he said it’s a song from the latest Sparks album and would probably know it! 😂 With that he mumbled a few chords, which I didn’t hear and he proceeded to start straight away. After about 15 seconds of this car crash waiting to happen, I casually unplugged my bass, mic dropped the cable to the floor and walked back to the bar. It felt wonderful. 😂7 points

The thinning of the herd continues..... Up for sale is my mint condition 2021 Lake Placid Blue American Original 60s Precision, bought from @Ander87. Strung with Chromes and fitted with a @KiOgon loom it sounds and plays beautifully. The original harness is included. The Maple neck has some nice flame and is capped with a dark Rosewood ‘board. The mint pickguard is a genuine Fender replacement. These basses (especially LPB) are not easy to find and on account of the Nitro finish, even harder to find one in such great condition. The case is in equally great condition and contains all the candy as supplied from new. I can ship this in a Fender box but of course collection in person is preferred. Please feel free to ask any questions or for more pictures.6 points

Hi all! Here we have my very recently acquired 2002 Musicman Stingray in a not oft seen 'Translucent Purple' finish. Allegedly only 50 made in this colour. Maple Neck. Ash body. 3-band electronics. Just strung up with DR Pure Blues. Really disappointed to be selling this as it looks fabulous, sounds even better and is in excellent condition (bar a scratch which the previous owner put on the back, from allegedly trying to open the battery compartment with a screwdriver 😳. However, it was advertised as being 3.5kg in weight and when I got it home, it's 4.6kg (to be fair, a ballpark figure for most of them, pre-specials) - having a severely damaged shoulder, this was not good news. I thought I'd try it out at practice last night just to see, but after an hour my shoulder just flat out gave up - so it has to go, sadly. All in perfect working order with the Musicman hardcase (also in super condition). Also comes with a mirror scratch plate if that's your bag. Located in Moreton in Marsh on the Gloucestershire/Warwickshire/Oxfordshire border. *Will not post* however, as previous deals will attest to, I'm happy to drive more or less anywhere for a handover, as long as you're not at the extremities of the country. It owes me £1100, so this is what I have it up for. Would consider trades for one of the following (and they HAVE to be sub 4kg examples and in good condition) ; Warwick Thumb BO4 and cash my way Warwick Streamer LX5 Warwick Corvette 4/5 + cash my way. Thank you for looking!6 points

Excellent example of @walshy's work, a black/maple P-bass, reliced as supplied. I actually got this as a trade from Paul for a Line 6 Helix, and was very pleased with the trade, but now this is surplus to requirements (I only use my '79 P-bass and a couple of LTDs now). So it's as pictured. As I remember (perhaps Paul could provide more detail) it's got a Bareknuckle pup, and has a Gotoh hi-mass bridge, not sure of the tuners but they're very precise & responsive. I've added Schaller straploks. I think it's good that it has the Bass Monkey logo, as opposed to a Fender decal. It plays & sounds superb - the Bareknuckle is nicely aggressive & responsive with a JJ Burnel feel to it, if I'm honest. So if you're after that Stranglers vibe ... I'm starting at £500 - a very low price for one of these, tbh, I think the price for these is usually > £1,000, but I'm aware of the current economic environment and although I'm not desperate to sell, I'd like this to go to someone who'd use it in anger! Collection from fairly central Bath, Somerset, and I'll deliver within 90 miles (thus avoiding coming into London!!) for nothing. Otherwise I can post, although I'd take the neck off & pack up that way. Viewings/auditions welcome.5 points

Half the reason we buy all this stuff is we read about it on forums or watch you tube and think we should have the next best thing… That aside we do change tastes too. I love my p bass but on a real jazz bass thing just now and have been playing jazzes exclusively for at least 6-8 months. Plugged in the p bass in the other night as I wanted to change the foam under the pick ups and tweak the heights to balance output between it and the jazz bass and did I not instantly play the bass bass for the next three days as much as I could 😀 Sometimes ‘different’ from what we’ve grown accustomed to is enough to make us think it’s the new best thing ever and make us rethink our rig. How many folk have pulled out an old dusty pedal only to have an epiphany moment that it should never have left the board but in six months time the one we took off the board will suddenly sound amazing again. TL:DR We’re fickle.😀4 points

Fender Cabronita Bass – Made in Mexico and dates to May 2014 according to the serial. This one has been modded by myself to match the specs of the Limited Edition Borrocha and Porazzo versions in that I have upgraded the pickup to a TV Jones Supertron which gives a much improved string balance with the blade construction rather than the individual pole pieces. At the same time as this I took the opportunity to upgrade the wiring to a KioGon harness but swapping the usual cabronita .22 cap for a standard .47 cap to give a smoother, warmer tone. I’ve also swapped out the Fender badass copy bridge to a semi spiral bridge giving a more vintage vibe and again more akin to the ltd editions versions. This matches the bridge that comes on the ltd edition ones too. Ive had both the squier and the fender version and the neck on the fender is far superior, a real nice vintage type neck with a nice solid depth to it. The previous owner on this one took the laquer off the back of the neck to give a smooth played in feel. Furthemore the Fender version comes with the vintage style reverse tuners. I have fitted flatwounds to this which gives an awesome beefy growl of a tone. These basses are certainly ‘hotter’ that standard P basses and have a more grainy/growly tone especially through a nice valve amp. Collection would be from Bolton or can travel within reasonable distance for a basschat style meetup Trades/part ex - * Fender jaguar modern player (black/white/maple black block long scale one) * Yamaha BB434 in black * Squier 77 jazz bass (black/maple/white blocks * an Ampeg SVT Tube DI would be really handy right now! Cash sale preferred but just throwing it out there3 points

Arriving yesterday as a birthday present from my very generous bass playing brother, a black cherry Spector Coda from his overgrowing collection. He has a penchant from luthier built and out of the ordinary basses so he offered this to me instead of the more usual birthday gift of a CD or shirt. I have previously owned 2 Spectors and I’m always impressed how well they are built and how good they sound. This is no exception. It has the Spector Tone Pump Jr and EMG pickups, what’s not too like.3 points

Off topic... I've never understood why so many Mac users seem to be content having having the dock at it's enormous default size and positioned permanently at the bottom of the screen. On all my Macs it is shrunk down to a size just big enough to make out the what the individual icons are and the applications I don't need on a daily basis or are easily accessible another way (like System Preferences) have been removed. Then on my desk top it is positioned vertically on the far right of the second display where it's not in the way of my actual work - especially as on wide screens where there is plenty of width, but vertical space is at a premium. On my laptop it is hidden and only appears when the pointer is moved to the bottom of this display - if I could find a way to hide it permanently I would.3 points

USA built 2001 Sterling (not to be confused with the Sterling sub-brand) in Blue Pearl with a bit of natural mojo/relicing to the finish, so not a mint example by any means but really nicely played in with a great feel - as a player I prefer this to a similar one I sold recently which was in much better condition cosmetically. Fitted with a fresh set of Rotosound round wounds. No case. Open for a cash sale or a trade with some 4 string and passive of a similar - ideally a P but maybe a J. What have you got? Thanks, Jon VIDEO-2023-05-30-11-20-33.mp43 points

I find that if there is tab on the page as well I never learn the notation - I suppose I am distracted by the easy option. To the extent that in my official tab books I have put tape over the tab to force me to use the notation only. But sometimes I write the note names, particularly if it is in a key I'm not very familiar with - even just the odd note name here and there to remind me of sharps and flats in the key signature. Like any other language, it needs to become automatic. The best description ever given to me was to compare it to reading English. We start by learning phonetics of smaller bits of a word and then stringing them together. But as we get better at it we don't do that anymore, we recognise longer patterns instead and can read an entire word as 1 pattern of sound. We don't sound out the smaller bits anymore, but we still have that skill for an unfamiliar word. Music is like that. We identify each individual note when we are beginners and the sort of stumble that note into the next one. But eventually we recognise patterns and each bar of music becomes 1 pattern / word in conjunction with the key signature. The real secret is how the practice is done. 5 hours on a weekend is pointless and tiredness / frustration gets in the way. 10 mins per day is only 70 mins per week but will lead to far greater advancement because there is daily reinforcement. One of the best things I ever bought was a bunch of used Double Bass sample sight readings examples / tests for grades 1-5. As they are part of the classical double bass process they are in multiple keys and time signatures, and they are usually only 2 or 3 lines long. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1860960340/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (there's a used one there for 1 pence (+£2.80 postage)! I just started working through them from the easiest ones as slow as I needed. Flipping between them is important as I wanted to make sure I was reading rather than remembering. I didn't write the note names on these as that would defeat the object but I did have the note names on a bit of paper that I could turn over if I was stuck. Some of those types of books come with a CD or a download link to hear them done properly, but there's also smartphone apps that will use the camera and scan it and play it to back. It just needs 10 mins per day of dedicated reading practice and in a year the progress that is made is beyond what anyone hopes for.3 points

Boils my urine when folk give you a weight in the knowledge that the lighter the better... and they knock a pound or two off to try and make a sale! I travelled from Northumberland to S Yorks to meet for a purchase and the 8lb bass (assured it was weighed on digital scales) as I lifted it from the case, it didn't even clear the case lining before I told the seller what I thought of him and his nearly 10lb bass! I've also bought sight unseen via various platforms over the last maybe 10 - 15 years and I've been stitched up several times and I don't believe for one minute that many of these spurious claims for a light bass are genuine mistakes. Fair does that weight is absolutely immaterial to some folk but when you have a bad shoulder/back and you specifically ask for an accurate weight because of this issue, folk need to be honest. Lovely bass and I know of one friend at least who is kicking himself that you didn't advertise this when he was visiting down the country. GLWTS3 points

The Housemartins. After a lot of success, ‘the fourth best band in Hull’ split meant two of the band, Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, went on to form The Beautiful South, with Norman Cook morphing into Fatboy Slim as well as forming Beats International and Freak Power. When The Beautiful South split ( due to ‘musical similarities’ ) Paul Heaton continued to record and perform with Jacqui Abbott.3 points

This has been my go to bass for the band I was in (Carnabyarmy.com). I've since moved away from London and winding things down with the band and really don't need the Ric anymore. This has been my go to bass for a few years now and has seen countless gigs over the years and is one fantastic sounding instrument. It's certainly not without it's cosmetic flaws as it's been well played over the years (always a good sign)! It has the perfect relic look that's all naturally acquired. The Good: This bass has the perfect neck profile (in my humble opinion). I've owned new Ric's and can say that this is much more of a shallow C shape rather than a chunky D like the newer 4003 basses. Frets have plenty of life left in them (I alwys use flatwounds). The neck is very stable and since I first acquired the bass in 2018 it hasn't needed a truss adjustment. That being said, the truss rods work as they should with no issues. The Bad: Nothing really. Except maybe to say it's "Badass"? Weight: 7.48 pounds (3.39kg) The Ugly: Well, someone thought it was a great idea to carve "CRUE" in the upper horn of the bass. I tried to source it to Nikki Sixx, but sadly no provenance in that one! I've sinced covered it up with an RAF sticker. Someone also thought it was a great idea to rout out for a jazz pick up when it was still a 4000 series bass. I've since had the ugly jazz rout filled in and added a shallow insert for a neck pick up and converted it to a 4001. The pick ups are an original Ric 4001c64 reissue neck pick up and a vintage reissue Ric bridge pick up tied into a Rickysounds wiring harness. It includes my modified saft shell (yet rigid foam) case that has the interior slightly modified to allow the Ric upper horn to sit in the case. It's a great case as it's lightweight by offers very good protection. I also have a set of retrovive pick ups I'll add in as well as the original bridge and pick up from when it was a 4000 series bass. I also have a black scratch plate and black Ric truss rod cover as well I can throw in. Definetly prefer local pick up or meet up between Hampshire South Coast or possibly West London.2 points

A friend of mine owns a back line hire company and keeps sending me pics of their bass gear. Which I can’t afford nor need but I will be going to play though some of their kit soon I hope. This is some of the SVT bass stuff he has. I know his dad used to work for Sugden amplifiers BITD IIRC and he is very good with electronics so together they have been able to keep them in great working order. He has GK and TC gear to hire out too. I am thinking it might be not good to go and play though it as I reckon nothing else will quite sound the same - but I have to, don’t I? (I won’t post the name of his company as not sure if it’s allowed? If I can I will do, any guidance?)2 points

This may help you decide which is best for you. It's the bass response of both speakers as calculated by winISD @ 100W. Surprisingly both are equally loud but the 8" cab will handle another 100W at this point, adding an extra 3db, and whilst the 6 handles all of the second harmonic upwards equally well there is a lot of extra fundamental with the 8. In a small room at home the 6 sounds way better than you'd expect, light agile and crystal clear and not as bass light as you'd think. Perfect for not annoying neighbours and satisfying to play. The 8 has a more authoritative sound though and is comparable with a much bigger speaker..2 points

And as you don't have to play the 1, you've got all that extra time to work out what chord he's playing. The skill I'd rely on is a bit rusty now, when I was playing in the house band at an open mic night I could read the guitarist's fingers.2 points

I despise the Blues Brothers' 'Everybody wants somebody'. Not so much because of the song but due to its amazing power to cause a headlong rush to the dance floor from lagered-up lads (who normally prefer to booze rather than dance), knocking everyone aside, leaving a trail of death and destruction and lots of bro-hugging. I joined an established duo, 1989. I didn't know most of the set. I had to wing it. I listened very closely to the first verse in each song, knew the key. There could only be a few notes in the progression. I worked it out as I went along. I became quite good at busking and have done many gigs like this. (but not for a while now)2 points

Actually it's no such thing. It's potentially an infringement of copyright/trademark, however I doubt that in 1973 Fender would have felt too threatened by a kid putting a sticky label on his bass. They had bigger problems to deal with back then - such as every Japanese factory turning out Fender clones that were infinitely superior to their own lazy CBS-era crap.2 points
