  1. Had an absolute corker tonight at O'Neills in Harborne, Birmingham. Typical Saturday night pub stuff, the place was packed and they loved it. You know it's good when the bouncers and bar staff are singing along. The drummer had to play standing up as he had eight stitches in his leg on Tuesday... he didn't miss a beat, possibly because he can't drink 'cos of the antibiotics. My IEM mix was perfect, so I got excited and came up with some new BVs on the hoof and I'll have you know some of them sounded OK. 70s reissue P Bass through the Sansamp VTDI sounded stellar as ever. A good nights work!

  3. We played 2 consecutive nights this weekend at The Apex theatre in Bury St Edmunds. Both nights sold out at this superb modern 500 seat venue in the centre of the town. Dreadful 3 hour journey home last night though, torrential rain all the way.

  4. A good one tonight down by the River Wye. It took the crowd about half-way through the first set to get going but then they were great. We tried some new songs which went down very well so we'll probably replace some older tired songs on our setlist. I played my Spector Bantam again and loved it.

  5. We played outside at a pub a mile from where I live. Good strong marquee ensured we and our equipment stayed dry, and quite a lot of the audience chose to join us in there. Got a bit of a boost when standing at the bar when we first arrived and the couple next to me said that they saw us in Witney two weeks ago, and wanted to see us again. Ended up with quite a few people dancing and plenty sitting around (some in the rain!) and enjoying the music. Apparently, the people in the pub enjoyed it as well. Got paid, got wet loading gear back into the cars, and wetter still when I was unloading a few minutes later. Played my Player Mustang through Orange LBT & Barefaced Super Compact. Unwinding and feel satisfied with the gig.

  6. Hello, regular guitarist here (Boo! Hiss!) It’s time I accept the fact that I’ll only ever be a dabbler at best on bass. I’m afraid I just love those skinny six strings, and as such my Stingray is utterly wasted on me. (Even that may be an understatement – it’s less Bernard Edwards, more one of Bernard Matthews turkeys if you heard me play!) I love the Starry Night finish on this model and just had to have one. Sadly, it’s since spent the vast majority of its life in the case as I never properly took to bass. I had it professionally set up less than a year ago to try and rekindle my interest but I haven’t touched it since, and what with my guitaring endeavours and a four-month old daughter, I’m not realistically going to pick it up again any time soon. On that “bass-is” (I’ll get my coat) it has to go (if only to make room for more guitars). A particular highlight on this model is the roasted birdseye maple neck – even I can tell you that it feels exceptionally lovely to play. I believe the frets are stainless steel too. Condition-wise it is excellent, I can’t find a mark on it (accepting that it would be very difficult to do so with this finish anyway). I would say a safe 9/10, excellent in terms of condition, the only mark down being for some tarnishing on the tuners. What more is there to say… I do have a Phil Jones Big Head and a Vox Adio Air BS practice amp that I’ll also be looking to move on… oh yes and it comes in its original EBMM hard case which I’ve stuck some music related stickers on like all grown up adults would do 😃 Happy to post via Lenspeed Logistics – it’s £55 courier delivery for most of England (please check the website). Collections welcome from Esher in Surrey, or we could meet up, or I could deliver myself if local. Thanks for looking, photo album here: https://imgur.io/a/lLd8KuI

  7. A scene from last night’s stage There is a short video on the venue’s FB page, of us playing, which manages to capture the moment where I play the riff a tone out 🤦🏻. Do I style it out? No, stick out tongue and laugh. I arrived last and so set up in the space left, the angle of the video camera meant that pillars obscured both the guitarist and keyboard player; I’m ok with it (bum riff notwithstanding).

  8. Second night of a double header, this time at Wilson's in Aberdeen. What a great night. Our guest "guitarist" joined us for a few songs, it was busy and folk were right into it. Got some great comments after the show and the audience were enthusiastic but respectful - interacted with us without pawing at the singer this time! Maybe picked up a booking for a birthday party out of it too. One for the books. Played really well, loving the Sire D5 (why did it take me so long to investigate '51/'54 Precision shaped objects?), it's a keeper.

  9. A pub gig for us and a bit disappointing really. All the hard work done on rehearsal, working in the new drummer, tightening up endings, etc, seem to fall away. Guitarist/BL constantly tuning between songs and taking a while doing it, drummer speeding up noticeably in certain sections (rather than follow, I held the timing and made him slow down, otherwise it would have been a train wreck). It’s our 4th gig and 1st for the drummer, folk liked it, venue owner liked it (although playing an ‘80s playlist during the breaks for a mod band was weird, especially as it was pretty much the set list of my previous band), but I’m just used to better. Hopefully, things will improve.

  10. Cold wet and windy at Rock’n’Ribs in Wincanton today, thankfully being on the Country stage meant we had cover for our enthusiastic audience. Set delayed and slightly curtailed thanks to the wind and rain buggering up the stage but we had a blast. Tartan Heart Belladrum next weekend, hope the rain holds off for that 😄

  11. Did a trio gig yesterday billed as Del Bromham's Blues Devils. It was a local charity affair for Willen Hospice. Really well organised and had a really good afternoon/evening catching up with old mates who were either friendly rivals on the old covers circuit or just people who used to come and watch bands from the old local scene. We were well looked after with refreshments and food and most of the kit was supplied. My mate in the previous band had said I could use his Hartke 4 x 10 and put my head through it. When I got there, he'd decided to leave his rig at home and use the house rig which was a an old Trace GP7 combo (did they do a 1x12 combo - or mebbe it was 1x15 on top of a 4 x 10. Unfortunately the 4 x 10 had blown a speaker and guys from the previous bands said the combo was farting out - great! So i set up, made sure the pre shape wasn't engaged, dropped the bottom and boosted the mids and got the Engineer (who's a local legend' to give me a load back through the monitors - and voila - not hi fi but great for grungy blues rock! Had an absolute blast and raised a ton of dough - and despite it peeing down had a great turnout too! Happy daze!

  12. BLOCKBUSTARZ Glam covers band at Methil ex-services club this afternoon 3-6pm. Gig was very busy and a great enthusiastic crowd who were well up for dancing. We had people travel down from Dundee, up from Kilmarnock and some even came over from Dunoon. We also had a few Americans in the audience and they all loved it. Lots of folks wanting pics with the band with all the gear on at the end which is always nice. Had a few people tell me that was the best band that's ever played in the club with one guy saying its the best band he's ever seen. Not sure how much drink was involved but i'm taking all comments Used the new Ampeg SCT7 Pro for the first time and i sounded great. Pretty loud amp. Feedback from people who know me said the bass sounded clearer than the Handbox WB-100 but that's fine and i quite liked the sharper, faster sound i had thru my Mesa 210 & 115 Cabs. Used the Sandberg VM4 today as always. Home by 9pm via kebab shop of course. Only pic i have at the moment is one taken by the singer of our dancers on one half of the floor. Dave

  13. Maybe I will regret it someday, but I think my Fodera has to go... 😪 It is a lovely bass and for its age in very good condition! Some minor scratches and dongs, but nothing too serious. Specs: Flamed Redwood Full Top Walnut Body 5-piece Ash neck Chestnut tone block Ebony board 33" scale Black Hardware 19 mm spacing at bridge Fodera Dual Coils with Ebony covers Matching Ebony Ramp Pope preamp Gewicht: 4.75 kg from 2009 Including original hardcase and tools. I prefer local pickup, but I can ship in Europe at buyers costs and risk. I can provide more pictures if you want to. Just contact me. I am interested in trades but in following basses only: - Ken Smith 5 String with neck through - P-Basses from Moollon, Olinto or Alleva Coppolo or Fender Pino Palladino. Nothing else please!

  14. Two soggy stages for ‘The Bridge’ yesterday. Gloucester Quays food festival and Cheltenham 7s rugby festival. Thankfully, both sets actually ended up being mostly played in the dry and people soon appeared for a dance and sing which was nice. ‘‘Twas a lovely day, with the shows being punctuated by a nice tapas lunch on expenses. Played my Ibanez soundgears on both sets, SR1200 on 1 and my salvage project SR500 on set 2, both just through IEMs. The PA system at Cheltenham 7s was really powerful with a great sound. Some radio 1 DJ was on after us and it made me chuckle that even on a stage that big, the DJ still seemed to have taken up all the space and plugs! Seemed a lot of kit for a memory stick! She wasn’t even mixing, just playing songs one after another like a ‘Now’ compilation 😂.

  15. Decided to put this one up for sale/trade as it's unlikely to get used due to already having 3 jazz basses. So why so cheap? Well cosmetically its far from the best, yet plays great! The bad: When i got it i set out to change the decal as, like many, i really didn't like that RSD logo. The job was going well, so thought I'd age the slightly anemic neck with a bit of some tint - big mistake!. Unfortunately the tint i got off Amazon was truly terrible as it went a horrible orange despite light coats. I eventually sanded this off leaving the neck dare i say a bit 'grubby' - that said it plays absolutely fine and is very smooth indeed. It has had a tung oil light coat since. The next disaster was upon fitting my German Sadwosky Pre with VTC when the soldering iron fell against the body whilst popping to the loo...doh! See pic of pea sized burn by the control plate. There is also various hairline scratches, a small dink around the arm rest, and more visual scratches around the jack socket and top of headstock -again nothing that effects playability, all cosmetic. I since sold the original preamp and pickups and used my Sadowsky pre in another bass, so this was eventually made as passive. It has a Seymour Duncan in the neck and a generic in the bridge - sounds really good, the slap tone in particular. Obviously a new owner could put another pre in as the side jack and battery compartment are present. The good, The neck plays lovely, low action with no buzzes. The weight is only 8lbs so nice and light. The tone as i say is really good, surprisingly good in fact. Excellent Sadowsky tuners and bridge, upgraded string retainer like on the US models. Sadowsky adjustable nut. Truss rod is perfect. Passive controls are from a Squier CV bass. Will thrown in an old Warwick gig bag for the transport if necessary. As i say i have too many jazzes so would entertain a trade for a non jazz bass , or TC Elf, and could add up to £200 to a deal (despite currently trying to save pennies ahem!) I also have a Markbass 2x10" Traveler cab i could lose too. Other than that £200 gets it within the UK.

  16. Played at the Square Chapel in Halifax with Dire Streets, having depped with them on rhythm guitar the night before. Near enough a full house, and a very appreciative audience, including Mrs Axe (who took these snaps). The D-Roc sounded great through my ampless setup, and considering nobody is trying to look like Mark Knopfler or any of the band, it would be hard to argue that the D-Roc looked 'wrong'. Plus it almost matched the drum kit...

  17. Back to the John Peel Centre last night for a funky evening with the The Gray Project This is the stage set up for the support band. My kit is hiding behind after we had sound checks. It was great fun, good sound, nice monitor mix, a great sound engineer and small-ish but very friendly appreciative crowd. I was very tired, having had a 4:30am start for my day job and then playing from 9-10:30pm straight through, fuelled by a massive kebab and chips after sound checking, then loading out and driving home arriving after midnight. A proper coffee and carbs day.

  18. We had two gigs yesterday, a teatime 45 minute slot at a mini-festival in Swindon followed by a 2x1hr gig in Bradford on Avon. The Swindon gig was outstanding for me, for all the wrong reasons… for the first time in nearly 40 years of gigging, I didn’t get to the venue in time. I set off 2 hours before stage time on a journey that should have taken an hour… thanks to a road closure which saw me sat immobile on a dual carriageway for an hour and crawling for the rest, the trip took me 2.5 hours. Luckily one of our guitarists plays bass and deps for me on gig dates I can’t make, he was able to borrow a bass and the show went on. I eventually arrived 3 songs before the end. They sounded great 😄 Thankfully , the later Bradford gig was an absolute belter.

  21. The last year has been ... difficult! Fire destroying my flat, a back injury meaning that I am no longer able to work as an ICU bedside nurse and 'artistic differences' with a band I'd played in for 7 years. The support here on BC has been, well, I've no words! Thank you! xx My flat is scheduled to be restored by 11-Sep, 13 months after the fire! The builders have said that they are going to be able to cover the cost of a carpet which is amazing. The insurance are going to pay for me moving back (which is surprisingly expensive even tho it is just about 100m oer the road!) as well as the professional exit clean from my temporary rental. And this morning, I interview for a clinical Research Nurse (Cardiology) role and heard this afternoon that I have been offered the position, a big change ... but the "office hours" and lack of need to do a lot of moving of patients are just the ticket for my physical capabilities; but there are loads of things to learn and a lot of patient contact so my mind and my heart will still be fed! And the new band is slowly but surely moving forwards! S'manth x

  23. Played a gig with my regular wedding band last night. We've been using IEMs since last year but I've always had my cab with me as I was coming out FOH. However, we have a new PA with subs and I've been toying with the idea of dropping the cab altogether and maybe getting on of the Eich Bass Boards. As a test I muted my amp (bass goes to the board via my Noble DI) and I was surprised by how little I missed the amp. In fairness, this isn't our usual PA (different MD who has to bring the PA, don't ask, I know its weird), but I'm tempted to save the weight and the space on stage. Will probably always bring my cab tho... just in case.

Currently touring with Joss Stone and Jethro Tull. Chuck is still with Billy Joel Blue

  28. Coniston Sports & Social club last night. Our drummer has retired up there and so we made a night of it, brought the families and had a good time in the rain. Really happy that my kids got to see us play before the band wraps up at the end of the year. Got them up on stage for a couple of pics too. We played well and the dancefloor was full all night. Although I can't really drink and play, I had a couple during the set and it was nice not to worry about driving home after. My rig was the usual: Ibanez 1005sms (loving the low weight of the ibby), Ashdown Rm500 and a TKS 212. It was a really easy room to eq and the sound was good.

  33. I’d like to have had more confidence and self belief when I was younger and people were telling me it was fine to have music as a hobby but to get a real job. As it turns out playing music has been the one constant in my life since I was 12 (including some of those people who gave me their helpful “advice” and have long since gone…). Far more important than just a hobby - a massive part of my life and something that has got me through a lot of hard times, as my escape, my own form of therapy and nourishment for my soul.

  34. REASON FOR SALE, something has come up, I have Jazzes in Deluxe, Elite & Ultra, this one is the "sacrificial lamb". Limited Run in 2021, factory road worn finish in Nitro, matching headstock, stack knobs and (unusually for a 60's type bass) 9.5 inch radius. Pau Ferro fretboard (if it's good enough for Roger Sadowsky, Michael Tobias etc...) Weight 9lb 1oz. It's faded Olympic White, not as bright as it is in the pictures. I'm no photographer. Vintage style Fender hard case included (I would sell it for £800 with no case or gigbag). LOADS of info & demos on t'interweb. You really won't get many chances at one of these. Only for sale as long as the object of my desire is. COURIER, yes BUT buyer to organise & pay. Collection from Darlington preferred. I have feedback. Thanks for looking, Karl.

  36. Ours was a bit of a faff. Not the gig, the day leading up to it. There is another local group that we get gigs from sometimes, and we send things we can't do for them. Some time ago we almost formed one group, but that didn't work out. When we were in the process, they booked a gig in a place called the White Hart, 10 miles west of here. It went in the calendar. Come the day before the gig, and we are talking that we are doing the gig the following day, and someone says oh I thought they were doing the gig. A bit of a back and forth, and it was them that was supposed to have it, but one didn't want to do it, so we did it. Roll round to now, a gig at the white hart turns up in the calendar, passed through from the other group, no probs. Singer rings, talks to the pub, says we will be doing it instead. Comes the day of the gig, I have forgotten to put a poster up on all the facebook groups, so I ask what time we are starting, the drummer says 'they have already advertised the other group doing it, I say no they haven't. A bit of back and forth, and it tuns out, the other pub, called the White Hart, 10 miles east of here is the pub that they had booked and couldn't do, but now the white hart to the west is expecting us. Faffy way to start the day. Apologised to the East pub, did the west pub, wasn't expecting much as it is raining and the week before pay day, but turns out it is heaving and had a great night. Also I got to use my sign, even if I had to put it on the side as I cracked it

  37. I've roughly shaped the body. It's very light, which I was hoping for with this project. Obviously the hardware will add some weight but there's also still a fair bit of wood to be removed - roundover, control cavity, neck and heel carving, etc. I'm away for two weeks so this will be the last update for a while.

  38. It’s the fact that I have never ever had a drop out or any problem with them for years now. I’ve used others early on and had issues with them cutting out, especially the Line 6 G50/70 and even the Sennheiser too. Clashes on frequencies too when others in the band have used similar wireless stuff. Even when we all sound checked and selected different channels there was always an issue. Aeroplane mode on phones etc selected too, still has problems. Once I changed to the Shure, I never had an issue, drop out, clashes or any noticeable latency at all. Whether playing to a few hundred at a pub or 10k festival stuff, no problems ever. They just work, well. I’ve used multiple packs with one receiver on the pedalboard and they swap and select with ease. Oh and it has a built in tuner of course, runs off either the Noble or a Cioks DC7 and not a bother. I do use a Boss WL50 at home when I’m swapping between basses etc just noodling but I’d never gig it again. The shure is the dogs danglies. You spend all your cash on basses, amps, pedals etc, loads of time practicing, fuel to and from rehearsals/gigs etc, why wouldn’t you buy the one bit of kit that makes it work without any issues ( yes it’s expensive) ? Obviously just my opinion. Or a decent lead of course 😂

  44. That was London born, Ralph Sharon, his MD/Pianist. He was on the UK Jazz scene until he moved stateside in his early 30's. He was still doing loung/hotel gigs until a couple of months before his death. Another one who lived a long fruitful musical career. I believe he was 91 or 92 when he died. EDIT: My oldest boy noticed this. https://www.latimes.com/local/obituaries/la-me-ralph-sharon-20150412-story.html

  45. Not that I would want to wish myself to be older, but in a way I wish I was born ten years earlier! I moved to London aged twenty in the early 80s with just a Fender Precision and the hope to get in a band and do something. Had it been in the early 70s, there might have been more opportunities for someone with my tastes, talents (such as they are) and sensibilities. Then again, whether I would still be around these days is another thing!

EZ drummer and VGiron do the heavy lifting here , with lead guitar using Ibby 6er through Waves Gtr3 FX and my little 'Fleabass' stomping its way along the low end (warts 'n' all) . All in Reaper I tried using the Melda dynamicEQ from the free download but got lost in it., the 'tutorials' I found didn't really help me make any noticeable difference to the sound on mine , so it's probably just me
