Esquires in Bedford on Thursday. The stage is pretty small so Ferocious Dog very kindly agreed to share drum shells. The room was absolutely packed. It seemed to take a few songs for them to really get into us, but after a few they were all bouncing along. Ace gig The Boiler Shop in Newcastle on Friday night. We played here once before supporting New Model Army. It's a huge place and so well done, super cool. Ferocious Dog had managed to sell this one out so we played to a huge crowd. Best gig for ages12 points

Perhaps the person has googled but in the 20 million results there were dozens of different answers and they don't have the personal knowledge to know which is the right choice. At some point we have all been that person. Far better to ask a group of people who have more personal experience than trusting a random search engine. Being welcoming to people in a community is part of being in that community. Discussion is part of being in a community. If someone has a problem with such questions perhaps that community is not for them. There is little more off putting to new people than the 'elders' mocking a person for not knowing something. That sort of thing actively discourages the next generation and ends up killing the thing we love. Either answer the question properly or scroll past and ignore it.8 points

2 gigs this weekend, Friday night was the 50th anniversary of the Aberdyfi mountain rescue team and Saturday was a 50th birthday party held in Aberystwyth museum which is splendid old music hall complete with stage and footlights. Both gigs were fine but people didn't come for the music they came to talk to their mates. Fair enough but hard work for the band. We seem to get a lot of bookings of the "wouldn't it be nice if we had a band" variety. Not complaining, 2 paid nights out with my best mates and access to 2 very good buffets!7 points

we played the Butlins introductory stage a few years ago, the bands before us had a loud bass drum and a bassy floor tom, before we went on I politely said to the soundman, we're old school can you go easy on the bass drum for us? we had a great sound as various phone footage confirmed, funnily enough all the bands after us sounded good too6 points

This brings up an important point: one person should be in charge of all things PA, the one who knows the most about it. That tends to be the bass player, as the challenges of our amplification forces us to become knowledgeable about it. We don't have the luxury of being able to plug into just about anything and have it sound good. Besides, we're just smarter. 😄6 points

Don't think of sound engineers in an "Us vs Them" context. You're all there to work together. You want your band to sound good and, guess what, so do they. Introduce yourself, be pleasant and give them some idea of what you think your band ought to sound like. If you don't they have to guess. Don't tell them how to do their job and they won't have reason to dislike you but, also, don't be shy about telling them what you're looking for, politely, of course. You'll be amazed how receptive people can be when they're engaged in a two-way dialogue about how you all can work together to achieve the best results with a minimum of angst.5 points

I've played so many gigs where I think it's too loud, but I've never felt able to ask the sound engineer to turn it all down. I have asked for them to turn down the on stage levels, but sometimes in a small venue, the FOH is so loud you don't even need stage monitors. The problem is, if you're telling the engineer it's all too loud, then you're basically telling them how to do their job, and they're going to hate that. I wonder how people without crippling British Politeness handle it5 points

I agree with the OP to an extent and don't get involved however over on talkbass I see loads of people getting really arsey about someone asking a question when there may already be a thread about it and the tone is often harsh and a bit nasty , I love that on here people will always point a newbie in the right direction5 points

If it's important to your sound, you'll need your own sound person. A generic sound person will do what he/she thinks is best for the occasion, taking into account many parameters. Some will have enough feeling, or experience, to do exactly what's required so that 'your' sound' comes across, but it can only be guaranteed if you bring your own. The band is responsible for the stage levels, the FOH person is responsible for the FOH sound. 'Bring your own' is the answer. There's added benefits, as 'your' tech will know the repertoire, and can add or remove Fx such as delay or reverb etc 'on the fly'. Any use..?4 points

User error (whatever the bass equivalent of PEBCAK is) strikes again. The sound guy told me that he'd turned off the distortion setting on the amp. What I didn't notice though is that he'd also helpfully turned down this rather crucial dial: FFS. Anyway, it's back to using my own gear in December and giving my ABM600 its first outing since June.4 points

Feeling the love here, guys. 😂 Disparaging The Beatles has been a thing for as long as I can remember. Some think it makes them sound cool, some think it makes them sound clever, occasionally it really is just a matter of taste. And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. 💋4 points

The same could be said for this forum, lots of people looking for, and offering, advice on different things. Much of which has been asked before, several times. Not everyone has been engaged long enough to have seen it all before, it's not their fault. Just let it slide, it's not worth getting upset over.4 points

Yeah I agree 100%. Ironically I played as well as I ever have, but watching the videos back I’m definitely not my usual self, I’m not bouncing and moving around, not stamping my feet like an idiot. I guess we all play off the crowd to a greater or lesser degree.4 points

We played in Southampton at ‘The Hobbit’ on Friday night, and a social club called ‘The Martin Club’ on Saturday. Annoyingly we had to shorten our set on Friday due to time constraints, but had a great time with a small but enthusiastic crowd. Saturday however was nothing more than a paid rehearsal in front of the other band (Mutiny on the Beach) - I felt bad for them because they invited us down and we’re embarrassed by the poor turnout. We made the most of it though and had a great laugh all weekend. Mutiny on the Beach are gonna head up to Essex to support us at some point, so it’s great to make new friends if nothing else.4 points

It`s worth going wireless, standing out front when a song is going on and then when it`s stopped asking the soundperson what the words were on the chorus. If they can`t answer ask them to turn the backline down until the words can be understood. Often it`s the vocals that suffer in the inane attempt to have the worlds largest sounding kick drum and the then desperate attempts to match the backline to it. Getting soundpeoples to acknowledge that the words are important can result in a quieter gig.3 points

That's nowadays, innit. 'Back then', in Hofner land, things were (and still are...) done differently. It's part of History, just like tempered keyboards and micro-tones. One gets used to what one usually hears, and it's all good, anyway. For those that might not recognise this ^^, it's a bridge from a Hofner 500 violin bass, such as that played in the video shown in the OP. Intonation is done by choosing which slot to put the fret wire, and slanting the whole bridge to get the intonation as best as possible. It works as well as is/was required. How are violins and double basses intonations adjusted..? That's right; they aren't. It's all in the fingers.3 points

With any specialist hobby there are always newcomers. I'm in various online groups for various hobbies/interests including music, bass, photography, astronomy, hill walking, and bookbinding... If you're new to something and you've not been through the gamut of standard/common questions and queries, you're inevitably going to repeat what others hae asked before. FB is particularly bad since its search functions are limited and poor. Of all the hobby/interest related ones, the ones that I get most exasperated with are the photography ones. This arises from a lot of people getting a snazzy camera and not appreciating that it's not a 'point and shoot' device if you want to get the best out of it. The irritating ones for me are the local ones with the "when does Sainsbury's open" which can be more quickly answered by an online search for Sainsbury's... It's not worth getting overly excited over - I just scroll past the ones that don't interest me.3 points

Kylie I would go and see. Madonna - not a chance, not that I dislike her music, but I’d want to see a proper live show. Having said that, I’ve seen the ABBA holo show as well as the Zappa one and they were both fantastic. In both cases, I knew what I was going in to. Turning up to see a live musician faking it is not on my wish list.3 points

The fan in my MB200 went , and I started getting “ the pink ring of doom”. My repair guy discovered that the fan had become gunked up and stopped working , and that caused some major components to overheat and burn out. Including the power module. So I looked around at other amps , and then decided that the GK was the perfect amp for what I was using it for. Strictly home practice , sometimes plugged into a C2 Phil Jones cab , or with just headphones and a tablet plugged into the aux in. So I looked at amps that could handle both headphones and an aux input. I decided that if we couldn’t resuscitate the little GK I’d buy another. It survived the repair , and has run like a top since we got it fixed. Should add that the e500 has replaced it as the primary practice head , and I use a Hotone Thunderbass as a headphone/tablet quiet practice rig. So the feature set I was originally looking at has shifted a little. Almost bought a Darkglass Microtubes recently … moment of weakness , it was a great deal but in the end I decided I’m already well amped. And if I see an Elf for a good price I’m liable to snag it , simply because it has a great rep. edit I’m also curious about the new Ampeg line … and sometimes think I really should have a Mesa Subway head … it never ends. There’s always something.3 points

I’m a Warwick fan, but I agree. The price of them is just ridiculous, however, I think the price of literally everything is ridiculous. If we all just stopped buying these ridiculously priced instruments and stuck with what we already have, most of these companies would be f****** 1K + for budget instruments is absolutely taking the pi553 points

They got "Bela Lugosi's Dead" performed on two mandocellos and "She's in Parties" on a bass and a mandocello.... hopefully better than a kick in the eye, so to speak!?! A couple of the locals complain about us "turning the pub into a youth club" - considering Nick and I are both 50yrs old, I am tempted to use that quote promotionally!3 points
