Fine Lines, Tuesday night at Rebellion, Manchester, supporting "The Long Ryders". There was some initial trepidation, concerning the number of people willing to make the trip in to town to see both acts, but as it turned out, a relatively healthy showing managed to make the evening an enjoyable one. We were faced with the usual arms-folded audience members, somewhat determined not to enjoy us for the crime of not being the headline act, but we managed to overcome most of them by the time our set was complete. We went on 10 minutes later than scheduled, due to the late arrival of tue audience, but we still managed to clear the stage in under 5 minutes, proving once again that we may be rubbish, but we're easy to accomodate. Gratuitous shots:14 points

Hi I'm selling this killer bass. modification: The bass is wired like a jazz bass, vol, vol, bal tone, the selector still works. Everything works as it should. Some signs of pick on the top of the pg, very difficult to take in photos because of reflection of the laquer. It's a dream to play. 4.2kg Comes with the original case. No trades The bass is located in Paris.8 points

'Big Boss Board' is taking shape: BCB-90X Pedalboard: Tough and decent quality. I'd prefer if it had isolated power but the daisy-chain for this grouping is fine. LS-2: Being used as a A/B between two Basses, clean blend being another good use. For other uses I'd like it if there was the option to reverse the order of loops (switching between A>B, or B>A would seem a simple thing to implement and would open up a lot of sounds) . Otherwise though, all good - it's a classic for a reason. A keeper. TU-3: Accurate, bright, with a few nice extra features (2x 1/4" outputs, extra power output, battery). One gripe is the '#' isn't very obvious. A keeper. AW-3: Good features (expression pedal control, tap tempo, up, down, vowels), some interesting sounds - including some non-wah guitar like sounds if using two of the same vowels together, it could do with a volume and clean blend though. I get the impression it's more suited for guitar and an expression pedal. BF-3: I didn't think I was a Flanger fan but I really like this pedal. It is sort of a Chorus, Tremolo, Flanger and cocked wah pedal in one: On low settings it can sound very close to a chorus, but it has extra things like tap tempo, gate (tremolo), can set the frequency of the effect via 'manual' dial (with 'depth', 'rate', 'resonance' on zero this can be used to give just a mid-focussed cocked wah sound), and setting things high goes all the way up to full-on whooshing flanger. My only gripe is that the 'Mode' dial has four settings but all are in the range within a quarter turn of the dial (10pm - 1pm, each at a 1hr clock face interval), not a big deal but that makes it a bit tricky visually to tell if you are on one or the one next to it - if the dial was a 180 degree turn (e.g. 'Manual at 6pm, Gate at 8pm, 'Standard' at 10pm, 'Ultra' at noon) then it would be more obvious what mode it is set to. CEB-3: Nice chorus, perhaps a bit subtle for some, but I like it to add a shimmery sheen, the 'low pass' is great. I am going to sell it though as the BF-3 on low settings gets close enough. LMB-3: Clean sounding compressor/Limiter, good but you need to look out as some settings can make it sound bad (need to leave the enhance down, and don't put the threshold and ratio too high unless you want clipping). I'd be happy to keep it but I'll compare with a BC-1X at some point. All are pretty good, perhaps I'm too picky but all feel like some small low/no cost changes would make them great for me: LS-2 would have a reverse loop option, TU-3 would get a bigger '#' displayed, AW-3 added clean blend, BF-3 make the 'mode' dial 180 degrees, LMB-3 can lose the 'enhance' and replace with a something more useful like attack/release control or clean blend. Boss know much better about making and selling pedals than me though! It's a shame there's no easily available Boss Compact Para EQ and/or variable HPF, they are things I might need to be a traitor on. Next on the Boss shopping list is a BB-1X.6 points

Not much to report here. A bunch of sanding done. I’ve made the cavity cover and routed for it to fit the body. Removed the excess wood from the neck joint as well. That still needs tidied up and I should have done this prior to gluing the neck on. I’ve also increased the bevel in the back of the lower horn. I forgot to take a picture with the router burn removed but it is gone.5 points

If you follow my posts, you know I'm not a " I'm not in it for the money" guy. Far from it. I need this extra money. I'm stashing away all my gig money to pay my annual property taxes. I've had gigs that I wasn't looking forward to. They become a "get out and go get that money" proposition only. Sad but true. Blue4 points

I mean getting paid does take the sting off of a near-empty room a wee bit, but (and perhaps this is because I’m only just back into the scene), without the crowd it’s hard to enjoy the night. That’s why we play live, right?4 points

I was using this as a pedal-testing board until recently (which is why there’s a slight gap between the Stomp and Element). It’s a Rockboard (2.1 I think) and has a Cioks DC7 underneath if I recall correctly.4 points

*** SOLD *** EDIT 24/05/24 - NOW £450 ONO Included in this sale: Tech 21 Landmark 300 amplifier, foot switch, and power cable Tech 21 B410 speaker cabinet Gator 4U shallow rackmount case This head is a monster. Essentially, a two channel bass amplifier consisting of two SansAmp preamps (one clean like the RPM, and one driven like the RBI), and the ability to blend the two channels together with the footswitch (or use them independently). The XLR out works as a SansAmp DI box to go straight through a desk. Condition is great. It’s lived its whole life in a rack, and barely been gigged. Full description -https://www.tech21nyc.com/archive/landmark300/ Examples of others for sale - https://reverb.com/uk/item/70129308-tech-21-landmark-300-300w-bass-amplifier-rackmount-head-with-ar3-footswitch Example of the tones (not my video) - https://youtu.be/7aFtWXYoeVk?si=tz9IYbWGpWOGzE5U The cabinet is great, and capable of outputting whatever tone you’ve shaped. Exceptional for the mid-range frequencies, but capable of sounding great for higher and low frequencies. I have only ever used this cab with four string basses. Condition is good. Speaker cones in good order and working without issue. Electronics all good. Cosmetically, there a few scuffs on the back, and some edges, but nothing too significant (as photographed). Full description - https://www.tech21nyc.com/reviews/images/pdf_reviews/B410_bassplayer.pdf These cabinets appear to be rare in the UK (I have only ever seen one other in person). They RRP’d at $695, but I’ve not seen any come up for sale in the UK for a few years. The gator case is a 4U shallow rackmount case. Just like this one - https://www.bax-shop.co.uk/double-door-flight-cases/gator-cases-gr-4s-shallow-rack-case-4u (which is selling for £120+ new). It’s in great condition; I have only ever used the lowest 2U for this head. ALL ITEMS ARE IN FULL WORKING ORDER. They are all original, with no replacement parts. All items were purchased in 2010. I purchased the cab second hand. This rig has been gigged once or twice in 2010/2011. I have not played in bands since then; as such, all this equipment has been largely unused, or used for quiet practicing in my house. I’m downsizing my gear, hence the sale. It’s begrudging, because I love the sound of this, but it’s taking up too much space for me to justify keeping. PRICE £650 ONO. TRADES I have enough bass guitars, but would be interested if you were looking to trade an Ampeg Micro VR stack in great condition (plus a little extra £). DELIVERY/COLLECTION If you want to arrange for delivery, no problem. I live in Aberdeenshire, about 30 minutes west of Aberdeen. Happy to meet at mid-points for petrol money, or for collection at my house. I also have family in south Lincholnshire, northeast England, and Nuneaton. I could probably arrange a detour between these areas if it was useful. QUESTIONS? No problem. Just PMme! It’s been 13 years or so since I’ve posted here! If you want me to prove I am legit, happy to share my eBay feedback, video call, etc etc.3 points

Due to a major cockup from me, I managed to pull the cardboard side off a new 1Kg reel of black PETG filament. Never done that before. Bloody cardboard reels from Overture. This means I have a 1KG reel that I need to use pretty quickly. Trying to despool it and spool to a new empty reel is really difficult so thats out as an option. Tried that and it just doesn't work and tangles up. I need to print things with it or it will get tangled up and I'll just have to throw it away. It's currently on a lazy susan on my laser printer whilst I print some ears for @alexjbassist The water bottle is full of water to weigh the reel down so as the printer pulls filament in, the lazy susan spins and the reel isn't pulled off. Not bad for 3 mins of panic even if I do say so myself. So if anybody needs anything printed in black PETG and needs it in the next few days, I'll happily do it for nothing, just pay the postage. Size is fairly immaterial but the bigger the better I hate to waste filamant, it was my last roll and I'll buy some more, but its annoying to throw it away. Rob3 points

Given the way my kids are behaving at the problem, I'm very happy to swap both of them for a broken Squier bass with two strings and no fretboard. Rob3 points

Over the years (playing in covers bands, and especially in this current one) I've become completely immune to the levels of indifference shown by punters during the sets (especially the first set), mainly because the mithering buggers are all there at the end when they're drunk and we're dying to get packed away, with their 'One more song!' nonsense... As long as I'm being paid, I'll play to an empty room and not think twice about it... 🙂3 points

This is the essential argument for art. Why is the Mona Lisa worth circa $900M? Why is a Ferrari 250GTO worth $60M? Why is Christian Ronaldo worth $200M to play in a Saudi football team? Why is a NHS nurse only worth £30K per annum? I know which is the most important to me. The classic economic theory is a scarce resource and more people wanting it (who have a lot of money) than demand to satisfy the need. I have a very small collection of old maps, I have a Booths poverty map of Greenwich, an old foldable map of London from 1829, one of Derbyshire from 1800 or so and a few others. I paid very little, even though they are scarce, other people don't seem to want them, so they are relatively cheap. Thats the same economic theory as above. Booths poverty maps have attracted a lot more attention recently and their price has gone up around 10x from what I paid. However I'm not going to be able to retire and buy and island by selling it. I paid £100 and it's worth around £1,200 now. Nice but not life changing. Rob3 points

There's a few levels of semi-pro gigging musician. * Those who do it rarely and so they really enjoy it when they do it and it's not the centre of their life. * Those who go out every couple of weeks and that's enough. * The one I guess that I fall into - If it's a day with and F or an S in it and nobody's booked it off, we'll go out. * The 6 nights a week gang. Few and far between. I finished work in 2015 and took my Civil service pension a bit early. The band I was in worked solidly and the income topped up towards my salary with a shorter working week. The other two guys in my current band pretty much do this for their living, so I'm a bit driven to fill the diary up. I reckon a couple of years more of this at the pace we are at (I have a target date for starting going down to 4 gigs a month and maybe fortnightly jam nights), providing my health doesn't deteriorate, will do. Then it will be a case of slowing it down a bit. I get VERRRRRY tired, having had some more cancer treatment this year. Winter scares me with all the gear humping I do. The band's in that nice state of coasting along with an amount of following and reputation in our own area and we all know the songs and play them really well. It can be a lot of fun. We get on most of the time. We play covers and I can't interest everyone in the band in some of the music I like and it's frustrating. 'Never heard of Suede' they say. I'd like to change the setlist a bit, but it's getting to be like a night in the museum at times, due to the reluctance to join in. It's probably a case of one morning I will wake up and just think I've had enough. Or my body will inform me that I am going to slow down.3 points

Perhaps the person has googled but in the 20 million results there were dozens of different answers and they don't have the personal knowledge to know which is the right choice. At some point we have all been that person. Far better to ask a group of people who have more personal experience than trusting a random search engine. Being welcoming to people in a community is part of being in that community. Discussion is part of being in a community. If someone has a problem with such questions perhaps that community is not for them. There is little more off putting to new people than the 'elders' mocking a person for not knowing something. That sort of thing actively discourages the next generation and ends up killing the thing we love. Either answer the question properly or scroll past and ignore it.3 points

Was never a huge fan of Ricks, the dual-truss rod, the quite frankly hopeless bridge and just the look of them (despite Lemmy playing one) until I saw this video. I love Eddie & The Hot Rods and this is one of their most underrated tracks ...3 points

At the usual jam (which is supposed to be gypsy jazz) no guitarists turned up, but four horn players did. The result was more along the lines of this album (but nowhere near as good). Interestingly, this changed sound caused an audience member to request contact info. for the "band" and the landlord to suggest we also played in another pub he manages.2 points

This has reminded me of my run in with him (for a value of run in). I was fixing some piece of office equipment at TV AM and he was lording it up around the offices, demeaning various staff members. He came over as a pompous, little prat and I was just hoping he would say something sarky to me, just so I could let him experience the sharp side of someone’s tongue, who didn’t need to be subservient to his ego. Sadly, this did not come to pass.2 points

I’m a big fan of Boss compact pedal and have been on a mission to try to do what you’ve done above 👆🏻. I always end up reverting to some sort of multi-Fx to try and cram everything into one board: This is what I was using until I recently got a GT1000, which I hated at first. I’ve stuck with it though and now after quite a lot of experimenting and gigging I’ve got it setup just how I like it. The most difficult things have been finding really good compression and drives in the unit, but I got there in the end. I’m just using the GT1k for all my gigs now and leaving all the separate pedals at home. I love being able to edit the unit on my iPad via Bluetooth on gigs.2 points

Head out south west from London to Winchester and start counting big houses, or head to Blackheath in SE London and count the houses around the common and in the Cator Estate. I lived in Greenwich for 15 or so years and coached minis rugby at Blackheath RUFC, the car park on a Sunday morning had a lot of very upmarket cars, I managed to bring the average price down with my 59 Skoda Octavia There are a lot of very, very wealthy people in London and surrounding areas. £2-£5M bonuses are not uncommon for the top. When you earn £750K + £2M bonus because you asset stripped a company, £20K for a bass is chump change.2 points
