A few years back, I interviewed Paul Belgrado, a Belgian luthier who makes amazing basses. A bit retro looking and amazing craftsmanship. His basses have always been at the back of my mind somehow. Until last week, when I met him at the Dutch Double Bass Festival. I played one of his basses and was immediately sold. So, somewhere this week, this baby is going to enter my house. Specs: Thermo alder body, maple neck, madagascar rosewood fretboard, TV Jones Thunderblade pickups, Hipshot hardware, pearloid inlay and Luminlay sidedots. It's so light, so easy to play and it sounds so killer. Like a Jazz Bass but just a little bit fatter.16 points

G&L L2000 USA late 89 90 ish fender signiture pre fender law suit bass Well sometimes you have to let a few gems go, and here is one of them. This if from my G&L collection, and i have had this since about 92 when i px my stingray for it for the extra sounds it had over the stingray it was 2nd hand then but not used so its about 89 90 ish, i sold it once to a chap that never used it and kept it under his bed so i bought it back of him, Its in amazing condition and really belongs in a collection, it has fenders logo on the headstock which leo was forced to remove by fender, i do have along with its original warrante cards a letter which was sent to all the uk distributers telling them of the lawsuit and all G&L products will no longer carry the leo fender name, so here is a rareish bass that slipped in just under that date, its in its original case, also in amazing condition, it still has the curved finger board left over from the E series like they did on the early fenders and also has the "B" serial number like the early Musicmans, its all original and unmolested, and sounds great, i have used it on a few recordings and released tracks, and on one live tape, a shame to see it go after such a long time owning it but, we are all just keepers for now, so up for grabs is very nice getting on 40 year old bass in stunning condition not to be missed as i am sure it will be a long time before another as good will pop up. im not asking alot all things considered, just a fair price for a great bass, i will take a px for studio outboard gear, or a px/swap for a fretless L2000 ( Unlined fingerboard only please) i don't need other basses amps or fx thank you So...im looking for at the mo........ yamaha REV7 or REV5 Reverb units yamaha Pro R3 reverb, TC Finalizer, Electrix Mo Fx, Novation KS Rack synth G&L L2000 Fretless (consider jazz fretless unlined only) Mackie D8B Desk Mackie HDR OR MDR 24 track Recorders Old Roland TD5 drum brain (TD5 only) frontier apache adat patch Korg synth 01/w (not M1s) Nord Electro or stage 88 Nord synth collection is from ellesmere port only or org your own collection, but would pref it collected so you can try it. cheers all all his friends are sad to see him go, i think they are throwing a party for him... arrrr thats nice of them 🙂11 points

I find myself listening to less and less music these days, and when I do, I find I just fall back on all the same old stuff. So here's my idea. If anyone's interested. I'm going to start an "Album of the Week Club". This would work on the same basis as a book club. Every week (let's say Friday) I will use an app to choose an album totally at random from any genre or period of time. Then I'll spend the week listening to the album and giving my thoughts. I'm hoping to do this with as open a mind as possible as there are many genres that my natural reflex is to dislike, so I'm hoping to broaden my horizons and listen to things that I wouldn't ordinarily be interested in. Of course there's also the chance that the generator could choose one of my favourite albums. That's the luck of the draw. So, anyone else stuck in a musical rut and fancy joining me on this little social experiment? The rules. I'll be using a random album generator app called Shfl (shuffle) to choose the album. I will then check to see if the album is available to stream for free on Bandcamp and provide a link. The first album selected each week (with a steaming link) will be the album I listen to for the following week, regardless of genre or personal taste. Until the following week when another album will be selected.11 points

For sale. A wonderful 'Greco' P Bass from the Japanese factory that produced basses for Fender back in the day. These basses are great instruments and are sought after by those in the know. This is a particularly fine example. Serial Number E 812272 dates it as a 1981 instrument (as far as I can tell) and you can see it's been well looked after by its excellent condition. Finished in a lovely three tone sunburst. Guitar was owned by the bass player from Southern England club band 'Creative Covers' and was acquired by my mate Nigel (Bumnote) from his Wife after the guy passed away a couple of years back. Nigel has, sadly, also taken an 'early bath' (April this year) and his Wife has asked me to sell on his Bass collection ( he had 11 - really had the bass bug). Interestingly, a previous owner (or maybe factory fitted? I can't tell) has added a novel string damper device that really works well - easy to use - just flip the lever and hey presto. A useful addition I think. Apart from a few very minor scratches and the odd ding (see pics), none of which are highly visible or detract from the beauty of the instrument, this Bass is in remarkable condition for it's age and I'm sure that the player who buys this beauty will be 'over the moon' with it. Looks, sounds and handles like a P Bass should. Good quality gig bag s included. I'd prefer collection/pick up but can arrange fully insured parcel delivery for an additional (approximately) £207 points

Valenti V21-J4 #146 Got this about a year ago in a trade with @dub_junkie. Will probably regret this but I've ran out of places to hide basses so some have to go! Swamp Ash Body Trans White Finish Graphite Reinforced Maple Neck Maple fretboard Pearl Block inlays w/White Binding 1-1/2" Nut Width Aguilar AG 4J-70 Pickups Tort pickguard HipShot Vintage Bridge, 19mm HipShot HB-1 Tuning Gears Sadowsky preamp with VTC control Very comfortable weight - will weigh in morning and update ad. https://www.valentibasses.com/archive2.html A couple of very, very minor marks but generally excellent condition. Neck and fingerboard have had gloss taken off with some wire wool so are satin. Could probably benefit from some new strings. Battery box has some cosmetic damage. Complete with Fender hard case. No trades, don't tempt me! Can ship at buyer's cost/risk or collection/inspection welcome from Orpington BR6.6 points

I did that once in a shop many moons ago (back when I still went into music shops occasionally)... asked to try something, the sales guy plugged it in and went wickety-wackity-wock (badly) for several minutes and then handed it to me. I played 5 notes, just the open strings, then said "nah, don't like it" and handed it back. Even if I'd adored it, I wouldn't have bought it off him.6 points

I bought this used from Bass Direct earlier in the year. I absolutely love the looks and weight but the neck is just a little too unwieldy for me. Condition wise it’s excellent. There’s one small ding on the back of the body and a few very minor, small marks which are pretty much impossible to photograph. Very little, if any fretwear. Hasn’t left the house since I’ve had it. Between 8.6 and 8.8 lbs on my electronic bathroom scales (only does .2 of lb increments). No trades, don't tempt me! Can ship at buyers cost/risk or collection/inspection welcome in Orpington BR6. I'll dig out the full specs but photos for now:5 points

I posted details of this Spear Flextool HPJ (3 pickup model) on this forum before jumping in and buying it since it was local-ish. TBH I was partly motivated by curiosity - what tones can you get from a bass with a combination of HPJ pickups? Think of this as a standard Jazz body/ neck which has been played with by someone with OCD who has access to a variety of pickups. Following my manic journey through scenic (sic) Harrow and dealing with local drivers using The Force to navigate the suburban roads I picked up the bass, which, TBH must have seen better days, no shortage of nicks, dings and dents on this baby! Also one of the pots was wobbly (easily solved) and the tone knob a bit scratchy so this bass has lived a life. Home, walk the dogs before plugging the bass in and checking out the tonal range. The pickup set up is H in the classic Ray bridge position, where you would expect it, P in it's usual sweet spot (or there abouts) and the J in the neck position. Each pickup has its own volume with the last of the 4 knobs for the bass/ treble. So VVVT. Individually each pickup gives an acceptable though not exceptional in any way, tone - remember this isn't a premium instrument - retail price was in the £500 range - but the pickups certainly don't let it down, especially in combination. My expectation is that the H will be the punchy pickup - not so - on its own there's your standard humbucker tones with a nod to your classic Ray but adding the P incrementally provides you with a deeper, throatier tone, the J adding cleaner mid tones. Lots of combinations, adding and subtracting each gives you plenty of range to play with and I'm pretty sure that there's something in there for most people. Obviously there are far more tones available than I extracted in the half an hour I played it but it certainly shows that there is a fair bit of versatility and range in these pickups. It's actually surprising that you don't see more basses with this set up. Needless to say I still have more experimenting with this - I'm going to suggest that there's much more to get from this. Stay tuned for further updates. 😉 😉5 points

Beautiful Ibanez in very clean condition. These were made about 10y ago then discontinued. Bound body with a fenderesque look, but very much an Ibanez. 24 frets, Active preamp, gorgeous ash body with a brown burst finish. Spec can be found here: https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/SRX530# £400 for local pickup. I’m happy to organise a courier and pack it securely if you’re happy to pay for that Nicely set up, stays in tune, easy to play.4 points

£270! This fantastic Sire Marcus Miller mild green is on for sale - I no longer play in bands/stage so I'm just keeping one bass and my Jad Freer Capo. No trades since I'm off stage. Comes with a Sandberg gigbag which as you know is very decent - this one is as new. Weight is great at 3.6/3.7kg if I remember well - no blemishes whatsoever, just a great P bass - you know how quick I jump to change electronics and whatnot but this one sincerely doesn't need it. Roasted maple, of course.4 points

For Sale, an immaculate 4 String Stirling (by Music Man) Sub Series Stingray. This Bass is in immaculate condition and was purchased new in December 2021. It's never been gigged but had home use only, even had the plastic film on the pick guard which I removed yesterday for the photographs. Bass was bought by my old buddy and Band Mate Nigel (Bumnote on BC) who sadly passed away in April this year. This is the second Bass I've advertised on Basschat as his Wife has asked me to sell on his Bass collection. I'm really impressed with the build quality and finish on this instrument which compares well with the much more expensive offerings in Music Man's flagship line. Lovely maple neck on this too. Active electronics give this Bass Bass an added punch and it really is a nice example. Just look at the finish on that Black paintwork - like glass. I've priced this to sell and a good quality gig bag is included. Go on, treat yourself for Christmas - you know you want to!! I'd prefer pickup/collection but I can arrange fully insured delivery for an additional approx. £20.4 points

Very well put together build I bought from @thebrigon here some years ago. Its in great condition, with no real wear or flaws, same as when I bought it tbh, as its been a much under used studio bass. it's a jazz spec neck on a p Bass body. back of neck has been left natural so no sticky feels. It has GHS flats on it still in good nick. I've changed the pups to SD Steve Harris SIGs. Bridge is a generic BBOT, machines are generics with the smaller backplate and turn and hold tune well. the route cover for the electrics is a lovely thing as well price includes functioning hard case and UK shipping, or knock £15 off and you can collect from Forest Hill, south east London. hard to know what to price it at but I figured parts alone are worth the asking price. Let me know if you have any questions4 points

Moogerfooger Bass Murf MF-105B for sale. It’s in good condition and comes with PSU. No box or manual but the manual is available online. I got it to try out on some recordings but it’s not something I need really for live use so I’m moving it on. These are discontinued and have become quite sought after as there weren’t many made. There’s lots of info and a few demos online. If you want that Moog sound for your bass well here it is. There is a filter section, drive circuit, envelope generator and LFO in one chunky pedal. You can add an expression pedal and tap tempo switch too. You can create subtle to OTT effects. Incredible fat bass sounds and plenty of control over frequencies with the filters. The animation pattern control gives you sequences that you can trigger with your bass. If you are into experimentation this is the pedal for you. One of the slider caps was missing when I bought it so I used a spare from the old replaced set off my Moog Rogue. UK only no trades sorry. I can post for about a tenner.4 points

I wouldn't say our playing is limited by our tastes. It's more that there are only so many hours in the day and it's very difficult to cover all the bases/become proficient at everything. It's pretty well inevitable that we will focus on what we like/wish to play. Over the years, I've picked up a reasonable variety of styles, but I don't see the benefit in devoting a lot of time to learning something I'm unlikely to ever use, although there are odd bits of technique that I've made the effort to work on because I felt they would be useful.3 points

I too am a hobbyist player , i play what i like listening too , or at least try to. I enjoy Primus so thats something to aim for i guess. I get drawn to tunes with a nice bass groove or a tasty line and end up attempting to play it. Quite often it leads me to new artists or groups i would not have listened to normally. My playing is purely limited to my abilities , which regrettably are not up to much. I'm working on it every day , even just a little bit, there will be improvements over time.3 points

Indeed... As a kid I was dragged to the opera, and the ballet, and concerts of all sorts ranging from Peter Katin playing Beethoven, to Askenhazy playing Rachmaninov and the Vienna Boys Choir doing that annoying angelic thing. I was told that popular music was only for the great unwashed and was somehow far below "proper" music. As a result, when I was old enough to dare to use my own brain I rejected much of classical, though I rediscovered baroque music, and also discovered more challenging classical that we never went to see or heard at home, such as Varese and Shostakovich (though my ma now likes ol' Dmitri, admitting she should have given him a chance years ago). However, I still can't be doing with opera - perhaps all that soprano nails-on-a-blackboard stuff turned me off most sorts of accompanied singing (as opposed to singing which is essentially part of the music).3 points

I've rebuilt the bridge now, the saddles cleaned up nicely and I bought new screws and grub screws, also rebuilt the control plate with new pots and knobs. Not sure what to do with the body, I've sanded it down and quite like the matte look so I might finish it with matte lacquer or I might redo it in metallic black with a high gloss lacquer, I've never painted a guitar before though so not sure how well that will go!3 points

When i drove down to the shop approx 450 miles round trip the guy in the shop wasn't overly interested but Mark appeared and all was great from there on in. The first guy left to work for Simms i think. I now prefer to talk with Mark when i call, not that i buy lots of gear but when i do i get fantastic service from BD. I've been to other shops and no-one takes any interest in you and i walk around for a bit looking at expensive basses and nope......no response from sales staff so i just leave and buy on-line. Guitar Guitar in Glasgow has been ok in the bass department and usually they guy is over and asks if they can help and if not right away just shout over if i need anything or have any questions. I like that attitude. I hate when i ask to try a bass and the sales guy takes it down plugs into his preferred amp and continues to play the bass and attempt to show off all the while i am standing there knowing my wife will be wondering where i am. One time i waited till the sales guy had stopped showing off and said "yep it sounds wonderful but my wife is waiting on me and i now need to go". Never got a chance to play that bass at all. I did laugh but he was playing poor slap bass for approx 10 mins while i was standing there. I'm 63 yrs old been playing bass for 45 yrs and know my way around a bass. I don't need some young show off trying to impress everyone in the shop. I've even waited and when i eventually got the bass to try myself i'll play something like "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" 2 notes to a bar stuff. You should see the look on their faces. Dave3 points

We played a gig once where they had forgotten to put the telly behind us off (sound was off though). Was on rolling news and something significant had happened in the Russia/Ukraine war so it was quite ominous to have Putin looking over our shoulders at various intervals...3 points

Now £225.00! I have way too many Rays, and I have just bought a US Stingray 5 so need to sell one to recoup some funds and make space in the rack. I bought this from 40hz on this very forum, and it is a really nice bass to play, and what a colour! Here is 40Hz original sale thread: I have put a new set of EB strings on and replaced the missing grub screw, all set up well and intones properly. Selling it for what I paid, but wont be heartbroken to keep it either (but alas, would be loft bound as my music room is out of room!)2 points

Hello Basschat! I've been a member for ages but I never posted an introduction, so I thought I'd do it now. Originally from Scotland (South east - Edinburgh / Fife) Now living in SE England, and yep, the weather is better overall... Bassist since around 1988 Early influences all metal and rock - Iron Maiden (many, many albums learned by ear), Metallica, Testament, Anthrax (lots of anthrax) and a lot more Moved through Rush (dared by a friend, learned many, many albums by ear!) and joined cover bands while studying in Scotland - now enjoying guitar hero stuff too - Satriani (Hamm), Via (Hamm), Hamm... haha Perth Music College alum More bands playing more covers meant I started playing pop and funk more - really got into funk. Chilipeppers, James Brown, Sly Stone (early 90s by this time) A lot of fallow time in the last 90s / early 2000s - just playing alone, which was in retrospect horrible! Got back into playing live properly with open mic nights in Reading, and still doing them now. Gearwise, I've got a lot of stuff... Amps include a Trace V4 (the all-tube V2) in a custom Zilla cabs shell, Warwick Neo Pro cabs, I have a Warwick Pro Tube IX 900w head, a Warwick LWA500 (which is amazing) and an Ashdown ABM500. Also Markbass Traveller for portability (use a lot on the pub gigs) and a Roland Micro Cube XL bass (amazing - 6 AA batteries and they last, too - sounds great!). Basswise, I'm up to 15 now, I think, spanning jazz, precision, weird ones like the Ibanez Ashula 7-string (which is gorgeous to play and great for flexibility!), 4, 5 and 6 strings, plus I have an Ashbory rubber stringed one (which works great for upright sounds live). Playing a lot of fun stuff, still a lot of funky stuff (http://www.infinitebiscuits.co.uk for the funky project!) and in a couple of function bands as a sideman, plus a lot of house band work for local jam nights. Gig 2-3 times a month, but I'd like it to be once a week. Want to spend a but more time in the studio though. I'm really happy to be here - this place is amazing. TTFN Andy2 points

Three hours, you say..? Team building..? It's a canon that you need, and what better than 'Frère Jacques', a song they will all know, but don't know that they know it. Get them all to do the melody line together, then split them into two groups, then three, then four, to build up the whole canon. If there's time, or one or two 'better' voices, pop a harmony line in there, too. Everyone will enjoy it, guaranteed.2 points

I love some repetitive stuff. I find it mesmerising and creates different emotions to more complex music, which I also love. I can easily start playing, eg, 'Good Times' and then find out hours have passed, lost in that trance. It's like my happy place (Ye gods I sound like a hippy! )2 points

One man's pile of steaming pig ordure is another man's Jefferson Airplane! And as all broad churches vary, funk ranges from simple barely syncopated pop music (though I would argue that this doesn't really qualify for the lofty moniker of "Funk", as the Great George himself said "You can't fake The Funk!") via the joys of Parliament/Funkadelic to the complex grooves of 70s/80s Billy Cobham, Herbie Hancock and Stanley Clarke... Still, each to their own!2 points

Great to see you making (rapid in my experience) progress. As people change their instruments (DIs, mics, etc.) then it changes gain structure usually. There ought to be a change control process (that's my IT career speaking). Getting everything into the FoH helps when playing larger gigs, or gigs where the FoH is provided (eg in our area Ruskins, Kendal). On stage set up largely stays the same.2 points
