Had a great gig at the Chadwell Arms in Essex last night. Had the option of playing their hall or the pub and we opted for the pub as it was more intimate and the crowd was enthusiastic but small. Totally the right decision, felt like a proper pub gig with the punters just a couple of feet away. We went down a storm and the landlord wants us back 3-4 times in 2024. Our first full length set (90 mins) and were asked for an encore. Am still buzzing this morning!18 points

I've never played a Precision, not a proper one. Let me explain, I decided when I first played bass that Fender just meant you were paying for a name on the headstock. Started off with a Cort, then on an idle day long ago when guitar shops existed I wandered into Mansons in Exeter and tried just about everything in the shop. I have small hands and thought the P's were awful but fell in love with one bass in particular a Highway One with Fender written plainly on the neck with MIA in little letters. I had to admit Leo knew more about guitars than I did. Full disclosure I later bought an American Deluxe P Bass and I'm in love with both basses and we are very happy together, me and the two genuine Fenders I swore I would never buy. However, there are so many people out there playing those simple straightforward P basses who sound so good. Could it be that a real one would be different from my fancy Deluxe??? Well like many of us I saw the big discounts on the Squier 40th Anniversary basses and for £250 I scratched the itch. I've had it a few weeks and 'oh my giddy Aunt, it's good'. I've been running through the set this morning for our gig and oh the sounds it's making. I swear it's not me playing it sounds too perfect. Tone controls all flat and straight into the mixing desk. Of course I play covers and I guess most of the covers I'm playing along with were originally played with P's so there is an element of 'rightness' but it also sounds so right when i'm playing with the band; the damned thing just sits there sounding spot on tucking in behind the kick but sitting nicely in the gaps the rest of the time. Playing it is gorgeous too, the neck is much wider than I'm used to rather than maybe the full on block of wood that some P's have but it's wide and flat and has a piano like feel about it, if that makes sense. I feel like I'm playing notes rather than fretting. It also plays fast and has terrific sustain, mainly though it is that gorgeous sound. OK it's a Squier and it has a C neck but to me it's a proper P and I'm in love again. Why did I leave it so long. Have I left my poor Highway One Jazz forever? Will I get distracted by the next flashy American I see? Oh the joy of P!13 points

The Daub'z went down a storm (again..!) last night supporting Parpaing Papier for the 'anniversary' of our local pub. Shared backline (theirs...). As luck would have it, their drummer plays 'leftie' too, so just a snare and cymbals to swap. It's very odd playing someone else's kit. Very, very cramped, and the place (it's small...) packed to the hilt and more, despite the wet, blustery weather outside. Inside, though, an ambience inciting us to play our best, which we did (well, no-one pulled us up on the few blunders, so...). A great night (again..!); we have to go back today to recover our PA we'd supplied. The Parpaings kept the crowd pogoing, too, so all had a splendid evening. No pics; maybe some will emerge later..?12 points

Terrific night last night at the Forum in Darlington with the Zep tribute. Great venue, good sound, decent guy promoting and, above all, a brilliant audience. Second gig with Phil (Didge Digital) on keys and about the sixth with Damian, the new singer, which has taken a good band and lifted it up a level. Great night...11 points

We’re called MLC (mid-life crisis) and our set is full of 90’s-2000’s rock/grunge with some metal thrown in. Stereophonics, Green Day, The Offspring, RATM and Metallica all make an appearance! We’ve tried to stay away from doing a setlist of *all* hits and gone niche with soem artists but we may have to rethink a couple. Example: we play Green Day ‘Longview’ rather than American Idiot or Basket Case, but on its first outing last night it was clear that the audience lost a wee bit of interest before picking up again with Nickelback ‘How you remind me’ Its a fine line in creating a set that doesn’t sound identical to other covers bands, whilst also keeping an audience happy!11 points

I believe this was one of the first basses, from Davide Cardone to feature this technology. The pick ups are Nordstrand Big singles running through a Meridian onboard pre-amp with Vol, Bal, Hi, Mid, Low, Active/passive switch, passive tone. Hipshot Ultralight clover tuners coupled with Hipshot bridge with 19mm spacing. Achieving an excellent combination excelling in tonal resonance, clarity and punch. Weight approx 10lbs This beauty comes complete with a very well padded Meridian Gig Bag for peace of mind during transportation. *Please note - As you can see from the photos, the tip of the stock has been dented while in the gig bag, on it's journey from factory, and has the indentation mark from the zip. This has not impaired the sound or playability as far as I can tell. This instrument has never been gigged just occasional studio work.10 points

TLDR: In search of my main recording bass. Dove into five Precisions and made some measurements, charts below. Hey everyone, So, a mate of mine suggested (probably as a tease, knowing him) that I throw my recent obsession onto basschat. Been neck-deep (pun intended) in specs of different P-Basses, and thought, why not. Might be fun to see what others think. I’ve embarked on a quest to find a new bass that I can call my main, especially for recording. I want to downsize, so I’m being quite picky, particularly about the feel. I turned to the specs and made some measurements, focusing mainly on the neck to understand why some of them just click while others are meh. I’ve recently had the chance to compare five models: MIM Deluxe Active Special, MIM Classic 50s, Player, American Performer, and Professional II. What really struck me was discovering that the Player and the Performer have very similar neck specs on paper. However, when I got my hands on the Performer, it surprisingly felt more akin to the Pro II neck. I'm wondering about the consistency between the US models (Performer, Pro II, Ultra even). I know for a fact the neck lottery is a standard "feature" on Gibson guitars... Speaking of the Pro II, it’s a fantastic piece of craftsmanship overall, but the neck is quite chunky. It made me question whether all Pro IIs are like this or if it's a lottery as well. Anyone else have thoughts or experiences with the Pro II specifically? The Deluxe Active Special has a Jazz neck. It’s pretty comfortable, and I tend to prefer slimmer, narrower necks. However, the rolled edges on the Pro II are something else; I wish that Jazz neck was finished like that. Attached some graphs for y'all, hopefully useful for a few of you. Shoot if you have some insights!9 points

Seems unneccessarily difficult at best and downright argumentative at worst. Not keen on hearing them try to dissuade you from learning to read proper notation if that's what you want to do. No spare bass amp? It's just lessons, a 30W combo would be enough. 5 guitar amps and 1 bass amp, I think that in itself suggests that bass is an afterthought for this guy. I hear alarm bells ringing, but maybe I'm being paranoid.9 points

Pretty much finished. While I still have to... -wait a couple of weeks before the final polish - intonate the saddle - sort a couple of fret high spots ...nevertheless, I think I may as well post the finished pics. Here are some of the 'pretty much finished' pics: When I've sorted the fret high spots, I'll record a couple of demo pieces so you can judge how it sounds9 points

We played at the Apple and Parrot in Torquay last night. Its been quite a few years since we were there. Now they have a house PA and always give bands a great sound. Its run by the bar manager who is an old friend of our eldest son, and they are in a band together. We played well and had a great crowd who enjoyed it as much as we did. Lots of compliments about our sound and songs. The on stage sound was a bit odd. My bass sound didn't carry that well due to the stage configuration but with the amp cranked up and plenty of bass in the monitors it was ok. There was an added bonus as bands are entitled to free entry to the strip club upstairs! I had to pass as i didn't have my wallet on me, only had a fiver in my pocket and payment was by bank transfer, so no gig earnings to blow!9 points

Halloween night at the Two Brewers pub in Shaftesbury, also it was the farewell event for the landlords who have been forced out by unaffordable increases in rental and utility costs - so far no-one is prepared to take it on, which is sad. It's a venue for alternative types (LBGTQ+) as well as music enthusiasts so somewhere we've always looked forward to playing - as it was Halloween there were some amazing costumes and makeup... and that was just the band It's a pretty cramped stage area there for a 6-piece but as usual we crammed ourselves in somehow or other- it was another milestone being the last gig for the six-piece as it was the end of the handover period between our departing rhythm guitar/vox and incoming keys/vox. So how did it go? The place was rammed all evening! We played from 9-midnight+10 with a short break, and it was crowd-pleaser time all night. I know Mr Balderdash metaphorically spits on us low-lives who want to, and are paid to, keep the crowds happy, but I get a real buzz from a positive audience reaction, even if it's to see them going mental to Sweet Caroline! I used the passive HB shorty with the Aguilar booster, but its PSU started glitching near midnight (overheating?) so it was time to crank up the AG700. Our new Bose PA system really does the business, but I must get some iems sorted for my sax set - so hard to pick up what I'm playing out of the general mix. A couple of pix mainly featuring our lead guitarist dressed for the occasion, with our singiste Georgie!8 points

Just got in from a 5pm Spacewasters gig at The New Cross Inn, a 3 day psychobilly event. Went really well, good crowd, a few of whom said we’d been the best band of the 2 days so far. Put in a few new ones and also given it’s Halloween weekend did Bad Moon Rising. A def success plus home before 8pm, unheard of!8 points

Great night for our debut at Halley's Comet in MK last night. Our drummer is quite poorly at the moment so had a dep who hadn't played with us for a while but he did a good job. Landlady very happy, paid us extra and promised a re-booking next year. No pics I'm afraid.8 points

Everyone's different so I'm not saying do this but i lost my daughter to anorexia 18 months ago. Playing the most discordant rubbish on my own really helped. The grief was easier to express through what i played it often ended in floods of tears which was actually helpful. When it came to gigging i just played for my daughter as though she was right there in the audience. Just to let her know i was getting on with my life. She would have so wanted that. Please don't think "I'm saying look at me, do what i did". I'm certainly not, it was just how i coped. Very best wishes Jo6 points

Hi folks I have decided to part ways with my P bass - I have begrudgingly accepted my role as a Jazz man This is a Fender Player series Precision bass in tidepool blue. Bought new by me in 2020 (I think) and well looked after. I changed the wiring loom to a Ki0gon one but other than that the guitar remains as stock. Tidepool is quite difficult to photograph, its got a slight metallic nature so it changes a bit with the light. Hopefully I've captured it quite well but please ask for more pics. I can potentially post this at cost but would vastly prefer local pickup. COMPLETE GALLERY HERE: https://imgur.com/a/w8EfLte £500 collected ***SOLD*** I'm not really after trades at all but a Boss GT-1000 or GT-1000-Core in part-ex would definitely tempt.5 points

In pretty decent condition, has a few light marks/dings and play wear commensurate with her age. All works as it should although there is a little earth noise when you take fingers of the strings, it might be my crap cable! Made In Japan The issue is she has a forward neck bow (please see pictures), the action as she is is a little high but is playable, on trying to adjust the truss rod there is no Allen key socket to adjust, so please only buy if you can figure it out, repair it or whatever. With that in mind lets assume the truss rod is not working or needs attention. Shipping UK £105 points

For me the beauty of the P is that it doesn’t have too much of anything so it’s very easy to sculpt into whatever’s needed - well apart from modern hi-fi sounds maybe.5 points

Chortle. My mum knew a guy who was at DHL when it was a smallish operation here, just expanding into Europe, so mid-late 1970s. He was always on the lookout for 'smart, intelligent kids' to courier documents to New York/Boston and back; flight there, cab (or picked up from the airport) into Manhattan, wait for documents to be signed, overnight somewhere if necessary, cab back to airport, fly home. It was cheaper to fly and pay a 14/15 year old rather than an adult and cheaper as you weren't on the payroll. Foolishly I never took his offer up, but a friend of mine did it quite a few times; he'd just throw a Monday or Friday sickie from school (he'd fly out early Friday morning and be in Manhattan around lunchtime), 'grumbling appendix' was the main reason given, all with his parent's approval! He'd take orders for records, so he'd come back with a rucksack of vinyl and always had loads of ready £££. He claims to have popped his cherry on one trip. What a life. I envy him to this day and he still has his appendix!5 points

Lovely Trace Elliot 250 SMX for sale - NOW SOLD please close topic I am the original owner, I bought this classic amp from The Bass Centre on Wapping in the late 1980s. It has got the fantastic 12 band grophic with a couple of presets plus the dual band compressor which will give you just about any sound that you could ever want. Seriously powerful amp, but flexible enough to use in any situation, I certainly did for many years! This is a very well made amp, and everything works perfectly in a very solid but manageable 15Kg package. I’m hardly gigging nowadays and only need a small amp set up. This superb amp needs to be used and enjoyed for many years to come. Thanks for looking.4 points

so i bought a second NYC with a view to modding, i got a hint from a fellow bassist i know from instagram and decided on the Diode mod called Supa Tonebender which is removing the diodes D1 and D2. really happy with sound lets a bit more bass in and the circuit. Next was a bit mad tho! i had a spare Damnation Audio Blooper (Bypass looper) and it was missing a knob and not selling so hey i thought why not! so its now hardwired inside and the jacks on the Muff are the in/out from the DA sounds killer and tonight im actually gonna add a tone bypass4 points

I’m starting to slim down my collection a little. This is a fantastic p bass and I’m sure will not disappoint whoever buys it. Bravewood basses are totally hand crafted both bodies and necks. The weight of the bass is 8.75 lbsJohn doesn’t build to order anymore so you could wait a long time before he builds another 58. The bass is currently strung with La Bella flat wound strings and comes with a new hard case. I’m not interested in any trades If anyone has any questions please PM me.4 points

Hi guys, For sale is my beautiful Maruszczyk Jazz Bass (reputation precedes). Hopefully the pictures do It justice. Its hard to get detailed intel on this bass as I believe many of them are made to order, and I bought It second hand a few years back. If anyone has any more knowledge or a way to trace using serial number I would be very grateful 🙂 Cosmetic markings shown in pictures. Few marks on the headstock, but rest of the bass is in great condition. Plays great, sounds great and the Aguilar pickups really pack a punch. Rosewood Fretboard Maple Neck 1.5" Nut 21 Frets Tortoise Shell Pickguard Comes with a Fender gig bag. Strung with DR Hi-Beams. To get a flavour of how it sounds, here's me playing a few years back: Looking for £550.00 ONO. Pickup in Guildford. First of all, sorry for your loss. I can’t pretend to imagine what it feels like, but I hope you’ll be able to find peace and move on. I had a think about the things that have re-energised me when I’ve lost some enthusiasm. Hearing a band or artist that was new to me , often on the radio. Putting an old favourite back on the record/cd player. Going to open mics or jam nights, meeting new people. If you live anywhere close to me, Derby, I’ll be very happy to take you out to some of my local open-mics and jam nights.4 points

Very well put together build I bought from @thebrigon here some years ago. Its in great condition, with no real wear or flaws, same as when I bought it tbh, as its been a much under used studio bass. it's a jazz spec neck on a p Bass body. back of neck has been left natural so no sticky feels. It has GHS flats on it still in good nick. I've changed the pups to SD Steve Harris SIGs. Bridge is a generic BBOT, machines are generics with the smaller backplate and turn and hold tune well. the route cover for the electrics is a lovely thing as well price includes functioning hard case and UK shipping, or knock £15 off and you can collect from Forest Hill, south east London. hard to know what to price it at but I figured parts alone are worth the asking price. Let me know if you have any questions3 points

Another vote for “sounds not the right tutor for you”. You mentioned “a fair bit of cash “ - before you part with too much cash for a series of lessons, it’s best to have a trial lesson with any tutor, to see whether you get on with each other and their teaching style. I know you mentioned that you are coming from a guitar background but I would be a little wary of any tutor who was a guitar specialist and thinks they can teach bass because of that. It’s a different instrument. Good luck with your search.3 points

I've never taken a lesson (for my sins) but some years ago I did give a few lessons. I had both a second amp and a spare bass (as well as a few other spare bits and pieces) to make sure if someone turned up with equipment that was, shall we say, below par, then they'd at least have a half decent set up to use during the lesson. I'd also take a guess that the chap you're speaking to probably isn't great at standard notation hence trying to push you into tab. Honestly, I'd say find someone that can give you the kind of lesson you want, it sounds potentially like this chap won't fulfil your learning needs.3 points
-
I think Neepheid has it right. I would be a little surprised if someone asked me to bring an amp to a lesson. An instrument and cable, yes, but an amp seems a little odd, especially If he has half a dozen. For low volume lessons, I would have thought you or he could use one of the guitar amps. You aren't going to blow it up at lesson levels. If you have one, take your SVT plus fridge along. It'll be a laugh getting him to help you lug it up the stairs. Also, the assertion that "tab is what is generally being used now" doesn't fill me with confidence. At the reading jobs I do, I am given conventional notation, not tab. I've never been given tab. I wonder whether he might he not be a reader himself.3 points

I had something like 10 of these basses (including Z II and Prism), and on the original fretless (not defretted) models the fingerboard is ebony. These are amazing basses and the Zeta piezo system (as it's a whole system including the special preamp and special V shaped piezos) sounds really really really good. To avoid any further crackling, just push again all the wires (and there are a lot) in the automotive fast connectors and everything will work flawlessly.3 points

The more observant of you may have noticed that I made a truly awful job of the carbon fibre wrap, mainly (I think) due to using a wholly unsuitable glue. Every time I looked at it, it seared into my soul. So I took it all off, ordered some leatherette and 250ml of Evo-Stik (formerly the sniffer's glue of choice) and tried to get it right this time. It is a definite improvement, albeit still not perfect. I finally got round to mentioning this because I have used it in anger, or at least mild annoyance, for the first time. There was an open mic night I'd not been to, and I took the cab, a Tecamp Puma 900 amp, and a bass with me in case there was a need for a bassist. It so happened that a couple of others that I knew from another open mic were there and both asked me to play bass, so I set up the amp and cab and - nothing! I swapped the speaker lead to the other socket and it fired into life (that was the mild annoyance). It sounded good to me, a full sound without the upper end bite that a tweeter gives, which exactly suited my needs, and it had easily enough volume to match the small PA and cajon that were in use. Now, do I build the 8" one too?3 points

I usually help drummer in with his gear and let him get started. While he's setting up his drums i'll rig up the PA cabs and lights. Drummer runs the desk so he sets the desk up. I run in mic cables etc. Once PA cabs in place i'll set up my own bass rig which only takes me a few minutes. At end of the gig i pack away my own gear first and then strip PA down and pack away while drummer packs his drums away. I'll then give him a ahand to load his drums etc into his car. To be fair we all work that way in both my bands so that everyone leaves the gig at same time except our guitarist in Glam band as he normally has further to drive than us lot and we tell him to head off as soon as he's loaded up. Most gigs he'll stay and help pack drums, lights and PA gear so its all very friendly and helpful. Dave3 points

When I bought my Precision bass in 1969, I joined an "elite" bass players club. Everyone on the club circuit played a Precision. Apart from the cool factor they were cheaper than the equivalent quality basses on the market, they were bullet proof on the road, all the guys on the US records played them and it was almost impossible to get a bad sound out of one. They were aspirational instruments if you wanted to be Duck Dunn, John McVie, Phil Chen, Carol Kaye, Jamerson etc etc. After nearly 80 years a Precision is still the bass of choice for so many touring bands. Probably for all the same reasons. I moved away from Fender when I switched to 5 string basses. They were late to that party and never really caught up, but I'd get another Precision in a heart beat if I went back to 4's. In 1969 the quality of cheaper basses was abysmal. Thank goodness for CNC machines.2 points
