  1. Great gig last night at the castle theatre in Wellingborough, first show with my new LFSys monza . Fantastic clarity and the fact that you can hear it very well from all sorts of different standing positions really is so refreshing. Very happy with it so far

  2. Two for the price of one. Bar a brief feeling of normality on a couple of occasions, I spent three weeks nursing the worst bug I have had in years so yesterday was going to be my Pheonix rising from the flames moment. We started at Vinyl Realm Music Shop, initially to 1 person but within a couple of songs, the shop was full! No amps and mainly mandocello for me. The owner described me as "highly ADHD" afterwards! We then went on to the The Southgate Inn in Devizes (same town) and did two sets. I was bass for the second set but the aforementioned mandocello, mandolin, one song on guitar and some lead vocals too! The place was jumping at the end. Who'd have thought an originals / covers 50/50 split of gothic music would get the bar staff bopping along and fill out three bar areas of people dancing?! I appreciate that people are on here for basschat but we did pick up a nice little local review. If I learned one thing reading it, going goth was a great way to get off with the posh girls... I never knew! Goth boys in Devizes

  4. Beautiful classic bass in great condition. Bought from Jay-Syncro of this parish last year, superb instrument but my dream bass arrived shortly after so this is not getting much playtime and time to pass it on to someone who will give it the attention it deserves. Here's what Jay wrote: "A lovely 80's made in Japan Ibanez Musican bass complete with a Hiscox flight case. This bass is extremely well built and features neck through construction, 24 fret ebony board, lightweight hardware and active electronics. It plays wonderfully with a recent set of Ernie Ball flats and a med/low action. It sounds great! Bad points are it has some superficial lacquer checking/dings/missing finish etc but nothing out of the ordinary for an instrument that has been used for 40 years or so! Also the bridge pickup seems to have a lower output than the neck for some reason. With the pickup pan pot balanced or favouring the neck you'd never notice it, but mentioning for clarity. I have considered modernising the pickups/preamp but IMO it sounds great as it is. A wonderful instrument." The bass is as above, photos attached show the condition and some zooms on the dings. Weight on my bathroom scales is 4.25kg. Happy to arrange shipping at buyer's cost or arrange a meetup within reasonable range.

  5. After many years of owning precision basses and churning through them I think I’ve finally found one that might be a keeper…. Its a Fender American Vintage ii Precision Bass, it just hits the mark of what I’ve always been yearning for sound wise but struggled to obtain previously - to say I’m very pleased is an understatement 🙂

  6. Had a bit of a reshuffle and went to a slightly smaller board. Gone from a classic 2 to a metro 24. The following is the signal path. Bight onion patchbox Sadowsky SBP1 DI/Preamp, (Donner tuner in the tuner output) SFX Micro Thumpinator- (under the board)to get rid of the subsonics 25 Hz and below, helps tighten the low end. FEA Optifet compressor- The ultimate pedal compressor, cali 76 and Diamond compressor sounds and more, a beauty Boss Ls2 - Back to patchbox and two loops to switch between. Channel A- source Audio C4 synth, six different Synth/ octave/filter/Bit crusher tones Channel B Aguilar Octamizer- fantastic tone with filter for octave and tilt EQ for the clean tone, tracks well. Cog Tarkin Fuzz- amazing Creamey Fuzz based on the green Russian Big muff, with a filtered clean blend (only clean lows) and mid control, and best name ever. EBS Bass IQ- latest blue label version, tons of variety and a funky analogue sound. Subdecay Baby Quasar phaser, great Analog phaser with plenty of control. TC Corona mini chorus - Tons of toneprints, currently on the "sweet emotion" setting

  8. An evening out in Chester with Fine Lines, playing at Telford's Warehouse. Almost had a major disaster, as I went on stage without my hat, fortunately our eagle-eyed sometime tour manager noticed it. Positioning himself at the side of the stage with said head-gear, I was able to wander over allowing him to return it to its rightful location. It makes using a wireless all the more worthwhile! I was really pleased with how we played and we didn't get bottled off, which is always nice. Had a very pleasant brief chat with @lurksalot of the parish, who kindly turned up to support us. Obligatory photo's below. *edit to add, my jeans aren't too long, my legs are too short!

  9. I've been trying to get the idea of a tribute to Cheap Trick off the ground for years (who?). Absolutely it is a niche market but Cheap Trick have been MY band for almost 46 years and I had to create this tribute as they were never going to call me! Long story short (it started 12 years ago LOL), I finalised the line up of CHEAT TRICK this year with 3 other guys who were massive CT fans... and it fell apart again within 2 months due to issues with the guitarist. In stepped the guitarist from my other covers band who is a technically brilliant player and he got us off the ground, mainly due to the fact he could write out and read the main song structures and was ready for a debut gig in 4 weeks. Sadly he wasn't a fan of the band we were trying to recreate and after a year of waiting for him to actually cop the style of Rick Nielsen, we had to let him go as he just couldn't understand that a tribute should at least be playing in a similar style (he's more Paul Gilbert/Steve Vai), a 1000 notes a minute isn't Cheap Trick! This week, we organised to audition a guy who we knew to be a Cheap Trick fan... BOOM! He walked into the studio and proceeded to run through 30 songs with us, emulating Rick Nielsen's style and chord/note choice to a 'T'. Not only that but songs we hadn't even asked him to look at, that he'd never tried to play, were handled like he wrote them. I have to say that I left the studio space with a grin a mile wide and buzzing to be chasing gigs this year to get out and about. Has anyone else had that Eureka moment or conversely that dread that someone in the band just wasn't the right person and you can't progress?

  10. Drove to limerick to play a show last night. 10 minutes before the first band started, the place was empty. I thought it was going to be a bust, but ince the first band started the room packed out. Smallest stage ive ever seen. Had to do a lot of Bill Wyman style playing. Great reception, great feedback.

  11. Short notice acoustic gig and I'll take it. "Hi Mr.Daryl! Are you available next Sunday for an acoustic gig? 2-5, outside of kewaskum " I responded with a "yes" and a " thank you" within seconds of receiving the text. My point, I bet some of you guys that book gigs have to wait awhile before you get a response . Daryl

  12. ***SOLD*** Hi guys, I bought this on a total whim last week. Its a gorgeous thing, nice Japanese build quality, 32" scale. However after playing it over the last week I've come to realise I prefer my full scale / full size basses so I'm going to move it on again. Yes, I'm a shameless bass tart. It really is quite small --- the body is pretty much the same as a Les Paul Junior (guitar) and from the top of the headstock to the bottom of the body its not much different in size to my acoustic guitar. "the internet" doesn't know very much about these---there's a thread on here from a few years ago where someone went "does anyone know anything about these?" and the answer was "no, but they look cool". Pretty sure they were Japanese domestic market only which would explain that. Complete gallery of pictures here (being slightly cheeky and re-using some of the ones from the dealer). https://imgur.com/a/ojHLARs The bass is 24 years old but is in good condition. Given the age there are a couple of dents in the finish, I think the worst one is the one on the lower horn, which I have tried to photograph. Yours for £250 collected. I can also post it, I have the packing material that it came to me in --- can probably only post on a Friday though (its my WFH day so I can be in for a courier). TRADES wise --- I'm not desperate for trades but something semi-hollow, or a nice J flavoured thing might appeal. Can potentially add cash for the right thing. QUICK SPECS BODY: Basswood. 13. I received this full-fat 120W valve amp from Handbox in August 2022. A combination of my then-band being put on ice and my more recent goth band only ever using supplied backline means it has never left my house, not even for a practice session. Its too good to have sitting around, plus the cash would come in handy. Comes with around c.£80 of extras, namely a custom padded gig bag/cover and a DI attenuator cable (which I bought 'just in case'). Not that keen on shipping given the weight (16kg/35.3 lb) and risks of valves being unseated/damaged by heavy-handed couriers. So its collection only from a nice public space/car park in the SW13 London area, south of Hammersmith Bridge. Specs here: http://www.handbox.pl/WB-100-ALL-TUBE-p150.html

  14. Aguilar's classic original design which put them on the map. Extremely versatile and musical preamp, which has been part of my high headroom rig for years. The DB 680 has two fully parametric EQs, (not semi-parametric), for complete tone shaping possibilities, a tube driven resonance circuit, tube effects loop, and variable balanced outputs. For the road, there’s a great sounding crossover, -40 pre and post-eq outputs for the mixing console and footswitchable (foot switch not supplied) inputs and master mute (leaves tuner input on for silent tuning). The chassis of the DB 680 is steel, and can withstand the bumps and grinds of a tour. Most importantly, the ten tube stages make for a sweet, warm tone and smooth feel beyond compare! The manual can be found on Aguilar's website: . Features: Made in NYC, NY, USA All measurements taken with a line voltage of 120 VAC. All voltages are RMS. All noise measurements are unweighted. Tube complement: Five total; two 12AX7A/7025 high-mu twin triodes and three 12AU7 medium-mu twin triodes Input Impedance: 1 M ohm (passive mode) 56 K ohm (active mode) Output impedance: Normal output = 1K ohm. Balanced output = 600 ohm Crossover outputs = 75 ohm Signal to noise ratio: -80 db Power requirement: 240 VAC/50-60 Hz. Rack size: 2 spaces Weight: 17 lbs (7.7kg) Case not included in the sale. Power Amp no longer available. Please message me to discuss postal options within the UK.

  15. Couldn't agree more. I have always bought my Mesa amps because they have been exceptional. I may be a Mesa artist now, but only my TT-800 amps have been bought that way. Of course it's always subjective but I have a spent a good amount of cash on a Boogie amp, but just once. In the last 35 years I have basically used 3 amps. I reckon I've spent far less than others have, chopping and changing.

  16. A similar thing happened to me once. En route to the gig and got the call it had been cancelled, so the band met up at another pub on the way. Where I had a chat with the landlord and booked 2 gigs there. So every cloud... 😆

  17. I am aware that this does not answer the OP question but it is kind of on topic. I recently realised that my concept of having different pedal boards for different things meant I never actually used any of them because none were wired up and ready to go. So I bought one of these https://www.thomann.de/intl/harley_benton_spaceship_power_60.htm. It is the bomb. No faffing with securing the power to the board (I realise that this is lazy, but....<shrugs>) it has extra USB power outputs and takes a kettle plug.

  18. My current band. I've listened to blues/rock music all my life, it communicates with me in a way most other music doesn't. The rockier stuff like Hendrix, SRV, Jeff Healey. As long as the guitar playing has 'that' edge. The reason I play bass is because I'd never managed to play blues guitar as well as I aspired to, which was frustrating on the one hand but opened up a whole new world of bass on the other. Anyhoo, I've always been on the lookout for a blues rock band but never, ever discovered a guitarist who could cut it. December 2018 I answered an ad in Join My Band - an Ipswich based guitarist with a drummer looking for a bassist for a blues rock trio. Own rehearsal space in Braintree - drummer is a farmer and has a huge old barn available. I was sent a video of him playing at a jam night and a few songs to learn from a longish established set list - I knew most of the tunes in the set anyway. Turned up for a 4 song audition in the March and we just all clicked - jammed the whole set over 2 hours. Over the ensuing months we tightened up, my first time in a trio and I absolutely love it. Alan hadn't been gigging for a long while, kids and Life etc, and the more we played the more he relaxed with the band and the more he started to let loose with his playing! We came to the attention of one of Suffolk's prominent guys on the music scene - Stephen 'Foz' Foster, who at the time was a DJ on BBC Radio Suffolk, now Radio Caroline. He kind of adopted us - puts some nice gigs our way and plays tracks from our live CD on his radio show. He has described us as 'one of the best bands to come from the region' which puts a warm glow inside. It is everything I have ever wanted from a band and worth the hassle of travelling to gigs. I am 66 now and some mornings feeling my age - got a growing portfolio of back issues and a spot of arthritis in my hands. All things considered I reckon it is my last hurrah and, however long this lasts, I intend to enjoy every bit of it.

  21. Hi Chatters, One I never thought I'd part with: Totally mint Limited Edition 55-60 Vintage Custom! Mine from new. Lake Placid Blue (slight sparkle to the finish) with matching headstock, Laurel board with pearl block inlays, bound neck, was a limited run, so a special order. John East J Tone fitted with chrome knobs, fully screened/shielded. C/W Original Lakland control plate knobs & pots included in sale/trade also strung with very newish Addario NYC's only a few hours playing time. Never been out the house. Absolutely superb modern/vintage sounding Jazz Bass and I really hate to do this, however circumstances dictate I have to let go of one of the collection. Cash is king, but willing to trade with a nice, but lesser value 5 or 6 string Bass or 500w+ Head (Mark Bass, Glock) plus cash? Local delivery or meet preferred, could courier at buyers cost/arrangement? Gaucho

  23. SOLD I bought this thinking that a small headless bass might a nice thing to have around; I've since bought an ACG that does the same job so sadly I have to part with the Ibanez. The Ibanez Axstar is a fairly rare beast in the UK. In my opinion it's one of the best wooden small bodied, headless basses of the era, similar to the Yamaha BX-1 in quality. It's pure 1980s in looks, it could be a prop from Total Recall or some similar 80s sci-fi. But the body shape is extremely ergonomic - it hangs in just the right place when standing up with no neck dive, and it also sits comfortably on your lap, unlike many basses of this type. Access high up the fretboard is superb. From the original brochure, the bolt-on neck is 3-piece maple, fretboard is rosewood and body is basswood. 34" scale. Twin passive humbuckers and a fairly chunky and industrial bridge and tuning mechanism. With worn-in strings, you basically tune it about once a month, if that - it's incredibly stable. You can use standard 34" strings. The truss rod turns smoothly and does its job. The neck is pretty skinny, 17mm string spacing at the bridge tapering to 11mm at the nut. Weight is just 3kg, because it's got such a small body, but it feels very solid and well-built. It's evidently been played a lot since the 80s and the body has quite a few dings and scratches and one chip through to bare wood. I've tried to show this in the pictures. The sound is very fat and rich, with the humbuckers giving pretty high output. There's a volume control for each pickup and a passive tone control - in all honesty the tone control isn't dramatic in effect. It would be perfect for 80s funk, but with the treble rolled off it would also be superb for reggae / dub, it's got this huge, solid sustain to it. It would be an absolute beast played with a pick for metal, with some distortion. I'm selling it with a good quality, almost new gig bag from Thomann which makes for a very neat, small package. You could take it as hand luggage on a plane just by paying for a large cabin bag - in the case it measures 109 x 29 x 13cm, whereas Easyjet allows up to 117 x 38 x 30cm for a large cabin bag. Happy to post it for £20, or collect from Bristol. Here's someone playing one better than I would, and giving a good impression of the tone.

  24. Great gig on Friday night at the brilliant Login Lounge in Camberley. We've played there a few times and it can be a bit hit or miss with the audience but this time it was pretty busy. The sound is always fantastic though and the sound guys really know what they are doing. During my soundcheck, the soundman said I was getting quite a bit of buzzing from my setup. I suspected it was my pedals but by going direct into my MarkBass LM IV and Barefaced Two10, the buzzing was still there. I'd just recently added a Sansamp BDDI v2 onto my board and suggested trying the DI on that. At that point an older guy who I think was the main sound man who wasn't working came over and asked what's up. The main sound guy explained and said we were going to try going through the Sansamp. He said that its probably their DI and going through the Sansamp will give a really clean sound and the Sansamp is an awesome bit of kit. He seemed to know what he was talking about and low and behold, no buzzing and my bass sounded incredible all night. Just as he walked off, he turned back and said, oh and by the way, your fretless playing sounds amazing 😁 We played amazing and the sound on stage was incredible, especially my bass. After the gig, I then got a couple more people come up to me and compliment me on my fretless playing so I went away super happy.

  25. +100 For those of you who appear to be poking at @agedhorse about pricing of Mesa gear CHECK OUT THE PRICES OF EVERYTHING AT THE MOMENT, basses especially, the prices of which are becoming farcical. I paid £1200 USED for my first M-Pulse 600 head in 2010 and IIRC around £800 for my first used (300w) Walkabout head a couple of years earlier. New prices were significantly higher at the time. And they were worth every penny in terms of tone, functionality, and reliability, as are the latest range. When you buy Mesa, and in the context of the price of competing gear at the time, you get what you're paying for 👍

  26. I had the first gig with my Monza last night. I have been using LFSys cabs since they started, going through the Silverstone then Monaco and now the Monza. There is nothing wrong with the other two cabs, but my old arms need a lighter cab these days. The 11kg is fine, and it fits well in the boot (car, not the better half). I will do a review another time, but suffice to say I was not disappointed.

  30. **SOLD** This incredible amplifier has been at the heart of my high headroom rig for years (coupled with a Aguilar DB680 preamp), and has always remained in a rackcase, so is still in great condition. It is heavy, so an ergonomic case does help. Official specs: The Hellborg power amps are set apart from other amps by the fact that they use a powerful output transformer at the speaker output of a solid state power amplifier (such transformers are normally used to match the impedance of the speaker output stage of tube amps). This is done to achieve the warmth and presence of a tube amp while maintaining the clarity and fast attack of a solid state design. The Hellborg Mono Power 500 has an output of 500 watts, the output impedance is selectable (2, 4 or 8 ohms). Power Requirement : 230 V Technology : Bipolar Power Amp with Speaker Output Transformer Power Output : 500 watts Input : ¼”, 0 dB Outputs : ¼” and Lockable Coaxial Speaker Connection Controls / Switches : Level with clip LED Power (On/Off) Voltage Selector : (115 / 230 V) Ground / Lift Output Impedances : (2, 4 or 8 ohms) Weight : 41,9 lb (19 kg) Dimensions (W/H/D) : 19" / 2RU / 15,6" (370 mm) Case not included in price. 32. One of my bands has a SumUp. There are nearly always deals available where if you get a reference from a current SumUp user you get the device at a discount (half price IIRC) and they get £10 added to their SumUp account. However with the right phone, the latest version doesn't even need the actual card reader as the transaction can be done phone-to-phone which is even more convenient for everyone. You don't need a business account, but if you want to keep the merch funds separate from your personal finances you can always set up one of the those Starling (or similar) accounts that are being advertised and don't actually cost you anything. IMO the tiny fees charged are nullified the first time you make a sale to someone who doesn't have cash on them, and these people are becoming more common with every gig. The other band I'm in haven't yet sorted themselves out with a card reader and consequently they have not been selling as much merch recently.

  33. Just GO FOR IT!! You'll be glad you did. When Mrs Scrumpy and I decided to re-start a S-W Bash back in 2017, little did we know that we were about to become local legends in our own lunch-time 🙂. That's largely down to the catering expertise of Mrs S of course, and the lesson is a valuable one: make sure you put on the best food and drink you possibly can! The rest will happen automatically. The great (and honestly unexpected) joy for us is that we've now got our own local 'Bash family' within the broader community of this wonderful Basschat forum. Here's some pic's from 2023:

  38. I love the idea of this tone but if i switch of the GAS filter and look at what i'm doing in my own bands its all 1970's covers either in the Glam or the punk bands. My Ampeg SVT7 thru my Mesa cabs does give me that old style tone but there are times i could do with that clearer mid to high tone cutting thru a bit. Dave

  42. In terms of prices the absolute top of the line Mesa bass head is now just under £1600. The M-Pulse lines were considerably more expensive than the current Mesa amps about 10-15 years ago. In terms of D-350 being expensive at £800, in about 2009 the 300 watt Walkabout was about £1300 for the head and about £1600 for the 1x15combo. The M3 Carbine 300 watt amps from a decade ago were also more expensive than the D-350. Essentially Mesa bass amps are more affordable than they used to be. Granted the designs are entirely different and class D amps are generally more cost effective to make (and ship) than the older amps. However I don’t really have an issue with the pricing mainly because this is not a new development. Mesa have always been more expensive to buy in the UK. This isn’t a new development or some master plan by Gibson. The products really are high quality though and are generally built to last. I bought a new Walkabout 1x15 combo in 2009 and it still works perfectly after hundreds of gigs and sessions.

  44. I have only played through a One10 once and although I liked the tone at normal volumes, when it was pushed, I found it ran out of headroom. I didn’t try it for long or in a band situation, but I felt it needed more. I can imagine that playing through two or a Two10 would be plenty loud and sound amazing. I was playing through a quilter bb800. I subsequently bought a Super compact, as I only wanted 1 speaker cab to carry about and for that to be light and easy to move. My friend has the super twin, which although sounds great, seemed less convenient to move about. I have found the Super Compact to be spot on. It is so loud that you won’t need two unless you are in a very loud band with no PA support. If you are happy to dial in your tone through amp eq rather than use native cab tone, a Super Compact might just do the trick if you want a very loud single speaker cab, although I would love another to sit on top, just for the hell of it! Until you use these things, you will never know really. Good luck!

Usual story with Matt starting off with good intentions following the set list only to get distracted and wander off playing songs either I or the guitarist didn’t know 😆 But we busked it and it seems no-one noticed or cared. Until the bar staff had to come and tell us to shut up at 11.30 because we should have stopped at 11…. Knackered 🤣 Edit for a pic:
