  1. Popped into Bassbros yesterday on the hunt for a nice 4 string Precision and this was just begging to come home with me. It appears to be a bit of a case queen with barely a mark on it anywhere and even the case is as new! It was a bit of a toss up between this and a Yamaha BBP34 but this won in the end. I have been playing mainly 5 strings for the last few years and the feeling of getting back on a 4 is just amazing! It has taken a really low setup and surprisingly the stock pickup is really nice. It might still get a Nordstrand or a Fralin at some point but let’s wait and see.

  2. Final one of my four gigs this week, played last night at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury. Opened in 2009, it is situated right on the riverside and holds around 640 people. One of the best theatres we visit, it has a great sound, superb backstage facilities and staff as well as being in a lovely town. We got there early after only driving up from Redditch, so had chance for a wander round. ( I had probably the best pizza ever at a place called Dough & Oil in the town centre, highly recommended! ) Gig went really well, one of our best for a while. Apparently Limehouse Lizzy were playing in the smaller adjoining theatre, so lots of people around. Long drive back home, got in around 2.30am so glad I’m not gigging tonight. My last two gigs with the band this coming week are in Ipswich and Birmingham, so hoping they’re as good.

  4. Great gig last night at the Service Station in Hull. The staff and crowd entered into the 70s Glam theme bigly. Bar staff dancing on the bar at the end…. Definitely will be returning in ‘25. The on stage sound was pants though, too loud and undefined (sounded great FOH though), could hardly tell what I was playing all night which led to the odd guff. Must sort out some in ears sooner rather than later.

  5. We had a pretty good one in Malvern last night supporting old skool punx The Samples. Decent sized crowd (room was almost full for us) and sound was pretty good - as the PA was vocals only and I had the biggest amp I could actually hear myself. I'd also put in simple tube compressor/noisegate combo in my Helix for a clean (for me!) bass sound. Gear was Parker bass through Helix into BBE pre and DBX rack compressor, Crown pwer amp and Markbass 4x10. Icing on the cake was that everybody hated us and nobody gave any compliments about anything we did until we left the stage and there was a collective shout of "Thank fck for that!" Anyway, here's a bit... (edited to add cleaned up audio and colours vid)

  6. Two nights depping done and great fun as ever. Phone call/ message 9 am Friday morning. 11 hours later load in for gig one. Got through relatively unscathed for a slightly later start and finish at a pub I’ve not played at for years. Last time I depped with them was January and it’s a mix of a set with only a few cross overs to my normal set (though different keys to those I usually play those few in) but good players and an easy bunch to work with and off. Second gig closer to home and a bit earlier to finish which is just as well as I’m in Mrs Walman’s bad books for taking two gigs just before we head off on holiday. Reasonable crowds both nights and running full IEM’s which worked well. A bit more holiday spending cash, which is nice. And so to bed and head to the airport tomorrow afternoon ready for Monday morning 😁

  7. I am selling this beautiful late 2006 Spector NS-4 with stunning looking solid quilted maple body wings, powerful active EMG pickups, the US Haz 18V preamp and gorgeous abalone crowns. I bought it in summer last year as my DOB (date of birth) bass. However, due to some higher than expected house renovation bills, I have to already sell it, which is a real shame. The bass is in showroom condition as the previous owner, who bought it from Sound Control in Glasgow, kept it in storage for all those years (he joined a band as their drummer instead). New, a US Spector NS-4 with the exact same specs costs $6,249.99 (according to a Spector bass configurator on a US retailer website). There are also two used NS-4s on Reverb for £4089 (no solid wings, only maple top) and £3699, so I think I am asking for a very fair price. During its short time with me, the bass has never left the house (very limited home use only). The bass is also not too heavy (for a bass with solid maple wings), weighing 9.5lb/4.3kg. I put EMG 35P4 and 35J pickups on the bass, but the original DCs will come with the bass of course. Finally, both the battery box as well as the cavity cover are recessed, which gives it a nice look. The bass is currently stored safely in its original case in a pet and smoke free house. Collection would be recommended but I can also ship it (UK only, sorry!) using a decent courier. Shipping would of course add some costs. 9. Completed a week of Me and My Girl at the Swan Theatre in Worcester for the ever excellent WODs. Properly old school show, which included the running time, full 3 hours with the interval and long sections of dialogue so concentration after the day job wasn’t always easy. This coupled with the fact the chart pretty looked the same for every song, every conceivable root fifth octave it felt like in every key. Love playing with the band though, great players and camaraderie, will be back for the youth show in August which is Addams Family. Obligatory gear shot- G&L LB100 with chrome flats and nordymute, little mark tube and db 110 cab, one trip to the car!

  10. Ashdown BTA400 Bass Amp. Here for sale is my flight cased Ashdown BTA400 hybrid bass head with Roqsolid soft cover and FS-4 foot switch. This is an incredible amplifier with huge headroom. I haven’t gigged for years and rarely playing bass these days sadly so feel it’s time to move it on albeit reluctantly. I am the second owner as I understand and the amp has had very little use by me. I’ve used it in rehearsal half a dozen times. Not even stretched its legs! Selectable 4Ohm/8Ohm for choice of cabinets. One of the leather straps could possibly do with replacing before long but is perfectly serviceable. I’d be reluctant to courier etc. due to weight and would rather a buyer came to see it. I’d need to let the neighbours know before firing it up however! I am regularly in Milton Keynes and Lincoln if that helps any potential buyers too. No trades though thanks, just for sale this one. 🤩 Thanks for looking. Stu.

  11. Our monthly outing at Jam Night. The guitarist (Warren) was depping for us. I didn’t think we were as tight as we are with our regular guitarist - the singer (Vicky) was on a high after the set though. She even managed to give me a “singer’s stare” towards the end of the instrumental. A bit of Dusty for you. Alternatively a Sam Fox cover (I managed to get a “usually uncovered” gag in for that one 😀).

  12. Fred keeps asking if the bass can be his when I'm dead, seems like he's hoping I'll snuff it soon! I said it'll be sold on the open market and if he wants to put a bid in, that's fine.

  13. I missed out on RSD yesterday as the nearest record shop is a couple of cities away from me. It doesn’t really happen down here. Ever since I moved out to the sticks 4 years ago I haven’t passed an actual record shop anywhere near me. It’s a fair trek to even get food or medicines, never mind records. But this morning I went to a local vidé grenier (basically yer French car boot sale) and picked up “Melting Pot” by Booker T & The MG’s, the 3rd Velvet Underground album, and a cracking two-sider 7” from when the Bee Gees still had a bit of psychedelia in them. Also got some cassettes for my Tascam 4-track recorder, a Tour De France promotional cup that I’ll turn into a shaker, and a toy piano. Total cost? 8 euros 💥 (and no queues 👍) Scorchiooooo!!!

  15. For sale: Pair of Bergantino 1x12 bass cabinets Selling as a pair only. £400 for the pair Collection only. I'm based near Basildon, Essex. See below for specifications. The HT112ER has a tweeter with adjustable volume dial at the back. The EX112XR is the same cab but without the tweeter. Both have been gigged occasionally over several years (6-8 gigs a year) in jazz and fusion groups with upright and electric bass. They've never been pushed hard and I would say they sound as great as the day I bought them. There is some cosmetic wear on some parts of the carpet-like material and on the corner feet but otherwise in good condition. Owned since new, I bought them from Bass Direct in Warwick. They each come with official Bergantino padded covers. I think these were amongst the clearest sounding cabs on the market at the time, with a price to boot. To get the equivalent Bergantino speakers now would cost between £1000-1200 per cab (from a quick check on the Bass Direct site). Feel free to ask any questions, I'll answer as best I can Specifications HT112ER •1 x 12" cast frame woofer w/ 80oz. magnet, vented pole piece •high intelligibility 1" tweeter •power handling - 350 watts rms •custom phase - coherent crossover with tweeter level control •frequency response: 40hz - 18khz •sensitivity: 98.5db • anechoic: 2.83v/1m •2 x 1/4" and 2 x neutrik connectors •impedance: 8 ohms •dimensions: 15 3/4"H x 18-1/2"W x 15"D •40cm x 47cm x 38cm •weight: 39lbs/17.7Kgs •This cab works well with high power amplifiers from 300 - 500w at 8Ω EX112XR: •1 x 12" cast frame woofer w/ 80oz. magnet, vented pole piece •power handling - 350 watts rms •sensitivity: 98.5db • anechoic: 2.83v/1m •frequency response: 40hz - 4khz •2 x 1/4" and 2 x neutrik connectors •impedance: 8 ohms •dimensions: 15 3/4"H x 18-1/2"W x 15"D •40cm x 47cm x 38cm •weight: 36lbs/16.3Kgs •This cab works well with high power amplifiers from 300 - 500w at 8Ω

  17. Remember my post on April fools day about making a guitar out of wood ash? A few people fell for it I suspect because it sounds vaguely plausible. I even started to think that there might be something in it myself. So to prove it one way or another I'm giving it a try on a small scale. I'm using ash from the fire pit that we used last night. After removing any large lumps or unburnt bits I added wood glue and water. Stir and leave to settle, not sure how long it will take to dry..... I'll get back to you.

  18. Where do you stand in a five piece band ? Why does everything on Basschat inevitably have to turn into another bloody argument, just relax, it's just a discussion forum, not really of any import in the grand scheme of things. Yeah yeah yeah ! Sorry, some of it doesn't scan very well.

  19. Owen has a problem with his neck! Or more correctly, Owen has a problem with one of his necks. Or to be utterly precise, Owen has a problem with a G&L 5-er neck that has a snapped off truss-rod end. Getting fretboards off in one piece always carried a risk - but I haven't lost one recently and so it is worth stacking up the odds a little further and giving it a go. It's a very nice neck - but those edges are mighty thin, with the fret slots almost fully through to the maple: And so there is the possibility of ending up with 22 rectangles of fretboard rather than one whole one. BUT, it's a case of taking that risk or scrapping it. Most fretboards (but not all) are glued with heat-softening wood glues - and so you basically heat the fretboard up with an iron or similar (I use a travel-iron) and then ease a blade, and eventually a thin steel sheet slowly, slowly, slowly along until it's off: And it's still in one piece! You can see that the truss rod was fully tensioned when the adjuster-end snapped off. Interesting, though, that only one half of the strip is bowed. Sort of defies physics - I've never seen that before but maybe this is why it wasn't doing the business: Should be a pretty straightforward replacement as long as I can get a rod that fits properly.

  20. Reduced to £1650 This one hurts but it has to be done… I’m selling my Rickenbacker 4003s in walnut. Immaculate condition with Ric hard case and all the bits and pieces. Bought new by me from Hot Rox in Nottingham in early 2019. Available for collection from Nottingham or local delivery/meet within an hour or so from Nottingham. This is part of a major clearout so no trades I’m afraid. Scammers abound, sadly, so I’d prefer not to ship and would rather meet to hand over in person. Please PM to discuss options - if I do agree to ship it’s at the buyer’s expense, UK only and only to established BC members with positive feedback. I’m lucky enough to have two Ricks - this and a 2010 4003 - and this is by far the nicer bass to play! No sticky neck, the finish is flawless, the body edges are comfortable and it’s a nice light weight. It also has my (not) patented thumb rest (which can be removed and the original pick guard screws put back). So why am I selling this one and not the 4003? Sentimental reasons - the 4003 was bought for me by my dear wife and I’ll be buried with it! Thanks for looking please PM with any questions.

  21. FINAL PRICE DROP: **NOW £1,000** - For 1 WEEK ONLY If it’s not sold by the end of Sunday 28th April I’ll take it down and keep it - this is an absolutely amazing price for this bass, however it’s a buyers market at the moment, but I’ll absolutely take it down at the end of next week if it isn’t sold Poss Trade or PX (either way - see below for trade options ) I have this absolutely lovely 2018 Sadowsky RV4E MetroExpress (the JAPANESE version) 4 string Jazz Bass in ‘59 Burst, weighing in at under 8.5lbs As most people reading will know, the short lived Japanese MetroExpress basses were made to the same spec as the 🇯🇵 Metroline basses but with less options (See: https://sadowsky.com/discontinued-instruments/japanese-metroexpress-basses/ for more info). This bass is every inch a Sadowsky, it looks, feels and sounds as fantastic as you’d expect. It’s really light, comes with the VTC preamp and it is in excellent condition. It’s not perfect - but it’s not far off, there is however a tiny chip out of the finish at the back of the bass by the electronics cavity, but it isn’t noticeable at all really, and not something that should concern anyone but it’d be wrong not to mention it - it’s got zero buckle rash or anything like that, and apart from the minute chip on the back it’s as good as new. There also a bit of discolouration under the pots, nothing major at all but it would be remiss of me not to mention it. I’ve literally just put a brand new set of Fender 7025’s on as well, so it’s ready to roll! This was my “dream bass” for a long time, but when II finally got it I realised I just do not get to play my 4 strings anymore, whenever I gig it is with a 5, and I can’t afford and don’t want to have my best & by some margin most expensive bass the one in my collection I play the least! I have priced this very cheap (for what it is) to sell. Bassbros have one exactly the same but black for £1599 and there’s one on eBay for about that price too, so I think I’ve put it up for a realistic selling price - I am always up for a deal, so give me a shout with what you have and see what we can sort Trades/PX: Definitely interested in potential trades & PX: 5 string Jazz or PJ (Similar standard - Xotic/Sei/Lakland/Fender etc) for a straight swap (or maybe with cash your way for the right thing), but also I’ll take PX with a cheaper bass plus cash I’m actively looking for a nice Lakland 55-01 at the mo (but I’d maybe take a 55-02, 55-60 or DJ5 as PX as well) or a Cort Elrick NJS5 I’d love a Yamaha BBP35, but would look at a BB735a or a TRB1005J. Happy to look at good cheaper basses - MIM Fender, 5 String RSD Ch-adowsky (PJ especially), Charvel San Dimas V, G&L Tribute L2500 - try me and see what can be worked out) I’m happy to do PX plus cash my way - drop me a message and the worst I can say is No thanks Also quite fancy a Jad Freer Capo and I’m after a HX Stomp again, so either/both of these would be acceptable as makeweights in a trade. I think I’m definitely making it fairly easy to do a deal and for someone to get their hands on an absolutely stone mint 🇯🇵 Sadowsky Jazz Bass! Shipping can be arranged if necessary but we can discuss it via PM

  22. For me Playing with a group who I've played with a lot and we have fun together An audience who are into what we play (Dancing/Joining in the songs) Adaquate stage area - double if they have a good sound system Good sound tech and time to sound check Easy load in/out My all time favorite gig was when my old band played the main stage at the Brighton Dome, it ticked all these boxes (and then some) ... I still get tingles whn I think about it! What makes for a great gig for you? Sam x

  29. Massive admiration for any fellow BC’ers that do pit work. That’s some proper skill. The show I’ve been op’ing lights for this week had a lad on bass who used to play with my lad in the school soul/concert band. He was awesome. Like: 21, still at uni, but as good as any bottom end I’ve heard in a west ender. And in my household, that’s a lot of west end shows seen! Good work @scalpy!

  30. We own our own sound and lights which includes two haze machines. One for each side of the stage. It looks great, however most of our big stage gigs provide professional sound and lights. For smaller gigs our lighting and sound would be overkill. The pic is from a " tent gig". One of the few gigs where we used our full arsenal of sound & lights. Daryl

  31. Second two of 4 gigs this week for me. Thursday was at my local pub with the acoustic duo. Got there at 7pm to find it full, mainly diners. Plenty of requests, including ‘Man who sold the world’ and ‘Starman’ - they still like Bowie round here! Free drinks for us, so as I walked to the gig I availed myself of a couple of pints, unusual for me. Home before midnight, and another gig arranged there later in the year. Last night I was at Redditch Palace Theatre with The ELO Experience. A small Grade 2 listed theatre with a modern facade but original(ish) auditorium, first opened in 1913. Capacity of 420 so a sell out gig. Great appreciative crowd as always here, most people up on their feet for the second set. Since I sold my GK 1001RB amp last week, I used my GK800RB head and it sounded fine into my GKNeo410. Small very raked stage meant not much room but we managed ok. On to Shrewsbury today for a gig at The Severn Theatre tonight.

  32. When you start a thread with "not feeling it" with IEM's then all those people who don't like them will jump in, and that's what happened. A lot of the comments here I would attribute to poorly fitting IEM's or ones where the sound in their ears hasn't been sorted properly. @Al Krow asked if there is a 'halfway house' the answer is no, if your in ears fit properly they should cut the outside sound to almost inaudible. The whole point is to cut out all the distorted unbalanced sound mess you get on stage and only hear a studio quality mix in you ears. If you can't get isolation or a good mix you aren't doing it properly and you won't like it. People can and do use in-ears half in and half out so they can hear the on-stage sound but that just increases the sound level and the in-ear sound from the buds is nasty and tinny because they aren't sealed. We've even had people who only put them in one ear. Honestly can you remember seeing a major touring band who don't use in-ears. Do you think every single band are just going through the motions or are 'just not feeling it' when they are closing the main stage at Glastonbury (other large events are available) All the excitement coming from the crowd is still there, all the excitement of playing your music and seeing the response still happens, you are still doing the thing that makes all those people have a great time. I'm not pretending there are no down sides to in ears, it takes time to get used to them. Longer for some than others. It takes as much effort to set up properly as any new skill, you have to put in the miles. If you go wired then you are tethered. It starts feeling very different and 'wrong' but ends up being a new normal. On the plus side you won't lose your hearing, your band will sound better, you will play better, your audiences will have a better time. I don't want to invalidate anyone's personal experience, we all like loud sounds, plugging our first bass amp in and turning it up to maximum is a great experience and it is exciting and adrenaline pumping but going out night after night without hearing protection is going to damage your hearing, limit your experience of music and in the end give you a sense of isolation from friends and family and ultimately life as you hearing fades and the tinnitus rises. Choose wisely.

  33. Played at The Pit at McCann's Rock and Ale bar in Newport last night. Really good fun. Good setup with cabs and drum kit provided, so you just need to rock up with heads and breakables. We hit everything a bit too fast, which we haven't done previously. Need to work out a signal to slow it down a bit. I dropped my pick twice as well, which doesn't usually happen, so that was annoying. Still, good fun and people seemed to enjoy it! We played with a death metal band called Cremulation and a another doom band, Damek, who we're hoping we can arrange for them to come to Bristol at some point. This was the setup. We're Hora, and the gear I used was my Dingwall into my GX-100 and then my ABM-600.

  34. A bit late, but my new blues band played our first couple of gigs a week or so ago (Tapestry in Bradford on the Thursday & Venue 23 in Wakefield last Sunday), supporting Mick McConnell's (guitarist from Smokie) new blues rock band at both gigs. It all went really well for our first gigs and went down very well. It looks like it's going to be a good band with some top players. Just need to get some more gigs booked now...

  36. With great regret, I’m selling my stock Ibanez SR500 - I call it ‘the woodchipper’ - for obvious reasons! It plays great and sounds fab, which is why it’s so worn. For a good few years it was my gigging number one, and used for all sorts of jams, open mics etc, which has left it looking very well played!! Don’t be fooled by the looks though, it’s been meticulously maintained and cared for, the neck is great and is well set up. It’s wearing a set of elixirs at the minute. There’s one dead fret up the very top of dusty end somewhere if I recall, but only with my silly low action! you can hear a somewhat muffled video of it here, back before I’d chipped quite so much of the finish off!! I’m asking £175 collected from Cheltenham sadly I cannot post. not bad considering the retail price!

  37. Dingwall NG2.....you know what this does. The Dingwall growl is perfect for modern rock and metal playing, as designed and backed by Nolly Getgood of Periphery. This is an amazing sounding and playing instrument in a great colour. There are a few very small indents, mainly on the back. Hi-res pics are uploaded for you to zoom in and look if you want. Currently tuned to Drop G. Happy to post via Parcelforce (although not insured at the listed posted cost) If you want to arrange your own insurance and postage or if you want to collect in person that's fine too. Selling only because there's something I want on this forum that's for sale already.

  45. Primary importance is good audience response. It helps to have an easy load-in and hospitable staff, as it gets you in a good frame of mind, as does everybody turning up on time. A decent amount of space also helps. Being able to get a good sound.

  46. If you consider any external thing that has a positive effect on audience is low lights. People seem to be braver coming to the floor when the levels are low. If there are some coloured light effects, even better. (I also love, when the bar isn't too far away, because if people hear and see the band well from the bar, audience may become wild from the start.)

  48. In a way it's great having all these tonal options on the instrument but in a another way it's a liability because there are more possibilities for things to go wrong. I once played the first few songs of a gig with the tone control wound nearly all the way off as it had been knocked when putting the bass in its gig bag after sound checking. The E and A strings sounded fine but I was wondering why the higher notes weren't cutting through as they had an hour ago. When I discovered what had happened I was mentally kicking myself. And this was on a bass that only has three controls - volume, tone and series parallel for the pickup. I find having all these options useful for working out what I like, but invariably there will be one setting that sounds (to me) much better than all the others, and once I have found it I'll probably never touch the controls again. I'd have my favourite setting hard wired into the bass and no controls at all.
