We played McCathy's Sports Bar in Bletchley on Saturday. I believe live music is a relatively new thing there and the guy who runs it is trying to build things up. Very quiet to start with but got busier for our 2nd set.11 points

While there might not be any photos of last night's gig some excellent live videos of Saturday have appeared. Here's a minute or so of "Revelator" Hurtsfall-Revelator.mp410 points

Hurtsfall were supporting US band Spotlights at The Bodega in Nottingham on Monday. It's been quite a while since I last did a Monday night gig, and now I remember why. Despite not having to go on ridiculously early there were still only about 30 people there when we went on. However apart from two, none of them had seen us play before and quite a few people of them came up afterwards to say how much they had enjoyed us, despite the fact that musically we don't have a lot in common with the headlining band. We even sold some T-shirts and CDs which was definitely a bonus. It's a small stage at The Bodega and it doesn't get any bigger after the main band have filled it up with their drum kit and backline, so we had to be creative with the set-up and limited on-stage movements. However for a change we had plenty of time to soundcheck as Spotlights had already finished theirs when we arrived at 5.45, so it was an unexpected pleasure to be able to take our time and get a good balance both on-stage and FoH. Spotlights were interesting. Musically it's not really the sort of thing I'm into but the performance was great and their bassist produced a couple of notes that made whole venue vibrate, something I've never experienced before and which got the PA engineer frantically trying to locate the rogue frequency, after which sound wasn't quite as dense but at least there was no danger of structural damage! 10.00pm live music curfew meant I was back home before 11.00 which makes a change. There probably won't be any photos of this one, but if any do emerge on Facebook I'll post them up later.10 points

For sale is my really nice G&L Tribute L2500 - 5 String/Tobacco Sunburst The usual unique & extremely versatile L-Series preamp (treble roll off/bass roll off/treble boost/series-parallel switch/active-passive switch) and G&L MFD pickups which sound incredible - I’m sure if you’re looking at this advert you don’t need me to explain the features and virtues of the L2500 basses! This was in 9-9.5/10 condition until a week or two ago and it got knocked off it’s stand in a boisterous pub gig and so there’s a tiny chip out the finish by the front pickup and a couple of little marks where it’s taken the tumble - it’s really not much but I wouldn’t sell it without being upfront about it (and it’s reflected in the price!) Everything else about the bass is exceptional - it is setup superbly and plays really nicely, and the three distinct sounds you can get from this bass are really amazing Im selling a few things as I’m condensing down my gear but trade-wise I might take: (5 String Only) Sadowsky MetroExpress (PJ5 but maybe a JJ5), Jad Freer Capo (can add cash), Yamaha PJ5 (again, can add cash if needed if it’s a BB735/BB1025 etc), but my preference is a cash sale - also I need a decent (powerful but small ideally) 4 Ohm cab 600-800w(or more) a 210 or 212 would be perfect Shipping can be arranged - U.K. is about £25, and I’ll include a padded gig bag and obviously box it up etc *Reduced to £325*8 points

I'd like to share some pictures of my new custom built Rikkers Powerline. It has a red alder body with a black walnut top, maple neck with a ziricote fretboard, ceramic humbuckers, ABM bridge, Hipshot tuners and a Noll preamp. I couldn't be happier!8 points

Who hasn't drooled over the bass tone, and Herbie Flowers' gorgeous playing, in Walk on the Wild Side. I had a spare afternoon, so set about doing a cover, testing various mics to see how close I could get to matching the tone. Crazy thing is I now can't remember which mic I used in te end, but probably a combo of Golden Age Project ribbon mic a foot from the bridge at a slight angle, and a little AKG condenser up near the fingerboard. Recorded and mixed in Ableton Live. Basses, guitars and saturated-vocals by me (sorry for the vocal...), 'Brushify' midi drum kit played on keyboard. Midi sax is always a bit lame but it'll do for the run out here. I was pretty pleased. Enjoy, or flame me, as you wish!7 points

On Saturday night I was out with the covers band, Top Deck, at The Holly Bush, Marehay, Derbyshire. It was only our second gig with Elliott (on Flying-V) as our second guitarist . He’s the third we’ve had in two years. The previous one had to retire through ill-health, the one before that we sacked because of his persistent drink-driving. Fingers crossed we can keep Elliott for a while. It all went well although we were nearly upstaged by the bar manager parading her pet chicken (not sexy slang). I used a Mustang PJ through a Markbass LMIII and Barefaced Midget T.6 points

New amp arrived EICH T900 head and I quickly put it through its paces with my Ampeg SVT112AV cab ( Note I have a new LFsys Monaco arriving today which I will also review soon ) The T900 is a small light 900w bass head and I decided to purchase the Black Edition. First few minutes of testing I was starting to think it’s not for me and sounded too dark .. but soon I discovered the control called “ Taste” and this is where the magic happens ! You can go from clear, open and brighter sounding using the control turned anti clockwise or warm, darker, vintage sounding turning it clockwise to the “ rich” setting The EQ points work very well and the amp fans are super quiet Very nice build quality and the only thing I did was stick four larger rubber feet under it to raise it up to clear top mounted cab handles and better cab grip so it doesn’t slip off as it’s so light !! First impressions are it’s a lovely amp and will be put through its paces with the Monaco soon5 points

**** NOW SOLD **** For sale is my beautiful 2013 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray SR4 3EQ Fretless with Pau Ferro fretboard. These basses need no introduction and are getting harder to find. Apart from one tiny knock as seen in the picture, the bass is in mint condition with no marks or grooves on the fretboard or buckle rash on the back. Just recently set up by The Bass Gallery, it is strung with a set of Rotosound Swing 66 Nickel rounds which is my favourite strings for all of my fretless basses. Plays and sounds amazing as expected and comes complete with the original hard case. I am based in Camberley in Surrey and any trial welcome. As for trades, I would be happy with one of the following, Fender American Vintage II 1954 Precision - Sunburst or Blonde Fender American Vintage II 1966 Jazz - Sunburst or White Fender American Vintage II 1960 Precision - Sunburst Fender Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Thank you for looking.5 points

Custom built jazz bass consisting of a Squire Classic Vibe Jazz neck. This is from the Chinese made series of vibes from 2010 and is stunning. The body is alder and finished in nitro with a tasteful light roadworn /relic. It has Norstrand 51 split J Alnico pickups which are vintage wax potted if you like that kind of thing! Please check the You Tube video on these pickups. They take the bass to another level. Comes with a basic gig bag. Can post if you arrange courier.UK only. I have reduced the price as I have something else in mind and would like this gone. Failing that I may part out the body and pickups.5 points

Gorgeous looking Jazz bass which I’m only moving on as I’m playing a lot less these days so don’t need so many basses. I’ve had this bass since new - bought direct from Adrian. In excellent condition - only light surface scratches. Lovely playable neck which is more a C profile even though on a Jazz body. Delano pickups & 2 band preamp. Comes with the more robust Maruszczyk branded GBBS nylon gigbag, & a Maruszczyk leather strap. Has Schaller straplocks fitted. Plays supremely well & sounds sweet as you like. No postage. Collection or will meet up to an hour away from Swindon (which actually is quite a decent amount of distance away!)4 points

The Glam Band I put together recently just had it's second rehearsal. We've now added 17 songs to the set which is pretty good going. I have worked with the drummer in other projects and know how good he is but seeing him at work in rehearsal - wow! This guy is quite incredible. Makes it a joy to be in any band if the drummer is A) a nice person and B) an amazing musician4 points

Bear in mind I have no clue whether we asked the appropriate amount or whether it should have been double - as others have said there's no way to know. We asked for 800 for one 75 minute set.4 points

Just received these and requested to return them - a request that was immediately agreed without question. They're neither tapered nor solid maple (they're some sort of ply). They're all over Ebay.3 points

Once the facets were done I then used a spokeshave, and sanding blocks to get the length of the neck more or less to its final shape. Today I started on the transition. I find it easier that way, taking the transition down to the neck, rather than doing the transition first. I can see the curves better for some reason. Here's the development of the headstock transition. I also made a quick start on the heel transition. Here it is unstarted..... One of the last jobs to do on the neck is drilling the holes for the tuners. (I'm pretty pleased with the walnut veneer on the back of the headstock 😁)3 points

Well, we got the gig. It's not too far to travel and I managed to double the quote the band were initially discussing going in with. Thank goodness I wore them down. We'd have looked like total amateurs asking for peanuts. My only regret is we didn't go in higher, they virtually took our hands off .3 points

This one? She's on my lap as I'm typing, but is scared of bass maintenance so was NOWHERE NEAR! (She's not scared of basses, unless they're lain flat / being worked on?!) Nor were the other two! (Chocolate is the 'dog voted most likely to eat strings' out of the lot of them tbf).3 points

This was a unicorn bass for me, had a go on one when I was 16, fell in love and it took me more than 30 years to track one down! Having lived with it for a few years I've decided to move it on as it's just a little too big and heavy for me. All original as far as I'm aware and great condition for the age - a few scuffs here and there which I've highlighted in the pics, but no major dings and importantly the neck and fingerboard are basically unmarked. I had some work done on it to get it in excellent playing condition. Upper half of the fingerboard was re-profiled and refretted by Matt at Kersey Guitars, and the original pre-amp was serviced by Martin at the Gallery. Weight is 4.9 kg. It doesn't have a case but I have an old flight case I can ship it in if required. Sofa not included but you can sit on it when you come to try the Jaydee 😀2 points

Very sad to be selling this bass as it looks great, sounds great and is a ton of fun to play, but the old-skool covers band that I bought it for has fizzled out, and it's not getting much use any more. As you'll probably be aware, these basses have garnered a lot of praise for their looks, weight, sound and playability, and I am happy to confirm that the hype is fully justified in all respects. First of all, and I probably don't need to say this, but it really does look killer - the metallic green finish is obviously drop-dead gorgeous, the huge chrome pickups and hardware are all suitably vintage-looking, and even the Indian laurel fingerboard looks lovely - dark and chocolately, and nothing like the nasty dry cow poo colour that you so often get with Indian laurel boards. As for weight, I can confirm that this bass somehow manages the magic trick of being both extremely lightweight and yet at the same time perfectly well balanced. I have zero tolerance for even the slightest hint of neck dive in any bass, and am happy to report that this instrument balances perfectly on the strap even though it weighs in at an insanely light 3.278kg. Yes, less than 3.3 kilos. You might think that such a lightweight bass probably has a lightweight sound as well, but no, think again. Those big chrome pickup covers are not just there for show - this bass sounds HUGE. The neck pickup is a real floor-shaker, and the bridge pickup has a 60s Jazz on steroids thing going on. Obvs you are not going to get MTD-like high frequencies from this bass, but it covers far more ground than you might think, and sounds fabulously thumpy with the GHS Precision Flats it is currently wearing. It zings plenty more with rounds, too. The only thing that I disliked about this was the tuners. The previous owner warned me they were crap, and indeed they were, so I replaced them with a set of Gotoh Res-O-Lites (the GB350 set), which cost £80 but are a joy to use and have contributed to this particular bass being even more crazy lightweight than it was when I bought it. I'll throw in the original tuners just in case you want them, but trust me, you won't. Presented in immaculate condition apart from two very minor scratches on the back of the body and a really tiny headstock ding - see pics. Full specs on the Epiphone website here: https://www.epiphone.com/en-GB/p/Electric-Bass/EPIM96326/Wanderlust-Metallic-Green Collection in person from Birmingham B30 welcome, or I am happy to drive and meet halfway within a one-hour-ish radius. I can also post (England, Scotland and Wales only, alas, thanks to Brexit!) for an extra £25 insured. My feedback thread: Thanks for looking!2 points

BC price £625 I am about to move house and have had to make some tough decisions on my music gear to raise funds. None tougher than this. I love this bass, I don't think they will ever make them for lefties again. It took me months to source the proper hard case and that wasn't cheap. Here it is, up for sale. My lefty Epiphone Jack Casady. With Maruszczyk flats. It sounds incredible, I've only giggled it a few times unfortunately, but the condition is superb. Feel free to make a sensible offer. I also have a leather/ suede strap for it too, also listed for sale. I really, really don't want to sell it. But apparently things like a fridge and a washing machine are more important? Collection preferred. Courier at cost is possible.2 points

Pics and details of the custom here: https://flatericbassandguitar.blogspot.com/2010/10/doug-wilkes-guitar-builder.html As I said, lucky enough to meet him and now recall something from the visit that I forgot to put in the post. When Doug decided to tweak the rod (I thought it was fine but was better when he had laid his hands on it) it obviously would have altered the pitch. Having tweaked the rod, he down tuned all the strings and brought them up again, all by ear and no tuner. Finished my coffee, shook him by the hand and headed home. After all the years of playing around with stringed instruments, he must have perfect pitch. At home, checked it - bang on correct. Most impressed. 👍 I can't find any pics of the fretless. It was a model of Doug's range when he was making production instruments in Hanley. Looks a similar shape to the OP but with two Jazz pick-ups. Must dig it out. 👍 Cheers. 😊2 points

Lads... I lived in San Francisco in the 90s. It's where i really started playing seriously and collecting. When i moved to london in 2003, i couldn't bring all my basses with me. I sold a bunch, but this fella was one of my first so i left it with a buddy to hold. Well 20+ years later that fella visited me here in Dublin and I asked him if he'd be willing to send this over Im more interested in the bridge than the bass itself. I think it will be perfect for. A project im doing. I bought this at Guitar Centre on the Sunset Strip in LA in the early 90s. Subsequently i got my first fender and put a kahler whammy bridge on this one So please to see it again! Needs a cleaning/oiling and new strings but it does seem to be making bass noises. Possible issue with the High eq pot. Back in the fold...2 points

As above i use 2 QSC K10s and single RCF 12 sub. Its always enough for pubs and clubs. We still use backline for bass and drums. The separation is the key for me. The K10s working from 80 Htz upwards takes a load of dynamic energy (probably wrong term) away and they sound ‘attractive’ to my ear. Loud, but not taxing. All the usual space restrictions and apply, so the sub is under one of the K10s. I set the mix, it doesn’t honestly change much from gig to gig and the set the Sub attenuator to suit the room. it works for me. In the same way I adjust the sub 150hz levels on my bass guitar amp, to suit the room. It works for me.2 points

This is finally out after recording it last year. The video editing is slightly circumspect but I’m pretty pleased with how it sounds. There was some pressure as the engineer is one of the house guys at AIR and the bassist they used previously was John Giblin (RIP) Gear used was a G&L LB100 with chrome flats, Markbass vintage pre, Markbass lmt500 head and Aguilar db112 cabs.2 points

Very glad it's not just me that does that! Same here - I'm in charge of printing set lists for everyone, and I do one for them and a separate one for myself with messages about all the stuff I might have forgotten, like "Tone full up", "retune to E", "You play the intro on this one" etc etc. It's not foolproof, though! It seems you're among friends here!2 points

We played in Beverley yesterday at the wonderful Sun Inn, which is now a monthly gig for our acoustic duo ‘Milestone’. Arrived at 4.30 pm to set up, and it was already busy. The gig runs from 5.30 till 8pm, with us doing 3x40 minute sets of 100% audience requested songs. We had the most ever number of requests, and managed to play most of them, although we were pleased the lady who’d asked for Britney’s ‘Hit me baby one more time’ had to leave before we attempted it. Other songs requested included Springsteen’s ‘I’m on fire’, ‘Broken stones’ and James Taylor’s version of ‘How sweet it is’ which doubled as a request for some JT and Motown. This is one of those special gigs where everything is just spot on - a great audience, brilliant staff etc, and fantastic landlords Paul and Del who really care about music. ( Del even said we should get there a bit earlier next time and he’ll serve us one of his legendary Sunday lunches, or Yorkshire Tapas!) Looking forward to our July gig.2 points

Hurtsfall opened the second day of the BlaqkhOlesun Festival at the Alhabra in Morecambe on Saturday. Nice big venue with a massive backstage area complete with a maze of Spinal Tap-esque passageways leading between the dressing rooms and the stage. Luckily we managed to avoid the Hairy Bikers procession on the way there and arrived with plenty of time to soundcheck. Method Cell who are also from Nottingham set off slightly later than us, got caught up in it all and arrived just minutes before the doors opened. Great PA and foldback system so there was no problem going straight from my Helix into the PA and we had an excellent on-stage sound (and according to everyone we spoke to sounded great FoH too). In fact not a single band used any backline, and it was definitely noticeable in terms of getting good balanced FoH mixes for all the bands. Also used my Nux Wireless system for the first time at a gig and it seemed to perform flawlessly. Only downside with playing first is that we were on-stage at 4.20 when the venue wasn't as full then as it was later in the day. However most of those who had managed to get there early were down the front dancing and several people mentioned to us afterwards that they were glad they had made the effort to be there from the beginning and had caught our set because they really liked us. The new intro music worked well although we were on stage too soon IMO. More practice needed there. There were people singing along with the songs. The current set has both our slow numbers in it which is something that always worries me as it has the potential to ruin the flow, but both were especially well received. Sold a decent amount of merch and made a lot of new fans. I have to say that I enjoyed the whole afternoon/evening, with all the bands being excellent, something that rarely happens at these sorts of gigs. Discovered two new to me bands that I'll want to see again, and Novus who I'd seen before and wasn't that impressed with, have undergone a line up change and presented a new and (IMO) improved more electronic sound. Auger, who headlined were as usual absolutely brilliant. Completely shattered at the end of the day so it was a good thing that we;'d booked a Hotel to stay over and took a leisurely drive back on the Sunday. And we're doing it all again tonight, only this time it's a local gig at The Bodega in Nottingham supporting US band Spotlights. Obligatory band photos:2 points

Played on Friday night. It was ok... We were the opening act for 4 bands at the Red Lion in Bristol. We were told to arrive at 5, but said we couldn't get there till 6 for work reasons. Just as well really. Nothing was set up, and the two bands between us and the headliners didn't arrive till 6:30, with our stage time of 7:15, so they got line checked and we had a bit of a sound check. The available backline for me was a Fender Rumble 100, old style one with what I think was a 12" speaker. Not enough to do anything against the 4x12 one of our guitarists was going through really, so my stage volume was nonexistent. I also rely on my amp's valve drive, so I took the line out from my ABM-600 and put it into the return of the Rumble. I was also a bit squashed at the side. Not quite enough room to manoeuvre, so I was side on for almost all of our set. And we played to all of about 7 people, who did seem to enjoy it, so not terrible. Plus the sound man insisted on an encore. Didn't manage to watch the other bands, they didn't come watch us and the beer garden was nice, so we had a chat. The promoter really likes us and wants to get us on a more fitting bill. Got £50 too, which is better than we were expecting!2 points
