Another gig at a bluegrass festival last night. Only 4 of us (bass, banjo, mandolin and guitar) and we met for our usual one hour rehearsal just before our set and then had a lot of fun on stage with only a few minor issues. We have played this festival before and the sound was great, even better than usual with the perfect mix coming through the monitors. I had a bass solo in one song, quite rare in bluegrass, and nailed it and came home feeling very good about the evening. No photos this time but it was a lovely warm evening, perfect weather for an outdoor show and we will be back in early August for another festival. I'm mainly a jazz guy but these bluegrass gigs really keep me on my toes and playing with very good musicians is always a bonus and of course learning new songs is good for me musically and mentally. 😊11 points

Thought I’d post the latest acquisition as not everyone peruses the short scale thread. This is a soft aged Lionel in gold that supplements my white aged version. I’d originally ordered a shell pink active one that was awesome but it unfortunately had a cosmetic defect and had to be returned, the gold one was taken in exchange. The shorties collection has now been reduced to these 2 and they are a good fit, sound, weight and playability wise for the current gig activities. Done spending now (hopefully)….7 points

Chris means well. Every time you engage with Jon and post it, you perpetuate this. In the end, we all know nothing will happen and you’ll become more and more exasperated with him. Chris’s way is the fastest way to heal. I appreciate you’ve lost money and that’s awful but you need to weigh this against the emotional impact of continuing with this. You’re not helping the bass community by harming yourself.5 points

I felt I needed another good, great five string Jazz. I have a Lakland USA JO that I absolutely adore, and a befriended bass player has a 5 string USA JO that is also brilliant, so 1 and 1 makes 2: I needed a JO5. Found one from 2003 in Poland, had it shipped to Amsterdam, and it arrived within two days (which is really really fast in my book). The case was clearly used, but the bass is in pretty good nick. Has some bucklewear, but the frets are okay, the neck is nicely worn in and the overall feel is fantastic, as you'd expect from a bass from that price range. Haven't plugged it in yet because it arrived pretty late last night, but I already love this bass. Extra plus: it's pretty light.5 points

The breakup sound on this new Ebs black haze 2 is incredible, my new favourite drive. Used it at practice and it sounds superb in the mix. Kind of reminds me of the Ashdown hyperdrive when dialed in ...but way more beef (not as thin as the HD) it does something great to the mids .highly recommend 👌5 points

I've got to agree with @binky_bass - if you want a custom bass at a reasonable price then Alan has got to be your man. Build quality is exceptional and he will give you regular updates. Further to the comment about new builders with no form - I have to disagree - our own @Andyjr1515 and @Jabba_the_gut have built some amazing basses(I have at least one from each) and have a solid reputation on here. My own local custom builder, Kersey Guitars, has only recently opened his works and is building his reputation by turning out good quality instruments. Jon Letts besmirches the reputations of small luthiers by his actions - however we should remember that he is doing damage to his own reputation and integrity and we should not judge other luthiers by his performance. Personally I'd be back in the Small Claims Court asking them to enforce the original judgment. This may involve a Legal Charge on his home, which will mean if/when the property is sold YOU get paid. I played Hot Water with a band. Fingerstyle. Nobody cared 🙂 Make sure you relax your arm/muscles every chance you get. Let your arms hang down, so blood flows. When practicing, instead of trying to play faster, try playing it slower and slower and... (with a metronome). Your playing will become more precise which will result in being able to play it faster, less messy, with less effort. We played this live version:4 points

So I did exactly the same, bought the California blue P, fitted a EMG Geezer B and a USA P neck that I had. But @Muzz is absolutely right, the original maple jazz width Squier neck is sublime but I will be selling mine (brand new if any interest here 😉😂). Anyhow I’m chuffed to bits with my P project. Rehearsed it tonight and it was the dogs dangling bits and best of all weighs 7.9lbs and no neck dive. Before: After4 points

SOLD Price drop to £475 For sale, absolutely no trade offers whatsoever please, and yes I really mean that. 2021 Fender Player 75th anniversary Precision bass, in black / black / maple, 34” long scale, right handed, with upgraded pickups, knobs & wiring, and gig bag. Before I go any further as I know how important this can be, it weighs 3.9Kg / 8.6lbs on my digital luggage scale. It’s still a big ol’ chunk of wood, but lighter than every USA P I’ve had and balances well. It’s in excellent condition as you can see from the photos, has been well looked after (always in hard case when not being played) & is very shiny! There are no dings, paint chips, chunks out of the neck or headstock nibbles. The only minor cosmetic blemishes are: some scratching on the pickguard, 3 longish scratches on the back of the body below the cutaway (very hard to show well on photos as the body is so shiny that it just acts as a mirror!), and some small scratches looking down from the top of the body towards the pickguard, where I tried a trick I read about, which was to slightly unscrew 2 pickguard screws and slide a pick into the gap. I put a Tortex wedge in there, then when I slid it out, that powdery coating stuff that’s on them when new left these scratch marks on the body (I won’t be doing that again!). I’m guessing these may be able to be polished out by someone who knows what they’re doing, but if you know anything about black basses, these marks really aren’t that bad compared to the battle scars than can and do end up on them, and only really noticeable in certain lights / angles anyway, but I’d rather mention these minor blemishes as I pride myself in honest descriptions. It has a really lovely gloss poly maple fingerboard with nice fast satin urethane finish on the back of the neck. Usual 1.625” P width nut. The neck profile is fantastic, and always felt ‘just right’ to me. It’s not scrawny, but far from baseball bat territory, very comfy on the hands. Front to back, with digital calipers, it measures 0.825” at the 1st fret, and 0.905” at the 12th fret. I’d say it’s the nicest Precision neck I’ve ever played, and this includes USA models. The fretboard edges are nicely rounded and smooth. I know this isn’t always the case with Mexican Ps, but it genuinely feels as smooth and round as a USA neck to me. I’m actually quite sad to see it go generally, but especially for how nicely the neck plays. It has a Fender 75th anniversary logo on the back of the headstock, which is a nice touch. It’s strung with GHS Pressurewound M7200 (44-106) rollerwound ‘Alloy 52’ strings with plenty of life left in them. They are smooth and really sing. If you don’t want them, I can keep them & put some nickel rounds on instead, just let me know. Stock open gear tuners & bridge. Pickups have been upgraded to the excellent Fender Custom Shop CS62s. Box included. Wiring upgraded to USA specs via a Northwest Guitars Precision bass wiring kit: 250K CTS pots, 0.047uf orange drop capacitor & switchcraft jack. Great full range of tones compared to the stock pots. Knobs upgraded to Fender Tele / P chrome, knurled flat top knobs (099-13600-000) to fit the 1/4 inch pots, as the stock knobs were slippery & not very good. It has a non Fender 3-ply BWB pickguard. Please note I no longer have the stock pickups, wiring, knobs & pickguard, so these are not included in the sale. Feel free to check my Basschat feedback & PM me if you want to buy it or need more photos. It’s set up with a nice low to medium action & the truss rod turns as it should. It’s sold as seen and described, with the inspection tag but otherwise no paperwork or tools. Serial number shows 2021, I’ve run it through the Fender serial number lookup, and it shows as registered May 2021, see photos for spec sheet. I bought this bass in person from an eBay seller in January 2023, her son got it new & had barely played it as ended up with a different bass. They even kept the tag, which is included here. I paid £480 for this, and have spent £145 on upgrades (pickups 100, wiring loom, pots & knobs 45). It hasn’t been heavily gigged, so I think £575 is a fair price for a great condition P bass with top upgrades (& a free gig bag). I’d go as far as to say that this upgraded beast with a delightful neck and relatively light weight (for a Precision) is an outrageous bargain considering the price of a new American Pro 2 these days. I’ve owned this for a year and a half, which is quite something given the basses that have ‘passed through’ the last few years. Every time I tried anything (including dabbling in short scale), I always came back to this one. I’m a little sad to be selling it, as it’s easily as good as any USA P I’ve had, but my holy grail bass has finally come up, so I have no choice. If money wasn’t an issue (it is), I’d love to be keeping it. I’m certain that someone will be very happy with this bass. I have no box or packing materials, so am listing this as collection only from Southport. I work near St. Helens, so could meet up in that area too, or somewhere in the North West within reason. There is no hard case included in the sale, but I can hand it over in a basic padded gig bag, which from doing a lot of googling I think is a Traditional Strat / Tele bag, it fits fine, but has no straps even though there are clips for them, just carry handles, 8mm padding and a pocket. No timewasters please and absolutely no trade offers whatsoever. Hoping to sell this to an established Basschatter. Edit: Sorry must have missed this when posted the ad, think I caught this partially on one pic, but forgot to mention it, there is a 1cm scratch / scrape mark on the floor-facing edge of the lower horn, just added a final pic showing it. My favourite bass is my 2003 Warwick Corvette Standard. I’ve owned it for 17 years, and I’m sure it’s got some magic in it. I’ve had other Corvette Standards, and I’ve got other ‘nicer’ and ‘fancier’ Corvettes, but this one is special. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia of being my first ‘Wick, but I love it. It didn’t have the most careful first owner, and it’s not exactly been a garage queen with me, and it had picked up plenty of scratches and dents along the way. I decided that I wanted it to look as good as it feels, so I started cooking up a plan. First of all, I stripped it down. Without any hardware, the Swamp Ash body and neck felt astonishingly light - I was tempted to see if I could throw it over the roof of the house! (Even with hardware, it’s only around 3.6kg/8lbs.) Then I set about making a scratchplate. Having never done this before, my favourite bass seemed like the right place to start. Now I know that Warwick sell pickguards for Streamers, and I like the idea but I’ve always felt that they weren’t quite the right shape, so I drew out my own on a piece of cereal box. I then photocopied it, glued the piece of paper to a piece of 6mm ply and rough cut it out with a jigsaw. I did lots of drilling and hand filing to get the neck pocket and pickup hole right… …and then did the same for the outer edge. Then I borrowed a router from a friend, and had my first ever go at routing cutting the scratchplate out of 4-ply pearloid, and putting the 45 degree bevel on. It didn’t come out exactly perfect, but it’s not far off. (This picture is before further refinement with sandpaper, and although it’s still not perfect, it’s a bit better). After then, I took it to Rob at Manton Customs who added pearloid blocks and refretted it. There’s a lovely YouTube video about it, which I found slightly disturbing to watch - it’s not every day you get to see someone taking a chisel to one of your favourite possessions! He does beautiful work, and he’s a lovely chap to boot. Then I took it to Dave Wilson for paint, and it turned out beautifully (as expected!). I also went for a matching headstock, and took the opportunity to swap my broken Just-A-Nut II for a shiny brass JAN III. Then it was just a case of reassembly (most of which Dave did) to see what it all looked like! And a bonus pic with my ‘05 Ltd Ed. I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I’m happy!3 points

@EddieG - honestly mate, I wish you all the best, I hope whatever plan you have comes to fruition and ends up being the downfall of Jon in as many ways as possible. He's a leech and doesn't deserve to be a human. If one believes in reincarnation, I'd like to think he'll come back as a snail that someone accidentally steps on, but that lives on - almost bifurcated - for many days before succumbing to said bifurcation. You - well, I hope you get what you're owed and that your next venture into custom basses is more successful. Alan at ACG is an excellent man to deal with - superb communication and basses that make Jon's builds look like trash (not hard).3 points

How on earth does one sort the wheat from the chaff? How does everyone get paid? I recognised maybe ten bands and gave up scrolling. My idea of Hell to be honest.3 points

Absolutely. This patch I’ve set up with knobs for cutoff, resonance, envelope speed, envelope depth, envelope sensitivity, dry/wet mix, envelope self mod (filter FM) and the toggle switch selects between the three envelope responses of compressed, linear and expanded. However, you can go further than that and assign a soft control to any knob which would allow you to adjust three different parameters and have their ranges limited to anything you desire and mapped to any particular portion of the knob’s travel. I was thinking of modifying the patches to add filter FM on one side of the knob and distortion on the other.3 points

NPD yesterday! I got this funky little beauty. Still on my quest for "the filter", I've been really impressed by the demos for the EQD spacial Delivery. Has the usual up/down sweeps which I need from a filter (so many just go up) but has a funky sample and hold. I've had this feature in a prometheus deluxe I once owned, but couldn't get a musical sound out of that. This has one knob for rate and the random tones seem to a bit less... erm random 🤣 I could do sone wild stuff with this and my C4. It triggers well with all basses and simple to use, with plenty of resonance, and silent in the down mode (again a lot of downsweep filters are noisy) it also has an inreresting dual to blend between LP/BP/HP, which gives a bit more tonal variety than a switch. To top it all it comes in a funky sparkly white and orange. This will stay on the board (😉🤣) Octamizer isn't new, but they sound huge together.3 points

@EddieG, I was entirely sympathetic to where you had ended up in this farce until recently. The way Jon Letts has treated you has been beneath contempt. Once the case has been to court he should have paid you back and settled the judgement. His lack of talent as a luthier and apparent inability to make a viable business out of making and selling instruments are key factors to consider - a previous poster had suggested that he should stop arsing around trying to make a living out of building basses and get a job, at least until he has paid his debt to you. If he doesn't fancy stacking shelves once that's done, he can always go back to ripping off other mugs hoping for a cheap boutique bass. I think by offering him the chance to build you another bass, you just invite more pain and disappointment. As has been noted, you also let him off the hook for the court judgement you had received as you're effectively renegotiating the settlement with Mr Letts by entering into a contract for a new bass (your consideration for that contract being the money already paid years ago). Job Letts surely isn't the only crooked builder out there, nor the only fool who took on too much work to get through. It's a tale as old as time that was born with the internet bass community, where a builder could quickly fill their order book and and have more on the build table than they could possible finish in a reasonable time frame. So the complicated outstanding orders get left sitting whilst new basses are made and sold off to keep the lights on and the circus going... FFS it happened with Joe Zon! One of the most renowned and longstanding luthiers in the field managed to get himself into a situation where his once-good name was dragged through the mud because he seemed unable or unwilling to finish a handful out outstanding basses over the course of several years. Oscar Pratt seemed like he could build a good looking bass but he too found himself apparently unwilling to finish outstanding orders leading to him being pilloried on Talkbass. I've always been skeptical of the business model of Jon Letts. I saw the instruments when they were first going round Basschat and frankly, they looked like some shonky shite that had been knocked out in a shed. You get what you pay for and they looked rubbish (well actually, Carl Thompson basses aren't cheap and the look rough and basic too). The world is full of dreamers hoping they're going to get a champagne experience for a lemonade price. Letts' work actually reminds of a Cristian Grosu of Grossman Guitars, another builder who appeared to hope to fill his order book by offering cheap builds and ultimately has delivered some very poorly made instruments. Guys like ACG, Fodera, Sei, Drozd etc have full order books because they're a proven quantity and the price they charge can be taken as a guarantee that they'll probably get it right.3 points

To be fair, I did say when Letts offered a resolution that I would post the developments; I feel that it benefits the bass community to know whether a luthier (who has previously taken others for money and been guilty of extremely dubious business practices, but who is still currently trading to unsuspecting buyers) has actually turned a corner or is still conducting himself in the exact same manner. If that doesn't have any value to you, that's fair enough, I get it. You could just scroll on though. Thanks for your input all the same.3 points

So lately I’ve been playing all my basses on rotation. Precisions with maple and rosewood, Jazzes with maple and rosewood, and Mustangs with rosewood (both Precision & Jazz width neck). The result being that after years of being a Precision with maple strung with steel rounds man I’m now def a Mustang with Jazz width neck strung with nickels man, I’m finding it much easier to play and I’m getting a sound that’s much more pleasing to my ears. Whoda thunk it!3 points

Up for sale my immaculate ESP LTD Deluxe Phoenix-1004, bought new by me about a year ago. Selling only as I've got a Fender Precision Troy Sanders which caters for my metal needs! There really isn't a mark that I can see on this, it's just about mint apart from the additional strap button I've added on the top horn to aid balance. Sounds absolutely immense with its EMGs, very nice to play with a very fast matt neck. Weight 9.57lb, 4.35kg. I'll include the strap as it's a really long one just for this bass. Schaller straplocks included. No case at all. Pick up from Bath, or I'm often up in Hertfordshire & am willing to deliver anywhere between the two, and as I like driving I'll deliver within 100 miles of Bath for free. I won't post unless I have absolutely no option, & I won't send overseas. Feel free to pop round & try it, I'm about a mile outside central Bath.2 points

Selling my tasty Yamaha BB2000, number 127 made on Jan 11th 1985. It's a beautiful thing to play, hear and look at – but for the last ten years or so it's been mostly the latter. It's in great shape for nearly 40 years – bar a single nick on the back side of the arm chamfer so you can't see it) and a few dings (pictured), plus the inevitable thumb rest scrape. So it's not mint – I'd describe it as good-excellent overall condition. Action is low, neck perfect (no marks on the back), frets good, truss rod works (I'll chuck in a homemade tool for adjusting it, but it won't need it) and it sounds absolutely immense, just the way they say. Set-up and pots rewired by a pro a few years ago. The toggle switch is new (the old one fell apart) and – full disclosure – when you flick from bridge to neck it sometimes needs a second go to make contact. Probably easily solved with contact cleaner. The underside of the back cover has been inscribed by a previous owner (who may or may not be on here). I also have the original case which is in ok condition bar the handle, which has worn through to metal and at some point I wrapped it in gaffa tape. Again, another easy solution with vinyl wrap or something. Any questions, please ask. I've seen a few on sale on here recently, and I've seen examples offered elsewhere asking crazy prices. I would much prefer a quick, painless sale – I can't package or post it, so you're welcome to come and give it a go here in South Lincs, or we can meet anywhere between Peterborough to Grantham across to North Norfolk. Or even a bit further. Timing might be an issue because I'm away a fair bit, but we can sort something out. Weight is 4.5kg according to my bathroom scales. Cheers! Simon H2 points

TONIGHT! Played Sousaphone with The Acid Morris for their Solstice (ish (Solstish?)) dance out under the concrete henge of Spaghetti Junction (Gravelly Hill Interchange for the pedants). The Acid Morris are like nothing you've ever seen, even in your wildest Psilocybin-fuelled fever dreams: Border Morris Dancing to techno remixes of traditional Morris tunes and tonight for the first time ever, a Sousaphone. Probably one of the weirdest things I've ever done, and possibly the world's first (?) Techno-Sousaphone-Morris Dance mashup (under Spaghetti Junction). It was a ton of fun, there were sermons (one entreated the audience (there was an audience!) to teach their tortoises to sing) , testimonies (mostly nonsensical (one about the benefits of Morris cats as opposed to Morris dogs (of which there are many))), there was a bit where we all cast soft toys into a bin bag (not sure why), a speech about how the Sousaphone is in fact the preferred instrument of the angels (followed by a short (improvised) Sousaphone solo) and several techno Morris dances. After that, it descended into a more or less full on rave (with Sousaphone accompaniment) which was ace - it was my first time jamming along to a techo DJ and it went down really well. I don't think anyone there had ever seen/heard a Sousaphone player jamming along with loud dance music under Spaghetti Junction. The ONE TIME your Sousaphone lights aren't charged up, you end up at a rave. LIVID. I was tempted to stay and have one of the funny looking peppermints that were going round, but my designated driver (who is also (sort of) the main idiot (and also my Dad)) was keen to nake a move (and I'm gigging tomorrow) so good sense prevailed and it was back home about 11:30 for a homebrew cider (ABV unknown) and a cheese and pickle roll instead. Their sound system has the potential for hooking up the SA C4 synth pedal, so there's every chance the next outing will involve Sousa -> Wireless mic -> synth pedal, which could be quite something.2 points

They're a boutique pedal outfit so £250 to £300 per unit is where they're at. Not the most expensive pedals out there but hardly Behringer. The name comes from a budget US amp company that went out of business in the late 60's that was very popular with blues players. I have a Supro amp that is basically an old Valco amp with a different badge. Decent gear, but some of it is a bit spendy.2 points

Thank you Lawrie. @EddieG, posting in a forum and then suggesting that people whose comments don't align with your views should 'just scroll on' is an interesting approach and perhaps indicative of at least part of the reason you're in this mess in the first place! Anyway, re the first post above, you and Letts are both in monkey traps of your own making. You both need to just let go of things, you can't do much about Letts, but get yourself out now, things won't get any better.2 points

It’s a built in feature and prompts people to select AI as an option when adding a description. My big concern with things like ChatGPT is that it scrapes the internet (vastly simplified i know) to create the text. What happens when the data it scrapes is all AI generated waffle? Are we going to be left with a population speaking AI. One huge pool of word soup that circles around a concept but never gets to the essence of anything. Entire populations speaking fluent marketing and politics. Man that is depressing.2 points

Every new business needs customers otherwise we’d end up with just Fender and Gibson. In the end, you have to put your trust in people sometimes, and they can let you down (as has happened here). I wouldn’t take the attitude and approach of Jon as indicative of every small scale luthier.2 points
