  1. Last night Bluesfire finally played my local, the Park Hotel. For some reason they had decided to squeeze us into the main bar, instead of the big room upstairs. At least it meant an easy load in. We expected a good crowd as we are well known in Barry and the gig was shared well on FB. We also had several people come from Cardiff and Penarth, good to know we can pull a audience in. Someone from Cwmbran who saw us at Borough Blues festival a few weeks ago brough friends, including a frend of my partner who hasn't seen her for 4 years! Also some very good local musicians turned up. So lots of people crammed into a medium size bar gave an excellent atmosphere. From the star there was cheering rather than applause, although virtually no dancing with the lack of space. We were very tight, although on two songs I felt convinced I was out of key, but it mah have been a weird effect of standing in a tiny space between my cab and the Pa... after a verse it sounded ok. A couple of songs people probably thought I was really creative as I flailed around trying different lines searching for the rig. Got bludgeoned into some extra songs so despite my defence of 45+45 elsewhere we ended up doing 50 + 60. Alex got loads of praise for his guitar work, including from a guy who is a brilliant player and has been a figure on the south Wales scene since the 70s. So, a really awesome evening, plus I was able to carry my gear as it was only a minutes walk away

  2. I have temporary custody of a pal's '63. As far as he's aware, it's never been taken apart It plays beautifully.

  3. I haven't played my gig yet, but it's going to be a tough one. It's 11 days since I tested positive for Covid and cancelled the gig last Saturday. Tonight's gig is going ahead, and I feel absolutely dreadful. I'm not testing positive since Thursday, but I'm well and truly hanging. The list of symptoms is too long to go into here. 9.30pm start, 2 sets, and I'm singing nearly half of them too. Wish me luck! Rob.

  4. We were somehow headlining last night at The Victory in Hereford... Three bands - TCCL from Leeds (decent band - good bassplayer!), Potbelly (from Washington State, hardcore but tight as!) and us... Our other bassplayer (Raph) brought the PA, and after a few minor teething problems, sound was pretty good - not too loud but still rockin'. We played pretty well considering our age (at least some of us!) and levels of infirmity, shapes thrown by guitar, head bangin' by Raph, getting right in the crowd's faces by Sam, some crazy cowbell licks by drums and lots of unnecessary widdling from me (I did say some of us are now beyond ancient). We even got 50-odd people in, there was some wild cheering (we normally frown on that sort of thing), we played for an hour because Raph suddenly burst into RATM's "Bullet in the Head" which we hadn't practised for ages and had to do an encore despite it being past my bedtime. And I was accosted by a young man who compared my playing to that of Mudvayne's Ryan Martinie, which was nice (though I did have to look him up just in case). Used the now-trusty ACG Recurve into Helix, BBE Pre and DBX compressor, Crown power and Markbass 4x10 - decent bottom end with good slap top-end.

  5. Overdue pedalboard update today. I've had a few new arrivals that, after much testing, has bumped other stuff off the board (a few bits now up for sale). In my usual rambling style, I thought I'd do a break down of the signal chain, and other details of how the board is looking right now... Input > Boss OC-5 Octave > Montreal Assembly PURPLL > Fuzzrocious Li'l Fella > Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler V2 > ZVEX Mastotron > WMD Geiger Counter Pro > Broughton JoshWah > Dr. Scientist Dusk (+ Moog EP-3 Expression Pedal) > GFI Synesthesia (+ GFI Triple Switch) > Hologram Electronics Microcosm > Source Audio Collider > Keeley Bassist Compressor > TC Electronic Polytune2 Mini > Output I also keep another Moog EP-3 on the floor pending the mood I'm in, usually connected to the Geiger Counter Pro or Microcosm. All pedals mounted on a Pedaltrain Jr Max, using an OCD In/Out Jack Kit, all cabled with EBS gold flat patch cables and powered by a CIOKS DC7 and 8 Expander (this power supply is a beast - barely tipping the 40% capacity mark for this board). While most of this stuff has been here for a while, the return of the Mastotron has been significant. I moved mine on years ago for various other boutique gated fuzz pedals, but coming full circle... nothing beats it for gated synthy fuzz. Utterly in love with pretty much everything here. I'm still in the honeymoon period with the JoshWah, but with minimal tweaking the Sense knob, it plays really well with all my dirt pedals. Overall, very happy!

  6. Headlined the Friday night of the Summer Sounds festival in Guisborough with the Elton tribute. Quite a hike from Leicestershire (not helped by closure of section of the M1 due to an accident plus general Friday afternoon traffic). Good gig tho, and a proper summer’s evening there. Decent sized crowd, friendly chilled atmosphere and a good blast to play. Dug out my P bass with flats which I haven’t used for a while and really enjoyed playing.

  7. Custom made for me a few years back, this is a superb neck through Les Paul version of a Bass 6, 30" scale, wenge neck and body, flame maple top under a nitro gold top. As it wears, that flame will reveal itself and it will look even more incredible. Seymour Duncan p90 stacked humbucker with coil tap on the volume control (pull up). Sounds immense - but it is heavy. 5kg...it used to be heavier if you can believe that! It went back to John for some additional weight relief (hence the different grained sections on the back, this is where the weight relief happened and then John made wooden covers to fill the weight relief pockets). Definitely more of a studio than stage instrument unless you have stronger shoulders than me. Some very minor marks but overall in very good condition. I love this thing but since getting an even more special bass 6 (EB2 converted to EB6...) I just don't use this enough and I need the space. Comes with old but high quality padded gig bag. Can be collected or can be posted at cost.

  8. Just got back from The Bull in Braintree - a venue that apparently hasn’t been putting bands on for long, but they have a nice area and very friendly staff. The gig itself was a mixed bag - halfway through the first set we had a few dancers/singers up and moving about, but with one song to go in the first half a *really* drunk guy came to the floor and was acting up. We hit the break, he continued to play up, there was a scuffle and he was thrown out. It killed the atmosphere and we didn’t get anyone back up until 3-4 songs to go in the second set. It is what it is. Back out again tomorrow, playing a social club where they’ve asked us not to play anything ‘too heavy’ - so we’re intrigued by what crowd we’ll have!

  10. Beautiful bass, but at the end of the day, I just don’t play it at all, which is a crying shame honestly. Here is Shaggys original description: ”1998 German made Warwick FNA bass (Corvette body shape, though it was never designated a Corvette). Lightweight swamp ash body with carved flame maple top, ebony pinstripe “binding” line in between. Amber “antique violin” finish, which seems to be a thin satin lacquer. Fully recessed Warwick straplocks (strap ends also supplied), gold plated hardware. Preamp (original factory fitted): Seymour Duncan 3-band 9V active circuit voiced specifically for MusicMan Stingray, with “slap bias” switching on vol control. Neck: Long (34’) scale 24-fret in ovangkol, with wenge board and JAN adjustable nut. Regularly waxed, so beautifully smooth. 2 mods to this bass: Original ceramic MEC pickup replaced with Aguilar AG 4M (Alnico V) MusicMan pickup; based on the original 1970’s MusicMan Stingray pickup. I personally much prefer the tone on this to the MEC; it’s slightly more scooped with prominent low mids, more growl and punch yet also more clarity. Original pickup included. Original neck swapped with one from a 2001 German made Warwick Streamer LX Jazzman. This was only because I preferred a slightly slimmer neck on the Streamer, and a slightly wider P profile neck on this bass. This has been my “go to” gigging bass over the last 6 years or so, simply because it’s so comfortable and ergonomic to play, and just always sounds good. I’ve never played another single-pickup bass so responsive to changes in right hand technique, whether with pick or fingers.” It’s a really fabulous thing, but just doesn’t get used. Trades…. Fender Jazz or a Yamaha BB (Japan) is favourite, we’re also looking for a decent double bass here at Rayman towers. I would rather get cash to be honest, but you can always ask. Warwick gig bag included Thanks for having a gander Russ

  12. Found this 2001 Musicman Stingray bass in Blue Pearl 3EQ and I’m very pleased with the condition for a 23yr old bass ! Neck, frets, rosewood fingerboard all in a near new condition ! Fresh 45-100 strings fitted and truss rod tweeked and intonation checked and she’s good to go as my main gigging bass Plays and sounds amazing and it was a sensible price too No EB Musicman case but such is life but it came with a serviceable gig bag ( and since typing this case has arrived too .. thank you GAK )

  13. You may be familiar with the expression, "now there's something you don't see every day". I suspect that it is appropriate in this case. These handmade basses are each unique and they're a right bugger to date reliably, but this one ticks all the boxes for the company's heyday: 1964-66. Not a re-issue or a restoration job, this is absolutely the real deal ... a bass that was bought while surf music was in the charts and then gigged relentlessly for many years. You want mojo? It's got mojo? You want to see what genuine buckle-rash looks like when no angle grinder was involved? As far as I can tell, this ws all-original and unmolested when I bought it many years ago, and I've looked after it. Yes, all that wear was there when I bought it. Currently strung with Black Beauties (or something very similar - hey, it was a long time ago, alright?) this has all the shortscale thuddy goodness you'd expect from this era. Comes with the cheap-but-sturdy rigid gigbag it rests on in these photos, but realistically I'm not about to entrust this thing to a courier. It might get scratched. Collection from Harrow or the West End, possible meet-up within a sensible distance from Harrow.

  21. Gibson Rippers caught my attention in my teens when I first saw one in an old Bell's music catalogue. Out of all the basses the Ripper really stood out and for many years I always wanted one. The first one I saw (and played) in the flesh was @neepheid 's at a bass bash. The second being the one I was lucky enough to bag here a couple of months ago. I love it. I had it set up professionally with new strings and it plays superbly. It's light weight too, surprising considering its size! So I guess this is a dream bass for me. p.s It fits nicely in a Hiscox Teardrop case too!

  25. The output of an amp is AC, on average zero - that is, it spends as much time positive as negative. A DC offset is a DC voltage permanently added to the signal, so the amp is sending power to the speaker and heating it up even when there's no input signal, though only about a quarter of a watt with a 1.5V offset. The cone is always going to be pushed out or pulled in (depending on the polarity of the offset) from its resting place.

  27. Mexican Fender Precision Bass from 2017/18 in beautiful Lake Placid Blue (now discontinued). This bass has been upgraded with Seymour Duncan SPB1 pickups and a mirror scratchplate for full 'Steve Harris vibes'. I have also added a Badass II bridge. Excellent condition apart from an unfortunate ding behind the top back edge of the bass (can't be seen from front).... see pic. I can swap pickguard to white if preferred. I can also swap bridge back to Fender bridge. Looking for a very reasonable £450 for this. Cash on collection, Paypal (you pay fees) or direct Bank transfer. Postage likely to be approx £30. Please see my extensive, positive feedback thread for assurance of a clean, honest transaction.

  34. Here is my 62 Fender, originally P but now PJ, bass modded by others and me over the years. I have owned it since around 1983. I had no idea of it's potential value back then and sent it to my favourite Luthier, Alasdair Watt in Aberdeen (now sadly no longer with us) to make it into the all round bass that I needed for the work I was doing then. He shaved the C neck down to Jazz like proportions. He added a bridge pup (I think Kent Armstrong) and put an out of phase switch in for added tonal range. It had a beat up natural finish when I got it. Alasdair painted it sunburst. It had Schaller machines added. I had the original rusty Fender bridge re nickel plated and that's what is on it to this day. The pots have been replaced but I still have the originals (see pic). I took it to bits in lockdown (see photos) and had the wiring for the original split pup repaired/redone. I replaced the perished rubber pup beds which had no spring left in them. I shimmed the neck and removed the out of phase switch which was rarely if ever used. I discovered an earlier mod where a pup had been added right beside the neck. This had gone by the time I bought it in '83. I sometimes dream that when I shrug off this mortal coil it will be buried with me. Me with the PJ in '88

  41. This is my old bass, I used and enjoyed it for a good amount of gigs over a 2 year period. It sounds huge, with no dead spots and is sonically a great middle ground between Fender P, J and Stingray. Why did I move it on, then? I'd used the bass in 2 bands that I stopped playing with around the same time. I was left with a bitter taste and wanted to rip it up and start again so to speak; I'm yet again using / doing battle with a Fender Precision. There's nothing quirky, student or deliberately whimsical about the Fallout design. It's louder and got a fuller spectrum than pretty well anything I've ever used. It'll do any style very well. GLWTS

  43. That site is indeed really useful, I used it a lot when I was trying to figure out the age of my own early 70s Jazz. It’s clearly not an exact science, mine has pots from late 73, is 4 bolt, with a case that came in in 74, long G bridge screw, I’ve just settled on somewhere around 73/74. 😅 The date that site gives for 3 bolts on a jazz is late 73.

  45. I encountered my first instance of a boomy room/stage where a variable HPF greatly improved things this week. I have a Schalltechnik Vong HPF + LPF on my pedalboard, my main purpose of which is to make my fuzz sound palatable with the LPF when using a DI. But at this gig we were in a village hall, hollow portable stage, vocal PA only and using my Ampeg PF50T with two 1x12" cabs. I was struggling with boomy low notes while we were setting up, and raising the HPF on the pedal cleaned it up with less thinning of the rest of the sound than with the bass control on the amp. It's literally the first time I've had this issue in several years of using this setup, but I was glad to have the HPF there.
