  1. Yesterday, was actually the day, not the evening. It was a pub, not too far away in the deep country. Mains lead going across the road, playing in the village square, which seems to belong to the pub, next to a little stream, sunny, under a gazebo, pretty rural. Lovely afternoon, we dialed down the rockiness, I persuaded the group that we didn't have to do 3 hours, and it made for a chilled and well supported set, with a roast in the middle. Audience were very supportive and I love the outdoor gigs as its just so much easier to do the sound - just turn everything up, although it has to be said, with the 2x RCF Evox 8s outdoor, we were flat out with nowhere to go. Luckily, we didn' tneed anywhere to go, but if we had that would have been it. But it was clear and no complaints from anyone. Landlady loved it too, so free drinks and part of the roast!

  2. Played our monthly Sunday late afternoon gig at The Sun Inn in Beverley. Very quiet when we arrived so we were worried the great weather had kept people at home having BBQs in their gardens. However around 4.30pm people started to come in so by the time we kicked off at 5pm it was getting full. Plenty of requests, ranging from Tony Bennett through to Del Amitri and George Ezra. Some old friends in too so great to have a catch up in the breaks. Fortunately I also remembered to take my big electric fan otherwise the heat would have been a problem- as it was I’d just restrung my Ibanez bass and had to tune every couple of songs. Ended up doing a couple of encores before finishing around 8.30pm. Really enjoyable gig.

  3. So after the show yesterday I rushed back to Hereford to see my band playing at the gig they had! They were booked for a party in the bar at the theatre and used the A guitarist on bass and the B guitarist on guitar, the A drummer was available, and the B trumpeter was as well (our hottest hot lips was on the show with me) so they took the gig. Really great to see them all play. But it was nice to back in the saddle this evening. Pleasant wedding at Stone Manor just outside Kidderminster, a nice gig, just Sunday evening vibes after a warm day, some were in the mood for partying but I think a lot had an eye on the clock. Still, enjoyed it and it was nice and rowdy from about half the crowd by the end.

  4. This arrived over the weekend and I thought I would offer my thoughts. Quality build and feel, probably the best in any amp I’ve owned. Size / Weight is ideal as not too large so will fit small and large width cabs and heavy enough not to easily move on your cab. Features: wow they have thought of everything you are going to need Superb EQ adjustments HPF adjustable Power Amp Damping control ( from tight and modern to loose and full valve amp feel Ability to run at 2ohms Quiet Fan Powerful and Loud Plus more ! Ive had so many amps in the last five years and I always felt they were good and acceptable but had something missing. My best sounding amps have been SVT CL and V4B but way too heavy and large now. The WD800 has a valve pre amp, power amp can feel like a valve amp when playing and the ability to drive the input to get a bit of valve breakup is awesome. This and my EICH T900 and hopefully my forever amps until the itch for change comes which hopefully is never !!

  6. Sunday's gig was a record for providing stuff for other band members to use. I did not bring it for others - it is all my stuff, for me to use. I used a Philips screwdriver to tighten up my own strap button. But the drummer said "are there any headphones?" I had a set The electric guitarist asked for a plectrum. I had a dozen. The acoustic guitarist was complaining that his battery was faulty (it was 5 ½ years old), and I had bought a spare for my bass the day before. So, I handed it over. The electric guitarist asked for a cable extension for his IEMs. I had two. 5 items needed - only one by me, and four by others. I take the view that, if the other band members can't play, then I would be playing on my own - and I don't want that. However, I am wondering why the need for headphones, batteries, and a plectrum, took other musicians by surprise... Gentle rant over. I was happy to be able to help.

  7. Maybe we should design a universal band first aid box. Paid for out of band funds, of course - but to be maintained and policed by bassists only... I carry: -handful of batteries (9v and AA) -picks -bass strings -a couple of every likely lead -2 DI boxes -a cheapo supermarket pocket tool kit (mini screwdrivers, small screwdriver with interchangable heads, pliers, snips) -little folding multi-tool thing -cheap Behringer cable tester -mini torch -a plastic box with a variety of audio and stand adaptors (eg minijack to full jack, RCA>jack) -USB leads -memory sticks/SD cards -a couple of mains>USB plugs -gaffa -biros and a Sharpie -blank paper -paracetamol and ibuprofen, plasters -disposible ear plugs It isn't all sex, drugs and glamour, I hasten to add.

  8. Charles has released a couple of video (IIRC) documenting his bass playing career since he was a teenager. To paraphrase: he's worked bloody hard, moved to America to get into Berkley and was gigging seven days a week. He turned professional as a touring and session bassist. But it was a sheer chance that he recorded something for Davie504 that went viral and he realised he could make more money making youtube videos than he could as a session musician so he refocused and grew his own social media presence and is now one of the most successful social media musicians. That's just good business sense in my book. He found a niche and grabbed it. So what if he's not doing the same thing as thousands of other bassists? It's worked out well for him. Best of luck to him.

  10. For sale / trade is my Fender PB70-70US. Made in Japan in 1989/90. Very dark rosewood fretboard. Ash body - made of one piece as far as I can see. US pickups. Frets in excellent condition. A few minor dings, scratches and touch-ups here and there. Has CTS pots so these are not original. Pickguard is also likely a replacement as catalog shows PB70s with black pickguards only. Really nice looking and playing ‘70s RI Precision bass. 40mm nut width and 4.2kg. Possibly trade for Mustang bass.

  11. We did a corporate thing on Saturday afternoon, a manufacturer of road sweeping equipment had their annual summer do for employees and their families. We did an hour in the afternoon, nothing particularly remarkable other than it is the first time I have set up in a Sweeper Test Area. New vocalist settling in well and this sort of low pressure, short gig is good for building confidence between us all.

  12. We were up in the wilds of Northumberland again plying our Americana trade. Great gig, well attended and received, which is all the more note worthy given it was about 25C and sunny outside. For the first time, we had the drunk punter, an older guy who ‘wanted to get up and play a song he’d written’. No amount of explaining that we couldn’t do that, that the audience were there to see us and not him etc could dissuade him. Fortunately, shortly after the start of the second set he got the message and left.

  13. If you allow yourself to be the band dad once you will always be the band dad. Keys player - "I've forgotten my iPad" Me - "Well just download the Behringer app for your phone then." Keys player - "Which one is it?" Me - "I have no idea, I don't use it" He finally downloads one... Keys player - "How do I use this?" Me - "I have no idea, I don't use it" Keys player - "Well that's not very helpful, is it?" All this while I'm setting the PA up and he has already got a pint in his hand.

  14. Forgot to mention in my gig post but we had a guy celebrating his 70th and was a pro singer when he was younger and still does the occasional gig. He had spoken to us a few times before at this venue so we thought we would get him up for a song and he did a great job of Lets Stick Together. I was fair impressed considering he had never sung the song in a long time and never with us. We do play the song exactly as per the single so that makes it easier. Dave

  15. There we go… Hipshot bridge fitted, and I’m a lot happier with the string spacing. The strings now go directly over the pole pieces, and the string width over the neck is also right for me. Job done

  16. Acapela Studio in (or very) near Cardiff on Friday night with Wah - great and quirky venue with homemade pizzas laid on. The journey there was horrible - about 4 minutes away from the venue I missed an exit and entered a 45 minute traffic jam... Got to use the orange P bass I bought from @Teyeplayer in anger for the first time and was very happy with it indeed. A couple of days before the show I decided to swap to roundwounds and I think it was a good decision. Until the next change of heart, obviously. Our first gig for about four months, postponed from our spring tour and I was a little rusty - a couple of clangers should be firmly laid at my door but no-one seemed to mind. Left a bloody lighting stand there but if turns out a friend of a friend lives nearby so there's hope of recovery! Photo nabbed off Twitter.

  17. After some thought, one rehearsal and one gig its obvious to me that I'm very much not a modern, active bass enthusiast at all so I'm putting this up for sale... I've only uploaded one pic as I'm sure everyone knows the shape of the bass, it's in perfect condition and a superb bass but just not for me. I can supply more pics if required. Owned for just over a month, comes with a Spector gig bag, a new set of Rotosound strings and some gold Schaller straps locks fitted.. I can't seem to find any of these for sale in the UK at the moment so this is a good opportunity to grab one. Im more than willing to courier the bass if you're not far from the M25, i'm also fairly regularly in the Coventry area. If not im sure we can sort something out about posting. TRADES NOW ADDED.. I'd be interested in the following, Black or White Fender P bass (maple or rosewood neck) Duff McKagen PJ in black or white Shuker JJ Burnel P Bass Thunderbird

  18. Just f***ing love them, simple as. Saw them miming at the Olympic closing ceremony last night, and even that made me smile. Over and above always seeming to land albums at pivotal points in my life - I was living in Venice Beach when BSSM was released, fell in love to One Hot Minute only to experience a very painful break-up soundtracked by Californication, with something of a recovery to Stadium Arcadium (yep, long and tough tough break-up) - it’s probably also a combination of my being the same age as Flea, having been a slap player in a funk-rock band in 85-86, and having that strange sense that no matter how much I love mote credible styles, and especially Jazz and upright, if there was one band I’d love to have played in…. Another upside, wearing a RHCP t-shirt tends to get you served quicker in bars 😆

  19. The drummer equivalent would be if you had a second kit with metal-shelled drums that you wanted to play on a single song. Besides I used to be in a band whose drummer had a single rack tom and no other toms at all. Just by listening to his playing you wouldn't think that it wasn't at least a 2-tom kit.

  20. That's unusual - a guitarist wanting to tune up. As for my Bass Case, I only have it because I was previously forgetting stuff. By putting everything in one place, it was easier to store at home, and would guarantee that when I picked it up, I would have everything that I needed. Tuner. Spanners. Screwdrivers. Battery. Capo. Guitar strings. Mandolin strings. Electric guitar strings. Contact cleaner spray. Swiss Army Knife. Everything that I need - but it turns out that the people who need it are the clowns with whom I play. As @lemmywinks said, I am becoming the band dad. That's great all the while I am helping the band out of an emergency. But it only became an emergency because they didn't plan for the eventuality of (say) a flat battery, or, oooh, the possibility that they might want to strum the guitar that they bought with them. Thinking back, I have needed five batteries before or during a gig. Two for me, which made me always have them with me. And three for other band members who think that the time to change the battery is 5 minutes after it fails. So far, it hasn't cost me much - three batteries from Pound-U-Love or whatever, is not going to break the bank. But it does show me that I am working with people who think that winging it is a lifestyle choice...

  21. Bands who want to use an instrument for just one song that requires extra setting up and additional sound checking is a massive bugbear of mine. I suppose if you are the only band on and have plenty of time to set up and sound check it's OK, but in the musical world I inhabit unless you are playing last having more than 20 minutes for set up and sound check is luxury and even if you are "headlining", every unnecessary minute your band spends on the soundcheck takes that time away from the other on the bill and IMO makes you come over like petulant prima-donnas. I been able to cut down on the amount of gear and hence set-up time one of my bands uses and talk various band members out of bringing additional equipment that's only going to be used for a few minutes in a 30-45 minute set. I know we all think that everything we do and all the equipment we use is absolutely essential, but I can guarantee that most of the audience would never know the difference if a song was played on a six string or 12 string guitar, and any tuning differences could be compensated by using a capo or just singing a semi-tone lower.

  22. I believe this is the bassist's lot in life. It sort of makes sense though: we have chosen a role in the band which is actually utterly fundamental but perhaps not as loaded with glamour as certain other roles - perhaps the personality traits that lead to that also lead to us being the person who carries a toolkit, knows how to set up the PA, hustles gigs, prints setlsits, manages the social media, carries a float for merch, knows how to de-escalate the singer etc etc etc I'm not sure how firmly my tongue is in my cheek here.

  25. Another annual week of WODYs, one of Worcester’s musical theatre youth groups at the local Swan Theatre. And another round of Addams Family and load of Englanders doing their best to read Latin rhythms and pass them off as convincing. The band are great people though, very much the opposite of Stewblack’s experience mentioned a little earlier, we have a blast. Didn’t play my absolute finest but passable. On the matinee the MD shortened a vamp during a scene change spontaneously just as I had a big leap up the neck which I had to look down for- resulting in a two bar unscheduled bass solo that I had to style out….Spent the rest of the day being ribbed mercilessly by the rest of the band.

  26. WITHDRAWN Bought new from Andertons a few years ago. These are fantastic basses - a solid, well put-together instrument which weighs approx. 8.1lbs/3.65kg; well balanced and feels good to play. Great sounding pickups, excellent fit and finish, and lots of tonal options with the blend knob. In my opinion this is one of the best colours Reverend ever did but it has since been discontinued, so this is a rare opportunity to pick up a very cool looking bass. Roasted maple neck with some nice flaming. Please note this sale is for the bass only - no case or gig bag is included. I have gigged this bass extensively and is In very good condition with a few little marks, the usual swirling on the scratchplate and some genuine buckle rash for that extra mojo! Selling to fund a new purchase and it's strictly one in, one out. Not interested in any trades, thanks. Option to collect in person (about 20 miles from Belfast) or happy to post to any UK address, with buyer arranging their own courier. Will be posted in its original box with all the case candy. The details from the Reverend website: Body - Korina Solidbody Pickups - Thick Brick Bridge, Split Brick Neck BridgeString-thru-body or Top-load, 3/4" spacing Neck - 5-Piece Maple/Walnut, Satin Amber Finish Scale - 34" Neck Profile - Medium Oval Fingerboard - Roasted Maple, 12" Radius Frets - 21 - 0.110"W x 0.050"H Truss Rod - Dual Action, Headstock Access Tuners - Hipshot Ultralight, 1/2" Dia. 29. I don't really know if there is love for this pedal anymore, but I still love mine. However, I wanted it to be more clean. I swapped valves again. I tried a 5751. Too much overdrive (coming from a 12AT7). I got myself today a 12AY7. I love it. Now I can get some clean tones or overdriven sounds, but the Drive Gain is useful (before it was almost all the way down always). If you guys feel like experimenting (and prefer a little bit of a cleaner sound) I really recommend you to put a 12AY7. You won't regret it.

  33. There are a helluva lot of bass and guitar channels on YT that are as dry as chaff. I even find Rick Beato's stuff somewhat hard going a lot of the time. CB has a light touch, doesn't take himself seriously and his gimmicks are way more entertaining than most I've come across.

  34. This thread appears to be a lot of hot air about nothing. I’ve just watched a bunch of Charles videos, including the stones one, he clearly has talent and is a decent musician. The You Tube stuff is just showboating for clicks and revenue and is a tiny portion of what he can do. The TikTok /YouTube world is not one I am part of or interested in as it just seems to be fragments of a barrage of information fighting for everyone’s somewhat limited attention. If he has harnessed this world to fund his playing good on him.

  37. I have been using my Zoom B6 for the first half of the year as the nature of the Hulla band gigs has meant I've needed a few rapid changes. (From the dirty Squire-esque sound I've been using on 'Town Called Malice' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' to a psychadelic flange/phase on our version of 'Sweet Child of Mine' (which follows the Sheryl Crow style rather the the G'n'R original) and clean P Bass sounds for the Motown numbers. But the gigs lined up for the second half of the year are shorter and the set lists less varied. Coupled with smaller venues (we're usually a 13 piece) I've decided to down size to a small board which I'm currently using in rehearsals. The goal is to end up with just the MS60b although I do like the sound of the Ampeg. Our sound guy has a shelving filter on my channel which negates the need for the Broughton H24. The DI is there so I am self contained (for most Hulla gigs I DI and use IEM but one gig coming up is a multi band line up and we're not in charge of the sound, so I may be using back-line and/or DI-ing). The MS60b gives me a clean channel, tuning/mute, a filter and chorus.

  38. Not exactly a great VST deal, but anyone on the fence upgrading EZ Drummer v2 to v3 I'd say it's worth it: €99 if upgrading from v2, or €179 if buying for the first time. v3 can go full screen, has grid editor, sounds good - some good new kits and presets and midi patterns, seamlessly integrates with the v2 libraries and with my DAW (Reaper). It can be almost too easy to make decent sounding full song drum tracks - it feels like cheating! Can do stuff like drag in files or input a basic rhythm and it will suggest drum patterns that will work with it, it'll then also suggest all the other parts of the song to fit (intro, bridge, fills etc), then you can select a different feel for each part (e.g. amount of snare hits, velocity etc) add some 'humanizing' and change drum kits and preset sounds/fx etc. can have enough control that it feels like you've had artistic input to make something reasonably original while all of the technical drum programming work is done for you (like I imagine a producer/musical director that can't drum but knows what they want to hear, telling a drummer 'play a 120bpm funky breakbeat with no kick drum, use a tight kit, loud snare with reverb, add a fill here, then a swung bridge' etc.). Can have a decent quite original full song drum track made in a few minutes with no technical drum programming skills. Or, you could do all the programming via the grid editor if you want. The downside is potentially being sucked into buying expansion packs and midi files, e.g. there aren't Reggae drum kit presets or midi patterns, Reggae drums are €89 and reggae midi files €29. Do that with a few different genres and it could get pricey.

  40. I was completely unaware of this guy, (in fact, up until this thread started and I listened to the Tears in heaven cover) I hear, total mastery of an instrument and the theory to back it up. In addition, he's earning more from playing bass than 98% of the people on Basschat. Does he need to play in a band? Compose? Produce bass lines that other bassists like or want to learn? No he doesn't. He's entertaining people, that's his chosen job and he's doing it well.

  41. It took Metallica five albums to break through back in the day. Most of their contemporaries never really broke through - Exodus, Anthrax, Megadeth, Over Kill and so on. They had the odd hit, but never really went fully mainstream. These bands still headline festivals worldwide. They're still around and doing OK. Many other, younger bands who have come up in this era of Spotify and Youtube are up there with them on these festival bills, and will also do OK. The model has changed. The music has evolved. The methods of making music are much, much better now. But good songs are still being written, people are listening to them, and people are still making a living from it. Which brings me to Charles Berthoud. The man is an excellent musician, educated at Berklee (which is why he relocated to the US), plays several instruments extremely well (he also plays piano and guitar to almost as high a standard as he plays bass), is an fantastic composer and arranger, and he's found an outlet to make a living from his skills. He knows the game has changed, and he's adapted to this new reality. There's also more than a whiff of gatekeeping bass snobbery here - if you look at guitarists who do the same thing (I'm thinking the likes of Bernth, Ola Englund, Eric Calderone, Sophie Burrell, Alexandr Misko, even well-established guitar legends like Jom Gomm, Andy McKee and Tommy Emmanuel) they don't get half as much grief as Charles, Davie, Danny Sapko and so on. Is it because they're bass players playing non-traditional bass parts and daring to push the boundaries a bit? I wish him all the luck in the world, and I hope to continue to be entertained by him for many more years.

  42. Can I just ask: 1. Are you being paid £100k per gig? 2. Are you in some sort of modern slavery gang? 3. Do you lose a stag do bet and this is the forfeit? 4. Is any member of your family being held hostage by a mafia type cartel? If anybody in a band I was in behaved like that to the rest of the band, threw stuff they'd been loaned on the ground and walked off, unless there was a compelling reason to stay (see above) I'd walk away or better still, tell aforesaid prat, not to come back. If somebody came to you and told you the above story, what would you say to them? This all sounds a bit like an abusive relationship to me. If you are doubting your own ability, partly because he's gaslighting you, I'd be looking at exit options. This therapy session is worth precisely what you have paid, zilch. All the best Rob

  47. I do a gig, with the same band on August Bank holiday on the Seafront in Deal. I've been doing it for 12 years now. We would often have special guests turn up and play and our mate Chris (RIP) would play his 12 String acoustic on Wish you were here. Every year he turned up with a guitar lead that didn't reach the desk (which was only a few feet away) I always had a spare. Last year it was his Son that came and played the 12 string on the same song (it was quite emotional) I can't remember if he had a long enough lead but I had the spare just in case. I always have spare mic leads, vocal mics, bits and pieces, gaffa tape etc

  49. I would have nipped it in the bud right there. Unless the song, and more to the point, the 12-string will feature heavily in the set, there's no point using it as a reference for sound check. Some people don't understand the difference between soundcheck and rehearsal!
