  3. Have been on the lookout for a while for a Fender US Standard 2013-16 Precision in Olympic White with maple neck, weighing less than 4kg. I’ve found recently that on brightly lit stages I can’t see where I am on a rosewood fretboard. Having a bad back basses under 4kg are my limit and for some reason even though I’ve arthritis in my left thumb playing a big fat neck doesn’t cause me pain. I’d decided to seek one out as Precisions are my fave basses so I’m going to play them until I physically can’t anymore. This one, a 2014 turned up so I bought it. Has a set of 45-100 Chromes on it and they sound & play really nice.

  4. One last bump, I’ll be taking this down tomorrow (Sunday first September) - just let me know if there’s any interest A beautiful 23 inch scale mini Bass, superbly handcrafted by Basschat’s own Jabba_the_Gut. I bought this from Owen around a year ago. Quality of woodworking on this is genuinely up there with the very best of UK Bass building – and I speak from a position of some experience (my purchasing behaviour is ridiculous). The bass tunes as a standard instrument. It plays incredibly well and is an awful lot of fun. It is also a serious bass and very gigable and recordable. Of course, it’s extremely light, though I don’t have an accurate weight. i’d love to hang on to this but I just find that I gravitate to ordinary short scales almost all of the time. The bass is supplied with three sets of used strings and a brand new set of custom made Newtone strings. There are lots of different gauges to play around with, though the super light 30 to 90 strings that are on it now were a mistake. They don’t intonate very well given the scale length. In conversation with Jaba, he indicated that medium or heavier gauge is better. The bass is active (I don’t know what the circuit is) with bass and treble stacked controls. The pick up is an EMG soap bar. Condition is perfect, apart from on hairline mark on the back – I couldn’t capture this in the photographs. The bass comes with adjustment tools and a Warwick rockbag. I can ship in the UK at the buyer’s cost and risk. I paid £585 for this including the new strings. The price at £515 is firm and not looking for trades thanks (unless you have a villa and land in Portugal with mature olive, fig and pomegranate trees). Apologies for the possibly wonky text and poor photographs here. Contractors in my garden ripped out the broadband on Saturday morning so I’m working on an iPhone. Any questions, please just ask

  5. Up for sale is my Jim Deacon short scale Precision bass. Cool 30” scale P bass that I had intended to mod but I’m so happy with my Guild Starfire I’m not going to bother so may as well move it on. Fitted with DR Sunbeam strings and comes with a Fender short scale gig bag. £120. I’m pretty sure I have a box in the loft so can be posted if necessary.

  6. For sale is this great Octave pedal. It's the best one I've tried but hardly use one now in the projects I'm in. Doesn't have the volume drop of the OC 2. I believe this is the MK1 version as doesn't have the 'Tim' switch that solos the Sub (have to turn dial for that). Has velcro on the back. Price includes P&P to UK. Not looking for any trades. Thanks, Jonathan

  7. Having been stuck at home for many years due to spinal injury and operations I am pleased to be playing bass again. Am venturing out of home for the first time for 1000lights charity event with 999 other musicians at Birmingham arena this Sunday. am looking forward to playing live again and hoping this is the start of good things….. photo is the space at home I have spent too long in (and too much money on) Hope to be more active on this great forum from now on also!

  8. A HX Stomp would potentially replace your entire board as a 'one box' solution but depends if you're happy with the digital style editing that comes with a mutli fx pedal..... and indeed if you like the sounds you can get from the Stomp as it's not cheap. For a straight forward DI to put at the end of your signal chain I can recommend the Radial SB-2 Stagebug; passive, so nothing really to go wrong, with an Eclipse transformer (according to the Radial blurb, the transformer is 'magical'!!). If you want more punch from your bass, check out the review I did recently of the Dod Meatbox reissue. Just using a little of the Octave out (not the sub synth output as this kills speakers!) I found gave a nice push in the low frequencies without sounding artificial.

  10. Hey, I think you missed the joke. And - actually, it is hard. If it isn't hard, why are you here asking the question? The point is, everybody hears differently and everybody has different needs, so when you ask what is the best, you'll get a whole multitude of answers. I offer up my "starter" IEM setup as it will give people a good first experience where I know it will work for most people and give them something to build on. In regard to other options... well... some people will complain inears have too much low end, not enough low end, too much mid range... and of course all this can change. If you are a reggae nut for example, you may want an IEM that naturally puts out a load of low end with no EQing. Other folk may hate that. The reference you missed with regard to cameras... is that the similar question is similarly asked. "Whats the best lens?"... the answer to that, like what IEMs and the user is looking to get out them, is the lens which can be wide enough for landscapes, or short focusing enough for macro, or telephoto enough for peeping tom shots. Such a lens which can do all that and suit everybody's needs just doesn't exist. Not only was I not responding to you directly, I was not being childish as Dave will understand (from his camera hobby) about the lens question - but if you think it's childish, so be it. Anyway, if I never provide any more input into IEMs ever again, I think I've done my bit.

  13. I’m probably going to regret this, but I think it’s time to let this one go. This is the first Sandberg bass I bought. It was my main bass for a good few years and I did at least two tours with The Divine Comedy on it. It’s a TM4 in a gorgeous blackburst finish, and it’s one of the original jazz bass-style shapes from 2006, before they changed to the current design. It has a pau ferro fingerboard with no inlays, Delano pickups and the original preamp. Comes with the original Sandberg gig bag which is looking a bit tatty on the front (🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛) but is still perfectly serviceable. It sounds absolutely glorious and plays like butter. I usually played it in passive mode but the active preamp is excellent. There is a scratch on the back which you can see in the photos and a little tiny dent in the back of the neck which was never an issue. Apart from that it’s in fantastic condition for an 18 year old bass. The one downside is the weight. It’s pretty hefty. My luggage scales bring it somewhere between 4.75-5kg. Unfortunately my back doesn’t agree with me playing long shows with this bass anymore. My number one bass nowadays is a masterpiece aged TM4 that I had built for me a few years ago and that bass essentially usurped this one when it arrived so sadly it isn’t getting played anymore. You can hear/watch this bass in action! We did a very strange gig on French TV back in 2019 where we played the whole of the (then) new album Office Politics in an office. The bass comes though great in the recording… Not looking for any trades thanks. Collection from Peckham SE15 is preferred so you can try it out. Could also meet up somewhere in London if that helps. I don’t fancy posting it I’m afraid. Cheers! Simon

  14. A lovely bass and a fine example of Jon’s craftsmanship, completed February 2023. A chance to pick one up without the insanely long wait times. (This took 14 months; some folks’ builds are up to 3 years now.) It’s in pristine condition, just a bit of “finger dust”. Now you’re probably asking yourself why I’m listing this. I have 3 P basses now and the other two are the same model as each other (one with flats, one with rounds) and 41.3mm nut width. I’m finding it easier to swap between those as the widths are the same. Also, despite my wanting a narrow-nut P bass again, I’ve finally come to appreciate and enjoy the slightly wider string spacing (only taken me 30 years)! The specs are as follows: 34" scale; 20 frets; 38.5mm nut width; 19mm string spacing; 21.5mm neck depth at 1st fret; 23.5mm at 12th; shallow C carve; Mastergrade quarter-sawn, roasted flame maple neck; rosewood fretboard; Rolled fingerboard edges; 9.5" radius board; 2-way truss rod; carbon fibre reinforcement; medium jumbo stainless steel fretwire; bone nut; 2mm cream side dots; 6mm cream face dots; satin finish on the neck; Schaller BM clover leaf tuners chrome; Hipshot triple string tree chrome; traditional P shape; alder; usual contours; reduced heel with recessed fixings (no plate); polyester basecoat; Olympic White; Tort/white/black/white 4-ply pick guard (traditional P shape); ABM 3704c19 bridge; Fralin (stock wound) pickup; volume / tone knobs (domed chrome, with small, discreet dot markers); Schaller strap locks; Shuker embossed Hiscox hardcase. Currently strung with Chromes 50-105 with super-low, buzz-free action. The in-joke decal is just a transfer and so can be easily removed according to Jon. Still has the cellophane on the pick guard. Collection from Sheffield. (For this sale, I’ll only deal with members who have a verifiable history/feedback record on here - no newly signed-up members, thanks.) I could potentially hand deliver to the Bath/Bristol area (only for a completed sale). The only bass trades I’d consider are these: EB Musicman Stingray 4H 2EQ or Classic in natural or honey burst (white and trans teal also considered). Prefer the bridge with mutes, preferably the Flea model; Fender American Professional II Precision; Fender American Standard Precision (2012-2016 ones with the CS60 pickups). As for non-bass trades, I’d be interested in a Minimoog Voyager. Any related questions, please ask.

  16. This is new today! A mandolin from Thomann for £50. I did a bit of research before buying and the consensus seemed to be that if you could: fit decent strings sand the bridge to fit the arch top properly set the action set the intonation then it was a pretty good instrument for the money - and so it has turned out! It has an adjustable bridge so setting the action is straighforward. The reviews were right - the bridge isn't bad quality but on arrival doesn't fit the profile of the arch-top:

  17. Happy to go along with this, it's a sensible trade-off. Pretty much any system for guaranteeing buyer/seller ID can be thwarted with enough effort. This is a small amount of effort with (from the anecdotal experience of the air rifle forum) a reasonable success rate. If BC decided to introduce full financial services Know Your Customer identification processes with passports and proof-of-life photgraphs then that would be more secure, but too inconvenient for most users.

  18. There are a ton of RB 400 amps around. They were legend for being one of the most reliable things made. And they’re getting popular again it seems. My old amp tech has been beating the bushes looking for another version I , with the fixed power cord. He was selling me some tubes recently and I mentioned that it was my old friend and mentor Fish , who turned me on to them so many years ago. He said “I’ve got something to show you” … “Here it is” and there was the original amp Fish had used Frequently they can be had for little money. And unlike some early Class D heads most parts are easily available.

  21. The 400RB-II was advertised here for quite a long time, months in fact. But it was collection only from Edinburgh. After a bit of back and forth, we agreed that I would arrange the courier, and it duly arrived. The 400RB-III has been on Reverb for about 6 months, so I put in some cheeky offers and again, after a bit of offer/counter offer, we agreed a price. The MKIII is superb too, very much a GK 400RB amp in the vein of the earlier one. I can get it to sound almost identical to the MK-II. Astonishingly, I have invested a grand total of £470 for BOTH amps inc. shipping. These represent my best value purchases ever. Rob

  25. Yup, another blast from the past MK is well known for his involvement with the Prince's Trust concerts, with Level 42's members often acting either individually or entirely as a backing band for the various artists. Here is an absolutely wonderful song from the 1989 gala, with MK acting as MC and bassist. The whole song is fabulous, but oh my god the sublime 16th note run at 4:29 gives me goosebumps. Quite reminiscent of Rhythm Stick, just glorious.

  33. Just wondered if anyone remembers a cheap cafe that I used in Tin Pan Alley in 1966. My first job was aged 16 in Foyles Book Shop, Charing Cross Road, starting in the summer of 66, I was living in a bedsit in Hampstead (landlady was sister in law of Tony Garnett, celebrated producer/actor and thoroughly nice guy) most lunchtimes were spent prowling round the area, looking for cheap grub. the cafe I remember with the most affection was, from memory, just a few doors along Denmark St from Charing X Rd junction, in a basement, cuisine was mostly Italian crossed with “meat and 2 veg” lady in charge was a formidable Italian with a foghorn voice, I can still hear her bellowing, “ONE MINESTRA” into the dumb waiter, which brought a bowl of the best minestrone on the planet, I believe her name was Renee. I loved the vibe of the street and the occasional glimpse of famous faces, another memory concerns the strangest E Type Jag, it was two-tone pink and yellow, divided longways like a rhubarb and custard sweet, the pink side had a yellow seat piped in pink, the yellow side had a pink seat piped in yellow, very tasteful. Many years later I learned that the line from Elton John’s “Your Song” “I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss” referred to him and Bernie Taupin working in a publishers over one of the shops, this being around the time of my lunchtime prowls. Several of the bookshops in Charing X Rd at this time had cinema clubs showing Indie films from UK, US and Europe, often with poetry readings and folk singers, not far down from Foyles just off the main drag was Bunjies Folk Cellar (from memory, in 66, it was known as, “Bunjies Coffee House” but that might be influenced by the fog of the years 😂) In the days of no Internet, the wall on the stairs down to Bunjies cellar was covered with notes, posters, stickers advertising gigs, selling kit and with messages like, “Can anyone drop off a guitar in Hamburg?” So glad that I saw that scene, at that time.

  34. These are superb basses. I've played this one of Paddy's and I set it up and I was hugely impressed with it. I also played a white NJS5 belonging to another basschatter, waynesworld, who lives close by. I actually agreed to buy Wayne's bass before this one of Paddy's went up for sale but I would have bought either. I used mine at band practice this evening and one of the things that really stood out for me was how even the output is across all five strings. My Lakland 55-02 and Sterling Ray35 have been a bit guilty of the D and G getting buried a bit in a live mix but the Cort was fantastic in this respect with every note being clearly heard. Paddy's a great seller too. Buy with total confidence.

  36. The classic vibe mustang. Short scale of course and just a fantastic instrument for the price. Really great way to test the waters with short scales (wasn't for me). Bought second hand but only a couple of years old, and only taken out of the house a few times so in top condition. Specs easily found online, currently strung with Labella flats, which really give it a great vibe (pardon the pun). Also comes with appropriately sized fender gig bag! Postage possible, or collection from Leicester Cheers, Jack

  38. Well the great swap-out continues. Been on a major Jazz kick since the start of the year. I started off with a Jazz, 25 odd years ago and moved on to Precisions within a year or two.. Aside from the odd Ray or Tbird here and there, it's been mostly P Bass all the way. I did have a lovely 2011 US Standard Jazz with a maple fretboard and absolutely loved the look and feel of it, but there was a big gap where a rosewood board Jazz should have been. I've always preferred rosewood boards on Jazz basses. Not sure why. Look? Sound? maybe both? Earlier this year I picked up a QMT Deluxe Jazz in Amber and a 60th Anniversary RW Jazz in Firemist Silver. Both those instruments are absolutely stellar and they just made me hungry for more. So out went the lovely sunburst and maple Jazz and in came... A beautiful 2020 American Pro II in Mercury. God I love thing!!! The neck is incredible!!! And the finish is glorious. Needs a set of new strings, a setup and I'll probably stick a Hipshot Xtender on it, but yeah, I think this is going to be Numero Uno for a few live projects for a while...

  40. I've got one. It's compact but not really tiny - maybe he's a big lad in the pic! Replaced the (very) bendy original bridge on mine with a less bendy 80s MIJ 3-point, but otherwise it's stock. That's a DiMarzio Model P on mine - but some (probably later ones) had generic MIJ pickups. Gotoh tuners (doubt any had Schallers from new) & weighs 8.8lbs/4kg, but maybe slightly less without all the dust. Would definitely trade up to a Track IV - always fancied a 2xP but (somehow) never had one. Yet!

  43. Yes, Chris and I had this conversation. It’s based around the Czech Ease bass I own. I bought it as a lightweight and easy to carry bass for gigs when the metal one was too heavy. Now the metal one has been replaced with a wood one, I now longer need two. Solves a problem I don’t have. So that’ll be up for the cull after my holiday as it’s currently used as a cat bed.

  46. HSL's good old M32 once again doing a sterling job at Bloodstock. Like most by now, I'm a little bored with the interface and graphics but I can't fault them at all really - they sound great, have more than enough toys to do 95% of jobs and are nearly as reliable as a Yamaha. I also had the pleasure of talking to the lovely PR ladies from Midas which was super - I even got some T-Shirts and a hoodie! 🥰 The ML recieved a bit of love recently, too - I removed the meterbridge and had Kev (K. Edwards Electronics) replace all the bulbs with LEDs. It looks like new! Honestly, I've even convinced myself it sounds better now. 😅 And the classic 02R here working on a live recording from home. The recording in question is a band I work with frequently - Captain Stingray who play afro / dub / world / reggae originals. There's now 9 in the band so quite a channel count and it also marked the first recording to be taken from the M32 at The Rigger. ❤️ I've got NHC coming up again plus some more Kirk Brandon dates in September. I'll lay good money on the statement that not one of the shows will be using an 02R (or even a DM) but hopefully I'll see and use plenty of fun stuff along the way. 👍
