Peavey T-40 Bass, made in the USA in 1979 built like a tank, but definitely not as heavy as one, as id been lead to believe, more Fender Jazz weight wise. Features a whole plethora of tone options thanks to the 2 pickups, phase in out switch and individually tone and volume controls. A few minor love bites here and there, nothing major, frets are fine as is the truss rod, in great condition for a 45 year old bass. Comes with a hardcase. Can post for an additional £158 points

Well, @skelf pulled it out of the bag and got me my new Custom Recurve before I have to go back to Mexico and even before my *redacted* birthday tomorrow. But it's clearly not a rush job. Arrived about half an hour ago and it's all I could have wished for! Gorgeous, crafted to the highest standards and after just 10 minutes noodling it already feels completely like home. The neck is absurdly playable, as anyone who has played an ACG will know. There's just something about them that feels intuitive and right and fast and confidence inspiring. And this one also happens to look incredible. Recurve 4, 33 inch scale, East pre and combination of PB and RFB pickups. Hybrid Turkish Walnut top, birch accent, alder body, mac ebony board, maple and wenge neck. Looking forward to getting it home and playing around with the sounds with my usual setup and not a shitty 15w practice amp that distorts if you even breathe on it.8 points

Yep, I decided 2 years back that I needed to find something new, and answered an ad for an originals band. Met up with them, jammed and they loved my playing (I guess someone has to haha!), and I agreed to join. Within about 24 hours I realised I’d made a mistake, as the messages on the group chat went a bit weird. I gracefully bowed out as quickly as I could and then found myself being given the opportunity to join up with Katy Hurt and band instead, so it worked out great. I’m now with a group of people I really like, and get to watch/listen as Katy wows crowds with her voice and songs.7 points

Bought this on here a couple of months back and it`s a great example of a P bass but an expensive incoming bass means I`ve gotta shift some stuff. This is a 2013 Mexican model in honey blonde. It has the vintage specs, 44 mm nut width, all gloss neck, vintage style pickup, vintage reverse open gear tuners and a gold ionized aluminium scratch plate which as you can see isn`t fitted as I like the contrast with the black better. The original will be supplied. The bridge was changed out sometime in the past and I don`t have the original BBOT. It has a few dings: one on the rear, a few on the body edge and one on the back of the neck. The bass weighs 9.4 LB`s. It will come in a brand new basic Thomman gig bag and the price includes shipping to a UK address, if you can collect from Paisley I will knock off the postage costs. I bought the bass for my asking price and most of these seem to start up higher in price but usually end up going for around £500.6 points

Probably the most beautiful bass I've ever owned and yet she needs to go as funds demand. Read up on this instrument. It is so well specced and plays beautifully. Zero fret, custome Elrick electronics, so well balanced that switching from passive to active gives absolutely no volume change. Having said that the active eq is so good you will want to stay active! Basically a factory produced edition of an hand made Rob Elrick bass, using identical electronics and pickups. White might not seem the most inspiring colour but with the maple neck and white pearloid inlays it is gorgeous. The instrument is virtually unmarked (ie I haven't spotted any) Called the New Jazz Standard for a reason. It's a Jazz at heart but improved in all areas. Complete with custom gig bag and original shipping box. I'm open to reasonable offers - and dependent on where you are based I'd be happy to offer personal delivery. Happy to discuss delivery, collection or courier (least attractive option!) Message for more details.5 points

I'm a massive fanboy obviously and have owned over the years: 2 GWB35s, GWB1 (twice), 3 different EHBs (6, 5 and shortscale 5), a heavily modded TMB35 (which I still have). Aside from the GWB which is fretless, never had a Prestige/Japanese fretted and always wanted one. I recently had a bit of a purge to get 2 basses I have wanted since I first saw them. Finally got an Ibanez Grooveline G105 I found being sold in Eire after repeated googling over the months/years. Even with family in Northern Ireland there was no way I could get it. After a few talks the owned agreed to have his son bring over to England so I could pick it up. An immaculate bass even with all the original case goodies and labels. Now I've set it up really low as I like I can tell it will get a lot of playing time. Which is saying something when you think what NBD 2 of 2 is... I know the look isn't for everyone but has best balance of any bass I've ever played and has a great super jazz bass sound. I really want a G106 but after a few messages from Benjamin Shepherd who informed me only 50 were made I'm not holding my hopes up. That said I'm extremely happy with the G105. Anyone else got one?5 points

A new shop recently opened across the harbour in Dartmouth. Checked out their site and saw a new Elf. Now I’ve been reading great reviews on these things for years. None of the other local stores ever stocked them. One turned up on kijiji maybe five years ago and instantly sold. I kinda kicked myself for missing that. So I was thinking about that Elf. And looking at stuff I haven’t been using, and decided that a trade might work. I picked up a SWR HeadLite a couple of years ago , and used it for a little while as a practice amp with an Ampeg 210AV. The amp is in perfect condition , none of the pots are scratchy , everything works perfectly. And I had picked it up for a song. So the dealer made a great trade , and I got a brand new Elf for roughly what I had planned to sell the HeadLite for. Without the hassle. I think we’re both quite happy. First trying it quietly out at home with a Bareafaced One10. Then in my practice nook at the in-laws with the C2. The fan is noisy , I can live with that , the HeadLite has a noisy fan too.5 points

Still a rebuild in progress again. The Darkglass is linked in, but not used. So with what I’m doing now, the board is all about enhancement, rather that any specific effects. Sorry the picture is on the wonk- can’t seem to get it turned around5 points

Turns out my next rehearsal with the Hulla band will be a kind of gig, too. We usually rehearse in a village hall (half the band are on the committee and a portion of our annual profit goes to help run the hall). But this Sunday there's an art exhibition there. So we've been offered the use of the local lifeboat station (!) The BL is one of the helmsmen and the Saxophonist is the station manager and, as a band that plays solely to raise money for charity, about a third of our annual take goes to the RNLI. The station is about 200 yards from the hall and they have promised to remove the boat to make room and, of course, in case there's a shout. As the station is close to the beach, we'll pick up an audience and I expect we'll have the RNLI collecting buckets out. Band on the Beach!😀4 points

I eventually decided on a Guild Newark Street Starfire 1, having discounted the Epi Rumblekat (because of the nut width). I am sure the Rumblekat is an excellent bass but I am really happy with the Starfire. The Precision type pickup may not seem the obvious choice for a bass of this type but it does give a bit more tonal variation than the more typical mudbucker. I am finding it is a Swiss Army Knife bass for the covers bands I play in. You can get that 60s Brit Invasion style tone, as well as a Precision with depth. I am not sure that the parallel setting adds much but I might find a use for it. I love the neck but then I’m a Jazz bass fan boy. I also think it looks the business and is well made. In common with most large semis, there are a few drawbacks: strap button on the heel of the neck. Not so much neck dive as wanting to hang horizontal to the floor (possibly because of the strap button location). The binding on the top edge starts to dig into the forearm on a long gig. I have cured this with some foam edge protector. It might look a bit strange but it works.4 points

Bit of an issue with iteration #17365019 Recently got the Jam Dyna-ssor, and I LOVE what it does to my clean tone, but hate what it does going into my fuzz, octabvre and ultrawave. Kicked the ultrawave off the board and moved the dyna-ssor to the end of my chain (which made the Broken sound HUGE) but it still makes my octabvre sound muddy. At the moment I'm stomping one off as I stomp the other on, but hate doing that. Any suggestions???4 points

First gig with the latest incarnation of the board that tries to solve the problem of having a bass and EUB with two very different outputs levels and not having to unplug/plug in mid gig. Got choice of either using the variable pad on the bigshot or the boost on the subway (I used the latter). Worked well though I could do with tidying up the in/out cabling routes. There's an MXR mini iso brick underneath providing the power.4 points

Has anyone had a chance to try one of the new Sterling Ray shortscales with roasted neck yet? If so are they worth the upcharge? I’ve sort of given up hope of snagging a used EBMM shortscale (after my last attempt fell through) so wondering if this would be a decent compromise.4 points

£2950 - Will consider lower value trades plus cash. Very reluctantly, my Status Stealth 4 string is up for sale. All graphite body and neck - this really is peak Status. If you catch it in the light, you can see the amber woven in and it looks incredible. Born in the mid-late 90s, it's in excellent condition and has been a case queen for most of its life. I've gigged it once and it was fantastic - everything I ever wanted it to be. Of course it can do the whole slap thing, but it's much more than that; much deeper and more soulful, and so consistent. I don't think it's ever needed tuning in my ownership and the neck profile is something special. There are some small surface scratches on the body but honestly it looks 2 years old, not 25 or so. It's still got the plastic wrapping on the back of the rear compartment! 2 band EQ, Hyperactive pickups, 18v preamp and set up to perfection. Comes with the branded Status case, the original case candy (including Allen keys) and even the original registration documentation for the warranty. It also comes with a thick, chunky genuine Status strap which supports it beautifully and was almost harder to find than the bass itself. Bought from BassBros and apparently was owned at one time by VMan from Slipknot, though I can't prove this and to be honest, I think most Status' have slipped through his ownership at some point! When in BassBros, I tried a couple of Alembics and a Wal on the same day, and this played 10x better. It felt like it had come from the future. In terms of trades, I'd love MusicMan Stingray 5 (single humbucker) plus cash my way. Try me for other trades - a cheaper bass plus cash could be considered. Cash offers considered as well. The proceeds from this are going towards a house deposit. In a few years, I'll hopefully buy another proper all graphite Status, but with the way prices are skyrocketing, who knows how much they'll cost by then. Based just North of Cardiff, South Wales. Not looking to ship unless it's arranged by the buyer - same goes for overseas shipping. Happy to work with you on that. Happy to meet up or welcome to try it here. Any questions, please don't hesitate. Sam3 points

Here is an exceptional JV serial numbered bass from Japan. Absolutely incredible tone and playability. Aged satin white with matching white neck and headstock. You don't just have to get your Duff on with this, you can get fat funk slap tones or wind off the bridge pick up and get that classic P bass sound. The pick ups are massive sounding. A really versatile vintage bass with a very slinky fast jazz bass nut width neck. Comes with an outrageously cool period white pleather gig bag with orange lining. Got this from the wonderful bassbros but need to move it on to fund other things. Here's their original listing with more professional photos https://reverb.com/.../71372003-squier-jv-contemporary-pj... Located in Worcester but happy to travel a little within reason. Happy to ship but absolutely at your risk and cost. Cash is king ideally but could possibly trade if you have something cool or an Ampeg or Markbass 8x10.3 points

***Put some cobalt flats on it, gave it really good set-up and it’s a whole new bass. Keeping it!*** Bought this as I was completely smitten by the colour, fully with the intention of selling my white ultra jazz, but for no reason I can particularly put my finger on, I find myself going for the white one a bit more. I love the necks on these. Super comfy. Tonal range is superb, with the core, both pick-ups, everything flat sound just being a really tight, sits well in any mix kinda thing. Comes with the case, all the gubbins etc. and aside from one small ding in the pics, is in really great condition. I've swapped the straplocks for traditional buttons as the keen eyed will see in the pics, but will put the strap lock buttons back on before letting it go. Weighs in at 9lb 7oz. I have boxes to ship it in but would prefer to meet up for a face to face deal if possible. I'm in Chepstow. Have put a £1600 price tag, but might be some wiggle room for a cash sale. Definitely up for trades and part-ex, particularly a maple-necked ultra jazz or any ultra precision. I like Fender shaped objects very much, but not adverse to giving a potentially nice Warwick/Spector a shot if there's some cash coming my way in the deal. Lakland 44-02/55-02 DJ4 (red one????) maybe? Yamaha BB P34/35 2024x or even 1024x. Have yet to have a lasting relationship with a Stingray (mainly the weight I think), but open to the idea. Open to anything not too obscure or boutiquey (is that a word?) Fender's Spec says... Fender’s American Ultra series is arguably the most advanced range that the legendary company has ever produced. Entirely in line with The Law Of Unintended Consequences I too bought a Trace Elf some years ago intending to keep it in my gigbag as an emergencies-only fall-back rig. This was after seeing one of the early ones being used by @Mike Brooks at The North Star in Ealing with @Silvia Bluejay. Unbelievably, it very rapidly displaced several £000s of high-end amplification and became my first choice head at every gig with both my main bands ... just as much for DB gigs as for those using a Rickenbacker 4003s5. Who knew? Modern amplification is so unbelievably powerful and useable that those 750W / 900W / 2000W heads we all lust over are simply a load of willy-waggling. Any gig big/loud enough to need that sort of amplification and you'll have full PA support and a sound engineering team to take care of it. For me, the Elf has never once skipped a beat in the last eight years (that's >400 gigs, even with Covid slap in the middle), it weighs next to nothing, and it's built like a tank. Game Over. I have just ordered my 3rd and 4th pack of Newtone Platinum Rounds. Not quite as zingy as the Diamonds but with reduced finger noise. The great thing is that Neil at Newtone will advise you on what string to order if you tell him whet you want. Considering they are hand wound in the UK, they are a bargain. I tried Elite Detroit Flats last time and they were OK but I went straight back to an old set of Newtones.3 points

...this Lakland Skyline 55-02 Deluxe came along for an excellent price. It's NOS, bought new from the shop but it's from 2018. So no roasted maple, but that's fine. It has old D'Addario strings on it and it needs a clean because it's an ex-demo bass (I think), but I really like the feel.3 points

my God, I am preparing so hard for this. I'm up at 5.30am today, and I think I've nailed the first verse lyrics I have 2 songs to learn and routines too. I know the songs but some of the words, the way they meter and fit together. Very well written songs. There's no room for the words on an ipad here. They must be learnt well. Still quite bruised from the fillers😅3 points

Photos of the gig on Sunday have been posted. I don't think I've posted any photos of me playing here in the 20 odd years I've been a member. However, this deserves a special mention. So there I was, busy playing a G. When two dogs started fighting outside. One got off his lead and the lady had to run after it down the middle of the road. And the other one was getting a roasting from its owner. Never a dull gig.3 points

I run DB -> Trace Elf -> Crazy 8 cab on an old speaker stand at ear height AND Trace Elf -> DI Out to FOH The Crazy 8 is tiny (clue's in the name) and for my purposes any decent PA top would do just as well. I roll off some bass on the amp to avoid overloading the cab and I can hear myself clearly pretty much regardless of volume levels either on stage or in the venue. The combination of Gain & Volume controls on the Trace Elf give me all the control I need on stage, everything else lies with @Silvia Bluejay out front. Having the tiny cab (with effectively an HPF) four foot off the ground means that I never get feedback issues. I routinely play with four different DBs according to what's needed for the gig, and this system works equally well with all of them. Here it is in action a week ago:2 points

I'm downsizing due to infrequent gigging so grab a bargain! This sale is for a great condition EBS HD350 bass amplifier and a very tidy EBS Pro 410 cab 4 ohms 800w to which has been added a set of decent locking casters. Please note, the sale is for the amp, cab, serviceable cover for the cab, speaker lead and kettle lead for the amp, only.2 points

Cheers Rich, I’d like to try one before buying but that’s not looking likely. Thing is I’ve been spoiled over the years with EBMMs and I’m concerned I’ll find the SBMM a bit ‘cheap’. Currently using a couple of Sandberg Lionel’s so hoping the quality isn’t too far off that.2 points

Got this out for a play and decided to keep it. It’s a finger funk fiend. Lovely Tony Levin 5’er. £225 collected £250 posted It came with 3 band Audere preamp fitted, but I didn’t get on with that, so fitted a 3 band Nordstrand which, lovely though it was, didn’t float my lightbulbs. Finally bought a 2 band Retrovibe Stinger directly from David, I paid him to fit it for me as he’s only down the road, he did a top job of course and the Stinger gave me the sound that was in my head. It has the side jack still in place if you fancy returning it to a 3 band pre. I wasn’t keen on the original mother of pearl look scratchplate, so I removed it (binned it too I think). Unfortunately replacement scratchplates are as rare as a guitarist turning down a solo, so @TimAl made me a new one through his Gig.Ink service. I preferred the plain black against the 70’s Orange. Anyway, the Stinger makes this a wonderful beast of a 70’s Ray. I did buy a SD MM pickup, but the string spacing is narrower on these, so I stuck with the original (which is great, now the Stinger is in). Lovely condition, I’ve taken it out the house on 3 occasions since buying off @vmaxblues and played it once at a recording session that wanted some disco and “slap”. I will do anything for money, even that…engineer nearly soiled himself when I slightly boosted the low end. It has Schaller type strap locks and I’ll include a new leather strap with matching locks. Comes with a choice of cases, a stiff gig bag type case that is in great nick and loads of pockets, or a hard case that is as basic as can be and is a little tired around the edges but does a sterling job. I’m currently recovering from surgery and won’t be driving for a week or two, but am able to hand over in person if you visit Slapper towers. £225 seems a decent price for a nice 5’er. Might be up for a trade for an acoustic guitar (Steel or Nylon string) or old MacBook I can run Logic on. When I’m back on my feet and driving I’ll be happy to meet up, or arrange postage for an additional £25, but again once I’m able to get some packing materials and box. cheers John2 points

There are lots of different approaches to this. If you find one that seems to be working, stick with it until you have complete confidence in your knowledge of the fretboard. It will take a lot of repetition... Here's one that has reputation behind it: https://www.studybass.com/lessons/fretboard-notes/memorizing-fretboard-note-names/2 points

Would like to know about these too. I keep looking at the Toluca blue version with rosewood board to use as a backup for taking out to places I wouldn't take my USA EBMM. My main issue with the earlier Sterling version I tried a couple of years ago was the horrible cheap spongy quality in the movement of the knobs they'd put on there, but it occurred to me that as my USA version has a John East pre-amp installed, I might be able to fit all the original passive electronics into a Sterling instead, upgrade that aspect of it to USA standard and solve the problem. [edit] - I also remember, at least on the one I tried, a hard sharp corner from the neck onto the fretboard. No attempt to curve or roll the corner or anything. Maybe I just tried a dud? If they're making the effort to do roasted maple now, hopefully these new editions have a bit more attention paid to that area too.2 points

Good post. I imagine a woman in @police squad's situation might feel slightly more pressured than a man into trying to improve her appearance. However, note my use of "feel" - it would, I think, be mostly in her mind. Most women of my generation (and PS's) have been raised - by society if not necessarily by their family - with the idea that you should always try to look your best in order to progress your career or generally be taken more seriously in anything you do. The entertainment business is the same, only more so! So we would already be making a huge effort in a case like this. If you want the gig badly enough, I don't think there's anything wrong at all in using "tweakments" (technical term, people! Look it up...). As someone suggests in a previous post, musicians have stage clothes and accessories, choose the right bass/guitar/drumkit for the look, etc. and improving your appearance (in the gym, at the stylist's, at the cosmetic clinic) falls under that same category. However, as that previous post adds, it's keeping up the appearance that may trap you in. Will you have to do botox and dye your hair from now on in order to stay in the band? What happens if you don't? Would it be like meeting someone on a dating app and discovering they put a 20-year-old photo of themselves on their profile? Will the band have fallen in love with you in the meantime and accept you as you are?2 points
