How was my gig? Bloody marvellous thank you. Last night our little southern rock tribute played main stage at Stormin the Castle bike rally in Witton-le-Wear County Durham. This annual bike rally is probably one of the largest, and features two live music tents, both equipped with professional sound and light. We were second up on the main stage and technically supporting Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons (Phil Campbell of Motörhead fame). The PA was a massive RCF Line Array and both the FOH and monitor desks were Digico (for any fellow PA gear sluts). I decided that as we had a pro engineer mixing monitors that I would use my IEM’s and I am so pleased I did. I could wander around the rather large stage without suffering any loss of sound quality and also I’m not suffering the post-gig tinnitus this morning despite it being rather loud. Highlight of the gig, well there were many. The tent was full of enthusiastic bikers from the off and stayed full to the end with lots of dancers and singing along. We played rather well even if I say so myself, but the ultimate highlight was when the FOH engineer came up to me after the gig and said he loved working with us and that we were the highlight of the weekend for him😎 There were a number of pro photographers snapping away in the pit so I’ll update this post later with some better action shots but for now here’s a quick shot from the pit as we arrived on site.17 points

It was blummin great - Played Middleton Arena supporting The Chameleons. half seated (full) and half standing (filled up as we played) so probably 200-250 people watching (think 550 tickets sold). Tried some new tunes. Hired bass rig was a fender rumble 500 combo - very decent little amp - would’ve preferred my own rig, but it was a shared bill and a second kit was on stage floor in front of the riser for the chameleons drummer. Took the Casady and the ripper - but stuck with the ripper to cover all ground. Just “home” as far as my basses are concerned. some good feedback too…16 points

Also played at St Mary’s Chambers on Friday in Rossendale. Decent enough - rougher than I’d have liked as we’ve been away on holiday for 2 weeks and the guys haven’t rehearsed (fair enough 🤷🏻♂️) photos by our very own @Dankology13 points

Played at a pub in Scarborough last night with The Alligators. The Tap and Spile is an old pub with two rooms, neither that large but probably around 30 or 40 punters in each. Set up at the end of the lounge with our small PA which was more than adequate. Unusually 3 sets is what they wanted so we obliged, playing around 30 to 40 mins per set. Used my passive P-Lyte into the wonderful Rumble 500 which is my ‘go to’ set up with this band. I’m still new to the band so a few missed turnarounds etc but definitely getting better each gig. We’ve even talked of organising my first rehearsal soon! Finished around 11.30, 50 mile drive on deserted country roads so home around 1pm.13 points

A nice gig at the seaside yesterday, Withernsea to be exact. Very friendly pub/club with very enthusiastic audience. Struggled to get away….it was a late night, especially with the infamous overnight motorway closures. Third gig with the new drummer and he’s definitely settled in well. Sorry about the video quality - the stage was very compact and bijou so I’m hidden behind the tops. Can hear my backing vox though - heard but not seen. https://fb.watch/ukgfKVyQDx/12 points

Friday night my covers band, Top Deck, hosted a charity night at The Three Horseshoes in Ripley, Derbyshire. It was for Derbyshire Autism Services a not-for-profit organisation supporting families with autistic members. It’s mostly run and staffed by volunteers who are generally parents of autistic children. We supplied all the PA, back line and lights. To provide a full evening of entertainment we got another local cover band, Paradox, to do a set at 8.15. Acoustic duo Rue Marillo did one at 9.15 and we did 10.15 onwards. We donated the band fee and with raffle and other cash given we’re touching £750 raised on the night. All good fun, even the bouncers were dancing by the end. Apparently, the landlord of another pub in the market place was heard grumbling that he could have provided a bigger playing area and crowd and why didn’t we play there? Well, if he’d responded to any of our messages when we were searching for a venue we might have done. 😂12 points

After a couple of gigs with a dep drummer that were just OK, we were back to full strength for a gig at a local football supporters club, a mere 20 minute drive for me; woo hoo! Ah, didn't sell enough tickets - cancelled. No matter, a pub just a bit further down the road asked if we were available as they'd had a cancellation - excellent! Oh, not so much, by the time we'd said we could do it (and we replied very quickly) they'd already filled the slot . However, all was not lost, a band had double booked themselves for a 60th birthday party at The British Legion in Carnoustie (it appears the guy has a reputation for this) and we were suggested as a replacement. Top gig, nice stage, great sound, lovely punters, who were dancing from the get go and no one commented on the volume (we're not loud, at all), but plenty of compliments. More like that one please. Only downside was that the load in was down a long alley, without vehicular access and my Octave pedal switch decided to be flaky (seems fine now). My JMJ Mustang was the weapon of choice throughout and sounded great, the P didn't even come out of its gig bag. Next Saturday - Stirling Corn Exchange and what looks like another inconvenient load in.12 points

Not quite on @JPJ's epic scale but: Social Club on Dorset's Coast, Mudeford just east of Bournemouth. Our second gig there after a two year break, we went down well the first gig but the old Ents Sec wanted a "refresh". New committee comes in and we areback and boy did we rock the joint. Rig was my usual, Marcus Miller M2 Bass, Bugera Veyron 1001M Amp, LFSys Monza Cab, Zoom B2-Four. Fp vocals I use a Sontronics Solo through a TC Helicon Mic Mechanic 2*. You can see the heavy curtains I mentioned above in the background. *MIc Mechanic has reverb, echo, a bit of built in voice EQ processing, bit of this a bit of that and up to 0.5 semitone pitch correction if needed. Of course my voice does not really need it..... The PA is the singers. I disown it completely.11 points

Back on BassChat after many years of inactivity… & many pedalboard changes. Here’s my current board, nothing crazy, but I like to think all nice toys that are useful!11 points

Just back from an amazing evening gig at the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells, my last as stand in for a local funk/soul band. Brilliant atmosphere/audience and we were pretty much ‘bang on it’ playing wise.job well done I think as everyone was very complimentary about my performance tonight and the two I done with them last week, it makes you feel good doesn’t it 😊.lovely bunch of people and players too. Last night I was up in Nottingham at Billy Bootleggers for an all dayer festival with my rocky 3 piece. I felt a bit uncomfortable at first as I was never much of a heavy metal guy. I got chatting to some young police officer outside because she thought the cool 50s American car outside might be mine. I said it wasn’t and neglected to offer a look at my Peugeot 107 which was just around the corner. I decided after the shambolic sound of the last show I would channel my inner Johnny Thunders / Lords of the New Church and just go for it! Best gig I think the band has done - loud, sweaty and I felt we meant it. I have one more show with them this year and will be free to focus on my goth duo for this year 🎉🖤10 points

Great gig at a local pub last night (The Monument, Hereford), it's really feeling great with the new band members! Loads of new songs in the set tonight, which was a bit nerve wracking at times, but we did well, the punters and ourselves thoroughly enjoyed it! 🥳👌 Bit of video here: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/pb6bQLYfHM8vyfpp/10 points

Played the BrewBeat festival in Leicester city centre on Saturday afternoon. V interesting band on the bill before us called NFQ - sort of mix of jazz and breakbeats etc with some tasty upright and fretless bass playing too. We (the Andy Wales Band) were on mid afternoon - decent sized crowd, lots of people saying nice things afterwards. I took my Ashdown ABM, my two Markbass 2x10 cabs and my Yamaha BB604. Had it properly cranked too and it sounded good. Managed to dodge the rain too. ps I nicked the pic below off social media - no idea who originally took it but it’s a good shot!9 points

As I said in the other thread, if you didn't see them in a little club back in 93 or 94 you've really missed your chance. IMO you'd be better off spending the money you'll need to fork out for Oasis tickets on going to see one new band a month at a local venue where you'll be able to pay on the door and, if you like what you hear, buy a T-shirt from them afterwards. You never know one of those gigs might include someone who goes on to be a massive household name, and then you can claim to have seen them when they were still good and you could talk to them afterwards.8 points

Just picked this up secondhand for £350. So excited about it I didn't even wait to get home before I took the photos. Not sure about it's age or origin but it's a whole lot of fun and I've been itching for one for ages. Looking forward to rehearsal on Wednesday to see how it sits with the band.7 points

Just got in from the second gig in a week with the prog/math-rockish band. Another jamboree bag of various acts at a bar in Farringdon. Dismal onstage sound, but we soldiered on...not the first time, not the last etc. I was pleased with my singing and playing, so overall not too bad.7 points

First time at a pub in Chippenham last night. Bandeoke band supporting the usual suspects (tone deaf karaoke kings, drunken shouters, nervous silent types and over enthusiastic hen parties). It went well, no one hit me and I got paid. Happy days.7 points

When that happened to us (incidentally it was also a football social club) there was also zero audience save for the bar staff. The difference was that at half time, they told us we could stop and paid us in full, which was decent of them, both in the financial sense and from the not flogging a dead horse sense.6 points

So I finally did it. I played a whole gig on IEM’s. Yes it was at a bike rally with a massive PA system and professional engineers both at FOH and monitor desks, but I did it. And what a revelation it was too. Bloody loved it. I used a combination of the X-Vive wireless and Sennheiser IEM100’s. The X-Vive transmitter was stage left at the monitor desk and I was about 10 metres away stage right. Our singer guitarist uses the same setup and I would get an occasional crackling if his receiver was between mine and the transmitters or if I turned to face the transmitters (the receiver was hanging off my back pocket). Other than this, call me a convert. The X-Vive played nicely with my Shure wireless too. Now our second guitarist is talking about going in-ears too so that will be the whole band using them.6 points

We are our own worst critics. I'm all for self improvement, but not self flagellation. Live performance will always have wee fluffs, they are but fleeting moments in time. Save the "perfection" for the recording studio, I say.6 points

Nice message in from the dep last week "Hi Al, thanks again for depping. Listening back you put a spark back in to the band. My playing was a bit shonky at times but the fun was back and it was relaxed. Here's a link to the recording. I hope you bass sounds a bit better on this one Chris" The final sentence was a reference to my bemoaning my playing on a previous dep a month or so back. The recording was stems straight off the Soundcraft stage box. I can still hear the odd flub, but they'd have been gone in the moment so I doubt anyone in the club picked up on them and I notice only because I am listening back. Bass sounds good though possibly needed a bit more bottom but it sits well - Status S2 -> Boss TU3 -> Boss CE20 -> Trondheim Audio SkarBassOne -> sfx Microthumpinator -> TwoNotes Bass Revolt (green channel)6 points

Odd one last night at the Balaclava in Fraserburgh. Weird ebb and flow to the crowd, not busy, busy, not busy, busy then really unbusy at the end. Tales of fights outside the bar involving 6 folk and pint glasses being thrown around. Thankfully if true, it stayed outside. On the whole, pleased with the night though - 5 new (to us) songs thrown into the set and they all were played with minimal oopsies and went down pretty well ("Don't Believe a Word" was especially appreciated by a rabid Thin Lizzy fan). I got up to some wireless shenanigans, wandering off into the crowd during Highway to Hell and high fiving folk during the quiet (for me) bits. Some sound issues (chiefly singist mic feedback) but we managed to get on top of it. Good to be back in the saddle after 5ish weeks off for holidays etc. Gear was the Reverend Triad then the Epiphone Les Paul (not so) Standard into the usual Markbass tone cubes (Mini CMD 121P IV + NY121)6 points

Yep you need to match the band to the venue. We did a Hogmanay gig and a similar thing was heard by singer in the loo about hoping this lot aren't one of those loud rock bands with screaming guitars all night. Luckily most people that bought tickets checked to see who the band were and came dressed in Glam gear as the venue didn't say what kind of band we were on their adverts altho looking at us in Glam gear is a bit of a dead giveaway. Cash £1150, trade £1400. Find a cheaper cash one! I only use my Ultra Jazz & Okamoto Precision now. This bass is fully PASSIVE, with Ki0Gon loom, dual concentric "stack knobs" & series/parallel switch. It has truss rod wheel, sculpted neck heel, string through body or top load, compound radius fretboard of 9.5" to 14", compound radius neck profile, from C to D. Original case & "candy" included, as is the original pre amp. 9lb 5oz TRADES. I would only be interested in a straight trade for an Elite or Ultra Precision. COURIER. Mainland UK cost price insured is £103.40 so it makes sense to actually meet up. Collection from Darlington preferred. It will be cleaned before sale. Feedback available, cheers, Karl.4 points

How was your PA last night JPJ? Well it was pretty bloody awesome thank you. Massive RCF line array setup with a wall of bass bins the width of the stage, centre fills sitting on the stage, Digico desks at FOH and monitors, and the best bit, a professional crew to run the bloody thing. Massive sounding rig and a couple of engineers who really knew what they were doing, Shout out to ‘Dave’ on monitors for accommodating our request to not use his rather beautiful Martin monitors and to use our in-ears instead.4 points

Thanks Dave! 😊 That's the bass I built from scratch last year, definitely my number one! 😊👌4 points

Fender Flea Artist Series Roadworn Signature Jazz Bass, faded shell pink, comes with chrome covers (not fitted) and a basic gig bag. Factory roadworn in great condition. The bass was made by Mile Lull himself in 2007. Seymour Duncan pickups and Bartolini 18V NTMB preamp. The scale is 35. Weight is 3,6 kg. The bass is in great condition, with the original soft case. Case is not in such great condition. The bass plays perfectly. Rich modern sound, active/passive switch, etc. EUR 3000 I'll ship anywhere at buyers risk and expense. I may consider a trade for Vintage/CS Fender Jazz of 5 string Sadowsky3 points

So I was after a USA Ray (and probably still am) but I picked this up from Gafbass02 (top man by the way) I added a tort guard, what a bass! Sounds and plays lovely (38mm at the nut), now I’ve had American stingrays before and this ain’t far away, along with the Chinese CV P bass (pictured) which also plays great, these Indonesian & Chinese basses have come such a long way, build quality is excellent3 points

On a different note, we have been playing Rock’n’Roll Star for quite a while. Usually goes down fairly well. If proof were required that Oasis fever has gripped the country, look no further than our gig last night. RnRStar produced an off the scale reaction. Bouncing off the walls they were. Odd but not entirely unexpected. Followed it up with Don’t Look Back in Anger. Job done - re-bookings aplenty. Really must learn a few more. Cigarettes and Alcohol next I think. Yeah, I know, but give ‘em what they want I say 😎3 points

Last night we played a club where the stage had a window at the back. Owing to noise complaints from the residents, a pair of very thick, fully lined curtains covered the back of the stage. Fo the first time ever, I did not hear a hint of feedback all night, even at set up.3 points
