  1. Not a gig last night but a sort of audition to see if i fancied joining an 80's rock band. Singers and guitarist know me from the Glam band so they're aware of how i play and sound. Went well. Only had 4 days to work on their song list. Got 11 out of the 14 done so that was ok. Band were fair pleased with what i'd done. Asked if i was interested and i said yes. All in all a good wee night of Whitesnake, Cher, Ozzy, AC/DC, etc. Dave

  3. Price drop: £600. Xmas sale price- now £575. EDIT: I'm now based in Barry, South Wales, not Cardiff. I can't quite believe I'm selling this bass, as it has been my favourite ever Pbass, and I've owned quite a few. These have been discontinued a few years now. They are amazing basses. This one sounds absolutely immense, and the neck feels lovely to play - really smooth. It has great sustain. These were made alongside the superb Roadworn series, and they were amazing build quality too. Wish I could have justified keeping my Roadworn Jazz, and Roadworn P - but i can't justify keeping too many! So why are you selling it? I hear you ask. Well, it's mainly because I'm mostly gigging with Upright, and short scale bass guitars. Age has started to dictate that I need less weight on the left shoulder, as I'm playing some long gigs. Also, I'm tending to prefer less stretching for my left hand fingers too.... sadly. It weighs just a shade under 4kg, if memory serves me, and the nut is 44mm wide - and it's not overly deep, front-to-back, so doesn't feel too chunky. I did try a couple of slimmer necks on this bass, inc a US Jazz maple boarded neck, and an MIJ neck which was slightly slimmer. However, nothing really sounded as resonant, as punchy, or as snappy as when this original neck is on the bass. I guess they get the matching just right in the factory? EDIT: also, maybe the wider neck gives the bass more punch, or low end? Both maple board necks had more snappiness than the rosewood, and it the low end really was more defined with this neck than the US Jazz neck.... Currently strung with my favourite TI flats, which are about 2.5 years old, and nicely bedded in. I could put a set of rounds on it, if you prefer - but I would urge the buyer to try the bass with these flats... they really are superb. This bass originally had an anodised gold scratchplate, but I just preferred Tort. I don't have the original plate, but you can get them easily enough on eBay. There is a small scratch / ding on the upper edge, near the back of the body. This is from the previous owner. I gently sanded the edges of this, to stop it catching on my shirt. No trades thanks. I need to thin the herd. Collection from Cardiff, or I might be able to meet. I much prefer to hand a bass over, and give the buyer chance to try.

  4. Up for sale,is my lovely lakland DJ4, looks stunning in the LPB!....the bass is in beautiful condition as you can see in the pics...this is an earlier Korean version and has a nice low fast action and weighs in at 8.6lbs unlike some of the later basses that were heavier!....trussrod is excellent, when I bought the bass, it was fitted with ernie ball group 2 flats with absolutely no ill effect(if I can find them, you can have them)..to include shipping,uk only...Will be in a gig bag inside a larger cardboard box and very well packaged (this will be at buyers own risk)i always pack within an inch of it's life though .alternatively you could arrange your own courier....thanks for looking, any questions, just ask....£725

  6. Sad one this, but I didn’t play it… Here’s my 1978 Gibson Ripper bass in the glorious black. This sounds absolutely amazing. It’s been in the BC family for years (original FS ad posted below). The bass has a couple of necessary changes. It’s wearing straplocks (standard) the bridge cover is a replacement and the pickup and cover are Kent Armstrong like-for-like swaps. The bass sounds *incredible* and it’s got a lovely, full and rich tone. It’s currently wearing flats which inevitably add to that. Gibsons notoriously have low frets and this one is no different. The reason for the (relatively) low price is that the frets at the nut are very low. A dress will help but it may be worth considering a replacement in the near future. The bass is marked a Second. After asking some experts, consensus was it was likely a minor blemish. Could it be this freer marker dot? Quite possibly. The bass comes with a Hiscox case. I will send the bass to you but you’re more than welcome to come and try it (encouraged, even!) Price is £1895 £1650 £1550 which is reasonable for a bass that I admit may need a little work in the future. Images here. More on request. I’ll be sad to see this go but my roof work is taking longer and costing more.

  7. Always take a gig! Our new singer was on holiday so a friend from a band I depped in stepped up, as did a harmonica player. We just jammed it, great fun! Otis Jay Blues Band, Flea Jazz into an Elf/Barefaced One10 combination.

  8. I was brave enough, or maybe daft enough, to give the fretless a run out. Due to the dep guitarist being unavailable we switched songs to make it easier for others to join us. So the pub was treated to punk on a fretless. The host band even had the good grace to have my vocal mic low in the mix at the start which gave a me a bar or 2 to (almost) find the pitch 😀. 3 bands didn't turn up which meant a runaround for the organiser to fill those slots. It became a Blues Jam - which was fun.

  10. Real price is 1500. Made a mistake on the smartphone. Not 1800, it is 1500. No need to say much about this bass. Like new, only did rehearsals with it. Very rare. Goes woth the bag and the paperwork. I am very reluctant to sell this bass, because it’s one of my favorites. But I am selling half of my collection. Price is firm. I’m selling more basses, so if this one remains for last, I will keep it. Thank you.

  12. Serek Midwestern. Great condition, minor chips due to the very thin paint Jake applies on his basses. Pickup is Guild Bisonic. Currently with flats, but it goes with rounds hi-beam on the bag. The sound samples are with the rounds and it sounds awesome with them. Goes with a great Gator bag. Price is firm. Thank you. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CqumKZXMqlB/?igsh=aXB6dzFzYW9ibHIw https://youtu.be/TuJRc_OqsvE?si=y7erSCYlGRAcs97i https://youtu.be/0In-gAU8Eao?si=AJo2XlYGSDDAySUz https://youtu.be/G41tlH-E-Zo?feature=shared

  13. New Hollow Body Bass Day. I've been after a hollow body bass for the tone and this showed up in the research. A Sire Marcus Miller GB5 - the fretted version. I was impressed in the demo videos I saw/heard - it had the sound I was looking for and it's not bad looking. There was one for sale in Bax at £397 so I jumped in. Ordered on Tuesday, it arrived this afternoon. Shiny black (that won't last after my grubby fingerprints get on it 😀) , great playability straight from the box and almost the sound I was expecting without any dialing in of the amp. My only criticism is that the point on the body where my arm rests is quite sharp - no contour. It means a slight adjustment of the position of my hand to be most comfortable. Not so much of a problem if I'm playing with a pick (which won't be that often on this).

  16. I don't think cabs are any more genre specific than basses. That's why guitar cabs don't have tweeters, and why most bass cabs with tweeters have the ability to turn them off.
    4 points
  17. I think you are talking about cabs that have a more limited and coloured sound. There's a new generation of cabs which don't colour your sound. IMO cabs are there to distribute the sound that has been generated by your bass, pedals and amp around the room in the most efficient way. If the cabs were genre specific, Jah Wobble and Tim Commerford wouldn't be using the same cabs. With the right amp, you can play any style of music, any style of bass through Barefaced cabs and you'll get a fantastic tone.

  19. Hi Here is my 2019 Fender Player Precision, Black and Maple Precision up for sale. I have replaced the original wiring with a Kiogon loom. I picked this up from a fellow BC'r on here about a year ago in a trade. Its a lovely thing, plays well, sounds just like a P should and is set up with a medium/low action. The neck is perfect with no blemishes, the body has some very small pitting above the pickguard, I have tried to capture it on the pictures but its not easy and invisible to sight or feel when playing. There is also a very small blemish on the bottom of the body which I have tried to capture. I have a tort, white and black pickguard for this bass, all included in the sale. Only selling as I'm sooo in love with my RW 50's Precision that this beauty is redundant. Any questions just ask. Collection from Milton Keynes or reasonable distance meet up.

  20. With a very heavy heart, after years of searching to find one, I now need to move my dream fretless on. So… for sale my 2011 Musicman Stingray unlined fretless 2eq in Tobacco Burst. Maple neck with Pau Ferro board. Weight is 4.1kg according to my bathroom scales. Rare fretless in stunning condition with no marks to speak of, comes with original hard case. Stunning finish, darker than the photos suggest. Very Pino! Lots of mwah! UK sale only, happy to courier at buyers expense if required. Not really interested in trades. Price is firm. Cheers for looking. Steve. *Following a question I have added a photo of the neck markers

  21. Hi, I am selling my 1994 Made In Japan, Fender Jazz Bass, Fretless JB62-FL. As you can see it’s in well loved and used condition which is to be expected with a 30 year old working instrument. That said it sounds amazing, plays superbly well, really channels that Jaco sound and aesthetic. Plenty of that fretless mwah and also has that classic Jazz Bass growl. Weighing in at 3.5kgs/7.7lbs and sits very comfortably on the shoulders Set up with Elite Flatwounds & It comes with a TGI Extreme Padded gig bag to protect it when you’re taking it out. I’ll include an Ernie Ball Strap as well. I have a box so shipping is doable. I am open to trades/part exs. But please don’t be offended if I decline. I have my eye on something so cash would be king in this case. Any questions, please ask away. Thanks.

Blank and confused look later… Joy Division I said. A band? said my monosyllabic passenger. We didn’t discuss Hooky.

  27. It is, @Thor, but struggling to make ends meet with town centre costs. We played a Tuesday night blues club which is an attempt to add to the weekend offering. Not as lucrative as a Sunday afternoon but we are now a minor ‘name’ and drew a good midweek crowd. So a win on all counts.

  31. My first good bass was a Thunderbird Pro IV. Some people don't like them because they're active, but that's probably because they didn't try flatwounds or tapewounds. GHS black tapewounds would look great on that and they're a good match for the pickups and electronics. Countless pickguards available these days, too.

  33. So, back home from my gig. I took the Elf and the Elf 2x8. No pedals, straight in with my Jazz bass. I walked in in one trip, bass in a gig bag over the shoulder, amp and cables etc in the pocket, Elf cab in one hand. All tone controls at noon, master on full, gain was around 10 or 11 o'clock. It was plenty, the band was loud, the drummer hit hard, there was a full sized Leslie cabinet on the hammond, the guitarist had a Marshall combo and we had two saxes. I was mightily impressed with it, and everyone said it was enough. Bear in mind, it was a small room, but I was still surprised how well it worked. I must admit to having a backup amp in the boot of the car, but I never felt the need to get it at half time. Rob

  34. Hi. Final Price £450 but No Offers as this is a great price for such a bass in prime condition and no play wear . I’ll move this on if no interest during October. A stonking performer that will cover a vast range of tones and this one’s a real looker ( + Matching Headstock, so difficult to find ). USA version acquired this year so I can’t justify keeping this beaut. I have another gorgeous bass for sale here because I couldn’t resist buying the USA made equivalent. An extravagance because the Tribute Series electronics and hardware are the same spec as the US made basses. Anyway, I’ve done it now so this beauty can be yours. I bought it new from Andertons in 2020. S/No 181122060 Made in 2018. Weight 4.36kg 9lbs 8oz. 43mm nut 19mm string spacing at the saddles ( D’Addario nickel plated rounds) These with the matching headstock were only made for a short while and seem a rarity preowned so here’s your chance! There are loads of Youtube demos of G&Ls L2000 so if you are not familiar, check those out. Volume Treble Bass and Leo Fender’s unique electronics means the Bass and Treble work when it’s in Passive mode. 3 switches Passive/Active/Active with high end treble Series/Parallel Pickups selector Bridge,Both, Neck. With all these controls it really is helpful to have the pickup selector. Flipping marvellous! 🤓 Not used a great deal as I have quite a few basses so no signs of wear and all works perfectly. Luscious creamy paint with gloss. Two tiny specks on the body front which simply look like dust. See if you can spot them in the photos. They’ll be joined by the usual dust in the air and really aren’t noticeable. I only spotted them yesterday by being OCD during my inspection! I’ve added two more pics showing the specks location. In the close up, for comparison, there are 3 specks of actual dust above the knob and switches happened to settle as I faffed before taking the shot. The body on this production run was Basswood but feels as solid and sounds like an Alder body. The fingerboards were Brazilian Cherry. Too light for me so I’ve darkened it with Fiebing’s Pro Dye liquid stain ( Dark Brown ) after consulting my usual Pro technician. Fret dot markers protected the pearl dots. I applied some matching cream Jockomo markers which can be removed but I love them. I’ve checked typical preowned prices to pitch mine but this is a rarer finish and in top condition. Upgraded knobs with indicators and upgraded string tree with slots. Having said that. Make me a near offer and we’ll see. I have other basses up for sale only. 3 others. Gave the fretboard an little oil clean today ( it didn’t need it but my paw marks are not on it now). Frets needed their annual polish so the end two photos show that. I’ll double box this to you using the original coffin box inside a large box. Cheers and please ask away if you wish. Quent

  35. A revelation! With no gigs for the forseeable, and after following this topic, I've spent the last few days seeing if I can play the tunes we usually perform from memory, and so far yes I have a list of 12 and growing! So pleased I tried it - as you say it became a crutch.

  41. I play in several bands, each being a quite different genre to the other - which I like, because each challenges me in a different way, and I really do like different genres of music. For my 5 piece rock, Reggae & pop covers band, I use a Markbass 2 x 10, along with an Epifani UL 1 x 10 (with tweeter). The amp head I used was a Markbass EVO1, because it is dual channel, and I sometimes need that. For a folk / Americana trio with fiddle & guitar, I mostly play upright (EUB) with some songs on bass guitar. For smaller venues, the Epifani 1x10 was my usual cab of choice.... However, Since getting my Acoustic Image, Double-shot cab, that has taken over. It's a 4 ohm cab, and using it with my Peavey Minimax head, I get the full output from the amp, using just that cab. The Doubleshot really works well with acoustic, folky and Americana style music. It also works really well with my African / folk crossover band, where I play either acoustic upright or EUB. I'm not using the EVO1 head so much these days, as I'm preferring the Peavey. I can get the sound I want from the EQ on the head, and get the 2nd channel, and even more EQ control from my Stanley Clarke acoustic preamp pedal. Re swapping between pick playing and finger style, I like the different sounds I get from each, and choose the style for each song. I sometimes need to adjust the volume just a little, when swapping between the 2. The AI cab really does suit most styles of music though - not just acoustic, folky stuff. I sometimes use it when the 5 piece band has to squeeze into a small venue.

  45. Don't we all bring different skills to the party? I have a good memory and an absolutely terrible grasp of musical theory. I've a fairly decent sense of rhythm and no musical ear to speak of. I'm also lazy enough to take short cuts rather than learn skills which I know would serve me better in the long run. I pretty much learn every song from tab and You Tube videos and I use my one skill to memorise everything parrot fashion. That's my version of lazy. A friend's father when I was in my teens was lead horn for the LSO, played the horn part on one of the Beatles songs and spent hours practising everything with the score in front of him. At the other extreme I've played with guitarists who don't need anything in front of them, one listen to a song and they have the chord sequence/rhythm/melody in their head and under their fingers (sadly not always the arrangement ) Are these people not musicians? I dislike singers with stands between them and the audience. I wonder how they sing words with feeling and expression if they don't know which word comes next. I'd prefer my front person to be actvely mobile and interacting with an audience and I've rarely seen classical singers, who don't generally dance their way through a recital, singing with a crib sheet. They learn the songs. However I really love that so many peoiple can make music, entertain and thrill other people. We aren't all the same and if the singer has a wonderful voice but a poor memory then why not use a stand? The joy of playing music with or for other people is that the whole is frequently greater than the sum of the parts. Should we really be saying to others this is the only way to do it?

  46. The wiring rout is the same on all Gibson/Epiphone Thunderbirds; this isn't anything about authenticity really, it's just convenience and laziness. When you think how the wiring snakes through a Les Paul body, there's an element of thought gone into it. With a Thunderbird, any holes for the pickup loom could easily be done before the wings are glued in; these Epiphone things are/were mass produced, multiples at a time. It's fine to mess with the headstock carving and body geometry, but the rout under the plate? Nah, leave it in.
