Well, tonight I actually played using all four fingers for the first time since the end of July! It hurt, my dexterity in that finger has gone to hell and I couldn't make it do anything like what I wanted it to do, really, but I played my bass... I'm feeling a bit overcome, really. Not like X-Factor "ohmygodthisissohugeeeee" overcome, but a bit of relief is definitely in evidence. I only played for five minutes as the skin is as thin as tissue paper, but I think that a few more minutes each day, or maybe every other day, should be a good start. The swelling is 90% down now and that weird hammer-head section in the second picture above is pretty much flattened out. Cheers, JRK14 points

Changing the topic a bit, we've been booked to do the sort of gig @Bluewine seems to thrive on. It's a 'christmas' event for the local supporters club for Liverpool FC at Cardiff Tramshed. There are 5,000 members but the venue is 1,000 capacity. Looks like we'll only have to do an hour, but it's an amazing venue (I've seen bands like Phil Campbell and Black Star Riders there) and we get house PA and lights with pros on both, so really excited!9 points

There's plenty of videos of him playing live and I believe he is either on tour at the moment or just about to be. It's interesting how on one hand youtube has given a lot more opportunities for musicians to get their work out there, but at the same time seems to attract more criticism of the musicians compared to those who have come to prominence through the historical non-youtube route. Very few people are saying "Steve Vai - yes he's good but it's all rehearsed to within a millimeter and he doesn't really have that much flair..." The fact is Charles Berthoud is one of the best bass players alive today and unlike most of us has actually come through a more formal route to get there (Classical Piano & Berkeley) - if people don't like his music then fine, but it seems a bit unfair to imply he somehow cheats - he epitomises the success that a lot of both talent and hard work can get.9 points

Off to a biker rally tonight with the Glam band. About 1hrs drive on outskirts of Edinburgh meaning i can go across country and avoid the by-pass rush hr at 4pm. Looks like we're doing the full set list tonight so that's gonna be approx 2.5hrs standing with platform boots. WHOO HOO. Dave8 points

So, anyone want to tell us about a gig they have recently performed at?7 points

With my acoustic duo, we never have a set list beforehand. We work on requests which the audience write down on forms we put on their tables and the bar etc. Just before we go on we check a few out for openers and then wing it from there really! Like you my guitarist mate is good with his banter, and people generally understand how we roll. We’ve been playing together now for over 30 years, (as a duo for around 25 of them ) and have honestly never had one rehearsal in all that time. Should we attempt a song which may be a bit tricky, we’ll have a quick talk through in one of the breaks and then go for it. Certainly keeps us on our toes, and the punters seem to enjoy it. We have 8 gigs this month so hopefully doing something right!7 points

This is my new slimline rig The idea is to play with different preamps into the power amp stage of the HB Block. Last night I used the 'BassDrive' on the MS-60B, which is apparently a Sansamp clone. The pairing with the P bass and flats was chunky and very satisfying. The advantage of the digital multi is I could add a noise gate to tame the rather lively fuzz on my board. The HB fits beautifully on my 2x8 stack and unlike some amps the DI out still works when going into the effects return; rather more unusually so does the master volume, which is really useful. So there it is. I can gig with any 'amp' I choose. Let the fun commence.6 points

This thing sounds mint. I think most people are familiar with them, if not there's some great videos comparing them to the likes of the Nobel etc online. Valve preamp, nice eq options, excellent cabsim and very hight quality DI. It dethroned the Capo for me which was a pedal I never saw myself parting with. I find myself without any music projects on the go or the horizon and I’m using the QC exclusively for everything now. If I had space and money, I'd be keeping this, but having sized down the office to an ever growing offspring and the financial burdens that come with it, this is on the chopping block! I'd record some audio samples, but think I’d end up withdrawing the ad if I did! Buyer pays postage.4 points

Just purchased one of the new Spector CST models in natural gloss , jeez this thing sounds good, it really does, huge warm bass tones with pin sharp clarity and some growl for good measure. For me the perfect bass tone , I had a feeling it was going to be good, looking forward to getting some recording done , 3/4 way through the next Extreme Danger album, this bass feels and looks really premium, love the sound from the Dark Glass electronics and pretty neat inside too. Neck isn’t skinny but comfy , very comfy instrument to play, they are quite pricey , in all honesty worth the cash the tone alone is just thunderous, never felt a bass ooze low end like this and you can dial in the growl you want. Highly recommended if you are sitting on the fence about buying one . Get it you won’t regret it.4 points

It has frets! Not a very neat job, but it's a small amount of progress. I did tidy up the side dots a while ago and didn't post about it. I also attempted to remove the ramp up to the old fretboard with a chisel that wasn't sharp enough. That needs tidying! I'm tempted to not entirely hide it and make a feature of it though, maybe with some metallic grain filler? Like a history of the mistakes I've made. So, still on the list is: Tidy up frets a bit Lower pickup cavities a few mm Make a rear cavity cover and recess it, nicely if possible Sand everything, including making the bit at the front look good Oil it Put it together Make a nut Setup Not loads, but not, not loads 😅4 points

The other week I went over for 3 gigs. Travelled with gear in the van (as a band). Declared ourselves as musicians and gear on board. Straight through without issue. Travelling with instruments, and the means to make them work (amps etc) is fine. Explained in the clip attached. Worth adding that I travel with the documents he links to printed and carried with me - just in case.4 points

For irrelevant data points, my wife prints tons, mostly labels, not photographic, these are for her shop so she will be printing hundreds of labels a month, full colour as well as black and white lists, and shipping labels, mostly black and white with a small logo on them. I have had to restrain her from being physically violent to many printers, she has gone through quite a few in the time she has run the shop (20 years). This printer, the Epson InkTank she still loves after 3 years. Hardly any cost in the use of the tank and really solid printing. Also unlike the cartridge, especially not the epsons, it doesn't dry up if you forget to print over a weekend. It was also only a couple of hundred quid. But, its not a printer that we use for photographs, we just use it as a colour office printer, which is what it is. If you want something to hammer away at a ton of things day in day out without fault, this is your chap.4 points

Oh my goodness! We're the complete polar opposite. No set list, just a big list of songs we know. All are usually called out by the guitar/vocalist on the fly, and occasionally songs that are NOT on the list. If he is stuck for a second or two we'll throw in some suggestions. It's a system that works for us, although I can understand it wouldn't work for everyone. It allows us to read the room and be very reactive to what will work at any point in the performance. It also allows for requests, which we are keen to attempt even if it's in a ridiculous way. There are no big gaps usually, but it does give scope for the guitarist to engage in a bit of banter with the audience. He is rather good at it, and it's a major USP of our band - good music and a good laugh too4 points

Well, that was an interesting gig tonight.... enjoyable but not what we were expecting. We've played the Canadian club many times and it's always at the back of their bar room with plenty of room for those who want to be up front and into the music. Show up this time and apparently we're playing outdoors in their BBQ area, ok so far but we get told it's a BBQ buffet and we're the background music, can't play louder than people talking. At this point I mentioned that they'd hired a punk band and Hendrix band to do background music! Not negotiable apparently and there's obviously been some missed communication although they knew what music we play. Anyway, it's a small scene here, so on with the show and don't ruffle feathers. We start the Hendrix band with some slow blues, JJ Cale and the like, then once everyone is lulled into a false sense of security we launched into Fire, just kicked it up several notches and left it there. When we finished the set, we gave them no time to gather their thoughts, got the other guys up and went straight into the Sex Pistols with barely a break. By then people were dancing so all seemed well, no recriminations from management and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Only other downside, got told no recording, no videos, no pics, so this gig lives on in memory only.4 points

1978 Fender Musicmaster in the original wine red finish. It’s a lovely finish and you can see the grain through it. The bass is in excellent condition for the year and weighs in at around 3.6kgs - nice and easy on the shoulders. It’s a shortscale bass and has 19 frets which are in good shape. Neck is very good with a few dings but none that bother the playability. A few dings to the body and marks (see pics) and some nice finish checking. Bass comes with CTS pots and custom made pickup. This sounds really punchy compared to the original (strat type guitar pickup) single coil pickup that the last owner had replaced. To my ears it has more of a P bass tone. I do have the original pots (although the shafts have been damaged) and the original capacitor is in situ. The other hardware; tuners, string tree, strap buttons, bridge, neck plate and knobs are original. When I bought it the wrong era replacement scratchplate had been installed so I bought the correct version from WD Music. There are some extra screw holes hidden under the plate as a result. The bass is a great later example of the small but perfectly formed and punchy Musicmaster now becoming sought after in their own right as a very playable alternative to the Mustang bass. I have two others both rather beaten up and they are my preferred bass these days but work on the house means something has to go….. UK sale only, sorry no trades. Pickup preferred but I can post at buyer’s cost. Thanks.3 points

Custom built Matamp 300 watt amp. Sowter prototype main chassis, Matamp preamp in Ormat style sleeve with gold stringing and gold plated strap handle mounts KT 120 outputs, will work fine with 66's.Comes complete with brand-new roqsolid cover Never gigged, smoke free home. This was intended as a production line, but the costs were just too much. Pics are Jeff Lewis when I collected this (& its brother, not the same output chassis) and the Sowter chassis pre build-up. Pick it up from Minehead or a courier (at your expense) can be arranged.3 points

Immaculate Barefaced SuperTwin, metal grill version with HotCovers cover. Well looked after in immaculate condition and in good working order. Only selling as I’ve downsized to a BigBaby III, although will be sorry to see the ST go. Here’s some info about the SuperTwin. Height: 29”. Width: 19”. Depth: 13.4”. Weight: 18kg (metal grill version). Max amp power: 1200w. Max output: 133db. Impedance: 4ohm. This is an unbelievably loud cab for its size. Gorgeous smooth tone with fantastic dispersion. I’ve used it playing outdoor festivals with no PA support and it hasn’t even broken a sweat. Tilt back wheels and top handle make it very easy to move, you can even pick it up with one hand with relative ease. Proper photos to come but look at my feedback if in any doubt, The SuperTwin in the supplied photo is what is for sale, the amp head and Spector bass are not for sale. I am blind and haven’t had opportunity to do pics yet. Only posting now in case someone wants it and wishes to collect this weekend. Priced to sell accordingly. I’m afraid I no longer have the packaging for this cab, so I can only offer collection. Please don’t ask me to meet you somewhere as I obviously cannot drive. I live 15 minutes from junctions 14 and 15 of the M1 just outside Milton Keynes.3 points

Right so apparently my refund is processing now so the other issue with that 3rd bass was the truss rod being completely maxed out and the bass having a little too much relief for my liking, more than the first bass which PinkMowhawk now has (the best of the three IMO). You can back off tension but it's at its limit so basically a goosed neck for all intents and purposes, playable (and giggable) as it is but if you need to make an adjustment in the future you're out of luck. All attempts at adjusting it were made with the strings slackened way off and no tension on the neck so it's definitely not a happy bass and one to avoid. I didn't reveal this earlier as I am always a little wary of shops knowing you've made (or in this case tried to make) a truss rod adjustment even though it's just a normal part of a setup, it's also why I asked for a straight refund instead of a repair/discount. I was planning on putting an Uni Pre in one of these anyway but not one I where I can't get the neck as flat as I'd like that might be a ticking timebomb in the future. Wish I'd just grabbed one of these when they first went on sale really as it looks like I've ended up with the dregs, all three of 'em!3 points

Think what you are doing is part of the show and makes for great entertainment IMO. When i see a band play i do find it very unprofessional when they are discussing what song be played next or the singer is telling the band what song is next. Our guitarist uses some pedals and needs time to change settings for some songs. I don't mind if the singer is announcing to the audience that this is a song by XXX called YYY but its more when a singer turns round to the band to tell them. Its a bit sloppy as someone mentioned earlier. I'd love to see you guys do the request gig. That must be great to watch and for me a huge respect for having that knowledge and ability to be able to do it. Even if the songs aren't perfect covers its still such an amazing achievement. Bet its a lot of fun too, for both the band and audience. Dave3 points

Anyone who thinks they're composing by typing a few prompts into an AI generator is just a little wide of the mark, no? It would be a grave mistake to mix it into the existing competition.3 points

The bass is fine for other genres, so why change it so it isn't fine any more? IMO you want a bass that sounds good in all genres, so keep it as it is and add the facility to sound good in this band. Get a preamp pedal.3 points

Hey! Up is 2 fantastic jazz basses. I csnt decide which to keep, so they're both going up, whichever goes first I'll keep the other! I'm leaning towards the Lakland but I love them both for different reasons. No1. Fender MIM Deluxe This has been coverted to passive and has top quality components, has recently had a full proffessional rewire and set up by my tech. Condition is 8/10 Looking for £500 No.2 Lakland 55-60 This is just a cracking bass, presented as stock, if youre into 35" scale this is a beast. Condition is 7/10 with a couple of big chips around the back. Looking for £800 I travel alot so meet ups are doable. I do have a bass box at the moment so shipping is an option at cost. Any, questions, give me a shout! Cal2 points

Hey, so I've not had a chance to experiment with chain placing yet, the pre-amp is a new purchase. But I'm intending (at the moment!) to keep it at the end to send my full signal to FoH via the DI. I've removed EQ patches from the Stomp so I can adjust on the fly using the pedal itself, as I find that a bit easier. So far, it's all been good. With a quick cable change I could send the clean signal from the pre-amp, but I've not had a go at that, it's on my to-do list.2 points

I have the same issue, its very irritating, as quite often they are made before the gig which means when I should be setting up the stuff,. I am trying to copy over the set list to my iPad We have an epson ink tank printer too, as my wife does printing for her labels for her shop - we have had it 3 years and have gone through 1.5 bottles of black and still on the original colours. But I don't have a printed out set list.2 points
