  1. Recently played as part of a scratch party band for the local cricket club end of season bash. It’s a bit of a collective of musicians and vocalists with some loose connection to the club (players, parents, wife’s etc). All very friendly and sociable. Two rehearsals only but came together nicely. The drummer was my neighbour who plays in loads of function bands. I had to play this one sitting down as I’m 4 weeks post pituitary surgery (don’t tell my doctor I played this!) and was feeling very fatigued by the end of it. It really made me concentrate on my playing rather than trying to “perform” if you know what I mean. Venue was Sandmartins, a local golf club function room, lovely acoustic, nicely dampened room, no shrill surfaces. Very welcoming and helpful staff, easy load in. Backline is owned/borrowed from club members and to my delight they have an Ashdown abm 4x10 and tc head to play through. Wonderful! Very fun hour set after the audience had got their awards (best bowler, batsman etc) and had been sufficiently lubricated at the bar. Mostly party stuff with a few band choices thrown in. I will survive, love shack, there is a light, summer of 69, easy, respect, lean on me etc. Singers great, audience appreciative, and a short trip home. Just what I needed actually! Music is a healer!

  2. Finally achieved the dream of owning a Zon fretless thanks to fellow BC'er Skinner. Top bass and top chap - it now takes pride of place along with my Sei fretless.

  3. Made in the legendary Matsumoku factory of Japan in 1984 this amazing bass features a stunning thru neck in maple with walnut stripes, rosewood fingerboard with snowflake inlays, Canadian ash body, brass nut and fully adjustable brass bridge, a plethora of tone options thanks to active/passive, dual sound, in phase/ out phase, series/parallel switches, 3 way pickup selector, and active and passive tone knobs. In excellent condition, especially for a 40 year old vintage bass, very minor wear to body, the neck is in beautiful condition and the electrics all work. One of the best examples ive come across in recent years. Comes with the original fitted Westone hardcase. No offers please its worth every penny. Can post for an additional £20

  5. So I have defretted the neck and started the process of sanding the fingerboard back - the laquer is worn through in several spots so it'll all have to come off. I'm also going to take a little bit of weight out of the back of the neck with my trusty cabinet scraper. A process I find massively relaxing...Here's a pic of the defretted neck, and the dogs leg...

  8. Latest iteration of my board. Gone are all the effects - I just don’t use them. This board is now purely about the tone, and covers my doubling gigs on EUB/fretless/acoustic/electric bass. The SushiboxFX Finally is really my secret sauce ‘always on’ pedal that just adds a lovely warmth in front of my amps and has a great FOH DI out. The TC Impulse loader is for my NS EUB and I am running the 3Sigma German bass and Czech bass impulses. Combined with the ninomute I’m getting a pretty convincing DB sound live.

  9. Reluctant sale of one of the best basses I've ever owned. Purchased new by me from Spain. It's in very good condition overall with a couple of very small nicks and some light surface marks. The frets are barely worn and the neck is straight. This limited run of USA 60th anniversary basses were created to show off all the best attributes of all the classic P basses over the years. Very light at 3.6kg. Did I mention it's a reluctant sale?

  10. Hi there! The issue with that is the bridge is recessed into the body, so sticking a different bridge in there is problematic. A local engineering company is making me a set of replacement parts so fingers crossed it’ll all work out with the original bridge.

  11. Remember the song "How Long" by Ace? Part of the lyrics went "how long has this been going on?" The answer was at least an hour and 30 minutes; At least it was when my ex-wife and I went for a meal at a local pub/restaurant around twenty years ago. The song was playing when we walked in and it was only after we had chatted for a while, received our drinks, and was tucking into our food, that I suddenly realised that the playback was stuck in a loop...it kept replaying the line "how long has this been going on" with exactly the right amount of music fill to start again with the line how long etc I called the waitress over and pointed this out to her and she said that she blanked out the background music and hadn't noticed. She said she that she would get someone to "sort it." My wife and I finished our meal, including a sweet ( I had talked to the waitress whilst we were on our main course), had more drinks all the while giggling away at how the line just kept repeating and repeating. When we left it was still playing!

  13. It's a good job I like the number and enjoy playing a slightly funky bass line to it - my band is named... Mustang Sally! We kick off every gig with "Hi folks, great to be back here in the [insert name] Club, we're Mustang Sally, let's start the party with our theme tune!" Cheesy, yes, but we're guaranteed some dance floor action right from the get-go.

  14. As I need space and money for "the double-bass love of my life" I sell some real special stuff. Selling something very rare and special: Millenia TD-1 Studio preamp. Pretty much "as good as it gets" when it comes to state-of-the-art recording. Anthony Jackson used Millenia Preamps for years in his live rig. I used the preamp in my studio for bass recordings. But it is also excellent for almost any other instrument or vocals. Very flexable and versatile with the tube preamp and transistor preamp. Please check out the online reviews as I am pretty much a tech-dummy. Mint-condition, please check the pictures. The preamp never left my house. No transport, it was a permanent part of my studio signal chain. The preamp comes with power cable and rack ears. Asking GBP 1130 / 1350 Euro Shipping (at buyer's cost and risk) is no problem! The preamp is located in Germany. https://mil-media.com/td-1

  15. Just wanted to share in case someone's on the fence about these. IMHO it sounds great, feels great and seems to have been a serious project for that unnameable B company. From first impressions: melurves its lush sound, great depth and quirkiness. Well-recommended! I went for the Blue Marvin variety, with the spring reverb that is often regarded as being of lesser quality than the digital reverb in the standard 2600, and I have to say I don't mind its noise and quirks; its sound brings me back 50 years, and of course I could always add another reverb. Well-chuffed! (borrowed pic to show its monochromatic leds)

  19. Hi everyone, not posted before so sorry if I've done it in the wrong place I'm going to see Pino in Cardiff on Monday and wondered if anyone fancied meeting me there as I have an access ticket (so I paid for the main one and I get one free for a companion) the two bass player friends I've asked aren't able to come )and I'd like to go with another bass player as they'll enjoy it more than a non-bass player) here's the text in the Email to prove it's a genuine ticket. Pino Palladino & Friends on Monday 14 October 2024 at 19:30 in Neuadd Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall 1 Full Price | Pris Llawn ticket (Cylch | Circle : N7) at £0.00 1 Full Price | Pris Llawn ticket (Cylch | Circle : N8) at £30.00 As I said it's totally free, I'd just need support with guiding as I'm between guide dogs at the moment and my 11 YO retired guide dog doesn't appreciate loud music )although he faithfully sits outside the door when I'm practising) Anyway, thanks for reading.

  22. So, a LPB Jaguar H became available. So I snagged it. Now I'm less bothered about keeping the charcoal one, but if I do get to keep it it's going to be a fun time swapping bits and bobs! No reply from Thomann today - whether that's a good sign (request gone "upstairs") or not (they're ignoring me and hoping I just give up)...

  26. ...and last week picked up a 2103x cab from a chap in London, combined it with the 1x15 I got just after Christmas and the fixed GP7, to make my current (as of last week) first choice rig (and yes I have a trolley to move it!). Cost to me £75 in total - frankly unbelievable given the sound - first gig with it next week which I am very much looking forward to!

  27. ****UPDATE - REDUCTION TO £3000.00***** Hey guys, this is the second of my basses to go - I'm not gigging regularly and have weighed up for 2 years now which 2 I would let go. With a heavy heart, I'm putting up for sale my beautiful 1974 Fender Jazz Bass in sunburst with RW board, block and bound neck and black scratchplate. It's in beautiful condition, with literally about 2 or 3 'dings' on the body, which you can see in the photos. When I bought it, it hadn't been played in years - my guess is that it had laid under someones bed or something as it hasn't had a hard life at all. I mainly used it for recording and 'bigger' type gigs - not for weddings and pubs etc! I dated the pots off the codes - week 5 of 1974. Red ink on the bottom of the pickups appear to show 1974 and the serial number can obvs be checked also. I've owned it once 2015. The neck pickup wasn't working at all when I got it, so Matt at ://www.houseoftonepickups.com gave it a full set up and rewound the neck pick up back to period correct specs and wax potted - all hand wound. I have the paperwork from Matt somewhere. She sounds absolutely mint and is a decent, comfortable weight!! Test drives welcome with a brew provided in Wrexham. Comes in a modern, used, Fender hard case. I'd rather not post this due to value - at your risk!! Surely something of this vintage needs picking up! Sale only, no trades. 14-10-2024 - added a photo of underside of pots - can see codes 1377405 - week 5 Jan 1974. It all seems to add up to being a late 1973 / early 1974 4 bolt neck Jazz Bass. I'll have to remove strings and scratchplate etc to look underneath pickups etc as I can't seem to find the photos Matt took for me when he rewound the neck pickup. Cheers, BITF.

  28. Cort Space 5 Bought new from Bass Direct about 6 months ago (I have the receipt), still in very good condition - just a few little light cosmetic marks. Plays well, sounds good, well balanced while being lightweight and comfortable. 3.56kg. (slightly less than 8lbs) With Cort gig bag. £560 £490 Collection preferred: I live in Chichester, or am in West London on Mondays, or Worthing Wednesdays. If posting: It will be well protected in gig bag & cort box & wrapping & outside box. No Trades for Basses or Amps or Cabs etc. The only thing I'm after is a decent compressor pedal (Cali 76, Empress, Becos, BC-1X).

  31. Hey @Jonesy, thanks! Defo noted if ever happens to me... Agree, me neither! I moaned to Andertons and punched a new order - in fairness to them, they emailed me quickly and told me they're ready to do an exchange 'on the fly' tomorrow, with me handing to the courier the faulty bass, and receiving a fresh one at the same time. This means I'm not out of pocket as they processed this as an exchange rather than two orders with one return. They have assured me that they'll have a look on the new unit and will send me the lightest Z7 mint they've got. Crossed fingers I will have a good update tomorrow. So @Minininjarob, I'm happy to buy and keep but keep an eye on QC - everything else was perfect on mine, apart from such battery thing, and the knobs. Now, I do not think those knobs will improve in future iterations... Ander.

  32. I wouldn’t accept an instrument with battery acid leaked all over to be honest, that’s terrible. I would want a new battery compartment on that at the very least. I think I’ll wait a while until these issues are sorted.

  34. Hi. If you're still looking for someone to go to the gig with I'd love the opportunity. I didn't think I was free on the 14th and so didn't but a ticket. Pino is one of my favourite bas players. I've followed him since first hearing his distinctive fretless playing on No Parlez. I've seen him a few times....last time was with John Mayer. Guitar is actually my first instrument but have played bass in several semi-pro bands over the years. My brother, Jason, is fortunate to have a ticket and he is an amazing bass player. I taught him in the early days but he quickly exceeded my skills. I'm an Occupational Therapist by profession and would be more than happy to support you. Happy to pay for the ticket or half at the very least. In the unlikely event that you haven't found someone to go with, let me know. Thanks. Sean

  35. I’m on my third EUB, and each one has been quite different. Like quite a few of us electric players who’ve crossed over to DB, I started with the Stagg which sounded nothing like a DB and was difficult to play as it spun around requiring a lot of left hand steadying. My second was a five string KK Baby Bass, and whilst this was a massive step up from the Stagg, I had issues with the weight of the instrument which ultimately led to an old left thumb injury rearing its head, so that one had to go. Sound-wise, the KK definitely had thump but it missed the harmonic content of a true DB. I’m now gigging an NS NXT 4 string and this has been a revelation. The fact the bass is on a stand means you can get the bass to sit where you want it to, taking all the stress out of your left hand/arm. Sound-wise, again it doesn’t sound like a DB ‘out of the box’ (and it was never intended to) but there are a few tricks you can do (change to the NS Traditional string, use a ninomute or similar) that can get you pretty darned close. In my current doubling rig, I am running the NS through a TC Electronics impulse loader using the 3Sigma impulses designed specifically for the NS and others tell me I am achieving a very convincing double bass sound/tone. Bottom line is you can spend thousands going down the EUB route and still not achieve a true double bass sound/tone. Where I am at right now is a sound/tone that is close enough to the sound of a good DB amplified using a piezo type pickup, and whilst I am still lusting after a real DB, I’m happy where I am at right now. However, if I ever get the wife’s redundant treadmill out of my office/man cave, then a real DB will probably arrive shortly thereafter.

  36. ...and then there was last week's bargain. Mentioned to my buddy that I was heading to Cardiff for a meeting, and he pointed out this 1818x in Barry for £20. I swung passed and grabbed it while I was down there. Was in a bit of a state but the speakers were fine and the crossover as well once we had bypassed the broken jack inputs. Cleaned up and it looks a whole lot more presentable now. Just in the process of switching out the old (broken) xlr connectors for some speakons which also means a new back-plate, but in doing so can also keep the biamp option (if two inputs are used the cross over will stick a 250Hz HPF on the 10 inch which is quite cool): After a bit of TLC and black paint:

  37. I imagine at this price point, inspected means "is the neck still attached?" and not a lot else. I think the best thing to do would be to unscrew and remove the battery compartment, give it a good clean and make sure there's no damage underneath it, or to the wires connecting to the preamp. Or, ask Andertons first and see if they would be prepared to pick up the bill if you got a luthier to make good. But it really depends how bad it is, as it may literally just wipe right off. These basses are new, they haven't been sat in storage that long.

  39. The DNA of the Thundergun shares little with an actual Thunderbird; the raised centre block on the body and the word Thunder in it's name... that's pretty much it. Beyond that it's got more in common with a hybrid Jaguar body and P/MM guts.

  44. Using a specialist shop gives you: Their customer base Their reputation and credibility Their market knowledge Somewhere easy to view and try your bass These shops are not going to want your bass hanging around for ages, so talk with them, and if they come up with a good price let them have a short period of exclusivity. If you do advertise it yourself, I read recently that second hand values for 'as new' basses are around 70-80% of the new price (street price not RRP). Good luck whichever way you choose, and if it is the shop route and you are in London, give Wunjo a try.
