I wasn’t really in the market for a new bass, but when I saw this up for sale, I felt I had to seize the opportunity. It’s a masterbuilt Warwick streamer stage II in a beautiful red finish. Interested to know if anyone owns or has previously owned a stage II. This is costing me a little over £3000, which is a lot but considering ordering one of these from Warwick is the pointy end of £8000, I figured it was a decent deal. This bass has never actually been played, so I’m getting a brand new instrument.25 points

To everyone involved, I’m baffled. I have to make a really clear point - we’re not destitute hand out folk at all - really not. This is an odd scenario for me and I’m rubbish at accepting help and knowing what to do with it. As a family we’ve always persevered and somehow managed where we’re at… I know this is not unique, I know all of you have lives, trials and tribulations. So I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Jenny is knocked out by this - sends her love and thanks. But we have been sold a “dream” and hung onto it for over 4 years - the reality is, Iris manages most tasks, but has zero independence because I have to carry her upstairs or monitor her climbing (she’s able to do this, but has a very fragile head due to Hydrocephalus so it’s risky) - she cannot get herself onto a toilet etc, so she has to be in Pull ups which she’s now becoming embarrassed about. We could’ve moved house - but they assured us they could adapt ours with an extension with a lift, sort of a mini house for iris. I cannot put enough words into this. I’m stunned. @Clarky you are a bloody great person.23 points

I’ll just say this, as I know @AndyTravis probably won’t, in that the funds from the sale of the Ripper were to add towards what is going to be a fairly hefty invoice for all the works that need doing for Iris. £2,300 doesn’t come close to what Jen and Andy were promised they would be allocated only for the goal posts to have been shifted on them. I don’t see any harm in letting this roll for a bit so that Iris can get what she needs sooner rather than later.18 points

We (Fine Lines) played at Ragged Bear Festival in Nuneaton, held at Queens Hall (or EEN L according to the sign). Audience seemed to like what we did (no glasses managed to hit us), despite us not being traditional "folk". Gear used was the usual (for me) Sklar Warwick Rockbass, Shure wireless, Origin compressor, DCX and Bassrig. No amplifiers were harmed in the making of this show. There's also one of my really bad YouTube videos, which I won't be offended if you don't watch (there is a song towards the end of the video).18 points

First outing earlier for a blues/rock outfit I cobbled together a month ago. A decent turnout at a local pub paid well, two 45 min sets and home by midnight. Sandberg vt4 - Two notes ReVolt - Rcf932a, overkill but sounded great and needed to be done.17 points

I’ve just sent chapter and verse to @Clarky - my head has well and truly fallen off. I am humbled and so grateful. The gear sale may have to continue as there’s a lot of work to do (detailed in my essay to Clarky) - basically to make the thing work in its entirety, we have to lose the family living room and move the kitchen… Iris will get her statutory grant - not anything like enough to follow the original plans of her own space; we will make it work somehow. We could do a massive remortgage, but in a world where our mortgage payments went up about 25% last year - we cannot financially do it. We cannot relocate as we rely heavily on our family network for her appointments and the other kids too. They did say there was a relocation Grant available…then told us the rules changed…because we work. 😒 My original idea of winning the lottery hasn’t quite worked as I’d planned… What I do know is this…you’re all absolutely feckin brilliant.16 points

As not everyone will naturally read a Gibson FS ad (can't think why), this is to draw your attention to a fundraiser to help BC stalwart Andy Travis and his daughter Iris. See within this ad. Cheers Clarky https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/503434-gibson-“the-ripper”-1976/ ... and here is the JustGiving link https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/mark-clark-313 points

Played at the ARC in Stockton on Tees with Elton Joel as part of the Counterfest tribute festival which is spread over six venues throughout the town centre. That whole bit of town was dead busy with people hopping between venues to see the different acts on. Great vibe to it fair play! Stage space was quite limited so stuck with one Yamaha bass throughout and my small Markbass traveller rig. Onstage sound at sound check was quite indistinct but once the place was full it all made sense and was much clearer. Steamy hot and busy gig too. Nicely done. Also made full use of the clocks going back to get an extra hour kip after three-hour drive back home to Leicestershire….12 points

The pub we played at tonight, we were supposed to play at last night, but they asked us to move because of the football match (Leicester lost badly to Nottingham Forest). I'm not sure if we've done a Saturday there before, so whether it's the switch or if it's normally quiet on a Saturday - there were not many people there when we started. The load in is a park up with hazards on, on double yellow lines, on a hump-backed bridge and a quick chuck-in to the tiny playing area before moving the cars. All didn't bode well, especially at it is not even a cash pickup at the end of the night either - invoice and wait! However it was the first opportunity to try out my Sterling Sub5 since I fitted the new Retrovibe Stinger preamp. Wow - it's absolutely transformed the bass! What was a muddy and indistinct bass now has bite, growl, thump and (dare I say it) heft. I had a whale of a time playing it. The B string is lovely. It also is about 2/3 the weight of my usual Sire P7-5. Guess which bass I'll be playing at the Donkey tomorrow... The only slight downside is that my Boss GT-6B seemed to have difficulty tracking the note when it was quite twangy - the octaver and synth patches I use in some songs both had a bit of a funny turn until I plucked a bit nearer the neck to reduce the overtones. I'll just have to remember to do that next time. Anyway the night did seem to pick up a bit as more came in, and we kept them in the pub which is the main thing. It's not a good situation though. The pub music scene seems as fragile as I've ever known it in 40 years of playing. Anyway, obligatory rig shots... And to think I had it up for sale recently. £75 spent on a better preamp has transformed it, and it paid for itself tonight - it owes me nothing now.12 points

I think Iris has become our collective mascot (if it wasn't already a pair of dachshunds........wait a minute, I'm a cat lover!). On a serious note, I suspect many of us are parents and we fight ferociously for the wellbeing of our children. I think we are just expressing the support that we can for you. Life has some horrible twists and turns and it is just affirmative for all of us to help your family Andy.11 points

Superb gig with Clutching at Straws, Horseshoe, Thurlby. Ticketed Halloween do, couple of one hour sets. We played great - all party bangers all night and the sound was good. Key’s son brought his harps along and he can WAIL. Usual Dimension, GK, Barefaced.11 points

As a postscript to this, I REALLY must take things easier for recuperation!!! I may be out of the plaster cast and into an Aircast, so I can stand easier, but I very much overdid it on Friday night and was crippled all day yesterday 🤒 They're only gigs and whilst they may keep me sane, standing for too long will not aid full recuperation! Next week I must go full Val Doonican and have (and use) a stool at the gig - I also have to run sound for use, but the others will have to set everything up first!10 points

Returned to The New Inn in Buckingham last night. Started off a little quiet but filled up nicely later on and turned into a great night. Got two bookings for next year. Only pic shows our guitarist sound checking.10 points

Eerily prescient - see below! A weekend of gigs to report on. Friday night with Nine Lives at The Leathan in Portlethen, near Aberdeen. It's an odd place to play - hard floor, low ceiling, band area walled in on both sides half way up. Caused a plethora of sound issues to be worked around, we were a few mins late starting. From gremlins with the singer's wireless mic (a lot of hiss for some reason - went wired in the end), to having to drop the bass down a lot because too much boom. But when we did get going, we had a good time, sound got better in the second half, probably because it got a bit busier. It was a good night - a small crowd but lots of enthusiastic dancing makes it worth double. Gear was Sire Z7 then G&L wunkay into the usual Markbass tone cubes. Saturday afternoon I did some wiring work on my Squier Jag H, was feeling cocky so I took it to the gig at night (with a backup, of course). Saturday night was at Gray's Inn in Mastrick, Aberdeen, again with Nine Lives. What a difference a room makes - wide open space, carpeted floor, high ceiling. Setup was a breeze and the drummer (who has taken up the challenge of being main sound guy, as well as being a sound guy!) nailed the levels almost right away. A less busy time, but we still had a few folk up dancing. I went walkabout through to the other bit of the bar where people were being shy and took 25% of the show to them. You can run, but you can't hide when the bass player's wireless! The Squier Jag H performed flawlessly, what a glorious sound in series mode! I was having so much fun I played it for the whole night (sorry you left the house for nothing, Triad). Modified Squier Jag H all night into the yellow and black modular bringer of boom.9 points

A rare outing for Felis Leo last night at the Avon Brewery, Salisbury. We were supporting another local lot, Punkture. First outing for our new drummer Darrell and my 6th gig since joining in April '22. It all went really well if not a little on the fast side at times. Managed to fit all our set in, I thought it would be a squeeze but maybe the faster pace shaded a few seconds here and there off the tunes 😆 Loads of great feedback, we might be getting somewhere now and gigs might be more forthcoming... might've picked up 2 from last night. A couple of Punkture's band used to play with Paul Di'anno so they paid tribute to him during their set. He lived round these parts for many a year. VID-20241027-WA0001.mp4 Gear. I plugged my Lakland 55-02 into my TC Electronic BH550 connected to the Ashdown 2x10 cab of Punkture's bassist (who I noticed had a Shuker black P bass, couldn't see the signature on it though, forgot me glasses🤓).8 points

Not a great night for us. We just couldn't get our groove going for some reason. We had a dep drummer but that wasn't the problem. On the plus side we sold 94 tickets at $15.00 a piece. Daryl8 points

It's a shame @AndyTravis if you still have to sell gear, including the Ripper, to afford the significant house re-fitting work needed to help Iris. But ultimately a bass is wood and wire and your family's health comes first every time. Hopefully the generosity of the BC community makes a meaningful dent in your outlays to help your daughter. Very best wishes, Clarky8 points

I went to Leiden on a work trip earlier this year and found "Guitars and Beans" which I thought was an awesome idea - coffee shop plus guitar shop. I ended up staying for a couple hours, bought lots of coffee (and some picks!) and every now and then tried out a different instrument. I'm suprised more guitar shops are not explictly trying this business model.8 points

I think the very existence of physical musical instrument shops needs to supported. I always try to buy something when I go into them. It’s a super tough market for them and they are competing with the online box shifters who don’t have the same overheads (sorry for restating the blindingly obvious).7 points

I’m getting boring but have a look at Tony Edwards Guitars https://tonyedwardsguitars.co.uk. Tony made me a short-scale to my spec with Babicz bridge and his own hand wound pickups for around the £1K mark. Now things have moved on price wise but I still think he will be very competitive and you get it to exactly what you want.7 points

I have an Atelier Z short scale jazz I might need to put up for sale at some point, it’s the ZPO-4Jr model (the one with the downsized Precision-ish body before they started using the Mustang shape for the Baby Z). It’s natural ash / maple, 17mm spacing. I bought it brand new, ordered from Japan a few years ago. I’m slightly in two minds about it so might end up holding on to it. It’s such a great little bass but I’ve spent a bunch of money on amp/cab related stuff this year..6 points

My trusty pair of BB604 basses. Gave them a wipe down after a particularly sweaty gig last night, and thought they looked lovely in the autumn sunshine on my settee. Not traditional BB shapes, but BB basses nonetheless.6 points

This was mine, and I know how much @AndyTravis was looking forward to getting it and how much he loves the bass ( I also know where the money for the purchase came from). He is making the right but tough decision as yes family always first, he wouldn't have it any other way. I have 5 Rippers otherwise he knows I would have it back. If anyone from this parish buys it from him at there asking price, I will chuck in a fairly new Jack Cassidy case which these basses also fit in ( Andy told me this yonks ago) and post it to Andy before shipping. Big love Mr T6 points

My virtually immaculate Japanese Modern 5 Sadowsky up for sale. I’ve had this bass now for around 18 months to a year now, and was my go to, until recently. Been favouring my jazz bass as of late, and this is now relegated to back up. I’ve had the middle pick up added (it’s been covered before on other threads). Only one tiny mark I can see on the rear of the body, that I’ve pictured. Original pick ups are supplied, and also comes with the Sadowsky soft/hard case. All the specs can be found online- think it’s 19mm spacing at the bridge. Weighs between 8.2 and 8.4 lbs (got both readings a few times). I’m not interested in shipping this to be honest, so will be a meet up somewhere preferably. Trades wise, there’s not much I really need. Only selling really, to get some Bergantino HS cabs and Schroeder cabs I’ve seen. Thanks for looking. Paul5 points
