  1. Last night was my second dep with a really good local band that has a guitarist in common with my main band - both power/operatic metal originals, ours a bit heavier with two guitars - theirs a bit lighter with guitar and keyboard. The first dep was an acoustic-ish birthday party set as they were missing drummer and bassist, so got me in to play a 50/50 mix of covers and their lighter originals. This one was another private party, but a full electric gig with only their bassist absent. It all looked like it might not happen as the planned venue had an unforeseeable problem so had to pull out at the last minute, but another nearby venue stepped in to host and it all went ahead just a short walk down the road. Then one of the bands pulled out of the gig as they were travelling in and didn't fancy the idea of getting stuck on the way back due to the weather - again, perfectly reasonable. So we ended up all taking longer sets, which is fine if you know the full back catalogue of the band due to being... well.. in the band, but I'd only learned one spare original so we ended up adding a cover that they recorded and released their version of during lockdown, and which I'd done acoustically at the previous gig so had no problem rocking back up. 45 minutes passed very quickly and I don't actually think I messed anything up. There were a couple of bits where somebody else came in early, and a missed cue for a guitar solo that resulted in another loop through the chords before commencing, both of which I spotted and adjusted accordingly. I wouldn't normally congratulate myself for such basic musicianship but they're original songs that move at a fair pace, so I was quite pleased not to get tripped up. I did forget to put in my earplugs for the first song, which was interesting as it showed me just how much top end detail the Doc's ProPlugs take away, and how I might like to have some of it back to a safe level. I shall have to try some different ones and see if there's something a bit better for me out there. The other bands on the bill were great and I was able to have a few drinks and enjoy them as we were opening the night and I was getting a lift. Got home just in time to see the snow start settling, so I reckon the band that decided it was a bad idea to travel 100 miles each way made the right call. Signal chain for the evening... Ibanez SR1105B -> [G30 wireless -> TU3 tuner -> Thumpinator -> MXR M87 compressor -> SansAmp BDDI v2] -> GK MB500 -> Blackstar house cab - might have been a Unity Elite 115C Tuner operated using a pair of Skechers Industrial Workshire boots - to say they're safety boots they make even moderately damp surfaces feel like well greased glass, but they're black and comfy.

  2. Seven piece swing/jazz band gig yesterday afternoon for a 90th birthday party for a very lively 90 year old lady. Probably 50 in attendance, they drifted in and out and most were of a certain age (three were 90 or older) and a few danced and they all seemed to enjoy our music, mostly big band charts from the lady's birth in 1935 into the '60's. The band has existed for about 8 years and for the first time we used two subs (deps in your part of the world), one to replace the trombonist who was ill and the other to fill in for the drummer who had family commitments. Both are outstanding musicians and excellent readers who sight read the 40 or so songs we played with no problems, and some of the charts are quite challenging. It was a fun gig, basically a wallpaper music gig but we had applause after every song and went home happy with our performance. Unfortunately they had cleared away the buffet of sandwiches and finger food before we finished but at least coffee was available for the ride home. Usual Shen SB100 into our Bose PA with a Schatten Design mini preamp that only has a volume control but is really handy on a gig like this, wireless (NUX C-5RC) into the preamp and EQ on the Bose and great sound. A bit crowded on an 8x12 riser, I was on the riser behind the big music stand on the right, no room for the Hercules bass stand so it stayed on the floor between sets.

  3. Just got in from a Spacewasters gig in Wingham, Kent (a 100 mile journey which the drummer did). Was a sort of private party, it went well, 3 bands on with us 2nd though we left as soon as we’d finished due to the possibility of snow. I played my CIJ Mustang bass through the provided - I think - Harley Benton combo, probably a 1x12 but was fine for on stage sound. My footwear was my winter DM Chelsea boots. We did encounter snow though thankfully wasn’t too bad til we hit Watford dropping off the guitarist.

  4. First gig of the year last night, it was a late one where we stopped playing at 12.40, new venue to us and thought it might be quiet just after Christmas, it turns out it was very busy and a lot of folk up dancing in our third set. Started loading out about 1am and realised it was snowing heavily, the cars totally covered in snow, the journey home up the A1 was horrendous, hardly any traffic so the snow had covered the dual carriageway so bad it was difficult to navigate what lane you were in, plus the snow coming down at the windscreen always makes your eyes feel funny.

  5. Finally made the call tonight and left the Punk covers band Emergency Exit after 3 fantastic yrs of great fun and really enjoying the songs. We had taken a break to see how things developed but absolutely no change. A complete lack of interest with no enthusiasm or excitement within the band over past 4+mths. Decided i'd had enough hanging around hoping things would change and just called it a day. There are no ill-feelings within the band in any way. Its just ran its course ........ for me anyways. Time to move on and find something else to fill the gaps between Glam gigs. Still waiting to see what's happening with the new project of 80's classic rock which we put on hold until after the festive period. I'm gonna miss the raw power of those punk songs tho. Dave

  6. Giving up playing (at least live) so am offloading the vast majority of my gear. This a a very nice GB Rumour which I’m reluctantly selling, but I’m just not using it enough. Bought from BassBros a few years ago so have used their images as they show it better than mine could! Fitted with blue side & front led’s Would prefer collection for this, but I do have a hard case and box to shop it in, but I would want to make sure that the shipping costs included insurance up to its full value, so it wouldn’t be cheap. Any questions just ask. 8. A couple of years ago I bought a thing called Focusrite Scarlet. It's a box with a couple of cables, a mic , stand and headphones. According to the blurb "Easy Start gets you set up in minutes. All the software you need is in the box. There’s no faster way to make studio quality recordings than Scarlett." Utter sh1te , I spent hours registering things, downloading things, no software came with it. In frustration I downloaded a couple of different recording software packages, couldn't get my head around it, achieved nothing, put it away and gave up. Two years later I've dug it all out again and watched the tutorial video provided by audacity ....utter gibberish. So two more of my life that I won't get back and I've achieved slightly less than nothing. Theyshould have waited until all of the old people had died before introducing new things.

  9. Will accept £1250. For sale is my Music Man Cutlass Bass (2016-19), gutted to let this go. This is a lovely bass which I spent a long time chasing down. It's either this of the '74 P-bass, so this has to go. You know what this is - It's a modern classic take on the P with some amazing & innovative refinements: great playable 6 bolt neck, modern large pole piece pickup, amazing build quality. Compound radius neck, cleverly designed neck join, classic but playable. It can sound classic, retro & modern powerful in equal measure! It has suffered one small ding to the side of a the fingerboard when it got knocked over on a session, of which there are two photos so you can see. Other than that there are the usual small chips on the lacquer on the headstock. I bought it new from Guitar Village in 2020. Weighs 8.6lb - so nice and light. Please check the photos for condition. Comes with original case and case candy. Will be properly packed and couriered. Can use the courier of your choice if you have a preferred one. Happy to send fully insured, or world wide, if you want to pay the extra, feel free to contact me for a quote on this. Or collection from London N8 with a cup of tea!

  10. The first boutique bass I've ever played was a Pedulla-like fretless by Dutch luthier André van der End. Every since then, I've wanted to own a bass by him, particularly with a walnut top and maple fretboard. A few years back, I bought a blue fiver by him. Didn't really get on with the sound, so I sold it. And then last week, just as I was selling two other basses, this walnut top, maple fretboard fiver turned up on a second hand website in Belgium. I had to have it. So yesterday I drove to Belgium and took it home. It's not light, but it's pretty darn awesome. Ash body, pickups and preamp by André himself, birdseye maple neck.

  14. I’m finally joining the Yamaha BB club this week - waiting on delivery of my new (to me) 1984 BB3000s so I can get my Jonathan Maron-on! Was looking at a BBP34 tbh, just fancied a decent passive PJ 4 string but I’m not massively clued up about the old Japanese ones, however this looked like a good decent deal and I think just going from YouTube videos etc it sounds like it has a bit more mojo than the BBP, I’ve always liked the pickups in these older Yamaha's too

  15. Well that was close - very nearly ordered a bass synth pedal but then realised I could get a pretty good synth sound by combining my current fuzz, octave & chorus pedals. Just spent the last couple hours upsetting my family with synthy space sounds - awesome to discover that stuff I already have can be used in a different way and I don't need to buy something new!

  17. Reduced to 1000. If no one wants it at this price I'll hang on to it 🙂 Beautiful bass that I purchased new 5 years ago though have barely touched it for a few years. It is great condition bar a scratch behind the bridge that you should be able to make out in the 3rd picture, 2 tiny marks on the underneath of the lower horn (pictured). I managed to put a small crack in the nut trying to fit too large a B string gauge (this sounds way worse than it actually is!), so strengthened it with super glue, it has never caused any issue at all especially due to the zero nut, only other negative is that the pots have become scratchy (I would presume this is due to how little they have been actuated in recent years). Spec is - Mahogany body, Eye poplar top, 2-tone Matt Red finish Set-in hard-rock maple neck, flamed maple fret board, 24 frets Bass Culture 38mm Humbuckers Delano 3-band EQ, 2x pick-up mini switches Monorail bridge, 18mm string spacing Recently had new LaBella stings fitted Includes gig bag and massive Maruszczyk leather strap I do not own decent scales so cannot weigh the bass accurately I'm afraid I built one up on the Maruszczyk configurator and it came out at 2750 euro (no trades please) I'd rather not post but it can be arranged Happy to answer any questions and happy for anyone who wants to visit Faversham to test it out.

  20. I think (but don't know) everything new was done to make it even more attractive to Fender orientated bass payers. The downsizing, the std size pus, the body without pu rings. In my opinion, you'll get the best Fender tone when playing a Fender. It's so simple 🙂 The new line does not amaze me that much. Played an incredible BBP35 at Guitar Summit two years ago, no 4 string could match that sadly. I started with a 300 back in the 80s. Went up from 1600 to 3000 then came the Hifi years with active basses. When the BB series started new with the 414 I fell in love again with the series. My main bass is 1000MA for nearly 25 years now (this bass even smashed my 3000MA) and last year I found some 424s in mint condition that are just wonderfull. I remember putting a pu ring on a beautiful 300 in candy apple red, I should have kept that (heavy) bass 🙂

  21. Yup, it's 100% standard. At the time, there were a few Warwicks in the shop (Academy of Sound, Hanley, Stoke on Trent) but no 5-string Streamers. A phone call or two by the staff in the shop secured the required spec so £1065 and 4/5 weeks later.. And here we are 24 years later. ❤️

  23. They're a couple of self-build projects from last year. The lighter one is a cheap short scale Chinese neck on a body made from an old mantle piece, and the darker one is a full self build, again with the body from an old mantle piece and the neck from old oak window ledge. Yes, they're both based on the Junior DC, as I missed out on getting one when they were on sale, and have never managed to get hold of a second hand one since.......

  25. Pre Ernie Ball - 1977 Musicman stingray B00 serial number Great condition for age - belt rash on the back (but only to be expected) varnish has cracked on the front but it just looks lovely - like it is striped I love this bass, I don't want to sell it but I'm not playing it as I'm only playing 35" scale basses these days (swapping to 34's messes up my muscle memory..) Bought from Andy Baxter bass about 10 years ago and it's all original (aside from mutes and battery clip) The Pre EB serial db drops it in the middle of 77 - but no way to confirm one way or another - just on the serials around this one Incredible sound from it - it has that classic stingray sound that only a stingray can deliver - distinctive and cuts through It was last gigged in 2019 when I lent it to Caro Emeralds bass player when an issue led to their equipment not getting to the venue (gig photo..) . This needs to be played ! Original Hard shell case included. Case has some age related marks too. £4,000 + postage (method can be agreed...) or you can come and collect it

  34. Mama's and Papa's - Dream a little dream. First band I've played with in 40 years and we only have one person who plays guitar so far, me and I'm not very good. The vocalist fancies singing the above, so I'm having to learn an open B7 Chord which would be OK, if I hadn't broken or dislocated every finger and thumb on my left hand multiple times from playing too much rugby. Oh well, it'll eventually come right, either that or surgery Rob

  38. I put a bit of time and effort into bringing my Streamer LX back to top-notch condition this week. It's had a thorough clean, a fret / hardware polish and several coat / buffs of wax plus there'll be a new set of strings on it too in the next few days. It doesn't see that much action these days as I'm nearly always on a Jazz or the Status but it's still a truly fantastic instrument in every way.

  40. Selling my Dingwall. Great condition, never gigged. Amazing colourshift colour Incudes postage in UK or we can exchange in person (meet half way) Product Description The D-Roc is Dingwall's striking offset instrument. Combining alluring vintage-style curves with their precision-engineered playability, it's a formidable modern instrument with just the right amount of rock 'n' roll mojo. Body & Neck The D-Roc features a sleek but eye-catching body design. Looks aside, it is the instrument's materials that are more key to its focused and detailed sound. The tonewood of choice for the body is Khaya, a Mahogany variety with accentuated midrange and a brighter attack. A 5-piece Maple neck coupled with a heavy-duty truss rod further complements the treble response while ensuring maximum hardiness. Dingwall manufacture has long-been exposed to extreme climate conditions, so they know a thing or two about reinforcing necks! Finally, a Pau Ferro fingerboard adds a little extra warmth and a smooth feel to boot. Multi-Scale Design A noteworthy feature of the D-Roc Custom is its multi-scale design. With a 36.25" scale on the low E string and a 34" scale on the G, the higher string tension on the lower strings gives the bass more punch and clarity where it matters most. Fanned frets allow for super-accurate intonation across the entire fingerboard, with their slanted placement suiting the natural resting position of your hand. It may look odd at first, but you'd be surprised at how easy it is to adapt to this type of neck! Hardware & Electronics The D-Roc Standard is triple-loaded with FD-3N passive pickups. The key to their punchy tone is the use of Neodymium magnets; higher output means a more aggressive sound. This lines up nicely with the tonewood combination, with plenty of midrange bite that produces a distinctly modern tone. A 4-way switch offers a surprisingly broad tonal palette. Dingwall also opted for a traditional jack plate with Switchcraft jack connection to ensure maximum reliability. Finally, slick black hardware is used throughout, with Dingwall Combustion tuners and a specially designed bridge with a custom riser system - increased adjustability and sturdiness all in one. 41. Hi everyone! Putting my Fender JP Hama Okamoto P Bass up for sale as I need to do move on some gear. Bought in the summer brand new for a run of gigs and now no longer need it, so would rather it go to a good home! It’s an incredible P Bass with its big selling point, for me at least, being that it has a Jazz Bass neck profile, so it is extremely easy to play and navigate. These basses are extremely hard to come by in the UK as they’re exclusively manufactured and sold in Japan. I even had to import it from Japan myself! The bass did actually sustain some unfortunate damage during import resulting in a crack on the rear edge of the body. Picture provided. With all the above in mind, I’m looking for £850 collected from NW London. Also happy to arrange a meet/drop off, or even courier for extra depending on location! Soft case included. Any questions, feel free to reach out!

  42. As with many things in life if you have a conceptual overview of what you are trying to do things work a bit better - no point buying a hammer thinking it is a screwdriver, or buying a collection of screwdrivers thinking they are an entire toolbox... With home recording there are quite a few different components, and you need to understand what does what before you can get anything done. Thus said the amount of different devices you can get is vast, and there is a massive difference between recording some basic tracks in Garageband (which is my recommendation for a beginner) as opposed to my friend's studio - he re-mortgaged to afford it and even rebuilt part of his house, which is one step beyond even most of us on this forum! As such I too have given up on home recording as I can't afford either the money or time to do a good enough job of it (and I have said buddy with a studio should I need it). Thus said I do like jamming along to my own creations at home, and have got surprisingly far using a digitech trio+ pedal. I am, however, gassing for a "Groovebox" next which is not quite home recording, but going in that direction with more complex backing tracks than the trio+ can manage.

  43. I'm exactly the same as you. If something doesn't work within two minutes of opening the box, I start to lose interest. I also have zero patience for troubleshooting computer problems. Having said that, I wanted to record ideas at home and realised I needed an interface so I too, bought the Focusrite Scarlett. I downloaded Reaper too, as I was advised that Audacity had limited functions for multitrack recording. The Focusrite came without a full manual but the included paperwork had a link to a step by step video of how to set it up. The whole thing took me about 10 mins and I was recording straight away. It wasn't difficult or annoying. If I can do it, so can you. Believe me.

  48. I've just ordered my first HPF. I am very happy with my current setup, an old GK RB series head into a BF 3x10. But I've had a vintage Fender Bassman 50 entirely rebuilt and modified and I want to try it at small gigs. The issue I have with the Bassman is that with my P bass with flats and the BF cab there's so much low end that I just can't get the amp up to where it needs to be. I can feel and hear the amp wasting its time trying to amplify all the lower frequencies and I think it's using up a great deal of its power doing that. It will be an interesting experiment anyway. If I end up with a giggable 50w valve head, that will be nice. I've gone for the Rafferty clone of the Fdeck HPF. There's a few weeks to wait whilst he builds it though. I'll report back when I have tried it out. Rob
