  1. Squier Mustang project bass! I have been into short scale basses for a good few years now as I am getting older and have a trapped nerve in my shoulder often using them instead of my long scales as they are lighter and give an easier reach to the lower frets, all are active, a Spector Bantam and two Sector Shorty basses so my Squier CV Mustang had remaind virtually unused. It played and sounded really good with a low action and the neck stayed reliable and in tune but I got used to the tonal variety and power that comes with active basses. As I had a pair of EMG HZ pickups and Tone Pump preamp lying around I decided on a bass project. The preamp is in a route under the pickguard, battery box on the back and jack socket moved to a plate on the side to make way for the extra knob position. Routing was done by my excellent friend Terry Goodchild and is a fabulous job, everything fitted great! The wiring is a seriously tight fit under the chome plate but it works really well, I may revisit it at some point. Changed the plastic knobs to Chrome to finish it off, fresh strings and set up properly to my liking with a seriously low action, it is a really powerfull little beast! and it sounds great! All I had to pay for was the battery box and side jack plate so a really cheap project that has given me a bass that suits me better.

  2. Was expecting a dead pub tonight but was pleasantly surprised how busy it was. Some people actually caught the train to come and see us from the next town We havent played for a few weeks so again I wasn't expecting much but we played pretty well considering. Landlord and I swapped numbers for more gigs after March. I'll be asking for a little more in the fee. Still not sure I'm enjoying flats on my Jazz. They're heavy gauge as well so my hands are aching after a 2 hour gig, may have to go back to Elixr nanowebs.. No backline, bass to pedalboard (Laney Digbeth preamp) then to desk, in ear monitor and Porter and Davies KT Platform. Passed some guy half asleep in a hedge down a country road on the way home. Felt sorry for him and turned around but when I slowed down he suddenly sprang to life and tried to get in the back of the car without saying anything. Freaked me out so I took off. Called the police when I got home, hopefully they will find him and get him home but it felt sketchy at the time. Home for cheese and toast and a glass of vino, 1.20am.

  3. Tonight's gig was brought to you by max-strength paracetamol and sudafed. I guess I must have picked up something from the great unwashed crowd at one of our gigs around NYE. I felt a bit dodgy last Thursday night and by Friday morning felt too bad for work! The cold/virus/manflu has waxed and wained over the last week, ending with an invasion of my sinuses this morning that woke me at 5am in pain. Any sane bass player would have pulled the gig. Not me! We only have a couple this month, so I dosed myself up with (legal) drugs and went for it. Not so much jigging about as normal, a bit "heady" bending down to set up and pack down, but otherwise quite an enjoyable gig. Nice pub, decent crowd, hot & sweaty. Hopefully it might have fried off a few of the unwelcome guests infesting me at the moment. I forgot to take any photos. Usual rig with just the Sire P7-5 this time for some P-bass loveliness. Solovair boots are getting to be quite comfortable now. Let's hope I wake up feeling a bit better after some of Dr Jim Beam's post-gig medicine...

  4. The next chapter in the series "Why does Owen have so many basses he does not play?". (See also https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/508122-fender-usa-5-string-jazz-in-car-nitro-relic/#comment-5399519 , https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/473005-gl-clf-research-l1000-750-us-l1000-five-string-to-you-and-me-price-drop-£1200/#comment-4877658 and https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/499125-5-string-sparkly-goodness-dingwall-d-roc-content-£1200-bassbros/ ) The G&L and the Dingwall are at Bassbross by now, but I own them and would like to get them sold. Anyway, here is something you do not see every day. I was playing Ebay Roulette putting silly offers in for things. Shockingly one of them won. I no longer do this. Suddenly I was the owner of an original USA Stingray SUB. Rubbery coating and all. The bass itself was really nice but I was not digging the coating. So I had it stripped and painted in Glitter Blue (I made that colour up). Then it was lovely. Then I saw someone on here putting Wal-alike pickups in their Bongo and figured the Bongo electrics might be available. They were. I have owned several Bongos and know exactly what they can do, and I like it. So I bought the Bongo pickups and preamp and eventually had Mr Manton route it out and plumb them in. He does lovely work. Is this a very lovely thing? Yes. Yes, it is. Am I reaching for it? Nope. I seem to have settled on 33" scales for now. So this can go and be loved more somewhere else. If you are sitting there thinking "that's an idea, I will go and buy some Bongo electronics and plumb them in to my whatever" then sorry, that is not going to happen. I have seen them come up twice in MANY (no, really) years of watching. There is no way EB will sell you these. This is your only option for this flavour of thang. The original MM Serial number is in the 3rd picture so that you can see that I am not a dodgy geezer. I was going to change the EQ knobs to make it more Stingray-alike, but I decided to leave them as it is a nod to what is going on inside this machine. It comes with a D tuner as all basses should. I will not be gutted if this does not sell, but holding on to it does not make sense.

  5. J'arrive! Eventually... And you'd be 100% correct! And you'd be 100% incorrect! Well - maybe 75%. Several brands you mention did source at least some of their instruments from Matsumoku - but the OP's bass isn't one of them. That one's a Kasuga EB-750, made by Kasuga Gakki in 1975-ish, at their own factory in Nagoya city. Of the other brands, Ibanez was made exclusively by Fujigen Gakki, Custom (a local brand from the Netherlands) sold through-neck Fakers made by Matsumoku, and *possibly* Yamaki Gakki. I've not seen a Pearl-branded Faker but the sub-brand Vorg By Pearl sourced their bolt-neck Rick copies from Matsumoku. Aria & Aria Pro II all came from Mats, and the Aspen in the pic has Grover copy tuners, which only appear on Matsumoku Fakers. Just to bang on a bit more, aside from the factories mentioned, both Chushin Gakki & Kiso Suzuki made their own versions, and it looks highly probable that the 70s manufacturers' co-op Matsumoto Gakki Seizou Kumiai may have had both through & bolt-neck examples. On top of that, there are a slew of MIJ Rick copies that don't come from any of the aforementioned sources (there are always detail differences) so must have come from Moridaira, Kawai Gakki, Terada Gakki, Iida Gakki, Daina and so on and so on. And that's without taking into account 70s & 80s Fakers from Korea, Italy, Brazil, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, and even right here in the U of K!

  6. Well... I said no gigs this month but I now have three with Bluesfire. One I hadn't got the date for, one in Cardiff both in a fortnight the other side of the guitarist's other band supporting Cardinal Black. The other is tonight at my local club standing in for a band whose singer is poorly (my other band shares a guitarist with them). Just hope word gets about tonight round as people have being asking when we are back there but not booked until September.

  7. Up for sale is my magnificent acoustic rig, in excellent condition (especially for it's age). No damage, dents or rips anywhere, all original eminence speakers. 300 watts of very loud vintage goodness. Supplied with it's original covers which obviously show signs of wear. When I purchased this from Mike (here on basschat) a couple of years ago he included a footswitch plug specific to these amps so I got bright onion to make a switch box for the channel select and EQ. The appropriate indicator lights go on and off corresponding with the footswitch gives a nice bit of control. Collection preferred, could also arrange meet up within a 30 mile radius of Daventry. I will entertain delivery options for fuel costs.

  8. This is my Yamaha BB414. I’ve modified it as a poor-mans BB3000 tribute! Gotoh tuning machines and a higher mass Yamaha bridge. I sprayed the other hardware gold as you can see. It has a lovely dark rosewood board. Unfortunately I don’t have the original knobs. It also has a few different screws attaching the tuning machines as some of the originals were stripped. The neck is in unmarked condition but the body has buckle rash and numerous signs or wear and tear. Weight - 4.1kg Sounds and plays great! Price includes UK postage and a cheapy gig-bag.

  9. So it’s been a while since anything new came into Rayman towers. So between Xmas and New Year I treated myself to a new project….. a Hohner Pro JJ bass. It was dirty, set up like a dog, terrible action and most irritatingly (after I specifically asked the seller if it all worked as it should, he told me it did, he lied), the active electronics weren’t firing on all cylinders. So, after a deep clean, a new CTS pot for the neck pup and a new trim pot for the circuit board (that was fiddly, but a relatively straightforward fix), new strings, new gold control knobs and a nice setup (lovely low action), this thing is an absolute joy to play. ‘90/91 I’m guessing, Cort factory in Korea, it’s a quality instrument. Lovely frets, very comfortable and I think it looks awesome. It’s easily as good as anything sub 1K new, easily. Very impressed indeed. A really really great bass, and it sounds killer too, massive dubby low end and sparkly highs, what else do you want? My plan was to flip it on, but I dunno, I think I’ll keep it for now. I haven’t put it down since it was finished.

  10. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately the broken speaker was distorting even when it was out of the cab, whereas the working one was fine. I managed to get a replacement speaker from Barefaced last week, so all is well now!

  11. Guys, stop racking your brains for ways to thicken up your sound in a solo. If the bass sounds thin in a solo then it'll sound thin for the rest of the song, and that's bad. Get a tone that works for the whole song, from the intro to the coda. If you think you have to fill in all the "holes" you're thinking is wrong. When a solo starts you stay locked with the drummer. Whatever the lead instruments are doing is irrelevant to you, and if they are having sound problems it's not your job to fill in. You can't anyway, you're on the wrong instrument. A good solo is about dynamics so many guitarists will drop out for a bar or two at the start. The solo will then build. If the bass or drums start filling in the gaps there are no dynamics and the whole section is a mess. If your bass line is good for the verse then it's good for the solo.

  12. Our church verse for the year, Isaiah 43:18: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" That's going to be my excuse for any "novel" notes on Sunday morning which weren't there at the practice or on the chord chart. I shall call it "Isaiah Jazz" 😎

  13. For sale Epiphone Jack Casady in very good condition. Nice tone and killer look but I don’t use it much as I play Jazz/Jaguar basses with narrow necks while this one although quite comfortable yet more P-bass nut width. Got GAS for something else so this one needs to go.. Comes with the original hard case.

  14. Gave my " Leader" 90's bass a cleanup and checkup today. Couldn't find anything on the internet anymore, so "posting time" (well over 30 years old). It is a bass from a Dutch builder, v.d.Hoeven from 's-Hertogenbosch. The small, somewhat "strange" body contains hollow resonance spaces and is therefore very light. While playing, the headstock could feel to tip over a little bit, but nothing serious. Shaller hardware, EMG pickup and preamp. Neck Thru:maple/Boire Body: Boire Fingerboard: Ebony it is not to everyone's taste, but plays easily and has a great sound. The basses where build as i know for a short time (end 80's begin 90's).

  17. 🤫 Once again: Clipped wave forms are harmful for tweeters, as they can increase the power in the high frequencies well above what what the tweeter normally receives. But no matter how hard the clipping the power will never exceed what the woofer normally receives in the lows. That's the science, and the science always works, whether you understand it or not. As to blowing a 100w speaker with a 50w amp, for instance, yes, you can. Most 50w amps can deliver transients of 6dB above rated power, and that's means 200 watts. Is the amp clipping? Sure. Does the clipping cause damage? No. Over powering does. BTW, a distortion pedal creates clipping, far more clipping than any amp is capable of creating. If clipped wave forms hurt woofers distortion pedals would not exist. Neither would synthesizers.

  19. Now the sound is in the same ballpark as the Bantam, really thick bass though and zingy high end, the Bantam has an active emg system and the pickup blend works really well, the Mustang has two volume controls which act more like a Jazz Bass, if you turn one down a little you get pretty much the other pickup on it's own. It does sound huge....better than I was expecting!

  21. I did my engineering apprenticeship from ‘68 and engineering adopted the SI system way before then. Of course I learnt the Imperial system at school so like you, became adept at mentally transposing back and forward between the two systems. However the SI system is scientifically derived system, rather than one based on the arbitrary size of the monarch’s extremities.

  22. For sale my Japanese ‘62 reissue Jazz Bass in Olympic White. Made in 2004/5 according to the serial number (I had it for 10 years now). Great condition for a 20 years old bass with just a couple of small marks. I’ve upgraded it with Nordstrand NJ4 (60s era / 7.25” radius) pickups (best pups known to mankind 🤪) which immensely improved the sound. I’ve also installed John East J-Retro preamp. Those upgrades are reflected in the price. The original control plate included. If you’re not a fan of active preamps I’m happy to reinstall the original plate and lower the overall price by £100. I’m based in London, E5

  24. Amazing amp with stacks of headroom. This has been my backup amp for a couple of years but happily hasn't been needed. I have gigged it a few times and its a mighty powerful little dude of an amp. They have a known issue in that the background light doesn't work occasionally and this one does occasionally but not a noticeably bad thing. Aesthetically the case is has some scratches and isnt perfect so the price reflects that. Comes with a GB branded soft carry case and original packaging What they say... The Streamliner™ 900 bass amplifier has been manufactured to the highest degree of engineering standards and practices, combining our patented circuitry in a unique blend of classic and leading-edge technologies. This compact design blends a simple, intuitive and versatile high voltage, 3 tube, 6 stage classic style analog preamp with an internationally proven high performance Class D power amplifier. This Class D amplifier and SMPS module is enhanced with our PATENTED P.H.A.T. 25. Just got back from a gig. This was a party in honour of a local jazz musician who died just before Christmas (made it to 90, and this would have been his birthday). He was a friend of our BL, so we volunteered to entertain. Good gig - the audience were very appreciative and enjoyed the material (inc. dancing at the end). The highlight for me was some recitation over musical accompaniment of prose reflecting the deceased's other hobby of ancient archaeology. The result resembled an extended jazz version of the Spinal Tap Stonehenge intro, with soprano sax noodling. Nice!

  26. With less than 300w a 400rb has no damn right to be so fine sounding and so damn loud. i did read on a Reddit post a long time ago that someone had a 1001rb which is supposed to be 700w in 4ohms and he took it to an amp tech to get it checked out when he got it and the tech measured 1000w into 8ohms (found it see screenshot!). I honestly can’t see me using any other amp now.

  27. First show for BandKamp, something of a loose coalition of musos. We rehearse an album, gig it once and only once, and then move on, no matter how good (or bad) it was. We're starting with the glorious Blonde on Blonde, timed for the Chalomet movie opening the same weekend. 4.00 Sunday afternoon slot feels really nice 👍

  29. Well, I play nothing but 5 string. When I was searching for "that bass" I tried a lot. More brands and models than I care to remember or list. I live within a reasonable driving distance of "Bass Central". They have pretty much everything. Even a full line of Alembics and Dingwalls. So, between here and there I compared. And what I found is this. Ever heard the term, it's all in the fingers? It really is. If your hands don't like it, it's the wrong one. It has to fit you. If it fits, the B string will be perfect. Because it fits your fingers. All my 5 strings have a perfect B string. So, what worked for me? American Fenders. I really wanted to love another brand. Bought and sold 2 Lulls because they couldn't compare in sound or feel. But I have started a torrid love affair with 3 G&Ls. Picked up a USA L2500. Loved it so much I went hunting for a M2500. Found 2 on the internet. 1 tribute. 1 USA. I grabbed both. I love em both, but the USA M2500 is a beast. And the poster that said 35" scale wasn't the "be all, end all". Was right! I don't get along with 35" scale. Why? I wish I knew. Moral of the story. Play as many different 5's as you can. If you can't find one on a shelve, make use of return policies and buy online. I have had zero issues with online bass shopping. ZERO! Plenty of horror stories out there. But I have had nothing but great luck. Probably because don't buy used. I've only bought used twice. Both my M2500s are used. But in new condition. I was shocked when I received them. But gift horse and all, I considered myself lucky. I bought 2 lottery tickets afterwards. I guess I blew all my luck on those G&Ls.

  30. No, @chris_b is right. I've mainly played in rock bands with just one guitar over the years and you just develop a feel over the years on how to fill things out. First of all you need the right tone and attack, but being in a three piece can give you the opportunity to play a bit busier at times (particularly under solos), to work on your note lengths, you might throw in a few octaves or sometimes you just embrace the spaces in the music (someone mentioned Robin Trower above, which is a pretty good example). However, you are never going sound the same as if you have a rhythm guitar or Hammond or whatever playing, but a three piece can still sound great! I'm playing in a pretty busy Zep tribute these days and I certainly don't use any effects or change my EQ every time there is a guitar solo! You just find a way to make it work.

It arrived today and made adjusting the truss rod easy. I set the relief by eye, as suggested and will measure it shortly. I just need to increase the string height a tad and it will be great.

  43. Just grabbed this from Facebook marketplace at a very reasonable price, the discontinued Yamaha Nathan East parametric eq box. Not truly an effect pedal as its always on, but i thought it fitted here best. Plans are to re home in a more standard pedal sized box with both a true bypass footswitch and a 9v supply socket (currently battery only). This is the third one of these I’ve owned over the years but the intention is that this one is a keeper.

  46. Assembled this bass during the quarantine era: Aluminati aluminum bass neck, patterned graphite fretboard, Sperzel locking tuners, stainless frets, 34" scale. Custom jazz bass style body, two passive EMG Jazz Bass pickups. I found the wooden knobs and the control panel cover via a luthier's liquidation site. Aluminati is based in North Carolina, USA, and makes aluminum necks and full instruments.
