Well not a huge audience last night, about 35, but most of them came to see us and quite a few were local musicians. Had some of our best feedback ever 'the dog's bollocks' was one memorable judgement. We were very relaxed and played pretty loosely, Alex changed a few arrangements on the fly and I was in the mood for a bit of improvising. A bass player said 'I liked your solo on Bright Lights' - it wasn’t a solo, I just couldn't remember the (very simple) bass riff...15 points

We had an acoustic show case at The Cause in Chippenham. A truly fabulous space. Amazing sound guy who was genuinely interested in the bands, an audience who came to listen and the promoter even made us pizza! We played mainly original material, ending on a token cover. I played mainly mandocello, some guitar and a bit of mandolin at the end (so no bass yet in 2025). The other two acts were a folk singer and a fun time covers band, so a nice mix. The benchmark for which I will base other 2025 shows.14 points

Just got back from a gig. This was a party in honour of a local jazz musician who died just before Christmas (made it to 90, and this would have been his birthday). He was a friend of our BL, so we volunteered to entertain. Good gig - the audience were very appreciative and enjoyed the material (inc. dancing at the end). The highlight for me was some recitation over musical accompaniment of prose reflecting the deceased's other hobby of ancient archaeology. The result resembled an extended jazz version of the Spinal Tap Stonehenge intro, with soprano sax noodling. Nice!13 points

The whole live concert is pretty amazing. I always sort of got him but never really musically understood him because I don't like fusion so I got a little bored. But his playing on this and the way he outlines the chords and the notes he plays are just magic. You can hear his musical influences with the notes he chooses imo.. the more I listen the more mind bending his playing gets.9 points

The next chapter in the series "Why does Owen have so many basses he does not play?". (See also https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/508122-fender-usa-5-string-jazz-in-car-nitro-relic/#comment-5399519 , https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/473005-gl-clf-research-l1000-750-us-l1000-five-string-to-you-and-me-price-drop-£1200/#comment-4877658 and https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/499125-5-string-sparkly-goodness-dingwall-d-roc-content-£1200-bassbros/ ) The G&L and the Dingwall are at Bassbross by now, but I own them and would like to get them sold. Anyway, here is something you do not see every day. I was playing Ebay Roulette putting silly offers in for things. Shockingly one of them won. I no longer do this. Suddenly I was the owner of an original USA Stingray SUB. Rubbery coating and all. The bass itself was really nice but I was not digging the coating. So I had it stripped and painted in Glitter Blue (I made that colour up). Then it was lovely. Then I saw someone on here putting Wal-alike pickups in their Bongo and figured the Bongo electrics might be available. They were. I have owned several Bongos and know exactly what they can do, and I like it. So I bought the Bongo pickups and preamp and eventually had Mr Manton route it out and plumb them in. He does lovely work. Is this a very lovely thing? Yes. Yes, it is. Am I reaching for it? Nope. I seem to have settled on 33" scales for now. So this can go and be loved more somewhere else. If you are sitting there thinking "that's an idea, I will go and buy some Bongo electronics and plumb them in to my whatever" then sorry, that is not going to happen. I have seen them come up twice in MANY (no, really) years of watching. There is no way EB will sell you these. This is your only option for this flavour of thang. The original MM Serial number is in the 3rd picture so that you can see that I am not a dodgy geezer. I was going to change the EQ knobs to make it more Stingray-alike, but I decided to leave them as it is a nod to what is going on inside this machine. It comes with a D tuner as all basses should. I will not be gutted if this does not sell, but holding on to it does not make sense.8 points

Tell a lie... this is the headless 6er I had. Bought it from a Cash Converters of all places for an absolute steal, though it was in a bit of a state. I think @ambient took this off me in trade years back and did the work to get it back to it's former glory.7 points

My "practice" amp...one that you won't see all that often...and yes, it does look like your Grandma's radio sans the dial... You're looking at a circa '64 Hagstrom Bass 210 valve head, pushing out something like 8W. Original condition apart from the missing insignia and a fuse housing that someone has toyed around with. Amazing little amp, in all seriousness. I've got several other amps, but this is the only one that gets turned on on regular basis.6 points

My definition is that someone who crafts (or makes) an instrument from bare wood (but may attach bought-in shinyware & electrics) is a luthier . There's also the term "tech" used; I'd define that as someone who does professional-grade setups and repairs. In contrast, someone who builds (or assembles) an instrument from pre-made parts (ie. neck & body) isn't; I'd probably call them builders(?). I've had great results putting together instruments from parts, but my woodworking skills are pretty abysmal, so I could probably never be a luthier.5 points
-
To be very clear: somebody assembling parts IS NOT a luthier, he has to craft them, neither is the guy only changing strings and tuning (when he can) an instrument. There are so many people pretending to be luthiers and who are just wallet emptiers.5 points

First show for BandKamp, something of a loose coalition of musos. We rehearse an album, gig it once and only once, and then move on, no matter how good (or bad) it was. We're starting with the glorious Blonde on Blonde, timed for the Chalomet movie opening the same weekend. 4.00 Sunday afternoon slot feels really nice 👍5 points

For sale Epiphone Jack Casady in very good condition. Nice tone and killer look but I don’t use it much as I play Jazz/Jaguar basses with narrow necks while this one although quite comfortable yet more P-bass nut width. Got GAS for something else so this one needs to go.. Comes with the original hard case.4 points

For sale my Japanese ‘62 reissue Jazz Bass in Olympic White. Made in 2004/5 according to the serial number (I had it for 10 years now). Great condition for a 20 years old bass with just a couple of small marks. I’ve upgraded it with Nordstrand NJ4 (60s era / 7.25” radius) pickups (best pups known to mankind 🤪) which immensely improved the sound. I’ve also installed John East J-Retro preamp. Those upgrades are reflected in the price. The original control plate included. If you’re not a fan of active preamps I’m happy to reinstall the original plate and lower the overall price by £100. I’m based in London, E54 points

Personally, I would just sand it. You've had it for a few years now so I would assume that you've got no plans to sell it, so sand away. If you ever want to sell it then you can fork out for a refinish.4 points

Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass V, with sunburst finish and maple fretboard This is a mid 2000s model with the humbucker in the bridge. 18v preamp. Knobs are Volume, pickup blend, 2 band EQ using the stacked pots and a Mid boost/cut. Weight according to my bathroom scales is 4.5kg. has a slightly smaller body than a regular P bass and is very well balanced so the weight is much more comfortable than you would think! Comes with a Fender hard case as pictured. I don't have the key to the case however. Some cosmetic marks on the body, and around the Truss rod adjustment on the pickguard as pictured. Also one of the string ferrules at the back disappeared at some point. I have attached as many pictures as I could of any imperfections but feel free to ask if I have missed something out Sounds like an active P bass! The bridge pickup has more of a J sound than a humbucker and it blends with the split pickup really nicely. B string is fantastic! As per the Stingray I previously sold, this is for sale as the owner, my uncle, passed away and wanted his instruments to continue to be played. I have kept two from his collection but I really can't justify having all of them! There will be more coming up for sale soon. Collection preferred, but I could meet part way depending on distance, I'm based in Northamptonshire. Thanks for looking!3 points

Am I the only one who can't cope with pedals being mounted sideways for purely aesthetic reasons?3 points

So after quite a lot of fiddling, I've now 'finished' two pedalboards. I've reduced the number of screws, tidied up the design, raised the back two rows of the four row pedalboard, made sure the two row compact pedalboard (which is a different design) has enough space under for power supplies. I no longer need tap-on extrusion ends so it looks an awful lot nicer. The red one is 400mm wide and the white is 300mm. I'm quite pleased with the white version, didn't think it would be so good. There is no Velcro on the white one yet. Both can easily take me standing on them. I suspect they could take two of me as there's no flex at all. This has the last two rows 25mm higher. This avoids having to make a riser for the pedals. If anybody is interested in having one made to measure, please let me know. Thanks Rob3 points

This is where Jaco is at his best, listening to the others and playing music. Well maybe his solo part is not mandatory here, but as Joni Mitchell said, it was the price to pay. The two studio albums are excellent too: Hejira and Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. You can also try listening to Bright Size Life, with Pat Metheny too, where Jaco was not on the booze and dope at all.3 points

When I started playing guitar aged 16 I wanted a Fender Jaguar, probably because of Kurt Cobain, Brian Molko and John Frusciante. Then I took to playing bass and forgot about them, until Fender released the bass version in 2006, but I couldn't afford one at the time. And I didn't really like the red with matching headstock which was the only one I ever saw come up for sale. Early last year I hunted down an Olympic white 2015 US version, and it's been my favourite bass since. This week I saw a MIJ version for sale, I had to have it, and I picked it up today! 2008, never giggled, in great condition. Now I have twins, with the added benefit of being able to choose between the P and the J sound!3 points

Well... I said no gigs this month but I now have three with Bluesfire. One I hadn't got the date for, one in Cardiff both in a fortnight the other side of the guitarist's other band supporting Cardinal Black. The other is tonight at my local club standing in for a band whose singer is poorly (my other band shares a guitarist with them). Just hope word gets about tonight round as people have being asking when we are back there but not booked until September.3 points

A D-tuner on a 5 string?! Doen't that make it an A-tuner? Either way, you're an absolute lunatic. In all seriousosity, that's a lovely Bass - all the good bits of a Bongo without the (let's be charitable and call them 'divisive') looks. Good job it doesn't have a maple neck, othersise I'd be pillaging my rainy day fund. GLWTS! Edit: 100 extra points for 'BongRay'3 points
