Well, that's me crashed out of gear abstinence for this year and it's time for my full confession (although I'm 1 in, 1 out for the year so far, so could be worse). But I have a good excuse - this bass has been living rent-free in my head for nearly 12 years* and I finally snagged one in the finish I wanted. Black and silver ones pop up more often but I've only seen the purpleburst available two or three times in all these dozen years, so seeing as I'm not getting any younger, I decided a bit of carpe diem was in order. It's a three pickup, Les Paul shaped bass. It has three Greco T-bird-a-like pickups and three volume controls. That's it. Hardware is good quality - a Hipshot B style bridge and Gotoh tuners. It's had a life, there are some dings and scuffs in it but it's taken a polish well, the pickups have buffed up nicely and the fretboard enjoyed a drink of lemon oil very much. Lovely, dark rosewood board, yum. S'pose you'll be wanting some pics... It sounds great - I had a blast through my TC Electronic BH250 into headphones and it's got a lot of mid poke about it - might have to boost my mids a bit less when I'm playing this guy! Using the different pickups in different combinations makes noticeable changes to the tone, but it's not quite the same as having a tone knob - I might mod it but I'm not in a hurry. * TWELVE BLOODY YEARS - https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/210350-sorted-greco-3-pickup-les-paul-bass/15 points

I placed this order quite some time ago, so long ago in fact that I don’t even have the original email chain with all of the details on it. I did ask Jon to ping the spec back to me so I can share it with everyone, but this beauty arrived today. It’s not the first lavish spec Shuker I’ve owned, so I know how good his work is, but this is quite something. The preamp/pickup combo is fierce, a really biting tone. Soon as I get Jon to send the spec back to me I’ll share!12 points

I think there's just a weird sense of entitlement around free shipping. Places like Anderton's and GAK can offer free shipping because of the volume of stuff they shift allowing them to get better rates with DPD et al. The minimum order is to make sure they are still profitable; because of the volume of sales they just need to be a little bit profitable and rely on huge volume to stay afloat. Somewhere like BD (and I don't pretend to know their numbers) I imagine it doesn't make sense to offer free shipping as it would just eat into their (again, not claiming to know, just a guess) fairly small profits12 points

Same four singers - two brothers do the Everlys, one older guy does Buddy Holly, and another does Jerry Lee Lewis with all the stunt piano stuff. Add to all that the Bass and Drums and you have a nice regular six piece for a combined Live Show. (Players typically come from all over the country - Brothers and myself come from Derbyshire, Buddy from Norwich, Jerry from Ross-on-Wye and drummer from Milton Keynes!) Case of the best players for the job! I'm a classical Double Bass player by trade, so I could use upright, but I use Fender Jazzes for these jobs (even though the Jazz wasn't technically born until 1960!) The "Headless" part comes from one of my two Status basses and a Cort Space Bass 5 that I use on other jobs.9 points

I have been accumulating these pedals for a while and then got a Nano for my birthday which meant I could actually build the board! Then in a bout of 'small world syndrome' Origin themselves posted this pic of theirs yesterday LOL6 points

Belated recognition of some superb customer service by Mark, Ash and Marcus (they were all involved at one point or another): I bought an NS Design WAV4 Radius headless bass from them before Christmas, only for the preamp board to blow the first time I connected to my amp. BD not only arranged speedy delivery of a replacement board and paid for its fitting, but Mark also offered half price on a set of LaBella flats as a compensation for the faffing about. So far, so good, but I asked for a set of medium scale TIs instead (for another bass). The next day, a package arrived containing both the TIs and a set of long scale LaBella. My contribution was just £24.50 for two sets of premium quality flats. Now that's customer service! And, by the way, their prices consistently and significantly undercut those of Strings Direct!6 points

Hi Martyn, Ash here from Bass Direct. We appreciate your comments and honesty about your experience. We’re really sorry to hear you felt that way—it’s never our intention to send out an instrument in less-than-great shape, and we definitely wouldn’t set something up badly on purpose. We don’t remember hearing from you directly, but we’ll check first thing tomorrow to see if there’s anything in our system. If you ever have any concerns, reaching out to us directly is the best way to get things sorted quickly—we’re always happy to help! Regarding the Dingwall, we provided the info we had at the time. Based on our stock flow, we’d assume it’s a 2024 model, but we can double-check if that’s important to you. Dingwalls are great for low action thanks to their even string tension. As for returns, we don’t see many, and we don’t recall ever having this model come back, but we can check if needed. We understand that the £15 delivery charge might seem a bit off on a high-ticket item, but it’s there to ensure safe and secure shipping, and it’s only what it costs us to ship the item to you. We’ll check the emails in the morning, but if there’s anything else we can help with in the meantime, just let us know! Best, Ash6 points

Fantastic condition 2nd Gen Sire V7 5 string in stunning metallic Burgundy, originally bought from Andertons, now surplus to requirements as have just purchased something else. Looks absolutely gorgeous and used mainly for home and studio. There are just the tiniest of scratches to the top coat near the string thru holes on the back which you will find hard to see and a slight scuff near the jack socket. Just being up front. Sounds and works as it should and great value at this price. I have an older but decent soft case to go with it. You are welcome to try it out in Poole, Dorset or could possibly do a meet up. Many thanks for looking. Sire blurb: PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Sire have made serious waves in the bass market in recent years and have rightfully earned massive praise for their all-encompassing range. Their collaboration with world-renowned jazz and funk bassist Marcus Miller has produced a range of exceptionally high-quality instruments that far exceed their price point. We here at Andertons believe that Sire are the best bass brand we have seen in the last twenty years! That’s a bold statement for sure, but you know a product is good when all the staff own one! Unlike a lot of other guitar companies that outsource their work, Sire own the factory in which their basses are built. This means cheaper production and full control over the quality of the instruments from start to finish. It goes without saying that we QC check each and every Sire bass that comes through our doors, but we are always blown away by how little tweaking is required because they’re always set up so well from the factory! The Sire Marcus Miller V7 2nd Generation sits in the middle of the V Series. Its versatility makes it a great option for an array of different techniques, genres and playing styles. At this price point, its build quality is unrivalled too. A one-piece, Canadian Hard Maple neck offers excellent stability, while simultaneously enhancing tonal sustain and reducing vibration loss. Its comfortable too, thanks to the rolled fingerboard edges and 9.5" fingerboard radius. Whether you're just starting out, or you're an experienced player, you won’t want to put the V7 down! At the heart of the V7 is a set of signature Marcus Miller Super-J Revolution pickups, which are made using American plain enamel coils. Drawing inspiration from ‘60s J-Bass pickup spacing, these pickups have a clear, defined sound with plenty of thump! An onboard 3-band EQ has also been thrown into the mix, giving you complete control over your sound, with both passive and active settings available. Key Features Rolled Fingerboard Edges – Typically only found on high-end basses, rolled fingerboard edges enhance the overall comfort and playability of the neck and make it easier to play. What’s not to like?! Marcus Miller Heritage-3 Preamp – An onboard 3-band EQ with active and passive settings puts plenty of tone tweaking options at your fingertips. Marcus Miller Super-J Revolution Pickups – This signature set of pickups is preferred by Marcus Miller himself, offering up a host of great bass tones for a range of playing styles and genres. J-Bass Body – This iconic, tried and tested body shape is incredibly comfortable to play. Body contours allow the bass to sit comfortably against your body when playing either standing up or seated. Marcus Miller Modern-S Bridge – This classic bridge set up ensures optimal intonation and tuning stability, whilst maximising the transfer of sound energy to the pickups.5 points

But the problem with US isolationist tendencies is that since the end of WW2 it hasn't't been even remotely so. The US sticks its oar in all over the world when it suits them to do so and have military bases in Europe and elsewhere in the world. If the US wants to be isolationist that's fine, but they need to stick within their own borders and leave the rest of us alone.5 points

That's a rather strange statement. For a start, every country in the EU has its own government (despite what the Brexity types would have you believe) and how does a democratically elected government leave people who live in this 'small village', but presumably had the opportunity to vote in an election, disenfranchised? The current situation does make one thing abundantly clear (as if it wasn't before) - the European democracies need to act strategically together in things like defence, otherwise they are vulnerable to the really big powers and just too small to stand up to them on their own.5 points

I very much sympathise with ordinary working Americans who will bear the brunt of this situation. I do agree with Trump that the US deficit is deeply concerning and needs to be addressed. I also take his point about foreign wars and US aid. What I totally disagree about is the timing and the complete failure to understand or acknowledge that under Biden the USA did very well compared to the majority of major economies and recovered from Covid quickly with a booming economy and stock market. Trump is steadily dismantling the foundations of this economic strength during a very volatile geopolitical period. It’s a huge gamble and the inflows of gold and the rise in the price of gold makes me think that the billionaires he represents know that the GOP are likely to cause an inflationary spike and probable recession. I heard a decent discussion recently that we are entering the politics and economics of aggression. The politics of compassion started after WW2 and proved to be the biggest rise in social mobility and economic growth in history. It came to an end under Thatcher and Reagan and the policitics of indifference began. Every man for himself competing for scarce resources with limited help or sympathy for the weak. Welcome to the politics of aggression where the weak are intentionally kicked aside as deliberate policy (rather than collateral damage) by the powerful.4 points

Hey all, This is the original prototype for the production Knightfall 66 pedal, which I ordered as a custom order prior to the design (mainly controls) being slightly tweaked, and put into production. Drop me a PM and I can show you more info about how it was born. So this is a two-channel Knightfall 66, with global controls for blend, bass (low) and High (treble), then per-channel controls for gain and volume. Left switch is for switching between channels, right switch is for on/bypass. The knobs have been changed by me shortly after I received the pedal so that each channel (blue/red) relates to the LED colour for the A/B foot switch. In addition (I don’t believe the production Knightfall 66’s had this), there are multiple diode options available per channel. The interior diode clipping switch (see image) is numbered 1-10, with the options as follows: 1: Ch2 - MOSFET 2: Ch2 - LED 3: Ch2 - Ge 4: Ch2 - 1N4001 5: Ch2 - Si 6: Ch1 - Si 7: Ch1 - 1N4001 8: Ch1 - Ge 9: Ch1 - LED 10: Ch1 - MOSFET There is also a trimmer inside the pedal, this controls the maximum clean volume when the pedal is engaged. The treble is rolled off the clean channel above around 3kHz to allow for better integration with the distortion, so you may feel you want to bump the clean volume up if there's a perceived volume drop. With regards the external control, the Low (Bass) knob adjusts the corner frequency of the first opamp stage, and as a result adjusts how much low-end will be clipped. To the left is tight and thin, and as you roll it round to the right you will loosen things up and saturate more bass. All the way to the right and you're in fuzz territory. I have found between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock yields the most usable results, though this varies with taste and the position of the blend knob. All the other controls are as per the standard Knightfall (v1): High (Treble) is a passive adjustable LPF, with "blanket over your cab" setting at the left, all the way round to "ice pick in my ear" on the right. Gain and Volume are obviously self-explanatory. You'll get different levels with the different diodes (Ge and LED being the opposite ends of the spectrum in this regard) Cash is king for this rarity, however would consider a Sire P5-5 in part exchange pending the colour, white being the preference. Cheers Si Cheers Si3 points

This. Putin's ships are already mapping the under sea cables that carry the internet, phone lines and much of the West's intelligence traffic. The aim is obviously to "blind" us and delay any response prior to his next big "push", whenever that will be. He's also had a couple of test runs!!3 points

Having been dealing with Bass Direct for many years I have to say that I have complete confidence in them. Even with items that I have returned the experience has been extremely pleasant professional and civil. Equally in terms of packaging costs, all items that have been sent to me have been extremely well packed and basses have been in very sturdy bass specific boxes with lots of packaging. They have also been delivered on a next day service. So, no complaints from me3 points

Interesting, because that's not the impression I got at all. I'm half German so I spent a lot of time in Germany staying with relations and friends during the 60s and 70s. Certainly in the 70s when I was older and more politically aware the East/West Germany situation was on the German news almost every night (in a similar way to how Northern Ireland situation was being covered in the UK) and all the Germans I knew who were very middle-of-the-road politically were pro reunification. That may have changed once the Berlin Wall came down and the reality of the situation hit them, but whilst it was still just a dream reunification was always the goal for all those I knew.3 points

I got this at the weekend that I absolutely love to bits, and just wanted to share. A huge thank you to @walshy for his patience and good nature over the past weeks, as I’ve bombarded him with various questions, requests for excruciatingly detailed dimensions and pics galore. “Walshy, if the neck was an 80s pop act, who would it be? Which discontinued item of confectionery is the bass most like?” Prefab Sprout, and a Texan Bar, since you ask! I’ve been after a ‘68 to ‘73 period P Bass for a while now. I tried some lovely basses, but they weren’t quite for me, as I was after a specific neck profile. As soon as I picked this up I knew it was what I was after. Virginia Plain, Metal Guru, In a Broken Dream, All The Young Dudes, Ernie (the fastest milkman in the west), and this bass: 1972 was a good year…3 points

Well folks, that's me bowing out. I have just taken delivery of a bass which has been living rent-free in my head for about 12 years. A Greco LGB-700, three pickup. More pics later, but it needs a bloody good clean, new strings and a setup. There will be mucho bass fettling tonight. And in case you're wondering about how I know about the 12 year thing...3 points

The time has come to sell this wonderful instrument. I love almost everything about it, but the posture required, sitting and standing, is causing me pain, and I've not been able to get around that. As per the title, it's a BSX Allegro 4 string in tobacco burst. If you're interested, you'll likely know all about them (their website is old fashioned but informative). It has an acoustic chamber, with f-holes, and the unplugged volume is just right for quiet practice. The preamp is very good indeed. Bartolini, 3 band, developed specifically for this instrument. Easy to produce a very natural sounding warm tone. The bridge is fixed, but the neck is adjustable! Really simple and quick to alter the action (one screw to hand turn) Condition is good. It has some scuffs to the headstock, the top bout (where the neck meets the body) has a 'milky' sheen to it. Sunlight fading? Not sure, but it's cosmetic only. The picture shows a line that looks like a crack, but absolutely isn't. It's just where two timbers meet). Some very minor marks here and there, but all round good nick. The rubber endstop is worn through, it's the metal endstop that contacts the floor. Strings: the A,D, and G strings are Spirocore Weichs, can't remember what the E is, but it's nearly as good as the Spirocores, which are just wonderful, hugely expressive. I've put dots on the side of the neck, as you can see (but nobody else) There is a BSX bag that comes with it. Good for carrying, but doesn't offer too much protection. Also a cheap French bow. I won't post this, but happy to host potential buyers, also happy to travel halfway to meet, depending on where... Thanks for reading. Happy to fill in any missing info on request... Pics:2 points

Trickfish Bullhead .5K head Tr208 Cab Tr112 Cab This will almost certainly be a mistake but I've got my eye on something and need the funds... This is a killer set up. The head is very loud, and very clean and the EQ is particularly good. It's difficult to make it sound bad. Either cab by it's self is plenty loud enough for most gigs but the two together are excellent. I saw someone online compare it to running through a Neve 1073 and a big pair of expensive studio monitors and it's not far off! (I'm talking my self out of it) There are some signs of ware but nothing that ruins the aesthetic too much. It's all in the pictures. Collection only.2 points

A 2018 professional classic colour combo (I looked for a while for one and this is by far the best I found) with excellent hard case all the candy, great condition, nice dark board, plays beautifully with recent deep talking flats. I have the original white pickguard (I’ve fitted a north-west tort guard which isn’t a great fit tbh but it makes the perfect colour combo) imho Trade wise im looking for a 2eq natural/maple ONLY (classic ok but not Pre-EB) with cash from me, can travel. Thanks all in advance. NOW £9502 points

tbf that pie chart could also apply to drummers. The band did an acoustic gig on Sunday where I play guitar, no very well I might add, and a woman came up gave me a hug and kissed me on the neck, trouble was we were half way through a song and I made a right pig's ear of the rest of it. Never happens when I play bass, perhaps as well really 😂2 points

It should be remembered that America wasn't always the superpower it is today. It only became so after the great European powers bankrupted and tore themselves apart following two world wars, caused by tensions that went back more than a hundred years. Following WW2, it seemed likely that most of Western & Southern Europe could fall to communism, leading America to intervene to rebuild the major European economies (including that of the UK) and to guarantee their safety with military assistance. The price for this was that the dollar was to become the reserve currency for the free world. This is what made the USA the dominant superpower, along with Europe being beholden / dependant on them for their safety. The fall of communism has led to the USA losing interest in Europe. With hindsight, Europe should have been pivoting away from America around the turn of the century and asserting its independence economically, politically and militarily. But there was loads of money to be made and no one on either side of the Atlantic wanted to rock the boat too much. The unfortunate thing is that Europe is now being forced to do so by an America that is showing signs of becoming a rogue state, when there is no money around anymore!2 points

It's kind of like Sunk Cost Fallacy. Take my SRMS mentioned just earlier. £1000 retail + £600 mods/upgrades. Seller calculates used price based on £1k + £600 = £1600 (what he paid) then used price calculated @ 65% = £1k. Because "it owes me £600" or £400 depreciated. Realistically, it's a £600-700 bass on the used market. £500 trade-in.2 points
