  1. First two of four gigs for me this week. Tuesday afternoon I played with our duo at a ‘retirement village’ near Hull, the first time we’ve done anything like this. It is a purpose built complex for people 55 and over, with many facilities on site. They have a monthly lunch in an Italian restaurant that features varied sorts of musical entertainment. The guy who booked us saw my guitarist mate playing in a jazz club a few years ago, so we weren’t sure if it was that sort of stuff they wanted to hear. Fortunately ( for me in particular!) they were after us doing our requests thing, and did we get some varied ones - from Django Reinhardt, Tom Waits and James Taylor through to Deep Purple and Led Zep! Always try not to underestimate audiences like this, so we’re mostly ready for them now. The gig went well, with a nice meal before we started too. We’ve been offered another gig later in the year, and the restaurant manager wants us for a private booking in summer so all good. Thursday evening we played at my local pub just down the road. Again, request night format with a fair spread of stuff. Some wag asked for ‘Sir Duke’ and we duly obliged - glad I hadn’t availed myself of the free beers on offer before that one. As we were packing down we got offered a gig for this afternoon at a 21st birthday party near York. We’ve accepted it, but I will have to get on a flyer afterwards as I have a gig with the blues band straight afterwards at Hornsea over on the east coast. Been a while since I’ve done two gigs in one day, so hope my fingers last out.

  2. Weird one last night with Nine Lives at the Balaclava in Fraserburgh. When we went in, the place was reasonably busy. Started off OK, but then it went through waves of being busy then dead, then busy again, like groups of people were coming in for a couple of drinks then bogging off, but repeatedly. Very strange! Also a drunk guy who was shouting very loud "encouragement" at us, including one time when he yelled out "YEAH, BABY!" which sounded like he was possessed by Austin Powers which nearly had me corpsing. At the end we were playing to one table of folks who came in super late, like 2 songs before the end. They were enthusiastic, so we played a couple of extra songs for them, and even had one of them up with us for a sing song (because you can have fun like that when it's quiet). On the plus side, we added three new songs to the setlist and they all went pretty well, both in the playing and in the audience reaction, so that's good. As for gear, it was the double, triple threat of the Reverend Triad followed by the Greco LGB-700 into the usual Markbass toan cubes. Sorry, shoe fetishists, no footwear pic, but it was a pair of slip on Vans in a red/white gingham pattern.

  3. Blues/Hendrix band last night. We had a guitarist friend come up from Karachi for the weekend so we did an impromptu gig. Only a days notice to advertise it but our loyal band of blues fans turned out and it was a great atmosphere. Even had our main guitarist playing his strat behind his head during voodoo. Just need to get him to set fire to his guitar now for the authentic experience!

  4. The originals band is intended to perform the BL's songs live, while he records them solo and gets a production job done on them. Last night's gig was to promote his first single. We were at The Yard, Coventry's premier LGBTQ+ venue (according to their website). The drummer is also a sound engineer and had just taken delivery of 90% of his PA system, the FOH tops and subs being the missing components, so I brought my Alto TS408s and we used those for monitors and his DB Technology wedges for FOH. All set up and ready to go with Robert having a little tinkle. I was playing a Sei Original 5-string fretless through a Zoom MS-60B into a Tecamp Puma 900 and GR Bass AT212 cab, footwear was a pair of unbranded slip-on memory foam trainers, Ebay item 185202385506. I made a couple of cockups but it all went well, we got a very good reception.

  5. Last nights wedding was good fun. decent crowd albeit a small number of people. Struggled a bit with IEMs though. It’s a bit of a rubbish room anyway but we’ve added some vocal reverb pedals into the setup to allow us to talk to the crowd easier in between songs. It makes the vocals sound great in our IEMs but for some reason they’re sitting so far in front of everything in the mix that it looses everything else a bit. Bass was a bit lost in the mix. Need to spend a bit more time in soundcheck getting the in ear mix right next time I think!

  6. A ‘charridy’ job for the Glam lads last night supporting Leukaemia and bowel cancer charities. We were asked to finish the night off but for various reasons we asked to be penultimate. Didn’t get a sound check as time was tight and we were rushed on….consequently I struggled the first few songs as there was no backfill or monitoring on my side of the stage….still the show went on and apparently it sounded fine out front. A fairly full gig list until the end of May now…onwards and upwards.

  12. I'm liking this lot: Korg Tuner - People tend to like mini tuners to save a couple of cm, but personally I like the big screen on this full sized pitchblack and like a bit of stomping space around the footswitch (it is the pedal I stomp on/off the most). Octamizer - My favourite analogue filter, has tones you just don't get with digital ones. Blower box - a decent Rat. As the imagery and the name 'rat' suggest it isn't very 'nice' sounding in isolation for home on headphones, works well for nasty rowdy parts of songs live along with a band though. DCX - this is is new to me, it's good as an EQ and preamp, or as an overdrive, very responsive and sounds good. Just a shame you can't footswitch from one to the other, I want two! Cali 76 - doesn't really need an introduction. I'm liking it at the end of the signal chain with this lot as the others are all quite sensitive to playing dynamics so I prefer them before compression. UA volt - just used at home for aux in, headphone out, and Laptop interface. It gets swopped with a Subzero DI live. Next up will be a FI v4 - it should cover synth, filter and some modulation things. I just need to decide if it's worth the extra £ for going small or not. As far as the ditching pedals question: At home 'gig performer' software with the UA interface works well and can cover almost everything pedals do. Playing live is different though - if I want to stomp on a pedal for distortion for one part of a song, quickly mute myself, regularly check I'm in tune in a venue with a lot of background noise, have a decent amount of hands-on compression control, have a certain preamp sound, occasionally add a bit of octave down, and all done with a reliable and simple 'stomp here' and 'what you see is what you get dials'...well, none of that is happening without pedals.....You can probably get by without pedals live but you could also only ever drink water, it's good to have some other flavours and do more than just 'get by'.

  13. Price Correction -£395 not £500!! Unleash your inner Ox at a bargain price! These basses are now discontinued due to a cease and desist from Gibson, although I did find another one for sale in Australia (link below). This example is brand-new in box and has never been played. It has a lovely Jazz-style roasted neck and absolutely growls! It weighs in at a reasonable 9.4lbs or just under 4.3kg. Collection from Chesterfield is preferred, or a reasonable car park meet-up. I can courier to the UK for an added £25. Here’s some blurb….. The Lowrider is a true powerhouse with a satin black finish, roasted maple neck and fingerboard, equipped with dual oversized humbuckers for a bold sound. Finish - Satin Black with matching headstock Scale length - 34" Neck - Roasted Maple Fingerboard - Roasted Maple Pickups - 2 x Oversized humbuckers Pickguard - Gloss black Frets - 20 Black dot inlays Body - Poplar Machine heads - Vintage Chrome Bridge - Vintage Chrome with Brass saddles https://guitarfactorypenrith.com.au/products/ashdown-roasted-series-the-lowrider-bass

  15. oops.. got it for £90 in the end. My plan is to flip the speakers into the TE1015H & 2103x to get both cabs working again, and then take advantage of the split grill design to turn this cab into a cool set of draws using some old B&Q soft closing kitchen draws I have lying around. Before anyone says that is sacrilege, I just want to say this isn't a "real" TE cab as it's from the early Peavey era. Mind you I did feel a bit bad when the chap said "goodbye old friend" as I closed the car boot 😞

  16. Had to build a pedalboard for a new fretted bass project so this is the current iteration. Super simple, just tuner, octave, compressor and preamp/di with a passive Fender Precision. May not settle on these pedals as they are stolen from my main fretless board but the tuner and octave will stay. The Ampeg optical compressor is great with a fretless but I may give a Cali76 a go and see what I prefer with each setup unless I can find a better compressor for the fretted board. A Laney Digbeth preamp is on the cards which I think might sound nice with a fretless so the Samsamp may also stay on this fretted board.

  18. I had an idea at the beginning of the year to try the equivalent for the Hulla band (where I always DI). I use an Ampeg Classic preamp pedal and as it's always on, it could sit anywhere - even on the sound man's desk (we have a permanent sound guy). But, as @tayste_2000, I like the idea of being able to mute the signal so I quickly added a tuner pedal. When we started rehearsing, I added my Zoom MS60B so that I could experiment with different effects on the fly as new songs were tried out. And then I was asked to provide a keyboard bass part using a midi pedal, and that had to be mixed into the bass guitar channel so on went a Joyo Orthros line mixer. And so on. My pedal free pedal board now has the MS60b acting as a noisegate and compressor as well as a tuner/mute. Somehow, a Univibe and Chorus have sneaked on while I wasn't looking. 😀 Yes - I ditched pedals entirely for about 3 days in January.

  19. That's the difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowing what basses Geddy used vs. knowing that, if you went out and got those instruments, and even if you used the EXACT SAME BASSES, you would still sound nothing like Geddy Lee. There is a lovely story out there where Ted Nugent spoke of having Van Halen as a support band. Nugent loved EVH's sound and asked to try his guitar. Nugent didn't touch any of the controls on the guitar or amp and, upon playing the instrument, was disappointed to find that he sounded exactly like Ted Nugent.

  20. I really love the pickup positions of the Passion and the dual EQs of the Arpege. The Delanos are a very different sound from the Benedettis, would be a long battle to pick a favourite. Despite the bolt-on neck, the sustain and clarity of the Arpege is something else. It leads me to think that a Passion IV with that dual EQ setup would be something very special indeed.

  21. Bought new for the princely sum of £166, I bought this to experiment with recording sone heavy music this year. It’s a 30” Baritone and came strung and setup in B standard (BEADF#B), but I’ve currently got it in drop A, so just dropping that low string a tone. The whole guitar is extremely impressive for the money, sure the fretboard isn’t rolled, and the tuners are a bit cheap, but as a basic instrument, not least a platform for upgrading if it does what I need, it’s quite brilliant. Worst case, I bail on the guitar thing and string it like a bass VI. Si

  25. I was lucky to get one of the last CW basses with graphite that Rob made. I’d just finished my immunotherapy and decided to treat myself with the purchase with some money my mum had left me (she passed unexpectedly just before I got my diagnosis so it was a tough time). I called on the off chance and Rob said he was just finishing off a CW with white LEDS and the guy who’d ordered it couldn’t take it for some reason so it ended up with me. I know we all say we have a bass we’d never sell but this one really does hit that category for me. I gig it rarely but it always puts a smile on my face. I hope Rob and Dawn enjoy their well deserved retirement.

  26. Ernie Ball MusicMan Stingray Short Scale This is a lovely short-scale Stingray, although not quite mint it is in excellent condition. There are one or two small scuffs and a ding on the headstock. The roasted maple neck is fantastic with no flaws. It’s very light at 3.4kgs. The original case is in good condition there is a small crack on side but it doesn’t prevent it closing or have any impact on function. The bass comes with keys, sticker & manual. These newer versions with the roasted neck are hard to come by in the UK. It’s an interesting example as it hasn’t been drilled for a scratch-plate. This however shows off the sunburst finish nicely. Apparently the original owner had done some web design work for EBMM and got the bass as part payment. There is a scratch-plate included that had been mounted previously using double sided tape. Should you wish to use it there is also a stock scratch-plate. I bought this recently and love it but expensive renovation work on my house means I’m going back to my faithful, bashed in old Fender Mustang. UK only. Pickup preferred but can post at buyers cost. Possible trades to consider Sandberg Lionel plus money my way, an old US Mustang, a JMJ Mustang plus cash my way. No other trades will be considered, thanks.

  27. *** NOW SOLD *** For sale is my 2004 fretless Fender Japan 62RI Precision bass in sunburst. Bought this from Bass Bros in 2022 and it's been an absolute dream to play. Only modification I've had done is have the Fender 62 Vintage pickups fitted by The Bass Gallery. This bass has mostly been my backup but was used to record an EP in the summer of 2024. I'm super reluctant to sell this as it's such an amazing bass and the neck is probably my favourite neck out of all my basses but a new project means I need to buy a backup fretted bass so this will make way for my next backup 😂 Fitted with LaBella Low Tension flats I think and comes with the original pickups and gig bag. Located in Camberley, Surrey. Any trial welcome and postage available at buyers cost.

  28. I've had this for years. Bought on this forum from a fellow in Yorkshire (Wil I think?) It aint perfect, has dings that have been touched up (see pics). All original though from memory. Currently wearing flats. Sounds pretty cool. Has some neck dive but not too bad and the thing only weighs 7-8lbs (see pic). Will come with a light weight gig bag. I don't really like posting but may consider it. I'll deliver or meet within 100 miles or so for some fuel contribution. I also get up and down the country with a theatre show so could potentially deliver that way. I'd rather you try in person if at all possible. PM for more info if needed. Please search for my feedback. No trades, sale only. £450 £425ONO

  34. I now have 7 basses. I once had 27!, back when I was single. Friends used to visit and stay over just to play them all I have too many but I can't complain. This is a lovely bass. I don't need it but owning it is a pleasure and I can bring it out occasionally. I have it on sale here and on eBay. I'll maybe give it a week and withdraw it and just keep it and hope the wife doesn't start counting. I'm not prepared to drop below £400 but I will ship to the UK for £15, which amounts to the same thing I know. If not I win either way I haven't has this lovely bass long. I decided that I needed a 5 string to deal with the band's regular need to drop key. It was bought locally and this bass is like new as hopefully the photos show. Weight measured with accurate digital fishing scales is 9.48lb and the bass balances well on a strap and seated. Strung with a set of D'Addario nickel wound strings that are very fresh. In a way it's better than new. The action was as good as you'd expect. As is my way I ran a fret rocker over the fretboard and found one fret, 20 of 21 slightly high. A light dress and polish to this one fret has resulted in a gloriously low clean action for those who like their bass set up this way. Why am I selling? A GAS attack pure and simple. I saw the CLF G&L L2500 for sale on here and got led astray The price is firm as it's exactly what I paid and a very good price for this excellent example of a highly rated 5 string bass. Viewing and trying out welcomed in Kendal. I don't have a spare gig bag or case at the moment so collection preferred but otherwise I can probably sort packaging and courier at cost. Peter

  37. 5th knock with the new band - name as yet undecided - and it's still sounding good. We've run up a set list which varies from 'Does Your Mother Know' to 'Born To Be Wild' with side tracks to 'Superstition' and 'Games People Play' amongst others. The line up is drums, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and yours truly on bass. We all sing - them much better than me - so the potential is there for nice vocal harmonies. So far we've concentrated on getting familiar with each other's styles, finding the right mix of songs and, in the case of the acoustic guitarist, getting used to playing in a band (he's only ever played solo and then only a couple of times). We rehearse silently through a mixer and headphones and the recordings have been a great way to listen back in the cold light. So far, so good. Next steps are to fix the arrangements and get a couple of rehearsals at full volume with backline etc at a local hall. Then it's gig time! 😀

  39. There's a similar thought to a different builder, here. I'm uncertain how many luthiers Jaydee employ(ed). When Mike Lull died a few years ago, his son Spencer took over the business; my understanding is that Lull had outsourced elements of the builds when demand exceeded the limits of the workshop. Spencer changed things by bringing work back in house and by stripping back the models they offered (focus is now on Precision/Jazz type models). He seems considerably more hands on from a socials perspective, too. From what I've seen and read, quality seems to be as good, if not better, than previously. Perhaps all it takes is new blood to take over. They know the legacy of the brand and want to invest in that.

  41. Good evening... Not easy in words of less than one syllable, but I'll try. Disclaimer : I did the lights for Kiemsa (pop/rock/ska originals, toured all over France...) for several years. I used a laptop with a Sunlite DMX controller; it worked a treat, but I was the dedicated 'lighter'. It can't be done that way piloted by anyone playing. If your requirements are modest, a simple DMX controller with a four-button footswitch would do. Look at the Stairville Stage TRI LED Bundle Remote (Thomann...), which works with several Stairville lighting rigs. It's all decent enough stuff for pub gigs, and there's not much available for lower budgets that that. If your needs are more sophisticated, the budget goes up exponentially. A Stairville rig (or equivalent...) will suffice, though, to do what you describe. You may have to invest in a compatible rig, and sell you current system (or keep your rig as 'extra' Fx; in lighting, less is not necessarily more...). Look at the Thomann stuff, and get back with questions if need be. Hope this helps. Douglas Edit : Norris (above ^^...) is on the money, too. I concur with my learned colleague.

  42. My previous piano teacher was very keen on going to grades as soon as possible - using them as targets to aim for. I found that caused me stress, and a subsequent music teacher (who liked to think of grades passing by like road signs, leisurely and without stress) said that teachers who teach a lot of children are used to pushing students through exams quickly as that's what many parents expect. Edit: I'm working on grade 4 at the moment. I took grade 3 last year, and one per year feels about right for me.

  44. More Anthony Jackson - it's actually Steve Khan's fault. These tunes have such great bass parts. This is the complete bass performance on the tun 'Mari Mulambo' from the 2011 Steve Khan album, 'Parting Shot'. Bit os a monster chart at 9 pages (and there are lots of repeat sections) but the track is 10.20 long so that's what happens. The line is essentially a repeated ostinato with a couple of unison passage and breaks to keep the interest up. https://bilbosbassbites.co.uk/mari-mulambo-steve-khan/ I just realised I have posted over about 30 minutes of dots today! That' learn ya!!

  48. Make no mistake, this is a stupendous instrument. The tones available are simply staggering, and the playability is exceptional. I bought this bass a few months ago from Chris and Al at Alpher Instruments and I have been delighted by its amazing tonal capability. It goes without saying that the instrument is built to the highest standards and to all intents and purposes never having been gigged this bass is in extremely good condition with virtually no signs of use. I thought that I might keep this bass for the duration but I managed to snap up my grail bass a week ago and I have decided off the back of this that it makes sense for the Alpher to find a new home where the new owner can play and appreciate this fantastic instrument to its fullest extent. Please see a link below to the full specs which are still on the Alpher website and also some fabulous photos. I can also provide some photos if required. The bass comes with an excellent hiscox case and various tools, there is also an ebony finger ramp which is detachable. The Sunbear pickups are made in the UK by the legendary Stuart Robson, who is fast developing a reputation as one of the finest pick up gurus known the planet. The pickups on my bass are based on an original 51 P bass pickup which he repaired and rewound recently. Here’s a video link show Chris from Alpher demoing his own personal Hammerhead bass, it provides an excellent idea of the breadth of tones and the quality of the sound the bass produces. I may look at a partial trade for a cheaper instrument and cash my way, preference would be for some sort of 5 string or a quality amp set up. The sale price is also flexible to some extent, if you have an idea, or offer please do get in touch. I will post my own proof of ownership photos shortly. For total transparency please do take notice of the last picture which shows a tiny mark on the body. It’s not really noticeable but I felt compelled to point it out.. 49. I went to the guitar auction at Gardiner Houlgate (work is slow) and I played this. It’s a handmade luthier built bass with a Sims Custom Shop neck and full Status electronics. It’s quite bonkers but it’s utterly amazingly well set up, with a pencil thin jazz neck with built-in LEDs. Little play wear and a fully fitted custom flightcase all for £503. It was very much a speculative bid, but I’m really happy with it. The mind boggles at what it much have cost when brand new.

It’s a 2018 bass in fine condition, well set up with no dents dings or wear except for a slight glossing to the top under the pickups which is only visible in certain angles. here are the specs: Ash body burl walnut top Maple neck wenge fingerboard hip shot tuners, Elrick bridge bartolini ntmbf preamp with active passive switch and 3 position mid switch 250-500-1000hz weight around 8.5lbs TKL teardrop hard case Trades I would prefer: USA MTD 535 24, headlesss MTD 5 , headless Roscoe 5, elrick evolution gold 5. Possibly a nice short scale headless 4 string. Or anything else that takes my fancy 🤭
