  1. Very good acoustic gig. I was very happy with my performance. Respectful size crowd considering the room is huge and usually used for wedding receptions. I've put the G&L ASAT away for a while I'm playing my 2000 MIJ Fender P. I've attached a few pics. Daryl

  3. We did the opening show of a run of a 50s Rock’n’Roll show last night. Given that we only had three days to rehearse on stage (people had prepped at home beforehand) it all went pretty well. The tricky part isn’t the music, it’s the transitions between songs and does-singer-A-do-schtick-here-or-do-we-just-proceed type hesitation. Given that, it went OK. A special mention in dispatches to the Jerry Lee Lewis - a great guy 82 YEARS OF AGE! He disappears during one of the medleys for so long that I’m beginning to think that something has happened, and then reappears in full drape jacket with tiger skin lapels, climbs onto the piano and completely (in a very good way) steals the show with his rendition of Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ on. A nice, modest guy off-stage who shows us youngsters (I am a sprightly 58) how it’s done. Respect!

  4. My gig last night I have to say was one of the most enjoyable gigs I've ever played. It was my first gig with a new artist called Andrew Maxwell Morris and we were playing at the Bedford in Balham. Both myself and the drummer are both new to the group as Andrew has decided to expand from a three piece to a full five piece band. So after two rehearsals, we were out gigging. I've been super fortunate to have played some incredible venues in the past, including Brixton Academy, The Roundhouse, G Live, The Hacienda and various festivals to many thousands but wow, what an incredible venue The Bedford is. It's like The Roundhouse and Ronnie Scott's had a baby, so beautiful and intimate and the sound was out of the world. I was just using the in house Ampeg Rocket 210 which sounded great and my Japanese Fender 60's P-Bass strung with LaBella flats. Anyway, they also film the performance so if anyone wants to watch then here it is.

  5. Reluctantly selling my Aria Pro II SB1000 from 1981. It’s in excellent condition for a 44 year old bass. All original with original full sizes case. Ash body, walnut finish, original electronics with no issues. Maple neck with ebony fretboard. Small ding on top side of neck at 11th fret (pictured). Currently strung with DR Black Beauties. Original case shows signs of wear and is serviceable, but I wouldn’t use it for day to day gigging. Weight - 5kgs. It’s heavy. But if you wear it high, in the 80s position as originally intended, the weight is not an issue!

  6. Well I really didn't need another bass, I think having 7 after only playing for 12 months is probably a sign that I have fallen victim to GAS, but as a huge Guy Pratt fan I couldn't resist any longer and I have no regrets. There are lots of reviews saying how good, and what great value these basses are and I cant argue with any of them. Even with my limited experience, and even more limited ability I can say it is an absolute joy to play and the finish and the overall quality far exceed what I expected at this price.

  7. I've just unearthed a veritable treasure trove of old recordings from 1978 through to the mid-90s. I thought these were all long gone to landfill, but my mother-in-law says, 'I've found a box of cassettes in the garage,' so I did a trip out to pick them up. Man alive. I'm just transferring the first one to the PC. In the early 90s we were rehearsing in our (rather well-heeled) guitarist's basement, a double garage conversion that was under the main lounge of his house. We had a ton of gear...I had two Hamer basses and a huge Laney stack, guitarist came back from a US holiday with three Jacksons (a purple Kelly, two Strat things in custom paint) and he was running a superb Fender Twin Reverb. Thinking back, I can recall he'd bought a Fostex F-77, a little mixer (for the drums) and a bunch of decent microphones, so we tended to capture fairly clean recordings whenever we rehearsed. Listening back, it's a home counties cross between Motley Crue, Anthrax and U2. I'm about halfway through the first cassette (dated May 1991), by which time we seem to have employed the services of a singer who is pretty much channeling Mike Patton (I wonder where he is now). It sounds bonkers. So f*cking fast. There goes my weekend.

  9. Looks like my Big Board is turning in to an ambient / looping kind of system, with a couple of recent additions and the return of some old favourites: Peterson StroboStomp Mini Orange Kongpressor Mosky Silver Horse "Klone", usually in Golden Horse mode (low gain boost / OD) MXR Bass Octave Deluxe. It has both Growl and Girth. T-Rex Diva Drive. Tube Screamer with a Mix control, basically. I pulled it out again the other night and it sounded better than I remembered. IK Multimedia TONEX ONE. Doesn't have a fixed role. For straight bass, all I would need is The Fridge (SVT amp/cab), but it's a Swiss Army Knife that can do all sorts. I might add a Preset that uses stereo delay and/or reverb, for example. All stereo from here on: Boss MD-200: all the modulations. Chase Bliss Onward: I talked about this in the Mystery Box thread. I need to put a right-angle plug on the expression pedal I have to control the Error levels. Mooer GL100 looper, just arrived a few days ago. Still learning how to use it. It includes a basic drum presets that work in time with your loops. It can hold & play back pre-made loops too, or will once the app for that arrives. One annoyance: it has a headphone out but no volume control for it. Not a problem live in to a DI, but for practice I have: t.mix MicroMix 2. Has Bluetooth playback for practicing. I'm fairly sure that I probably have "too many" pedals at this point, and my Small Board has a couple of new additions for another post.

  10. Very nice Ken Smith lookalike, made in Slovakia by Kamil Greben. The bass has been made with a flamed maple neck through construction, with pretty walnut facings. The pickups are hand built SBS electronic, and the 2eq preamp is made by MEC. Stringspacing is 19mm. The condition is very good. There are some small damages and blemishes, but the bass looks very clean overall. The neck is straight and the truss rod works. The frets are still good too. Playability is good with a low action. It’s a very versatile and powerful bass. It has a nice warm growl with both pickups engaged, but can do plenty more. Weight is 4,65kg on my kitchen scales. Price €975 fixed. I am located in the Netherlands, but happy to ship at buyers risk.

  14. Dave, The marina is nice, however I like those steps up to the stage. Even 10 years ago,I didn't care about stuff like steps. But now when I get to a gig and I notice there's no steps, in my advanced years I'm like "Come on" guys "Really ? ". Is that an unreasonable attitude for me and some of the pensioners here that have been out there gigging for 50 years? Lol Daryl

  15. Yep that's a good point Daryl. If i make a mistake i usually apologize in the dressing room and the guys do the same but its done in good humour and everyone accepts that sometimes we make mistakes. Its live music and it occasionally happens. When someone does that the rest of us are usually unaware of the mistake as its been such a minor issue. Most of the time the audience never notice a band making a mistake provided you all look confident and just carry on as if it was meant. The Jazz version of a Glam song Dave

  17. Shame it's been cancelled. Currently watching Janek Gwizdala's latest video regarding the cancellation and the fact that him and Ian Martin Allison are still looking at doing something in London. I hope they do manage to put something together, I would definitely get a ticket to see them both.

  18. Played with the blues band in a tiny pub in Lanark. Didn't take many people to fill it so an enthusiastic audience of thirty created a great atmosphere. One downside was the access to the toilets door being immediately behind us. Two songs before the end of the first set I was aware of a most unpleasant honk emanating from said direction. Thankfully the air had cleared by the start of set 2. Man alive, it was grim for a while.

  22. Oh, god, here we go. Honestly, just put anything in there. You don't need to spend nearly £400 on pickups, even if they were hand wound by virgins in the mountains of Tibet and potted in wax from bees that produce manuka honey. Buy some Warmans. £20. Tonally you won't hear any difference. You'll want to hear difference, you'll believe you hear a difference, but there won't be any difference.

  23. This year, my summer is well decent, which is normally never the case. I‘ve got a run of a Rock’n’Roll show which started last night - 4 shows a week till the end of May, immediately followed by 6 weeks of an ABBA show - both shows are in my hometown - result. Then a two week gap and a further 7 weeks in a theatre out of town (8 shows a week), by which point it’s mid-September. Please forgive me showing off, but like I said, this normally never happens to me, so I’m well chuffed.

  31. Up for sale is my fantastic Squier Vintage Modified Fretless bass. Bass is in A1 condition, gentle home use only. These basses offer fantastic value for money and are a lovely entry point into the world of Fretless playing. In my case, it’s been a handy addition to the arsenal but is seldom used, hence the sale. As the keen eyed amongst you have noticed, this one is loaded with active EMG pickups. These pickups sound incredible. Plenty of definition, clarity and authority, and the wonderful thing about them is they are silent when soloed; you really can get that beefy, mid-focused Jaco bridge tone but without any of the 60 cycle hum. These retail for £123 (+ £10 shipping) from the big German music store and are a huge upgrade compared to the original Duncan Designed pickups. Leagues apart. I’m looking for a straight sale as I’m moving house and thinning the heard. I’m based in Trelewis, South Wales, but happy to travel 45 minutes or so in any direction to meet a buyer. Conversely, you’re more than welcome to pickup from my house and try out through an amp etc. Any questions, drop me a message. £325. Cheers, Sam

  32. With a valve power stage the compression takes place within it, which gives a different result than when it takes before it. There's also a contribution made by the output section power supply, which doesn't happen with SS. For that matter the most sought after valve amps have valve rectification in the power supply, which gives a softer transition into clipping than SS rectification. The addition of SS diodes in place of a 5Y3 or 5U4 valve in Fender amps was one of the reasons why it was said that CBS ruined them, although in truth Fender started using them in some models before the CBS takeover.

  34. Yep, I thought that as well so I threw the amp and cab sims away and it sounds much better for it. However what I'm actually using is based on the Dark Pre patch. I'll see if I can download it on Thursday and upload it here if it works.

  35. That looks great. You pay a fortune from the Fender Custom Shop to achieve that finish on a neck. I'd leave it; it's part of its history. Good luck if you do decide to go ahead. This reply will bump your post back up the line again, allowing more folk to read it.
    2 points
  36. The reason is compression. The natural compression of valves reduces the level of transient peaks that cause high level distortion when the amp is at or near full power. It can be approximated with SS using a compressor. It can be very closely approximated with SS using a compressor plus DSP emulation.

  37. 5 String Status Shark Bass. Early bass I believe serial number is 1338 Made In England. This is the active bass, she has no issues and plays superbly and sounds huge, obviously some marks and stuff from-play and age but in excellent condition with no real damage or dings just play related marks. No fret wear to speak of and all works as it should. Shipping UK £20. £699. NOW£599 No case but I do have shipping stuff.

  40. I agree, steps onto stage may seem a small thing but it’s those small things when all put together just make gigging so much easier. Plug sockets where needed is another, as is - and prob more for originals bands - hooks on walls for you to display merchandise. Tiny little things but make things go smoother.

  41. Personally I have invested tens of thousands of pounds of my own money in my business. I have worked more hours than I should, in some cases to the detriment of my health and my relationship. During COVID I had to take on loans to keep the business going as we got zero support while others received tens of thousands. I’ve spent lots (and I mean Fodera/pre-CBS levels) on innovations. Some have worked, many have failed. I’m probably no better off than had I maintained my career trajectory in-house. I think my experience is probably similar to lots of Ltd company owners.

  43. Eich BC112pro solved all my problems. Amazing DI, flexible EQ and tilt control (great for adjusting the character for different basses) and it leans back for monitoring without needing a compromised wedge shaped enclosure. Very light and well made. You can turn off the cab and use the amplifier for headphone practice too. I always liked the idea of a good combo but found the problem was that they fired at my feet so this solves that problem really well. I’ve never heard myself better on stage. I tend to put it to my side between me and my drummer.

  44. I've had a bunch of Ibanez's over the years. My favourites were an ATK805 and an SR3005. The 3005 was the 1st high quality bass I had owned and I picked up another on here in a trade recently. The stacking knobs have been replaced but it remains a killer instrument. so well made and sound amazing so sharing some pictures.

  46. We've been playing together for about 20 years and mistakes are few and far between. However we wear our big boy pants and can take the big OOOH face from the others when we drop one, and hand it out too. It's all part of the fun. No egos. I love it. The audience are usually clued up musically too, so they notice and join in the friendly barracking. It's all taken in good humour

  50. I'm thinning the herd to focus on getting a few things I'm after. I like this bass, a lot, but since getting a USA Musicman Sub This just hasn't been out at all. There are some signs of wear, particularly at the headstock (see pictures), but it palys and sounds as it should. The original machine heads were rubbish so I put some Schallers on it. I'm ideally looking for pick up or delivery, I'm in Edinburgh, but happy to meet within reasonable distance. I have gig bags (lots of them) and I can fashion a box if needs be, but postage would need to be paid by the buyer. Still, I'd prefer you try it first... Cash is king, but, a short scale Fender looking thing, or a Coronado might persuade me. Just noticed the new proof of ownership thing, I'll get a pic with a post it note later today - I just took the photos yesterday, just because it wasn't raining in Edinburgh.
