  1. Yeah it was great fun last week. Currently on tour in Germany with a different band. Also great fun.

  2. This bass is in excellent condition. The spec is as follows. Alembic Europa 5 string bass Scale Length Long scale 34" Neck through design with maple and purpleheart construction Ebony fretboard Adjustable height brass nut Solid machined brass bridge with brass saddes mounted to a large brass sustain block Solid machined brass tailpiece. Top wood is Bocate Body is solid mahogany Headstock has a bocate laminate on front and back, with cast brass alembic logo on the front. Tuners are gold coloured. Pickups are alembic MXY low impedance pickups. The Europa controls are volume, pan, filter, Q switch, bass boost/cut switch, treble boost/cut switch. The quick tone switches are bass and treble and are not individual switches for the pickups. Each switch provides 6db boost, flat, and 6db cut. side mounted 1/4" mono jack (see image link) http://club.alembic.com/Images/16271/106010.jpg (Owners Manual) http://www.alembic.com/support/care.html The bass is a neck through design made from maple and purpleheart. Ebony There is an inlay of my initials in the 12th fret which was done by Jaydee custom guitars about 12 years or so ago plus and my name engraved on the truss rod cavity which i may be able to remove if if is a deal breaker or the buyer can just reverse it. The switches are mounted on chrome plated washers as a few years i installed some East ACG filter based electronics which required enlarging the existing switch holes to fit the filter controls. The original electronics have been back in the bass for ages now but I had to get larger washers mount the original switches. If I can find some black washers I will install those instead. The back control cavity cover is gold plated and was like that when i bought the bass. What else can I say. Well it is a great sounding bass and i am only selling it because it is not getting enough playing time so i'd rather it went to someone who will give it more attention. Send me a PM if interested. I have an original case for it also. Some information from the Alembic web site. EUROPA With its elegant and understated form, the Europa bass is the type of instrument you return to again and again, and each time you're reminded of why you love this bass so much. From the moment you wear it on strap, comfort and balance greet you. Plugging into the side mounted jack gives a satifying "kerchunk" in response. Once your amp warms up, the tone that piqued your interest in the first place comes flowing back. This bass is home. Quick tone change switches give instant access to useful on-the-fly sounds. When you're ready to take that solo, you can simply flick the bass and treble switches to the boost position, knowing full well that when you're finished, that original sound is just a click away. The Europa comes standard with Alembic's classic Maple and Purpleheart neck lamination pattern. This engineered beam supports even response across the Ebony fingerboard, and assures that snappy Alembic brilliance will be delivered at every note. Like most Alembic basses, Europas are quite happy in a variety of musical settings. Turn the low-pass filters down to 300Hz for deep tones suitable for blues. Turned up to 6KHz, there's plenty of zing for slap or driving rock technique with a pick. Versatility puts the tone control in your heart and your hands. Since each Europa bass is handcrafted right in our one-and-only shop in Santa Rosa, California, you are able to custom order any aspect of the bass. Custom fingerboard dimensions, wood choices, decorative details, or even things not yet invented are possible. More information Here are some soundcloud clips from a rehearsal with this bass. This is an amazing sounding bass and I have used it on numerous gigs though in recent years I have used it less and less as I have been using my two filter bass more. I would love this bass to go to someone who can get more use out of it than I can. I would prefer not to post it if at all possible and if you want to try before you buy, i can arrange that in my mate's studio so you can hear it at full bore.

  3. Good gig. The place was empty when we were setting up, however by 5:30 we had more than a respectable size crowd. I was happy with my playing tonight. Tomorrow night we're back at The Harley Motor. Daryl

  4. I've been working towards somewhat of a 'vision' I've had for a while, and have finally got there! Let's get a couple of things out of the way first: 1) Yes, I know it's probably unnecessary. 2) This is my cellar/music room, a tatty time capsule to the late 80's/early 90's, and is a way down the renovation list. 3) Yes, I may be having a mid life crisis of sorts. I also bought a Red Arrows leather jacket the other day. I've had my GR Bass 4x10" for a couple of years now, and love it deeply. It's by far the best single cab I've had in the past almost 30 years, amongst some great cabs. I'd been getting to think I might like a GR Bass Amp too... At the same time, I was thinking it would be cool to be able to run more cabs, but the GR410+ is 4 ohm... naturally then, the One 1400 caught my eye! I decided that a new one was more than I could run to, and there didn't seem to be used ones around, but then last week I spotted @franzbassist selling one! After some discussion it was a done deal, and it arrived today! (Unbelievably well packaged I might add, I'm not sure if Gareth was trying to protect the amp or save himself a tip run 🤣). I've only had a brief play around with it this evening, but so far I'm loving it! It's clean and clear, but not clinical. Natural sounding, with a very flexible EQ section, yet still simple to use. Lots of oomph, but also great definition and dynamics. Very pleased! In addition, I've had a penchant for 15's again in the last few years, and have been experimenting with a couple I picked up pretty cheap (one from the fantastic @vmaxblues). They were great, but I was fixated on a specific form factor, and wanted two cabs the same. So in the past few weeks I've picked up a pair of Markbass NY151's. So I now have 3 rig options: One 1400 with the GR410+, this will be my main rig: The pair of NY151's, pictured here with my backup amp, a LMII. This configuration will be great for stages with little space: And then we have the behemoth.... The 1400w, 4x10" + 2x15" monster! This should do well for the outdoor shows in the summer! 😎👌 Sounds absolutely phenomenal! Not just ridiculously loud and gutsy, but REALLY good sounding! I did wonder if something sounded a bit funny for a moment, but then I realised it was just the house disintegrating 🤣🤣🤣. I often find at outdoor gigs (using only our PA - mainly only for vocals), the bass gets a bit lost, whereas the 100w valve half stacks/stacks seem to project well across a field no problem. I'm hoping this will help balanced things up a bit. 😉 Sorry for the long post, but I've been working towards this for some time, and I'm over the moon that I've got there in the end! Oli

  5. For sale I have my lovely Precision. I'm really gravitating toward my Jazz basses nowadays, so this one isn't getting out of the cupboard much. I dare say I'll probably regret this sale given time, but it seems pointless to have it gathering dust. Spec: Neck: Fender American Standard Rosewood dated 2005. Straight and true. Beautiful silky smooth finish on the rear. An absolute joy to move around. Body: Northwest New Ash. Originally painted with poly, it was fully stripped back before having some nitro / varnish thrown at it. It was then rubbed back to show the effect that you can see in the photos. It's stunning. No gouges as such. Some light scratches. You can see a natural shiny mark where my wrist has been sitting during playing. The weight is very light indeed. Black shielded pickguard. I think I've a dark tort guard I could include also. Pickups / controls: EMG Geezer. Sounds nice and punchy. Metalwork: Gotoh vintage bridge. Gotoh vintage tuners. I had to reuse the original bushings for the tuners as the Gotoh ones were a touch loose. I roughed them up a bit. Looks fine I think. Bronze coloured control knobs. Relic pickguard screws. Strings: Fender 9050 .100 flats. A few years old now, so nice and worn in. Could also fit some excellent DR Roundwounds if the new owner would prefer these. I'll attach a few picks of the various pickguards I've fitted in the past. Located in Thurso, miles from anywhere. Post will be required I'd imagine. I'd really prefer to send this in a hard case, of which I've none spare at the moment. I'm sure a solution could be found though. Edit: I'm not looking for trades at the moment. I've decided that 6 other bass guitars are enough. Cheers all.

  6. Queer punk gig last night in Edinburgh's Wee Red Bar with two other punk bands. Great atmos, plenty of people dancing, including one of my students from this Girls Rock School term. It was the first chance I'd had to make full use of my wireless rig - at its previous gig, I'd been literally backed into a corner at the Reivers Sports Bar in Galashiels with the 80s band. The stage is tiny and surrounded by railings, which meant that getting a six-piece band on was a very tight squeeze and once the bass player's on, she's staying there. But last night, I was able to wander out front and dance along with the audience. Big grins all round. We premiered a new song, too! And to cap it off, the headline band invited us over to Belfast. World tour! 😅 I took my trusty Sterling Stingray along and it acquitted itself very well through the venue's Peavey backline (I don't know the model - it was a combo with "Peavey' on the front) although it didn't have the clout that it does through my Eden rig. I had been thinking about adding my new sfx Thumpinator to my pedalboard, but then I remembered that fiddling with one's pedalboard just before a gig is officially Asking For It. I had a play with it today and it seems to work best when placed just after the wireless receiver / tuner. Next step is to see how it sounds in the studio as opposed to through a wee practice amp. No pics yet, as we're still waiting for the photographer to provide them, but we had a great time!

  7. I had the (dubious) honour of working with him mixing a live album in the early 90's and can agree to that reputation. It would rank in my top 5 worse sessions. However he knew his stuff on Stracocasters and would talk to me about how to date them from the number of scratch plate screws or the type of neck plate. He also had a stunning Swedish girlfriend at the time. Which was nice...

  9. This has been on the cards pretty much since I first discovered ACG 11 odd years ago. It was @eude’s Finn 4 which first drew me to @skelf’s basses and very soon after that I saw a Holly-topped Finn. I’ve been hooked since the first bass I bought, and for a long time had a Holly-topped Finn in my wishlist. It almost became a reality about 5 years ago but I never got beyond the “annoying Alan” phase. Fast forward to last year, an ebony Finn which Alan shared on socials made me hatch a cunning plan for a yin/yang pair of basses - one holly, one ebony. Specs were developed, plans were hatched, then I had to be sensible and drop one of the two. Naturally I kept the holly plan as it has been on the list since day one, and the shape changed from Finn to RetroB. Thus this spec was born and a deposit was paid last July. Today the 5 string bass of my dreams was delivered. She sounds as good as she looks, and I’m over the moon 😎 So, the specs: Limba body, bloodwood accent, holly top 3pc Ash neck with ultra slim profile, ebony fingerboard with bloodwood blocks, 30” radius 3+2 headstock with holly facing and limba rear veneer 50mm RFB in bridge, 50mm OPB in neck Passive vol/tone/blend with coil select switch for RFB Black hardware 17mm bridge spacing (Hipshot A) Gotoh resolute tuners Honestly couldn’t be happier at this point, I am looking forward to getting her out in the wild with Katy Hurt next month 🤠 First 3 pics are from my “unboxing”, the rest are Alan’s:

  10. This is an excellent condition Ashdown Touring 220 combo. It's a 1x15 setup featuring a twin valve pre-amp with a 180 watt old school power section, people more clued up than me can clarify whether it's solid state, class AB or whatever. It's definitely not a class D light weight unit! It has a 3 band passive tone stack with switchable bass and mid frequencies plus a bright switch. Tonally it's big and warm but isn't designed for full on valve distortion. It's in excellent condition with one superficial scratch in the tolex on one side and a couple of pulls in the grill cloth. It's lived in the bands private rehearsal room where it has never been abused. I have no real idea of the value of this so I'm asking what I think to be a reasonable £250 collected from the Wellingborough area. It's not exactly light weight so unfortunately I am unable to drag it out for posting. Potential buyers are welcome to try it out and the kettle will be on.

  11. I never got my name in lights but more than happy with chalk! We had our headline at The Vic in Swindon. We’d been weeks in rehearsal and our soundcheck had us struck by the curse of backing tracks. For some reason we had a virtually non-existent kick drum and barely audible count ins, coupled with ear bleedingly loud keyboard washes! Rather than try and dissect the problem, we hastily rewrote the set to come up with a stripped back set. The Rickenbacker sounded immense through my Blackstar U700 head and 4x10. That head continues to excel in all situations. The crowd walked a line between modest but respectable (original goth music in Swindon on a school night perhaps isn’t the easiest of sells). Despite the initial woes of soundcheck, a fantastic night. I was even complimented on my singing voice - something I have been working hard on for the last couple of years 🎉

  12. This stuff is all good fun but we’re ripping off the intellectual property of huge numbers of people doing this. ChatGPT aren’t paying to license this. Neither did they pay Studio Ghib for the manga stuff and a near limitless number of other things they’ve stolen. It’s fun and a I enjoy seeing the results, but ultimately, it’s theft, however the AI guys want to dress it up.

  14. I bought this fairly recently from the very lovely Mr @sPiKi but my wife's car has died, I have too much music gear, and after twenty years of playing J basses its very hard to give anything else a fair shot. This Reverend Mercalli 4 is really high quality -- a lovely roasted maple, satin finish neck, absolutely rock solid bridge, huge sounding pickups. But needs must. Its also really light (3.65 kg!) which is an added bonus. Bass is in excellent playing condition, there is some buckle rash on the back (see pics) but nothing that stops this being an awesome instrument. I've got the original box it came in so I can post this anywhere to mainland UK for £555 or you can come round to my gaff (Burntisland, Fife) and I'll make you a cuppa whilst you try it out. Alternatively can meet in Haymarket (Edinburgh) during the working week. 17. I'm bloody fortunate to play in a band that rehearses an album for 3-months, gigs it once, and then moves on to the next. It's great fun, it's challenging, and for someone who's really easily bored, it's a great way to be constantly engaged with a band. So, we're doing Odelay by Beck at the moment, gig in June. It's an interesting departure for me coming from a mostly rock/funk/blues background to be playing such an eclectic and informal album. Odelay's often cited as his best album but I felt that musically it wasn't quite where I'd always placed Beck - although I realised that as an artist he'd pretty much passed me by for 30 or so years - so having a day to myself set out to do some wider listening. f*** me! I'm honestly quite blown away by the sheer creativity, diversity, and musicality of his work. As a bass player (I use the term loosely), I'm drawn not only to some extremely well crafted bass lines but also to some wonderful bass tone, the below being a great example... ...but over and above the well known tracks (Devil's Haircut, Where It's At etc), there's also a whole load of crazy in there, although also including great bass playing and tone (alongside some lovely impersonation/plagiarism, Prince and Kravitz get on down), the fretless and and upright in this is sublime.... I'm gonna be spending quite a lot of time working on some of his basslines, once I've mastered the Odelay tracks

  19. Played a Sixtieth birthday party yesterday at Tiffany's on the end of Weston-Super-Mare Pier depping for The John Verity Band. There was us and a Metallica Tribute 'Metallicish". What an absolute organisational shitshow! Absolutely no common sense from the events co-ordinator applied, very limited access for vehicles to the end of the pier and stage placed all wrong. We ended up with the ridiculous situation where we weren't allowed to bring vehicles back to the venue to load out because the risk assessment dictated no vehicles on the pier while there were pedestrians around - despite the fact that there are effectively three lanes on the pier - a tunnel - and one lane either side. Ended up with John (who's 75 YO) and I having to wheel the gear 400 yard on trollies to the van to leave. Disgusted - I'll never play there again - avoid at al cost - W Anchors!

  21. Got a rehearsal booked for tomorrow afternoon 11am - 5pm with the Glam covers band to go over some new songs we fancy trying out. We'll also run thru some songs in the set that we feel need a polish up or that we haven't played for a while. We'll also discuss the usual band issues which this time around is how we manage the PA ie who controls the desk and do we go for PA hire at every gig rather than use our own. Most gigs are clubs varying from 80-200 people. Always look forward to a rehearsal. We only have them 3-4 times a year more so when things are slow. (less than 2 gigs a month) Dave

  24. Got this Hamer Chaparral Bass two years ago. I like it Made 1991 I believe. Aftermarket Seymour Duncan pickups, not the original EMGs. I found it in the classifieds here locally (Iceland). It was left for some time without a bag or case in a loft of a youth center. The janitor looked for it with me on every floor until we found it behind an old drum set on the top floor. The owner was out of town at the time and needed the janitors help in finding it. From the moment I played it unplugged with old strings it was clear that this is a quality instrument, it resonates and plays well. I would love to own a Cruise bass, I remember when version 2 came out and got a perfect review in Bass Player.

  26. Gorgeous looking bass! At the risk of derailing your thread, I'd say if it were fretless, it could be considered very 'Beedsteresque' (if such a word existed @Beedster? 😁) Anyway, back on topic, it's a seriously cool looking P Bass and best of luck with the sale! 👍😊

  29. First night-time gig since before the New Year. We did a Sunday afternoon gig two weeks ago in a place that is usually a rock/blues venue (Girdwoods for the Scottish cental belt BCr's) but are trying different things on a Sunday. It was a great response from the punters and we have been re-booked for a date in December. About to unleash Americana/Country upon a social club formally attached to the Fairfields shipyard in Govan, Glasgow. I played this venue every few months, on rotation back in the 80's , when things were economically a lot different. A brilliant place back then and I'm hoping the sons and daughters (and maybe some of the Auld Yins [old ones])from back in the day might show up! There is a HUGE age variation in the band so I'll leave it up to the viewer to figure out the old and the young! (BTW for the ocularly challenged the last two on the left with a 38 year difference!).

  30. I did this today. After fitting the LHZ to the still nameless maple board Euro 4LX. I've decided that for the covers project I need my comfort-zone analogue boxes. I don't really need much and this does it all and more. A quick run-through: 1. The SFX Microthumpinator is essential (it's like an air fryer. How people live without them, I have no idea). 2. The GK Plex is my favourite pedal/box/effect/DI ever. 3. The TC Chorus just uses the Duff TonePrint, I don't need anything else. 4. The MXR filter (3rd time I've had one of these) is used on 2 songs. 5. The Made by Mike (London Era) ZVEX Woolly Mammoth clone, that I've had forever, is there in case I need to use this rig for the originals band. Other: It's all sitting on a Pedaltrain Metro 16. Power is from a T-Rex Chameleon and the buttons are Orange, Vimto, Vodka, Strawberry and Lime. Tuner? It's in the Plex. Compressor? See above. Overdrive? See above. Amp sims? Guess. USB Interface? That too. Emergency Backup DI? Plex again, folks. Headphone amp? Ole Bob G thought of that too. Space inside for your stash? Damn right.

  38. Sounds like he needs a good bass tech as everything is sounding exactly like a too straight neck and a too low action especially as he has not a soft touch at all, so it ends up like this: an awful rattling mess.

  39. If it were a bass I liked and wanted to keep & play regularly then yes I’d spend on it to get it where I wanted it. I know full well from experience if it didn’t sound as I wanted I’d rarely pick it up, so if I were in your situation to me that would be £600 well spent overall rather than £400 wasted.

  40. My Activer One10 arrived this week. My rig is almost complete apart from trying different pre-amps. I currently have it running with a Sansamp BDDI mk2 and I am liking the sound with all three cabs. All 3 work together really well. Very growly. A single One10, either the Activier or a passive cab with a gnome, sounds a bit thin but I believe that's due to the hard accoustics of the room. I've used One10s live and they are fine. The new cab however is winding up my OCD as the Activier One10 does not match the two previous cabs. The handle is on the opposite side and the new logo is .... Hmmm.

  42. Another TonePumpectomy today. I said to @cetera and @Eldon Tyrell that I was going to time how long it takes me to do an installation without distractions and interruptions and it's about 45 min for a soldering installation including everything. It'd be a few mins less for an EMG flying lead installation but there's still a few joins when doing those. This is my 4th. I've got one to go but I am determined to understand that Darkglass Tone Capsule before it comes out. Then it'll be up for sale. Which reminds me, is there a market for old TonePumps???

  43. Yeah, it's an odd one. I'd mentioned this on another thread somewhere that after borrowing yours I was so impressed that I picked one up for myself. I'd dialled yours in for that on the edge of breakup sound and it was exactly what I was looking for. However, the one I bought wouldn't go as low gain even with the gain/drive control backed right off, I couldn't get it clean enough so I ended up moving it on. I recently managed to grab an immaculate mk2 off the forum recently and for my tastes it does exactly what I'm looking for, it adds a real pleasing fattnes to the bass in the mix with the band, not an obviously overdriven sound, just bigger and juicer 💦. Think a B15 kinda vibe. Some people have complained about the lack of high end but to me that's part of its appeal and what helps it slot into the mix where I want the bass to be, sitting under the other instruments and supporting them, not clanking over the top of them like modern drives do.

  44. No offense to SH who seems like a really nice guy, but I made up my mind some time ago that both the band and Fish brought out the best in each other… musically at least. The incredible song arrangements inspired Fish to write some of his best lyrics. And because the lyrics (and stories) were so good it made the arrangements sound even better. Neither have been as good in my opinion since parting ways, even though I still like and appreciate their talents separate of each other.

  45. Hi folks Just wanted to share the joy of this exceptional ACG bass handmade by Alan Cringean. I picked this up from Alan yesterday and it’s absolutely stunning. This particular model is a prototype and I’m sure Alan would be more than happy to build another if this is ur thing. From top to bottom the quality of the build is fantastic. The way Alan shapes his necks are always super comfortable to play and this is no exception. It balances perfectly either seated or on a strap. I’m really into filter preamps now and this one is fitted with the ACG EQ 01 by John East. Fine tuning your tone is excellent with the EQ01. Like every ACG I have played ( I have nine!) the quality, the workmanship and the versatility is in abundance. If you’re looking for a custom build at the highest level then speak to Alan. 48. Yes, that's the plan. Most of my busking is done on 240v from street furniture or battery power packs provided by the event organisers. For those I would use the Meanwell power supply. Where there is no 240v supply I would need a little under 2 × 7AHr batteries to run for the 5 hour set. For open mic nights, and / or Victorian pubs where the only power socket is on the wrong side of a gangway, I can play for a couple of hours on one battery. For 'acoustic' rehearsals and the like, the smaller amp and battery will reduce the weight by about a third. David
