Should I sell my markbass cabs for barefaced?
velvetkevorkian replied to gafbass02's topic in Amps and Cabs
Keep the cabs and get a car. All this schepping around without your own transport is nuts. I wouldn't compromise a cab just for size if it didn't do the job I wanted it to.
That's just not feasible for some people, I'm afraid. Sometimes a compromise is necessary -
And they have a lovely slick feel!

I use Elixirs on all my basses- I hate buggering about with strings so I just stick them on and leave them- the ones I have at the moment have been on about a year or so and still sound great. Fortunately I like the sound as well!
That's great, thanks. Can you remember the difference in tone between the two? My only experience was of a student performance once and he had a piezo. It sounded very thin, it was all there, nice and crisp, but didn't give that lovely body in the sound. I suggested to use a mic (which the sound guy humbly did!) as well as the piezo and it made the world of difference. May have been a cheap piezo unit. We pointed the mic roughly at the F hole, as you suggest. The room is quite dead but I like the idea of the 4-5 feet away. A violinist once suggested this for his violin (well, 3 ft!). He said it allowed the harmonics to form without picking up too much scratching, which you wouldn't otherwise hear unless you put your ear to the strings. Not sure about the harmonics bit, but I trusted him, did mean absolute silence though as the gain goes up!
The mic at the f-hole was pretty much all bass, while the while the distance mic gave the notes more definition IIRC. He played some bowed stuff as well which would probably have been all rumble with just the mic on the f-hole.

I have this setup (albeit on four knobs rather than two) on my Peavey 5 strings and I really like it. Being able to keep the definition of the bridge pup while still getting clarity and punch is great.

What's the next step up...Fender Precision Bass Quality
velvetkevorkian replied to Musicman20's topic in Bass Guitars
Unless you've have rampant GAS and a need to buy every weird design of bass going like me then the only real reason is to improve on what you already have. It sounds like your current bass is pretty much what you want, so what you need to is make a list of the things that you are not quite happy about with your current bass. Not things you think you might like but things you KNOW would improve the looks, feel, and sound. I'd be interested to know exactly what improvements you think your current bass NEEDS.
As usual, BigRedX hits the nail on the head. Is "Custom shop magic" really an improvement you can quantify or is it just a way of rationalising more basses? -
Works fine for me.

I did a recording a few years ago of my friend on double bass, on which I used a kick drum mic near one of the F-holes and an SM-58 type pointed at the end of the fingerboard from maybe 4 or 5 feet, which you can mix to taste. That gave an acceptable mix of thump and air, given the circumstances.

How difficult would it be to slap like this...
velvetkevorkian replied to Jamesemt's topic in Theory and Technique
Just to add to this, I got an email from Bassline today advising that the book in question is now on sale at the link above for a mere ten of your Earth pounds- bargain, given its normally 25 quid. -
I have one of these which I don't use: http://www.thomann.de/gb/planet_waves_50da...itarrengurt.htm It's not new and it does have 1 or 2 marks on it, but you're welcome to have it for the cost of postage. PM me if you're interested. Steve
Just tried making a "ghetto" version of this using a spare nylon strap in addition to the thick padded leather one I use normally- seems to be surprisingly effective, and my bass is a serious boat anchor. Thanks for the inspiration.

The author posted this about buying it from Amazon- they don't actually stock it so you have to buy from Bassline Publishing directly. Just for info -
Gets a good write up in this month's BGM.

Get Stuart Clayton's "Ultimate Slap Bass" book and hammer through it. Very good resource IMO, which goes from the basics to the almost impossibles and everything in between. Its also a satisfyingly thick volume, so it feels like money well spent on your bookshelf -
Still some funny typos, although less obvious ones this month- I've never heard of a synth with an "appreciator", or a "sinus wave".
-
I dislike them on principle, but I play one because it has the features I wanted (strings- 7 of them) and was available at the right price. I didn't buy it to play like Bill Dickens, although the ridiculously OTT EQ does make it easy to get his signature "bag full of cutlery" sound.
I know it takes away the whole point of an onboard, but Id love to see something similar by East thats a small pedal (like Aguilar Tone Hammer). Ive never been one to mod, but an pedal is something id always consider. I doubt it will happen though.
He does a J-Retro in a box- I can't link directly to it, but its on the East site as the STMP1, so I doubt its out the question.
Shell Pink, with chrome hardware - definitely not gold.
I disagree. If we're going to do this, we're going to do it properly.

Can I vote none of the above? My money would be going elsewhere.

No, Sansamps are analogue (although the rack models have a digital interface).
Which means that my 2004 MIA Jazz must be uber-wicked. I went out with every intention of buying a Variax Bass. I got on fine with it in terms of playability and feel, but had the shop let me try a Stingray, Corvette and Jazz just for comparison. Every one of them sounded better than the Variax, even when it was at its best. The Jazz was SO good, I bought it. I did quite like the 8/12 string (Hagstrom/Hamer) modelling on the Variax, though.
...or it could have been a dog of a pre-CBS Fender...

Would you buy/play a pink jazz? With Pic
velvetkevorkian replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
Nothing wrong with a pink bass at all... ... however a Jazz Bass *shudder*
+1! -
Because you can have multiple models/sounds without having to have multiple rigs, e.g. I use the same preamp for bass, double bass and electric and acoustic guitar, and can tailor my sound to each one. If all you want is one sound, and you can achieve that with gear you like, then yes, modelling probably isn't for you. For me, I'd rather spend 2k on an Axe-FX than on a vintage SVT, but as ever, YMMV.
