Someone on TB posted a blind AB test between a Variax on the Fender Jazz setting and an actual pre-CBS Jazz- the consensus was, if I recall rightly, that the Line 6 sounded better to most people.
+1 "They may have to travel a distance without the room for gear.....there's many reasons why they wouldn't have an amp"" There are no reasons AT ALL for a band to turn up without the proper kit, barring accidents on the way. Even then, they should call ahead and say that they cannot play. I wouldn't lend my gear to anyone I didn't know well, and I've only done that twice.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree
Go on then list me "numerous reasons" why a band might not have a ~150w Peavey 115 TNT combo off ebay?? They go for about £100!! They are enough (if you learn how to eq) to get heard on a stage, they will be DI'ed. I know, I've used them many times as an onstage monitor. It isnt a nice sound, it doesnt look pretty,m there are no flashing lights, and it will not ever sound 'great' but it will do the job (just). If thats all you can afford then tough. Its not "incredibly elitist" to expect people to bring the tools they need to do the job they intend to do. Its common sense. It is however incredibly thoughtless (to the point of either mindless ignorance or supreme arrogance) to presuppose that you will be allowed to use someone else rig (be it a similar combo or several grands worth of kit) because you haven't even sorted out the bare minimum essentials required to actually be gigging. Worse yet to tell someone that they will have to lend their gear to someone else that they dont know from adam and accept all the associated risks. I insure my gear, in case its stolen or breaks whilst I am using it. If that were to happen I would still be out of pocket by a significant amount as a result of the way insurance works, not to mention the time taken to get replacement kit. So it doesnt mean I am willing to, or would advocate ayone else, lending their kit. You do so at your own risk, and all those who are lending away like happy bunnies will be happy until the day comes that a couple of grands worth of their kit gets busted by one of a group of people borrowing it on the night, none of whom has the honesty to own up to what they've done. At which point you will change your mind. Or you are a fool. I couldnt really care which, cos I'll still be able to play through my rig beacause I didnt lend it to some git who should have brought his own kit.
Let's be clear: I am not advocating simply turning up and assuming that someone will have gear to use. I'm not suggesting that everyone ought to lend their gear if they don't want to. I just think its important to recognise that sometimes, for reasons of money or logistics, it is not feasible for someone to bring an amp, and to say that therefore they shouldn't be gigging is very unfair. I have gigged with tiny house amps and gone totally DI on occasion, and wouldn't hesitate to again, but if an amp is there, most people are IME happy to let you use it as long as you can demonstrate that you're capable of acting responsibly- just asking and saying thank you goes a long way. As ever, YMMV. Maybe my attitude would be different if I was taking a £2k rig instead of my somewhat unconventional setup.

Here is an article about how to go about making one if you're knowledgeable in CSS. Frankly though, it seems like an awful lot of f***ing about for not a lot of return.
@ Chris_b These are all reasons why these guys should not be gigging in the first place! The promoter should be professional enough to hire in a backline, not expect someone who owns the right equipment to do his job for him! Thats just plain wrong. Everyone has to start somewhere. Promoters/club owners rarely provide backline. A professional rig is just way too expensive for the majority of establishments. As I said, I've never had anyone book us for a gig without telling us who we would be sharing the bill with and what gear they had and if they had asked if a kit/amp was provided. IME most venues try to find out who's using what so the sound tech can organise changeover etc. The bands (including my own who are situated an hour away) that play in our local club have offered to play free gigs for 6 months to raise funds for a house backline but as the extra cost of insurance for the gear would increase the overheads too much the owner declined. I can understand why people are sensitive about their gear but a little understanding goes a long way.
Agree 100%. There are numerous reasons why a band may not have all the gear they might want, or may not be able to bring it, and its incredibly elitist IMO to suggest that they should all stay in their bedrooms until they can get both a gig-worthy amp and a car to put it in. If you don't want to lend your kit, that's fine, and that's your prerogative, but sweeping assumptions like that are frankly insulting.
I prefer your layout!
+1- the one you've linked to is a horrible mess layout wise. It looks like something from 1998, made in Frontpage. Yours is much leaner and cleaner.

I've lent my amp on a number of occasions (to death metal bands mainly!), and used other people's amps on numerous others. As long as its by prior arrangement I don't see the problem. Obviously I keep an eye on it and if they make any special requests (don't touch EQ etc.) you abide by that. That said, if you don't want to lend yours then that's your prerogative.

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!

What's the big box with lots of knobs and no writing? -
Surely less top end (i.e. the opposite of "bright")?

Not totally solo, but this Naxos CD (and volume 2 also) have some lovely playing.

Or it could be a typo- 2 is just next to 3, after all...

Quilted. Flamed is OK, especially on the backs of double basses, while birdseye is pointless and rubbish IMHO.

That's really good. I was expecting not to like it but it's a good idea, very well executed- I particularly liked the bits where you get the melody going. And the hat. Nice one!

VOTE NOW!!! Barefaced Bassface 2009 shortlist
velvetkevorkian replied to alexclaber's topic in Repairs and Technical
Can it be posted in the "Site News" section so it appears at the top of the main page (i.e. where it currently shows "Basschat.co.uk latest news: I won an award... Jazz Journalist Of The Year.")? -
I love the fact that there is a venue called The Hobbit.

Looking to have My new double bass Spruced.
velvetkevorkian replied to fatgoogle's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I'm not really qualified to comment on most of that, but if the Upton pickup is the Revolution Solo II I think its great- I get a very natural sound with mine. Nice looking bass though! -
I read that and thought "Why would anyone need to bleed a door?". I am an idiot

Elixirs only sell 4s as a set now- you have to buy the low B or high C separately (e.g. here).

I'm with you- I switch neck profiles and number of strings frequently and its never bothered me. That said there's plenty of behaviour that goes on round here that I find inexplicable so I'm probably not representative...

Playing bass wearing black silk gloves - for BETTER TONE
velvetkevorkian replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
This thread delivers! Whoever thought a pair of gloves could stir up such strong emotions? I have on occasion played with woolly fingerless gloves (which I wear for most of the winter) and I'm pretty sure I tried with full finger ones as well- didn't work for me. Also, it would be one more thing I'm bound to forget to take to practice (another reason I don't like using picks!). -
Breaking a string at a gig - has this happened to you?
velvetkevorkian replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Never broken a bass guitar string. Once broke a DB string in rehearsal but it was an old tired school bass with strings older than I was. Don't take spares, but I have enough extra strings on my basses I'm sure I'd be able to work something out. -

Dingwall Combustion - anyone got or played one?

Ha- it took me a while to find it, as I thought it had expired but thought it took a lot longer than that! -

The Novax patent (here) only covers one method of laying out the frets, using lines coming from a single point. There are simpler ways of doing it (mark the fretspaces on the longest and shortest strings then join them), while the concept of fanned frets per se has been around since the Renaissance (link). Wow, that was some serious procrastination when I have lots of things needing doing that are actually important
