1. I always thought it was more of a pinky rest for pick players.
2. I don't bother. I just set the strings to my preferred height and try and use my ears. I did start on DB originally so perhaps my attitude is coloured by that.
3.
My amp head has separate inputs for active/passes basses, and I also usually run through a fuzz and a limiter; are we saying I'd get nothing from adding a pre-amp? I'm just not really sure what they're for.
You would have a lot of redundant features- the preamp would do the same sort of thing as the EQ/preamp section on your amp.
4. Floating thumb normally has less anchorage, so when you play the A string your thumb floats over the E string, it doesn't rest on it to the same extent.
5. If I was paying him a million dollars just to join my band I'd bloody well want him to be spot on every time.
6. Sarcasm detector broken again?
7. Ergo instruments.
8. Fear Factory
9. Well I got the full set of strings set up, tuned BEADGBE with a super light Elixirs set for the lower six and a single .024 guitar string for the high E. Seems to work perfectly- only problem was the ball end was a bit too small so I had to cannabalise one from an old set of strings and run the string through it. Bit of a bodge but seems to be holding, and it sounds great
10. If you're in Edinburgh anyway might be worth giving Stringers a shout and see if they have anything in stock. Last I checked they were quite close to the bus station in Edinburgh, although I would probably call first as they don't hold that much DB stock. I think they try and be a bit more "up-market" than the Violin Shop, in a typically Edinburgh fashion :snob:
11. I'd also be interested- thanks for taking the time Leftybassman!
12.
I think your post answers the question. It seems to me that people who play 4's just prefer 4's. They don’t need any more strings, they don't want wider necks and they think that changing up will be a problem that they don't want or need to deal with. People who play 5's prefer the flexibility. Each choice is personal and valid. 5's are perfect for me now. I own a 4 string bass which I brought first and don’t want to sell even though I might never play it again.
Agree 100%.
13. Boogex. Appears to be a VST effect which models the response of a guitar cab.
14. Unless you want to give these guys some business...
15. Yeah, I'm about 6' and found it difficult to get the bass high enough on the backpack straps to avoid having it banging into the back of your legs while also avoiding doorframes, bus stops, signs etc. As always though, your mileage may vary. FWIW I like having the wheels but will need to do something preventative if I start taking my bass out again- she's been sadly neglected of late.
16. I've not used that specific case, but a couple of points in general- if you're using the wheels, make sure they're not putting pressure/friction on the bass itself- my bass has noticeable chips in the finish from where the rivets that hold the wheels on rub. Also, IME backpack straps are almost useless on a DB case, unless you're about twice my height or play a tiny bass. I've had better luck with a strap that loops around the endpin at one end and the neck at the other- much easier than trying to use the backpack straps. Hope that helps to some extent edit- I think this is the case I have- that supplier is trade only but I ended up paying about the same as the one you're looking at. The Violin Shop in Glasgow ordered it specially for me as I needed one bigger than the ones they normally stock.
17. Are those ear protectors that PG is wearing?
18. As above- might also be worth asking Strung Out Guitars- I don't know if they do resprays but they have done other good work for me in the past.
19. I quite like that. Not £500 like though...
20. "I wud rather pass my tracks to a real bass player & ill buy sumit else with the money." Sorry, what? As an aside, I had an Epiphone Strat copy in a similar style. My sister has it now, seemed like a decent enough guitar.
21. That's a good point, a wider selection of stuff with more than 4 strings would be nice. edit- thinking out loud now, can you become a dealer for custom shops so people can order through you?
22. That's a great price- I paid over twice that for mine!
23. No reply from Elixir but I found that Strings Direct sell single strings so I took the plunge and ordered a .024 guitar string- length-wise it seems long enough. Now I just need to order the other 6 strings and put the bridge back on the bass
24.
Hi all I am opening a bass shop in Glasgow, yup, no guitars no drums no keys, just bass stuff, everything from beginer to pro level and i would appreciate a bit of help with a few questions to help with the marketing, you can reply here or to [email protected] i guarantee you will not be contacted via your reply unless you specifically ask to be, i would be grateful for your input and suggestions 1) Do you welcome a bass specific shop in Scotland 2) What would you like to see in stock 3) Are you more likely to visit the shop or use our online service 4) Roughly how much do you spend on bass goods in a year 5) Is this likely to increase if you had a bass shop you could visit? The shop will be for bass players and by bassplayers so please take a minute and help us to provide the best possible service and to stock the things you want to see. cheers jamie
1) Definitely 2) Cool stuff in the mid-level price bracket would be nice. Also a slightly more esoteric selection of accessories would be good too (IE I can't get a 5 string set of Elixir strings in a gauge I like without it being a special order at the moment). Knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Books! 3) If its local I would try and come in. 4) Probably around a grand last year. 5) I've not bought many instruments new, but a reasonable selection of not-hideously-expensive stuff could certainly tempt me to impulse buy. Best of luck with this and I hope it works out.
25. Very cool- bass is nice and grindy.
